A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

This Was Not A Dream. This Was Real.

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 17, 2025

Still riding the highest of high’s from that heist Buster pulled off on the clueless Red Sox. Look at this explanation from Craig Breslow. Does this make sense to anyone?

“It’s not that this was the best deal that we could get, because the best deal that we could get may not necessarily be good enough to trade a player like Raffy Devers. This is the one that made sense, this is the path that we went down, and we ended up where we did.”

Uh, yeah, ok. Good luck with all of that.

Headed to the game on Friday night. Gotta be there to watch Devers face off with his likely stunned mates. Will be sitting in the LF bleachers and as I texted Loo, Mac and Diggity yesterday I plan on watching Raffy blast one oppo right to me and having it land in my sweet fucking hands. And in case you’ve been wondering, no gents, these hands have NOT been soaking in Ivory liquid. LFG!

Didn’t get chance to weigh in yesterday but agree with universal sentiment expressed by everyone. Buster gave Giant nation a Father’s Day gift.

As my son said to me couple hours after trade (or heist) was announced Sunday night, there’s nothing wrong with swinging for fences. In Devers case, that could be meant literally and metaphorically.

Absorbing roughly $250 million contract with 8.5 years left worth risk for top 10 bat in all of baseball who hits for power and average. This acquisition plugs huge void in lineup and provides more righty/lefty balance. Devers becomes fixture at DH and can man 3B when Chappy’s out. 1B??? Who knows after his refusal to play there for Sox.

The one risk I see is possibility that Devers gets disgruntled by year 2 or 3 and becomes clubhouse problem. He’s only on Giants roster because his continued presence in Sox clubhouse became untenable. Therefore, Giants must manage him adroitly and ensure he remains positive and vocal leader alongside Chapman, Adames and Webb.

But potential rewards well outweigh risk. Buster…well done.

I’m hearing some people comparing the lopsided-ness of the trade to the Doncic deal…

T J McConnell is amazing guy. Undrafted out of college at 6-1, now 33 and playing big role for Indy with Halliburton not at full strength. Good finals series so far.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 17, 2025 at 9:08 am

I like it a lot. What I love is that Buster applauded the Beltran trade right before pulling off his own big move. I think Devers will rake. So did Beltran. The burden is still on the rest of the team to make it work.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 17, 2025 at 9:10 am

And of course the Devers trade is not just about this year.

One Giant coach Rafael Devers should avoid at all cost even put ear plugs in when he approaches is Pat Burrell, I don’t want him fucking up his great swing by making some tweak adjustment advice..

Burrell is a terrible hitting coach ,Giants win cause of the other coach JD Martinez not anything Burrell offers except underachieving hitters..

  8. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 17, 2025 at 10:01 am

So I’m going to fact check this with just my memory but as I recall Beltran started hitting for us once we were basically eliminated. Probably would have to check the game logs that year to confirm. He also got hurt too right? Wrist?

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on June 17, 2025 at 10:17 am

my recollection is similar BF, him being injured is what I remember most, and I do NOT recall is bat being much of a factor

    • James's avatar James said, on June 17, 2025 at 10:29 am

I checked the game logs back in 2011 when Twinfan started dismissing Beltran as a failure. They were not out of it at the end of August. They 4 or 5 games behind , if I remember correctly. Yes, he was injured part of the time.

    • James's avatar James said, on June 17, 2025 at 10:40 am

Beltran and Pablo carried the team in September, which SF finished a few games over 500. The rest of the line up was even worse than they had been the previous 5 months. Arizona also went on an absolute tear in September.

Ohtani pitched 1 inning last night and LA supposed to use opener/pen game again tonight. Found out LA gets another break from baseball in that he doesn’t count as pitcher on roster.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 17, 2025 at 10:32 am

I watched that first inning. Oh barely made it through. He was wild. The pen was active. He got lucky. Hit 98 easily though.

I had busy weekend and didn’t hear of the trade til quite late Sunday eve. As BF stated: “wow! Just WOW!” A real stunner! I’m still in ‘pinch me’ mode. I’m on pins and needles waiting to see if Devers is in tonight’s line up.

  11. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 17, 2025 at 11:08 am

Well as of right now Devers is playing 3B and hitting 3rd!! Let’s Roll

Buster means Business! Buster:Hey Raffy just don’t worry about that shit from a dysfunctional former team in Boston, your a SF Giant now and I’m here to help you continue your greatness. No problem, u need some 3B with Chappy out I can do that along with DH..

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 17, 2025 at 11:45 am

Schmitt was just coming back from banging the same foot, now twice.Tried to toughen it out but left in the 3rd.X-rays came back negative atleast, but maybe he stills end up on 10 day ? Devers sort of a hack at 3rd I’ve heard but his bat isn’t.Till Chappy gets back Devers could see a lot of action at 3rd and DH of course..

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on June 17, 2025 at 1:34 pm

well, as usual, finger on the pulse there, Kat. Do you have red-phone connection to the dugout? Ha! I looked at the Giants site, they only have the ‘matchups’ so far, and Devers is not included in the 13 listed. He is on the 40 as DH, but I cannot find today’s lineup as being posted yet.

    3B? Hope he’s not rusty.

Speculation about Dom’s fate may not be front-page news now but I’m interested. In interviews, he sounds more like a smart, articulate musician than a jock. And his fine D is uniquely graceful, too — the otter-like belly slide to tag the bag, the alley-oop toss to a pitcher covering. Effective and fun to watch. I hope he can continue to hit a bit.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 17, 2025 at 11:32 am

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 17, 2025 at 11:35 am

yeah, that was my view, too. But if Schmitt’s down, the alts are Koss and Fitz. Maybe Rafael took IF practice after his meeting with Buster yesterday.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 17, 2025 at 11:38 am

Putting him at 3rd does allow them to “respect” Wilmer for the first game of the new era, for what that’s worth.

Isn’t there roster move coming with someone leaving as Devers is added?

  14. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 17, 2025 at 11:38 am

Beltran started 3 for his first 24. He hit his first bomb on Aug 24th nearly a month after we got him. In Aug he hit .300. Sept he hit .378. So it was pretty much as I remembered but AZ ran away with the division in Sept so what he did then, or anyone on the team for that matter, probably wasn’t going to matter much.

  15. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 17, 2025 at 11:39 am

Beltran .920 OPS with us so whenever the production happened he was considered a success with us. It just wasn’t enough

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 17, 2025 at 12:02 pm

iirc, Charles Johnson publically called the release of Rowand and the trade for Beltran CEO-style wheeler dealing from a guy who wasn’t a CEO and he used those transactions, maybe as cover, to explain why the owners fired Neukom in mid-Sept. Neuk’s wiki page offers a different take. I well remember Neukom zipping up to Washington to be in the courtroom for Timmy’s driving while ripped hearing. Maybe he tried to do too much.

The big trade has things buzzing. Hey, the Giants are relevant this season; we’ll take it!

I’m not a fan of narratives that say Zaidi didn’t try as hard as Buster. There’s a lot of Zaidi’s guys on the roster. And who knows what budget restrictions Zaidi was given by the owners. We’ll probably never know. Maybe Buster just has more pull with the owners, given who he is to the Giants legacy.

The Valkyries!! Any WNBA team that takes this expansion team lightly is going to get smoked. A’ja Wilson’s Las Vegas team walked into a buzzsaw. The Vals are already legit, even as an expansion team. There’s no pressure on them, so they just play very hard and go for it. Every win they can get is a feather in their cap.

Clark is back, and the Fever defeated the team with the best record, the NY Liberty. At one point in the game, Clark scored 9 points in 38 seconds. Longtime observers of the league said: “Well, that ain’t ever happened in this league before.”

The NBA finals: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. If you like three-pointers and free throw shooting, well, this is your thing.

Yeah, I can’t believe Lee didn’t try to tag. So frustrating.

So Schmitt goes brain dead on the bags and at home plate, swinging at the usual unhittable outside crap he can’t stop swinging at. Why any pitcher will give him or Adames anything but a diet of low outside crap is beyond me…

Devers is probably thinking holy shit my former team never ran the bases this bad…
