Easily Winnable Game
All you need to know about that one was 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position. Devers with a 111mph rocket to the wall gave us a nice little taste of whats to come. Hopefully, more terrible base running isn’t to come. I’m not even going to look it up, I’ll just assume that was the hardest hit ball by a Giant this season. We do not hit the ball very hard, hopefully Raffy changes that.
Does anyone have Tim Flannery’s #?
Couple of interesting factoids about Flannery. If Wikipedia correct, Flannery’s first MLB game ironically vs Giants at old Jack Murphy Stadium. He went 1-3 and Padres won. Only post-season appearance in 1984. 3 at bats in NLCS and Flannery reached base all three times. Only 1 at bat in World Series and he hit single off Jack Morris. 4 AB’s in post-season and he reached base every time.
But my favorite memory of Flannery will be running two-thirds of way down 3rd base line while almost always successfully guiding Giants runner home thru 3 WS titles.
Didn’t see a lot of game, but that wasn’t Ray’s best outing either. Giants gave him couple leads which he soon coughed up. 102 pitches over dreaded “quality start.”
I don’t know which is worse in MLB. The umpiring or the base running…
yeah Ray was not sharp last night and Schmitt’s rally-killing gaffe at 2B was enraging. But Schmitt’s lower left leg is battered. That boot he wears in the batter’s box looks like something a seriously unlucky skier would wear home from the slopes. The injuries to Chapman and Bailey weaken the team, too. Assuming a return to good health for the LU and a tolerable five IP per game from Verlander soon, the wins should start racking up again. Devers really is a monster at the plate.
minor subplot: Soon to be 30 year-old rookie Logan Porter clearly won the battle of the lowly backup catchers last night. His tag after the great throw from Ramos was excellent. Knizner? Meh. And that Cleveland journeyman Hedges did not even attempt to frame a pitch all night. Porter was undrafted out of college but signed by the royals to be a bullpen catcher. Strange tale.
Sad to hear passing of local radio announcer Leslie Stoval. She was with KRE, great station before moving to KBLX “soft and warm/quiet storm” and KCSM. RIP.
wow. Seems like I was listening to her on kcsm just the other day. Or night. The Jazz Oasis, for example.
yeah, or Thursday jazz in afternoon slot. turned on music there this morning and there was news.
Ramos has the 2 hardest hit balls according to Sara Langs MLB a 116mph HR and 113mph single.Makes since at his younger age 25 and stout frame at 230 lbs but Devers will put up some crazy ass speed shots as well.. and is 6’O 235lbs .Man that dude like Bonds you just don’t want to miss their AB’s..
Now on the Giants :BRRR ( Base Running Retardation Ranking) I have to assume dead last in baseball 🫣
I rank the lack of hitting with RISP more disappointing than the running gaffs. Bases loaded with 1 out, embarrassing
I must agree. It is what I’ve witnessed the last couple years and has been endlessly discussed here on the Flap: RISP, Situational hitting, whatever you want to call it. It’s the elephant in the room, IMHO.
Yes, although last night had both “disappointments.”
As said yesterday thread, interesting to sort out how Smith/Flores/1b situation works.
Yeah they stunk 1-13 RISP Kevin but Damm You have to send Lee on that fly all to LF that’s on Williams and Lee he’s the tying run!! Rather see what happens at the plate with Lee’s speed then leave it up to a hobbled Schmitt..
Yup. Yup. Yup. The LFer was running to his right and it wasn’t an easy throw at all.
Bring back Flan man.
Melvin just blew off that play postgame from reporters asking saying it wasn’t as deep as the play Ramos had to made yada yada! Cmon Kwan has a rag arm he was moving to his left and the throw was off line that the Catcher even bobbled to right side of the plate!Just admit it you screwed up BO MEL..
I couldn’t believe on replay that Lee didn’t go with his speed..
Kwan’s arm is actually ok. He doubled off Schmitt with a 90 mph strike. The throw home was up the line, but it was still a strong one hopper to the plate. The catcher bobbled it when he came up to field it after he saw Lee wasn’t running. Lee could have slid around the tag and probably would have scored.
In defense of Ray, the pitch that was hit out to right center (!) by a guy who hadn’t homered in 2 months was 96 up outside of the strike zone. When the same nobody nearly hit another off Rodriquez, I knew it wasn’t Ray. Fry’s double was on a change up below the zone. There wasn’t a lot of loud contact beyond that.
If Smith can provide anything, I’d trade Flores for some kind of RFer.
Flores likely doesn’t keep this pace up all year, and Devers can slide over there.
The deal is really about giving outs away when they should damn well NOT be given away.
Getting caught stealing is one thing, but seeing a play right in front of you and you still wander off the bag too far is just fucking brain-dead stupid.
I see so many guys on our team go half way between 2nd and 3rd on routine fly balls to RF. Devers might have done it yesterday. They should be tagging up!
It blows my mind. This is fucking little league stuff. And they routinely screw shit up.
At least Devers didn’t come up through our farm system.
After last night’s 1-13, the Giants are hitting 247, OPS of 762 with RISP. Their overall batting avg. is 233, OPS of 689.
My heart sank last night when I saw Lee tag up and then hold up on that fly ball. The throw was good and would have beaten Lee, but still a better chance to tie than leaving it up to a 200 hitter against Clase.
The Giants’ baserunning last night seemed kind of Friday night softball-ish. At least the softball players have the excuse of being out of shape and thinking about the pizza and beer after the game. A case could be made for Williams sending Lee at the end, but Kruk and Kuip aren’t going to make the case. Anyone waiting for them to say something critical about Williams is going to be like Mimi Rogers at the end of The Rapture, standing on their own isolated planet, staring up into outer space.
The Connecticut Sun went with the Fever opponent strategy of beating up on Clark all game and seeing if they could injure the FACE OF THE ENTIRE LEAGUE WHO TRIPLED THE VIEWERSHIP AND REVENUE OF THE LEAGUE, and how stupid is that? Marina Mabrey, who has done nothing ever to grow the league in her 6 or 7 years in the league, shoved Clark to the ground on a blindside shove, after Clark had been poked in the eye and shoved by a different Sun player. Clark looked like a pinball. The refs, inexplicably, didn’t throw Mabrey out of the game, and things were going to explode later. In the 4th quarter, three players were thrown out after a hard foul and a tussle. The broadcasters lamented how the refs had lost control of the game. All that said, the Fever won, and Clark seemed to laugh it all off after the game. She’s physically tougher this season, and she knows how teams are going to approach her.
I won’t pretend to have much interest in the WNBA, but this seems very like the situation with Steph, where he is arguably the best known face of the NBA across the world, yet routinely is manhandled on the court and gets maybe half the foul calls he should get. The reasoning behind that is beyond me, assuming there IS reason for it. With Clark, I could get sexist and call it jealousy, but I don’t really know. The possible racism angle on it that’s been put out there is also beyond my information level. The only thing I sort of like about women’s basketball is the fundamentals they regularly exhibit. Comparing men with women players, there seems to be an inverse relationship between physical prowess and the use of the game’s fundamentals, maybe excepting the first 2 Dubs championship teams under Kerr…
Yeah, those Warriors championship teams were the last NBA champions to play real basketball as I would call it. Now the NBA is all three-pointers and driving in trying to draw fouls.
The WNBA plays traditional basketball, with post players. Yeah, there’s a good amount of three-pointers being shot, but there’s a lot of cuts to the basket and post-up play. A more interesting and balanced type of basketball, to me.
The WNBA grew on me. It has its own storylines and narratives. The hot-shot rookie Bueckers played well against the Vals last night. And the Vals are their own interesting storyline this season.
I like Clark’s response at the end. She’s all “What the bleep was that all about?”
Your video is exhibit #1 of why these imbeciles are doing the opposite “to grow their league.”
Jealousy is a terrible disease. I hope these half-wits get well soon!
Yeah, the jealousy factor is the most surprising thing about Clark’s entrance into the WNBA. I don’t remember ever seeing players cheap-shotting Magic Johnson as he was growing the NBA in the ’80s.
Jersey girl Mabrey should have been tossed. Cunningham though, grabbing gal around head going in for meaningless layup when team was up 17 late in game, was a bad look. Clark’s constant hands in air complaining I hope doesn’t send message to her young ball playing fans that is OK. Move on and play, concentrate on game itself pls.
I think Cunningham is trying to be some kind of enforcer, which is kind of laughable. She’s not very big.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not seeing Clark complaining as much to the refs this season. She still does it, and it annoys me (like when any player does it a lot), but I think she has toned it down a little this season. Little steps in the right direction.
Yep, Mabrey from my local area here in Jersey. Big hoops family, has a couple older sisters and a brother who were very good. Certainly was surprising to see her slam Clark, not cool at all.
The Valkyries host the Fever tomorrow. What an awesome day of sports in SF tomorrow! A Giants game in the afternoon, then the Fever vs. the Vals in Chase Arena tomorrow night. Cool!
NBA finals? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
After Mabrey shoves Clark to the ground on the blindside cheapshot, Mabrey struts away like “my work here is done.” What a punk.
I guess the Fever’s Howard could have gone after Mabrey right at that moment, she was right there, but chose not to. People can debate that choice. In the NBA, the men would have gone at it.
Talk to the Answer about getting punked by the league. Or Steph. Watching LeBron and Harden get brush fouls constantly while Steph get ragdolled all over the court is annoying as fuck.
What continues to baffle me is Clark’s teammates do nothing to have her back.
They just stand around looking worried.
Angel Reese and Caitlyn Clark remind me of Tom and Jerry…
From what I’ve seen, it’s just not in their personality, other than Mitchell, perhaps. A team probably has to go out and get a player like that. Like in hockey. They’ll have to decide how they are going to deal with a punk like Mabrey.
If Schmitt is really hurt, and basically can’t move as needed to play to the level of an MLB player, then why is he not on the IL ? Was he ranging way too far off 2nd base because he’s hobbled and wanted a head start to home? That’s being generous to explain the doubled off. But, if true, he should be sent to the IL and get treatment. Put Koss over at third. He can try to swing at sliders a foot outside in the dirt just as well as Schmitt…
That was my thought also, if you knew he was a liability on the base paths why play him? And why didn’t Melvin pitch run for him in such a close game?
Not gonna thrill anyone, but if necessary Mr. Ed is very experienced all over the infield…
When was the last time Wilbur played 2nd?
Fitzgerald, except for his bunts, is doing nothing. He has 2 RBIs in his last 31 games. 9 for the year.
Fucking Yaz is another one. 2 RBIs in MAY. He hasn’t homered since April.
We have so many dead spots in the lineup still.
Without the best Pen in MLB, this team would be fighting to stay at .500…
Yup
What’s with no rehab start for Verlander? River Cats are on a way long roadie, but he could have thrown 3 innings to 20 year olds with the SJose Giants to tune up. They’ve been in Stockton and Modesto the past week. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if he’s got his mojo going early tonight, if at all…
My bad I doubted Buster’s ability to do this job. Equally important, to convince ownership of what needed to be done. Sure, we have a flawed team, that has a lot of holes in the LU; and, poor baserunning/fielding fundamentals, possibly due to poor minor league instruction and/or poor coaching in San Francisco.
However, we have a pitching staff that is almost 2nd to no one and Buster orchestrating moves. Good combination. I haven’t been this optimistic since the Sabean years.
So just a thought if Lee does tag and score which he would of made it imo to tie the game and Schmitt makes the last out, he’s the ghost runnner on a hobbled foot to start the bottom of the 10th, unless they had another player to run for him. I don’t remember if Koss was still available cause he would have to continue on to play 3rd if the game goes to the 11th? Flores they already used earlier on Schmitt’s screwup and Johnson already out as well PH? Could of been crazy getting positions filled out.
Come on, man. Not sure how all that plays in to not getting the tie. Too many woulda coulda shouldas in there.
Schmitt coulda homered if Lee scores. Or 100 other things. Point being you take the shot when you get it.
Arias put good swing on HR on replay. Like to see Ray go inside and jam him with heat.
watching replay Giants put good swings vs. Clase. Agreed Lee should have gone. Schmitt base running screw up earlier inexcusable. He took 5 steps before he realized line drive held up and Kean was going to catch it.
You can bet when Verlander craps out that Whisenhut will take his spot very soon and I’m excited to get these young guys rolling.Still have Webb&Ray at the top but not to shabby having Birds, Roupp,$Whinsehut (sp) that’s the staff for me going forward..
Roupp is probably on innings limit. He threw about 100 last season, similar to Birds 2023. Birds threw 120 total btw Sac and SF in 2024. Roupp is already at 70 with 68 games to play.
Whis has been hit harder lately per MCC. 5 starts 28 innings 32 hits 11 BBs 19 earned runs. Last night 5.2 innings 9 hits 4 runs.
it was 12-10 game in 80 degree weather at night in Salt Lake @4000 ft elevation.
Eldridge and Luciano both homered.
Dodgers ownership group just bought the Lakers from the buss family. $10B. Crazy money. Kinda bad news for the Warriors if the Lakers have more $$ to spend…
I hope Verlander has a short leash, let’s not wait to see if he has it for tonight
There’s the tiniest bit of separation in the WC standings now, at least in terms of winning percentage plus sample size. Maybe it’s just that the Cards are finally playing more like expected, and the teams closest to SF and SD now seem less likely to be around come September than underperforming Atlanta and Arizona.
Just sucks the life out of you watching the first 2 guys reach and the killer DP to follow and don’t score again..
See Snarkk’s 12:36…
Hey Krukow I’m chomping at the bits to get a Erlanger out of there. He’s toast as a big league pitcher these days! Indians are lighting him up😡
What snarkk said 12:36 about Verlander.
Yep.
He has trouble putting guys away. Not surprising at his age and recent injury history.
Doesn’t help that the defense for some reason often seems complicit in his undoing, like tonight. 2 errors lead to runs.
I’ll be surprised if he finishes the season on the roster. Oh well, what’s $15 million among HOFers?…
zzzzzzzzzzz
Ramos wakes em up.
See Kat’s post Verlander is toast and gassed out 7 hard hit shots HR’s doubles etc 1 walk 6K’sthrow in that Fitz error was hit hard but an error.Yeah they gave him his 70 pitches and Melvin of course will say he battled hard yada yada and at 15M it will just continue on with no solid results..,
A faint pulse
Got a couple back anyway.
Well that’s what they needed a Blast by Ramos! 4-2 that was no cheapie!
Nice work by Bivens.
we ain’t the only team with good pitching.
Time to light up a Guardian with a pitch!
Ramos last night,Flores tonight,Devers a couple of chin musics pitches..
Yeah down 2 but they can’t keep taking that crap without retaliation..
Nice inng of work by Luchessi , I’m glad they have 2 lefties in the pen with experience..
Our continued lack of hitting with RISP is awful. Not hopeful about a comeback:(
Pop up kings it seems.
pen guys did their job, keeping Guards off board.
Giants are 1-10 vs. the AL Central.
I have zero faith in Bailey.
Yeah, they were slip slidin’ away a few weeks ago, then righted the ship, but here we go again. Can’t hope that Devers puts them over the top if no one is hitting, fer krissakes…
True dat, though Devers took oh-fer himself last night, as did few others. Yaz and Bailey at bottom of order with 2 hits each of 6 total. Lee is down to .261 BA, and lower OPS than Yaz.
Lee’s getting the hard in/soft away look, with lot of weak contact to right side. Did have single off Clase night before but not last night. Gotta adjust back.
Saw Padres added CF Bryce Johnson while Merrill remains out. Giants had this guy 2022-23 and he went 9-61 in 2 brief stints. Padres have dropped first 3 of 4 at Latrine
Buster’s nearly 500 million dollars of investments have produced -0.1 of WAR as of 6/19/25. Raffy has some work to do. Here’s an ode to increase: https://youtu.be/YUIOlEOjxDo?feature=shared
G’s 1-19 (.53) RISP over first two games vs Cleveland.
oops, correction: .053
Giants have sure taking a beating by the AL Central going 1-10 091 pct yikes..
I noticed that too Kat … exactly … YIKES!!!
NL west vs AL central 2025:
Dogs 5-1
Pads 4-2
D’bags 5-5
Giants 1-10
Just me, but I wont blame Buster for signings that myself, 99.9% of the Flap, and SF Bay area endorsed. Particularly since, with this Devers signing – he’s showing the Bay Area that ownership wants to win.
I don’t blame FOs for making rational moves. Signing Adames was that. Verlander was more of a gamble, but hardly indefensible. It’s unfortunate that Adames is looking more Bogaerts-like with each passing day, which isn’t on the organization. Still time to turn it around ….
Agree. Team’s won/loss record is buying the “under performers” time to get their act together. Now, they need to go out and play to their respective abilities, as it is clear that our collective hitting is piss poor; base running inconsistent; and, our pitching is not going to “save the day” every game.
Just do it.
Koss starting at 2nd today. Fitz is at a stellar SLG .163 for the month of June. One xtra base hit. His glove has been iffy, too, which is not great if you can’t hit.
If he’s hurting from that rib fracture, then let’s get somebody in that actually can play at 100% of the talent they have. More evidence, as if any were needed, that the Giants real problem across the board for years now is lack of positional talent in the farm system. Koss in for Fitz? Deck chairs…
Posey makes things happen he’s bringing back the Giants unlike Farhan who sat on his ass and would never of gotten Devers like how he was all lip service thinking he was going to get Stanton,Othani,Harper are Judge coming here.Yeah it took a trade/and Adames FÃ to get here cause no big star would come here.Maybe that’s not all Zman but Posey has changed the whole team outlook that Farhan never would have with his basement bargain& dumpster diving approach!
Still this team needs to start hitting thru out the LU their still is holes to fill.Fitzgerald is totally loss, another outfielder would help as well.Devers needs his teammates to help him out.It will help when Chappy gets back! But for WAKE UP BATS is so frustrating to watch! RISP,DP,bad base running is killing them!
Well, the farm is the long-term problem. Also coaching these farm guys how to take a base, tag up, move runners, hit situationally, and work on not striking out so much.
But yeah, we have a lot of .220 guys. With no power. Or speed.
Yaz yak.
Must win today! Go Giants! I’m out of town for 2 days so won’t be watching. Likely a good thing. We haven’t won since that LA game Friday i went to. My BP getting high:)))
wow Leon Wagner in there as one of top 5 career sluggers vs. Cleveland. Spent first 2 ML seasons with Giants, 1958-59.
Looking up Wags debut box June 22 1958, Giants won in 14th on HR by Willie Kirkland another rookie in that year that Giants dealt away from overcrowded OF.
Got to agree whole heartedly with Kruk. This Smith is a player. What a freakin’ find for the Giants.
Schmitt beginning to be productive his last 20 ABs.
. . . and he’s left stranded at 3rd. Getting really tired of this “movie.”
Easily safe
Yeah Dom!
Nice D there by Smith. So far, the guy looks like a real professional w/good fundamentals. Not a Giants farmhand, of course…
9 year vet on his 5th team. Minus WAR player half of those years. solid w glove.
Yeah, he ain’t Lou Gehrig at the plate. But, he’s better than Wade and the Yanks dumped him…
The Giants are so pressed for a 1bman who has a shot at hitting that we take the Yanks “sloppy seconds” off their hands…
Can the Giants ever score 1st? 3 straight against the Indians they score 1st!
5 hits already for them, 1 measly hit for us..
More fucking RISP and come away empty handed.
Adames K’d on ball 4 was a killer in that frame…
Not unusual for him. He swings and misses at a lot of pitches no where near the strike zone.
On deck 76 emblem pretty cool to bad Their’s no gas in the bats…
As Jackson Browne would sing “Running on Empty”
Great play Koss no way Fitzgerald makes that one..
Chapman returns I’d keep Koss over Fitz.
Webb must be a patient type. Unless he goes off in the clubhouse and we don’t hear it. He rarely gets even decent run support. The current Cain. How tough would it be to make every start knowing you basically have to shutout the oppo to get a win? It’s like pitching for the ’62 Mets. Although, I don’t know for sure if this Giants offense is actually better than that team’s offense…
