Bailey’s Bounce!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 9, 2025

Yeah, I didn’t see that till this morning. Wow. You know what SanDawg would say: “our park sucks man, we gotta move the fences in.” He’s not wrong.

One thing to notice about the Pagan bomb, take a look at the nod he gives Flannery at the 2:08 mark. That’s a man confident in his 3rd base coach. I’m guessing Williams doesn’t get head nods like that.

And just for quick comparison, here’s Bailey’s. Kuip has REALLY lost a lot on his calls in the last 12 years, goddamn. Sorry, this one’s the entire inning so you gotta scroll to get to it. Bailey’s Bounce was more glorious than Pagan’s, too

I’m definitely no fan of the smug new Dave Flemming, but that’s partly becz I think he could be really good. This tweeter is right. His radio call of the HR was excellent.

yeah that was great he was fired up, thanks. entire half inning was great (thanks Flav for Kuip call)–Schmitt with line drive double to LF, flores almost takes pitcher’s head off with another line drive up the middle and Bailey of all people crushes one to deepest part of the yard.

Speaking of Bailey, A’s beat ATL 10-1 last night in Sac, 5th consecutive L and 7 of 8. Would they sell Sean Murphy?

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 9, 2025 at 7:01 am

weird game. I think the a’s scored nine runs in the first two innings on four HRs. Something like that.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 9, 2025 at 7:07 am

Yep. Butler led off A’s first with inside the park HR of his own then hit another one later, and Kurtz had a grand slam in 3rd (I think). 2 separate 2 run HRs in first for 5-0 lead per Chron.

as to Bailey, murphy’s current contract looks like one of those long term deals Atlanta usually sees through to the end. Cf. Acuna, Freeman.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 9, 2025 at 7:56 am

Could be–$15 mil for next 3 years plus team option. Braves have played kid Baldwin at C for 60 games and he’s hitting well. They are 39-51, seem dead in water for this season.

Murph isn’t hitting for average (.225) but 13 HRs .478 slugging. more pop than in Oakland days (friendlier yard I guess) when he did play for Melvin. Wonder what Melvin would say to Posey about him if asked. No idea what Braves would want back. Luci?

Luciano plus I bet. Hicks and Luciano were my picks to be dealt by the break.

That Pagan HR was so exciting to watch. It still kinda sucks that he got hurt and the team’s fortunes seemed to change shortly after that (from what I remember, the team just stopped hitting for a month or so). Funny to watch that ball scoot far away from the OFers, reminded me of poor ol’ Wade Meckler when that ball rolled far away from him on top of the padding, oy. Felt sorry for the guy. Yeah, say what we will about Matty, but it looked like he enjoyed getting into his windmill…

Clark looked out of sorts after first quarter. Stuck on 2 hoops with 2 turnovers and getting scored upon at other end. Her team got outscored 20-9 in second quarter and trail by 9 at half. I’m surprised A Boston isn’t tougher more physical D player. she allows smaller players to take ball right at her and score as last line of defense.

In a moment of angst last night, Angel Reese slapped the clipboard out of a coach’s hands. Her team loses a lot, and she’s not the WNBA superstar she thought she was going to be. She’s an OK player, but nothing spectacular.

Yeah I was amazed the speed shown by Bailey he found an extra gear, once it started out as almost out in Triples Alley(418 RF) caromed all the way to LC 391 Area he had a great chance and standing up and gassed and they still wanted to interview him huffing and puffing for breath I bet he didn’t need that, along with class clown Adames adding the Gatorade ( getting old)

Can’t forget his gun down of Schawber at 3rd another huge play!Hes still one of the best at gunning down runners and framing pitches, if his torpedo bat ever gets better it’s just another weapon in the LU..He plays the most demanding position in baseball (bangs up every body part from head concussions to feet, arm, shoulders , plays at the plate, 125 and more throws just back to a pitcher in a game is wear and tear,so I cut him a lot of slack, their would be many teams happy to have him behind the plate in an instant..

Listened to three calls on train into city this morn: Kuip/Kruk, D Flemming & Tom McCarthy/Ruben Amaro (Phils). Agree with consensus of views on blog. Thought Flemming had best call, Phils announcers 2nd best and Kuip/Kruk last.

Granted, tv calls should differ from radio calls where broadcaster needs to paint fuller picture of action on field but I thought Flemming nailed it. Also give credit to Phils announcers who despite being crestfallen recognized historic uniqueness of moment. Kuip/Kruk cane across as tired and just thankful game over. Dynamic Duo has delivered many classic broadcasts over 3+ decades but sadly better days behind them.

Then again we are all aging 🫩.

Bailey’s earlier line drive single is a minor addendum, but I’m still hoping he gets his numbers up to an acceptable MLB level. I’ve never bought the he’s been tired in the second half theory. The general pattern is a long stretch of completely miserable ABs and another where he’s actually ok.

“The priority now has to be a RH OFer with some power.” IMO, that should’ve been a priority in the off-season: A RFer better than Yaz and Matos (fine with Yaz as 4th OFer). I still think Devers Chappie et al will perform better in the 2nd half (and Lee too, if DimBulb BoMel would put him back at leadoff where he flourished). This still looks like a team that should hit better. Suddenly, the strong pitching is looking hobbled. I also still think Birdie will be fine, his stuff is too good, Verlander, who knows. And I’m really not sure why the likes of Beck, Winn, Black are still on the team. They were never going to be anything wonderful.

One more “also still think” — Unless the team completely craters in the next 3 weeks, Buster will definitely be a buyer at the trade deadline, something surprising…

  57. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 9, 2025 at 7:32 pm

Yeah, I think the regulars will come around.

But Yaz is little to nothing, Matos the same. Lee needs someone to tell him that he needs a longer bat to reach all the outside offspeed shit he’s gonna see forever. Or lay the fuck off it.

on Lee B/R page under splits 2025 his 2 best spots in order are 2nd and 3rd. He has 200 ABs batting 3rd at .275. Batting leadoff he hits 172.

I’d say best thing any hitter can do to help team score runs is to get on base, whether you bat first or last. Sure sac flies score runs. But not making an out and just getting on first base increases odds your team scores quite a bit. And unfortunately Giants are near bottom of NL in team OBP and OPS. It’s team wide issue.

sac bunts too but often losing out in an inning reflects badly on run expectancy.

    • [Gil teaches his son about the sacrifice fly ball while watching the game]
    • Gil Renard: Don’t get greedy, son. Don’t get greedy. What we need now is a sacrifice. A winning team has to know how to manufacture runs. Coop taught me that. He used to say the most beautiful play in the game is a sacrifice fly. You know why?
    • Richie Renard: ‘Cause you give yourself up for the team?
    • Gil Renard: And it doesn’t even count against your average. That’s why baseball’s better than life. It’s fair.

Fine, then bat him 2nd or 3rd. I don’t know why I seem to remember him leading off for most of April and hitting over .300, but whatever. It seemed like Melvin moved him down in the order after a great start to try to give him more RBI possibilities, but that hasn’t worked. He’s not an RBI guy, he’s a table setter. He certainly isn’t hitting .275 in the 7 hole….
