A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Holy Sheeeeeet!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 16, 2025

Wow. Just WOW. Buster Posey I am looking at you and positively BEAMING!

This is going to go down as one of the most significant moves in SF Giant history. Devers is a true star. One of the best hitters in the game. Honestly, he’s probably just a DH but that’s fine, we can find other gloves to man the field. Look, a guy like Devers was NEVER gonna sign here as a FA. So Buster’s beautiful ass just went out and plucked him right off the apple tree. Fuck the cost to get him. Harrison looks to be pretty stalled out and I got news for him, he ain’t gonna like pitching at Fenway. If he couldn’t pitch at Oracle he ain’t gonna pitch in Boston. He looks like another missed draft pick. Tibbs, eh, whatever, he’s in A ball. And the 250 million owed? Fuck that too. That’s nothing. Go look at Ohtani’s contract if you’re worried about stacks of cash.

Devers is 28. LOL He’s 28! Go look at how old Bonds was when we got him. And I’m not saying Devers is going to be Barry but if you want a premier hitter about to storm into the prime of his career who was NEVER going to sign with the Giants as a FA then I got news for you, Buster just pulled off a miracle. And he’s ours. HE’S ALL OURS!!!! Wooooooohoooooooo!!!!!!

I’ve got the longest knowing dude head nod pointed at Posey and I bow MOST deeply and grandly in his general direction…..

Devers won’t make a difference if your 3rd base coach keeps coaching like a 100% WHIMP by not sending base runners home on hits to the outfield with 2 outs on 50/50 plays as he did yesterday when the Giants were ahead 3-2 vs the Dodgers. That runner would have easily scored because the Dodger’s defense fumbled the baseball and the score should have been 4-2. Or how about your stupid catcher calling two straight slider pitches after Pages hit a TAPE MEASURE foul ball on the 1st slider. Pages was sitting DEAD RED on a slider and your catcher decides to call another slider pitch which Pages promptly hit for a 3 run homerun. Devers will NOT solve the mental errors that your coaches and players make.

Yeah, holy sheeeet… Been looking forward to Buster’s first big trade, and it certainly shook things up, the kind of thing you see in late July, not mid-June. Summary of Boston fan reactions: Either 1) Thank gawd, a lot of money off the payroll and a clubhouse cancer gone, or 2) WTF, Betts, Boegarts, and now Devers??, worst FO ever!, and, We sweep the Yankees and are back in it, and NOW we trade our best hitter??….

If, and it might be a big ‘if’, Devers can be happy playing wherever the Giants slot him, then this will be a great trade. Wonder if maybe there’s a follow up move to this to clarify some things (these things sometimes come in three’s). A little surprised Greggie loosened the purse strings. …. Betts, Boegarts, and Devers… anyone remember Beck Bogert Appice? Saw them in ’73 at the legendary Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ…. So glad I got to see Jeff Beck at least that once.

As Loo said end of thread, unprecedented move by Posey. SF was usually team trading away best players, often for lousy return. Even in Madlock case, guy exploded once dealt away to Pirates and wound up starring for Pops Stargell WS winning 1979 team.

slusser column in chron quoted Posey as saying Devers-Harrison talks had been going on for weeks. Also that he GM and Melvin will talk to Devers when he arrives about where he fits.

Also in story is glowing report about Devers from former teammate Dom Smith and regrets from Sox Breslow about what was reported about feud btw Devers and team. so take away from all that what you will.

Interesting that maybe Harrison was the primary piece of interest and including Tibbs pushed it over the line.

Yeah, agreed. ? For Sox though they have taken on Hicks salary, what will they do with $$ saved ridding themselves of Devers obligation.

Yesterday, I watched the Giants lose a very winnable baseball game to the Dodgers (5-4) due to stupid mental mistakes made by their 3rd base coach and catcher. With the Giants ahead 3-2, 2 outs, and a runner at 1st base, the 3rd base coach made the STUPID and PASSIVE decision to hold the base runner at 3rd base on a 50/50 play on a base hit deep to left center field. The Dodger’s defense fumbled the baseball two times on that play and the base runner would have easily scored to make the score 4-2 but for the WHIMPY decision of the 3rd base coach.

Then there was the stupid decision by the Ginat’s catcher to call two straight slider pitches after Andy Pages of the Dodgers hit a TAPE MEASURE foul ball on the 1st slider. Pages was sitting DEAD RED on a slider and the Giant’s catcher decides to call another slider pitch which Pages promptly hit for a 3-run homerun to make the score 5-3 in favor of the Dodgers.

You can’t make those types of STUPID mental mistakes and expect to win a World Series Title. Those are the kind of STUPID mental mistakes that make a difference between a team finishing in 1st place (with home field advantage), being a wild card team, or not making the playoffs at all. If you are going to lose a baseball game, lose it by being aggressive and making the defense make the play to stop you – do NOT stop yourself!!!

Devers will NOT solve the mental errors that your coaches and players make.

Buster Ball — last year, he didn’t wait until Chapman was a free agent, he signed him long term during the season. Then he was first out of the gate in the off season, signing Adames. Now he makes a July 31st kind of block’buster’ in mid-June. I like it.

  7. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 16, 2025 at 8:20 am

Just a pure pure salary dump situation for Boston getting 253M over 8 plus years off their books.Wonder with all that freed up money they put in back in players are not?

It’s laughable how the Giants TAR&FEATHERED the Red Sox’s and their Owner John Henry&GM Breslow .And of all the players they received only Hicks( chuckle) is added to the team as Harrison goes to AAA another slam to him in his yo-yo career.

And really what a savings ( yeah crazy salaries and all) over Othani,Guerrero,Judge Trout etc massive contracts are that Devers looks low end in comparison..And I have no problem that Devers will fit right in with Giants, it’s a fun clubhouse, the Spanish speaking players especially Flores&Adames, hell, even their pitching coach JD Martinez( who’s done a fantastic job btw will make him feel comfortable as he tears the cover off the ball for years to come..

and as San Dawg texted me this morning, Buster has a good relationship with the Latin guys, I’m guessing he gets him to play first base by next year. Till then he can just DH and fucking RAKE

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 16, 2025 at 9:55 am

Yeah, I had these guys trading Dirty Harry. Had no clue it would be for someone like Devers though. Kinda wish they woulda done it AFTER he pitched one last time. Hjelle No looked like a deer in a tunnel. Hicks is just a body with a biggish contract.

I guess Posey took Greggie to the batting cages under the stadium and whacked some line drives at his head. Said ‘gimme some rope here!’

Like the great Gretsky said, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Buster is taking shots. Groovy. But who the fuck is Lucchesi?

  12. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 16, 2025 at 10:09 am

Devers brings .905 OPS to lineup. Giants current leader is Ramos at .824. Dogs have 4 guys over .900 from Ohtani to Betts Freeman and Will Smith. They host Padres for 4 at Latrine after taking 2 of 3 from them at Petco.

Ohtani slated to start on mound tonight.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 16, 2025 at 2:21 pm

Ohtani is gonna screw up that shoulder again.

They are pretty crazy letting him pitch. But hey all the $$$ is deferred anyway.

  13. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 16, 2025 at 10:13 am

    What you said, BF.

I liked this trade immediately when I heard it yesterday. I like it even more as I learn more about it. There is nothing that Giants fans should dislike about it. KNBR just talked to the Boston sportstalk radio counterpart, and he’s pissed, and says the [idiot] Rsox fan base is overwhelmingly pissed, too. Thinks it’s a salary dump, and that if Boston FO were getting rid of a clubhouse problem, they didn’t get enough talent back for a stud hitter in his prime. All a good sign for SF. Maybe this is SF’s Mookie Betts revenge against LA. Not worried about the “diva” thing. Change of scenery works wonders. SF clubhouse should absorb him like an amoeba. The massive “diva” ghost of Bonds in the clubhouse spits on any Beantown “diva” aura coming in from this guy.

    What SF got:

    1. Devers is one of the most consistent top bats in MLB over the last half decade+.
    2. He’s in his prime, only 28.
    3. He’s a power guy, but hits for average, with a .280 lifetime; career OPS of .860 and OPS+ of 129.
    4. He’s a rare lefty power guy that takes the ball oppo to left a lot. He’s apparently hit a lot of doubles off the Green Monster that would be bombs at Oracle. That tells me he won’t get super frustrated with rocket after rocket hit into deep right center at Oracle.
    5. A hitter that should make the anemic Giants offensive players better by just being in the lineup around him. He’s the first batter in this LU for years that the opposition will actually fear.

    What SF gave:

    Not a lot, IMO.

    1. Hicks was a Farhan guy. Buster had no personal investment in him. Got rid of a pretty big contract at $11MM AAV per year the next 2.5 years, for a guy in pitching limbo and likely pissed that the starter dream hit the sand barrels. That cushions the salary hit of Devers.
    2. Never got the hype with Harrison. He hasn’t shown much as a major leaguer. I never liked his motion, he constantly is up in the zone with a funky, truncated follow through. Maybe Bailey, the RSox pitching coach and ex-SF PCoach last season, can fix him, but he didn’t fix him last season, so good luck with that.
    3. 2 low minor leaguers — whatever, that’s a roll of the dice in the deal. How many SF first rounders never make it? A lot.
    4. Giants keep Whisenhunt — I consider that a very good part of the trade.
  14. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on June 16, 2025 at 11:07 am

I’d completely forgotten what a horseshit contract they gave Hicks for no good reason. No idea WTF they were thinking…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 16, 2025 at 12:08 pm

Speaking of contracts Loo, this Devers contract unequivocally puts a strangle hold and boot stomp on the decade long “break even” attitude in our Giants executive suite. Posey convinced Junior to make Devers contract the richest one EVER given to a player in Giants history . . . almost $70 million simoleons more than Adames contract. Probably the biggest trade in Giants history since Pence for Schierholtz, Joseph, and Rosin in 2012, insofar as impact. The Vida Blue trade in ’78 for about a 1/2 dozen players (Heaverlo, Alexander and ???) also stands out.

Frankly, color me shocked as I didn’t think ownership would allow Buster to do something like this. Buster is not only an all time great catcher, but obviously a brilliant, silver tongued, baseball executive.

And of course the Chicago 7 deal of 1987. Just like Kent, Mitchell didn’t become an MVP masher till he came to the Giants…

Yep. Mitchell deal was big too. As was Scutaro – which I almost forgot, but Flav posted a comment from Scutaro regarding this Dever trade and it jogged my memory.

Hicks’ three truncated flops as a starter do obscure why he might have commanded a fairly big contract elsewhere in 24 as a bullpen arm..

Guards score about half run per game less than Giants with team OPS 10 points lighter 35-35 right in WC mix but 9.5 back of Tigers

  16. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 16, 2025 at 12:07 pm

shit the A’s stupidly traded Cespedes for Lester and that was a dumb move and Lester was a star. Harrison is just nothing but conjecture at this point, at best. Who cares if he throws 95 he’s got no idea how to locate it.

    • James's avatar James said, on June 16, 2025 at 12:17 pm

It was frustrating to hear him compared to Sale because of the similar type of fastball. Sale throws 97-98 and has a good breaking ball. Maybe Harrison still develops the additional pitch and control, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Apparently, neither would Posey.

13 guys with bigger deals than Devers. The money is nothing for a bat like that

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 16, 2025 at 12:32 pm

Barring injury, like Purdy’s deal, this Devers deal will look better and better over the top years of this guy’s career — the next 5-6 years. I’ve heard nothing of any opt outs, so there must be none. Good. Super glad they finalized the deal before Harrison took the mound. Not just preventing injury, but he may very well have gotten shelled early by LA, maybe mucking up the deal, or at least making Boston FO think twice because that would push even more fan blowback about what they got in return…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 16, 2025 at 12:40 pm

Nice comment by Scutaro. Hope he’s right.

Giants don’t win that 2012 WS without Scutaro. So massively clutch in that stretch drive. I remember very well saying they should pick him up before they did. One of his kids was in the same East Bay GScouts troop as one of the snarkettes. His wife was a stone fox…

  18. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on June 16, 2025 at 12:49 pm

Kind of amazing that the Giants never ran into the NY teams in the PS even once during the 3 in 5. For the 2016 WC game I paid around $400 for a great seat about 20 rows from the field behind the Giant dugout. Nine years later $400 would probably get me upper deck outfield for the same game. Didn’t expect to be thinking about that now…
