Surviving Doval
Doval is going to be this team’s undoing at some point but for now at least we get to celebrate a win against a good team. I’m not really sure how you could look at his velo and his command and think “yeah let’s keep running this dude out there.” He’s a time bomb that he’s about to detonate. Again.
fwiw .. just checking in on Kyle Harrison’s progress with Bos’ AAA Aff. Worcester: 2G, 8INN, 13H, 3HR, 6SO, 7.88ERA, 2.00 WHIP
the drop in Doval’s FB velocity was pretty dramatic. His slider wasn’t consistent. He was unpredictably wild with everything. At least once he hung one in the center of the zone. Not closer stuff. Im not sure he’ll survive until the AS break.
the DP at the end was as lucky as that crucial Chapman AB that the ump’s myopia made possible. I wouldn’t press my luck with Doval, though.
yep, your “wild & weak” comment yesterday was spot on.
you’re all worthless and weak!
Ah, yeah Chuck that pretty much sums me up!
And, speaking of worthless & weak .. of former qualifiers in G’s uniform, Late Night hit a go ahead single in 6th for Angels last night to beat Texas 6-5
Yeah, that was a pretty spot-on comment from xoot.
You highbrow music guys put me to shame.
I of course go for Twisted Sister. Well, not really. Too candy-ass.
Yeah, even when Doval with throwing in the 100s, I thought he went to his offspeed stuff too much.
With the loss of velocity, he has to do that even more.
Kontos commented last night on the post game show that Doval’s FB is his best pitch but he has lost confidence in it lately and thus the preponderance of sliders. Very difficult to rebuild that confidence but he MUST find a way do so to retain the closer position.
Also, the post game interview with Walker was revealing. He said in the recent 11-2 blow out to the A’s, when inserted into the game he was able to relax and try some some stuff out (because the game wasn’t exactly on the line at that point) and felt he made a breakthrough which carried over into his appearance last night. I thought it was revealing that he was able to make some progress toward getting back to last year’s form by way of situation where the game was a blow out, so no pressure, allowing him to discover a possible fix. I guess it is very difficult for a pitcher to make adjustments on the fly while trying maintain a lead and/or hold the other team down. Maybe even more difficult to find those fixes between games when not in full on competing mode.
As for the ‘highbrow’ music stuff. Man, you and some others have posted clips here of music that has, time and time again, blown my mind! Some I recognize peripherally but a lot I’ve never heard before.
BB, Doval has always thrown a lot of sliders. See
https://www.fangraphs.com/players/camilo-doval/21992/stats?position=P
He had great years in 2022 and 23. In 22 he threw the slider over half the time, in 23 he relied more on the cutter and sinker. From what I can glean, only in 23 were the two types of fastball as effective as his slider. That was also the year he threw more fastballs. The results were just the opposite in 24, when his fastballs got hammered.
When he’s pitching poorly, we still see him going to his slider and the tendency is to blame the pitch. It’s the one pitch that’s been consistently good for him over his career, at least according to the specialized stats.
I don’t know. When he gets in trouble, either through walks or through serving up taters, it’s usually the slider that fails him.
Maybe last year he just get scared that guys were simply waiting for the fastball to hammer so he went with his sinker more at the cost of throwing cheese.
Yesterday he looked like Birdie. Just all over the place.

An old fave
They played in front of city hall at the great american smoke-out in 1978. Great fun . . .
Slider does seem to be his default. Great if he’s ahead, not so great when not. And of course when he hangs one it’s usually trouble. Sure been shaking off Bailey lot lately. despite drama last night, he didn’t ever give up a hit.
Highbrow music guys? I played in a fucking punk polka band.
Hmmm, not all well in Giants Land?
Will Clark says that Devers skipped 3 meetings to work on his playing 1st base.
The caveat being that he was supposed to meet with Clark on the weekend of the Boston series. Devers may very well have been a bit averse to working on his 1st base skills in front of his home team 4 days after he left for the same reason.
So, as usual, clickbait bullshit?
Who knows? I though Devers himself said he’s fine with 1st base. Seeing as both Chappie and Schmitt are back, there is a bit of a log jam. Wilbur sure has cooled off so he could use a few days rest.
And the Dominator’s days could be numbered as well…
“back ailment” preventing Devers from working out at 1B.

Yeah Devers isn’t going to bother with 1B at all till after the A/S break.Groin, back the break will do him good.He still wants to DH every game , and Melvin will do that cause he doesn’t want in hassles with his new shiny toy..
Clark being Clark is probably butt hurt that Devers blew him off fielding some balls, catches, footwork but for now no big deal..

Stellar pitching by Ray to K Schwarber and get Harper on ground out on snag by Dom Smith.
Not sure how they could pull it off, but I’d sure love it if they kept Smith on the roster. That dude can pick it.
Landen Roupp on the difference between Posey&Farhan..
If I have a bad start are 2 I would be on the Sacramento bus back under the yo yo approach by Farhan. Not being allowed to work thru mechanics..
Posey Let’s The young guys fight thru some rough patches, which makes a younger player feel better that they might not get sent down right away.
And Roupp is right imo, Farhan never had patience, you don’t want to be the orq that continues the shuttle bus 🚌
Roupp started 4 games last September and has been in the rotation all of 25. During that stretch, he’s basically had one really bad start. Is he bitching on behalf of Keaton Winn?
Ray is not going 9 tonight.
I knew I shouldn’t have posted the Klink Link.
Just ran out of gas. last 2 pitches weren’t where he wanted them.
Treat to watch him handle Harper tonight.
0-2. No reason for Bivens to throw anything near the plate.
Yep but he did and Schwarber said this cove thing is no big deal..
Crazy to me how many swing and misses Devers has for an “elite hitter”. yes he is walking, but I can’t remember the last time he got a fat pitch and drilled it. Because my expectations are high I am more frustrated at his continued failure to drive the ball.
In 92 plate appearances he has 2 homers and 9 rbi’s. That’s a 10 homer 55 rbi pace. Awful.
May as well add the 29Ks.
rocket from wilmet
WOWWWW!!!
Yaha! Might never see that again!
Holy fucking shit! The team’s worst hitter does the job.
holy shit! Inside the park HR for Bailey? Terrific.
Off the top of the wall, a perfect Oracle robbery, and justice triumphs!!
For once, it really was a home run in every ballpark.
Seem to remember earlier in the season when they were winning winning winning, there seemed to be real confidence they could win even down by 1 or 2 in late innings. If they can get that back again, that would go a long way…..
I feel like Craig in 2010! What just happened??
bailey inside the park walkoff the craziest result ever!!!!
OMG THAT WAS EPIC!!!
Bailey on the move, Bailey on the move,Bailey on the move!!!
Freaking inside the park walkoff HR
by a Catcher standing up!!!
Pagan’s got nothing on you with that one ☝️
Per Phil’s guy Matt Gelb the Fightins have lost 18 of last 21 at Oracle.
That bodes well for the post season. 🙂
That was jusr nuts!
In 2000 at the Vet, I saw Bobby Abreu beat the Giants with a walkoff inside-the-park home run. It took 25 years, but payback’s a bitch!
San Francisco Giants vs Philadelphia Phillies Box Score: August 27, 2000 | Baseball-Reference.com
Ha good one! Poor Bailey–how far does he have to hit one to get HR?
I think Bailey hit another one in nearly the same spot earlier in the year. A less optimal result.
Yeah, saw that on Twitter. I don’t remember that one, apparently the last walkoff inside-the-park HR with a team down multiple runs before Bailey’s.
I think I listened to that one on WCAU sitting up in a tree on Ocean Parkway…
Man, that turf was the worst. Might as well been concrete.
