That was rough. And I now remember why I don’t drink tequila anymore.
Also rough….
Per #SFGiants game notes: Koss becomes first Giant to hit into two double plays with no outs and the bases loaded in the same game since Jose Castillo vs Phillies in 2008.

I was at that game, too.

Poor Castillo didn’t have the benefit of batted ball MPH to limit his personal responsibility.
Speaking of MPH, Birdsong at 96-98 looks like an above average starter. Every other schmo throws 94-96 nowadays.
I don’t drink tequila anymore either.
I don’t drink tequila any less, well maybe a little less, now that I’m drinking more rum.
Tequila was good to me for a long time but it changed. Loved the Canadian bourbon’s, the only American whiskey i truly liked was Wild Turkey.
The Joaquin Murrieta is about the only thing I use tequila for:
1oz Reposado
1oz Amaro Montenegro
1oz Carpano Antica

Devers post-trade euphoria requires patience…but not for long. Devers needs to find his sea legs with Giants and adjust to Oracle Park and NL.
We’ve all talked about Giants avoiding prolonged losing skid. Experienced brief slump in May starting with Twins series then righted ship. Now in second slump in past week. Must ensure current slide doesn’t turn into extended 2-3 week free fall.
Offensively Devers solidified starting nine. but 2B and catcher remain glaring weak links at bat. Starting pitching has devolved into Webb & Ray and pray for rainy day. That might be slight exaggeration but Birdsong & Roupp inconsistent and Verlander winless and showing his age. For Giants to remain playoff contender in 2nd half of season they must get meaningful contributions from Birdsong and either Roupp or Whisenhunt. Can’t rely just on Webb & Ray. Verlander is wild card.
In short, Giants still have shortcomings.
They can survive with a less than hoped for boost from Devers. Agree that they will likely not make the playoffs if another 2/5 of the rotation goes to shit. Verlander is already there.
Giants have a 5-alarm black hole at second base. Fitz, Koss. Wisely? Urp. Virtually no run production in MONTHS, no hitting, rarely on base, and — questionable defense. Though, capable of great feats of Pffffttt in one game — like grounding into 2 double plays with bases loaded. And, NO 2b cavalry on the event horizon. At this rate, why not try Luciano — hasn’t he been tried at every other fielding spot except catcher? Gawd, I’d easily take stone hands Durham over this ClusterF.
Other than that, 2b is no problem.
BTW, after being hurt a ton since STraining for the Rox, Thairo is at a season (16 games) OPS at .729 and 7 hits in the last 5 games…
In the for what it’s worth column, it’s interesting that a baseball fantasy site, fantasypros, lists over 100 2d basemen in rankings for fantasy play. The first and only SF 2bman in the top 100 on the list comes in at:
99 — Casey Schmitt…
The defense rests your honor.
Wheelin&Dealing Buster should be on speed dial with Tampa Bay Rays to get 2B Brandon Lowe a pro that can actually HIT and with power! Its a joke how much Fitz&Koss, now Wisley lol are all ASS just AAA guys really, but there keep giving leash to Fitz for now and his 2 RBI’s in 2 months and dropping everyday batting average with no power anymore totally loss!!
Yeah I might be in the minority here but a clueless washed up hitting coach in Pat Burrell needs to go! Just go back to banging chicks, cause as a hitting coach you can’t get the bats to bang that’s for sure’!
Even a great winemaker can’t make good wine with crappy grapes, Kat…
Chapman, who injured himself getting picked off first, is why 2b is problem. Once he returns Schmitt can play there. He’s looked much better as a hitter lately given regular ABs.
All losing streaks prompt over reactions…Mets (only team with better pitching in NL than Giants) are on one right now and Yanks had lost 5 in a row including dropping home series to Angels. It’s a long season; if pitching holds (unlike yesterday) Giants can hang.
Mets have lost 7 in a row and fallen into 2nd. Team with Soto and Alonso. stuff happens.
Willie, come on. 2b has been a disaster zone of production since soon after the season’s good start faded. Chapman’s absence for the last 10 games didn’t suddenly turn 2b into Chernobyl…
Giants losers in 6 of last 8, with starters over that time at an ERA of 5.76 per Miller. Obviously pushed up by the Roupp disaster in LA, but still. Pen has been solid keeping team in games…
Baer would love you Willie. Are you on retainer with him? Schmitt has essentially shown jack in parts of 3 seasons (about 500ABs). Glad he is having this little streak, but he will go back to his “mean,” e.g., .225BA, .280 OBP, .653 OPS . . . Ask the statistical master, James.
Kat and snarrk are right, “2b has been a disaster” for multiple seasons.
I dunno if it’s worth mentioning, but Fitz’ production was much better when he was higher in the order. I think it was pointed out on the Flap a couple/few times. I’ll side with Willedav on the “ all losing streaks prompt over reactions” but have to agree that lack of 2nd bass production is glaring.
I’d throw Yaz into the mix of little-to-nothing guys. RF and 2nd base. need help. Bailey can catch but even Schmitt is a mystrey at this point.
Yaz hasn’t homered since April and is not driving in runs.
wow, no HRs since April ?!? Yikes!
so far, in June, Giants 31-144 (.215)RISP … I think I added that up correctly, but if not, I’m in the ballpark.
Birds sailed through first 2 innings retiring 6 straight. After that 8 of next 15 hitters he faced got on base via either BB or hit, including 2 doubles and HR while he blew 2 different leads.
yeah but … our pitching is really good overall, correct? Sure, the young guys are gonna get thumped every so often, it’s to be expected. But generally, the pitching has been near stellar. The RISP situation seems critical … I mean, bases loaded, none out .. it’s the same movie over & over .. facking ground-hog-day offensive offense.
Yes but not yesterday–neither Birds nor pen guys that followed. Melvin might have used Bivens sooner in hindsight. Sox pen held Giants scoreless after SP left.
Giants offensive stats and MLB Ranks from 2B
Avg .224 23rd
HR’s 3 T-26th
XBH 12 30th
OBP .279 27th
SLG .302 27th
OPS .581 27th
The Stats say it all they Suck near the bottom in all categories!
holy sheets Kat, those stats are so telling!
I noticed some offensive stats this morn and in most, G’s in the bottom 3rd of MLB (#20 and below).
Casey is not someone I’d be placing bets on, but if you’re looking for a glimmer of hope, he did pretty well last year in his 113 PAs, 760 OPS. He’s at 97 PAs this year, 737. He actually has 10 walks, too, which might be an indication that his ABs are a little more under control. All hail Pat the Bat! 🙂 Schmitt’s last 200 PA’s are production we could live with at second. But, again, not holding my breath.
With Devers arrival, these past few games, having him come to the plate is the first time since I cannot remember when, that I actually feel we have a real threat at the plate. Nobody else in the lineup conjures that sentiment in me (occasionally Mr Ed, and Lee has been pretty exciting to watch).
Hjelle No is gonna get cut for spousal abuse.
Beyond that, he sucks. Highway to Hjelle, indeed.
I just saw the headline … FFS! Devers must really be wondering where the fack he has landed.
nice play by Johnson. He’s an interesting bench player. Seems to cover CF well.
Roupp-dee-doo!
Vamos!
Ramos, going, going Gone.
RAMOS!
RAMOS !
I’ll think I will make a Ramos Fizz!
He’s one Giant atleast that can barrel up a pitch right now!
True Kat. Yaz, Dev & Adames, saw total of 6 pitches between them, made 3 outs. Ramos also saw 6pitches total.
Nice 6 pitch inning by Roup.
I used to be a regular on this blogs, so it is well documented how I feel about signing older players. When they signed Verlander I knew right away what a mistake that was. Just let him go.
there it is , LF bomb from Devers.
There ya go Boston! Missing him yet?
Hah! Devers delivers.
Raffy is the real deal … finally! Can’t wait to get him and Chapman swinging it together.
Yeah you right .
Hell yes oppo power to LF Green Monster are Cars it doesn’t matter, that’s a huge relief for Raffy getting his 1st bomb at home..
Rafy!
of course, I LOVE the HRs, sure would like to see some consistent small ball on occasion.
I’m gonna light some incense and give praise and gratitude at my temple of Buster!
Roupp is looking good today.
Yeah, he’s dealin’ this afternoon. Way, way better versus what he did in his last outing against the Bums.
yep, looking very good. Efficient, low pitch count for a change.
Rodriguez & Rogers, quite the relief tandem
oh joy, here we go ..
WHEW!
Got him! Dats a win.
TORTURE
Torture, W.
Collective whew!
Devers key hit . . . I’m sure he is feeling very good right now.
And the customery Gatorade Shower Dump by are designated Clown Willy Adames..
talk about a squeaky W, but we’ll take it.
watching the 9th and I do t know what happened but Doval had no idea the throw whizzed by his head as the guy was stealing. This team is fuc king brain dead.
did we blow this?
I’m sure Doval standing there like a tree altered that throw from Bailey
wow. This team is so unsound.
”unsound” .. perfect descriptive word. Nearing the 1/2 season mark that is exactly the sense I get.
How much more until they put Rodriguez as closer?
Doval is usually just a walk, an error, a seeing eye hit, bloop or whatever from brain scramble time…
Last thing. Why throw, Kniznznern? Doval can’t hold runners for shit, and the only outcome in throwing there is the bad one that happened. They were lucky the runner didn’t get to 3rd.
A win is a win, and I really dig the oppo shot by Devers, but Jesus Christ, this team gives away outs on the base paths, makes too many errors, and just looks like they aren’t quite ready to play. Chappie should help, but really, will he get his BA over .250? As it is, we have Ramos, Devers, and Flores, and a whole lot of whiff city.
Yaz’s 3rd inning AB is the story of his season. A long splash hit foul, and the K.
And hey, we got Tom Murphy just chomping at the bit to take his first AB in his 2 years as a Giant! In August?
If Buster is serious, he will do something about 2nd base. And maybe backup C. And RF.
I heard Baggs last week on KNBR.
He says Murphy ain’t comin’ back. Ever.
Giants “sent him home” to upstate NY or wherever. He’s done, at least with SF. Not a lot of explanation, sounds weird like not all due to the injury or rehab. Anyway, $8 million for what, about 6 weeks of part time catching? Egads…
Wow. Didn’t hear that about Murphy. Didn’t Mark DeRosa play about 24 games in 2 years?
Chuck is so right about fundamentals.
Look at the replay of that 9th inning throw to second. Adames can’t block it on the bounce. Fitz is late getting over to back up, he’s too close in back of the damn bag to allow for reaction time or get an angle on an overthrow, and instead of being in position facing the plate with his glove open and directed towards the plate so he can scoop and bluff or throw, he tries a backhand stab, and biffs it. Of course the runner at third sees the muff and the ball rolls away, he’s gone to score the run. Fundamentals phtttt…
And Doval almost got drilled in the ear because he had no clue the throw was coming.
I thought MisFitz rare combination of speed and power might be something special. WTF happened and why can’t he be helped?
So did I, when he first found a groove last year (or was it two seasons ago), I nearly envisioned another Robin Yount at SS. There are a few players on this team that clearly have some talent, but just not consistently. Don’t know why he can’t be helped. Hoping he can (and they sure should try), but if not, he’s not long for this team.
