A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Just Waste These Fools

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 11, 2025

Look, this is very doable. They’ve lost 6 in a row. They have injured hitters and pitchers. It’s in our yard. And, most importantly, Hubie Doobie isn’t going to any of these games.

Some of you may have seen Lee Elia passed away. Here’s that epic rant from the 80s if you want to listen to someone go off. He sure doesn’t like that 15% “who don’t work.” Lol.

Phils fans in TA were livid about Chapman AB, “strike 5” non calls. Phil Cuzzi apparently burned them years ago too.

That audio clip of Elia never fails to make me laugh. Elia didn’t last the season as Cubs finished 71-91. His successor? Charlie Fox.

  4. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 11, 2025 at 8:14 am

Yeah Charlie Fox (known as the Silver Fox managed the Giants for 5 seasons winning the pennant in 1971 in Chris Speier’s rookie season! Thought they had a good chance to go to the W/S but Pirates had other plans and I still remember Bob Robertson crushing HR’s that killed them .Turned out to Roberto Clemente last season as he died in a plane crash a few months after the season

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 11, 2025 at 8:44 am

Having to use Marichal on the last day of the season to hold off the Dodgers didn’t help.

I went to game 1 of that series and thought we were on our way to the World Series.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 11, 2025 at 8:45 am

Clemente played in 72 Kat. Here’s his last game. It’s as if he came in just to say goodbye.
I wonder if he was planning to retire…

Thanks Loo, love these. Clemente at age 38 still hitting .312. Al Oliver in CF?

there was note in TA column about guys who homered off 2 HOFers in same game. Billy Williams did it at Wrigley vs. Giants in July 1967, off Marichal in first and Perry in 9th (why he was in there for save idk) who was brought in to save game and instead blew it on hit by Randy Hundley. Hart was in LF that day for SF.

Clyde King was was the first manager I noticed as a kid growing up. I vividly remember listening to the Giants game vs the Padres in mom’s Galaxie convertible on the way to Santa Cruz that the Giants lost 17-16 in 15 innings.

Giants were down 2 in the 9th and tied it at like 12-12. Went back and forth till the Pads won in the 15th.

King was fired and Fox was hired after that game.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 11, 2025 at 8:53 am

The Giants finally winning the WS in 2010 might have been too much for Clyde. He passed away the following day…

Epic fail disaster of a game. With all the hitters btw both teams the light hitting SS gets the bomb that wins it. Same Clyde King that helped Yanks later, right?

started going down the winding road of baseball reference. Started at Al Oliver and when I got to Fred Breining (easily the goofiest looking fuck not named Johnny Lemaster) I saw he won 22 games for us across 2 seasons and then pitched 4 games for the Expos the next year and then that was it. Career over. 28 years old. What happened to him that it ended so fast?

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 11, 2025 at 9:47 am

Loved Breining and I won’t bring up10/1/82 for the 40th time here. He had some kind of arm injury that they could probably fix nowadays…

    • James's avatar James said, on July 11, 2025 at 9:50 am

I’ll never forgive Al Oliver for hitting ZERO bombs in 360 PAs as a Giant. How was that even possible? Pull the fucking ball to RF!

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 11, 2025 at 10:17 am

Yeah I remember that year. Still can’t believe he was CF earlier. winding road of B/R, yeah easy to get stuck there. Transactions usually fun trip on whomever you look up. plus all those boxscores of guys you remember.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 11, 2025 at 11:39 am

James… I’ll never forget Randy Winn in 2009 in 538 PA (597 overall)he hit 2 HR’s and that was late in the season!Screaming for Schierholtz to take over in RF but of course Bochy stays with his Vet as always.Nate did hit 5 HR’s that same season,so double up on Winn in 285 PA..

Yeah I remember AL Oliver’s season he was already washed up at 37 when the Giants got him, but still “PULL The Ball” 0HR’s pathetic..

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on July 11, 2025 at 10:26 am

From Wiki: His career was cut short when pitching to Ray Knight, when he fielded a bunt and threw it to first, only to blow out his shoulder. Breining never played another inning as a Major Leaguer

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 11, 2025 at 1:34 pm

The big unit’s career ended on a bunt.

  8. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 11, 2025 at 1:52 pm

goddamn, not only did Al Oliver not hit a single bomb in 360 at bats with us he had 100 at bats with the Phillies that year too and didn’t hit a bomb. He had 219 for his career.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 11, 2025 at 4:10 pm

Speaking of non power 1b, Giants got Willie Montanez from Phils for Garry Maddox in 1975 who spent 10 years there and won WS in 1980. After parts of 2 years, Montanez was traded to Braves for Darrell Evans, wonderful ballplayer.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 11, 2025 at 4:44 pm

Rennie Stennett was the one that pissed me off. A real nothingburger.

And I was pissed we let BIll Madlock go to the Pirates for their WS run.

Huh. We got Ed Whitson, Al Holland, and . . . Fred Breining! for Madlock. Ooops.

I seem to remember Whitson and Holland being OK but I’d have to look.

Forgot that we GOT Madlock for Bobby Murcer.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 11, 2025 at 4:58 pm

Holland was OK for Giants under Frank Robinson, but Giants had Lavelle and Moon Boy. He and Morgan wound up in the trade for Krukow and Mark Davis with Phils, and wound up being their closer for couple years per SABR bio. Phils lost WS in 1983 to O’s.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 11, 2025 at 6:16 pm

In this 83 Giants game, in the ninth the Phillies loaded the bases with two outs and Joe Morgan on deck, and the Philly manager PH for Morgan with RH hitting Ozzie Virgil. Lavelle was pitching. I still remember the explosive tantrum Morgan threw as he charged through the dugout to the tunnel. Then Virgil hit a walk off grand slam.

The indignity of being pulled for a PH in a clutch situation against the team that traded him away. Man was Joe pissed off.
