Bring It On!
I had a nice, needed break from baseball. Didn’t watch the Derby or any of the all star game. And The Skipper provided a nice trip down memory lane of some great Giants history.
Interesting choice to have Verlander start today. He actually pitched pretty well in that 13-zip demolition at the hands of the Phillies. I’m going to lean positive here and say he kick starts the second half with a good start and we don’t have to stare at that ugly 0-7 any longer.
Soft spot for Neukom finally releasing Rowand August 2011. Also think Loo is right about Posey taking on $$. Giants fans might have to be content with Randal Grichuk.
Yeah I think that’s our kinda guy, Willie.
Grichuk at Oracle in 73 AB: 4/11/.288/.845 and 5 doubles ain’t bad at all…
FanGraphs gives Giants 45% odds to make playoffs. Padres just above at 47%. FanGraphs bullish on Phils, Mets, Cubs, Brewers & Dodgers reaching postseason with Giants, Padres, Cards & Reds battling for final wild card spot.
Of course landscape changes in two weeks when dust settles from trade deadline moves. Can Posey convince ownership to spend more meaningful $$$? I’m skeptical. 1B, 2B or RF upgrade would be nice.
We need Roupp to continue pitching solid and Verlander to do his best Blake Snell 2nd half of 2024 impersonation to give lift to Webb & Ray. Barring significant acquisition at trade deadline, I think more likely Giants just miss playoffs than sneak in. Time to play ball and hope fate smiles on Oracle Park.
If we want to continue down memory lane my HS baseball teammate Keith Comstock who pitched 20 innings in relief with the Giants in 1987 before he was dealt in the Giants fleeced job of Mitchell,Draveky,&Lefferts..
But he has a great story about his Baseball Card when he was bouncing around from MLB&Minors ..He was pitching for Las Vegas Stars and a company Topps? maybe some one else ,anyway Keith was always a prankster going back to are babe Ruth days, somehow he managed to get The Greatest Baseball Card ever taken :It’s called the “Nutcracker” you’ll no when you see it, even ESPN had an article on it..
2great articles ( long but excellent) about his journeys to get to the “The Show”
I don’t know how to post pictures are paste articles on here but if someone could the picture is EPIC it will crack you up!! Just google up Keith Comstock and go to his baseball cards , I talked about it with him at are 50th reunion last September he said yeah Bob it was right up at the top along when I stole the team bus in the minors and hit a fire hydrant and ended up in jail..Hey 70’s-80’s we’re different times then today..

I once got a job cause the guy interviewing me went to school with Dick Estelle…
I think I mentioned this before . . . I once had a job interview that consisted exclusively of Baseball Digest Quick Quiz questions. The job was not baseball related.
Love that, James. Wonder if stuff like this still goes on today? In 1976, I had to take a polygraph to work on Wall Street. Ed Asner lookalike administering the test asked me if I gamble. I said ” Well, I like the racetrack”. Immediately unhooked me and talked horses for 2 solid hours. HIRED!
Cultural fit, man, it’s still a legit criterion!
When I interviewed for Intel, the manager asked me, “if you were a dog, what kind would you be?”
Followed by if you were a tree . . .”
My dog answer was “half yellow lab and half pitbull because I am loyal and tough”
Can’t remember the tree answer but I got the job.
At the time I was contracting at EDS for peanuts. Fucking Ross Perot . . .
per NBC sports Posey said on KNBR he isn’t concerned about innings limits and wants younger SPs “to go as deep into games as they possibly can ” See how rotation goes rest of trip and when Birds gets next start
OMFG!!!
I remember Comstock. This quote is epic:
“In 1983, the Oakland A’s sold me to the Detroit Tigers for $100 and a bag of balls. I had to deliver the balls.”
interviewing for my first summer legal job in Sac after one yr of law school the managing partner asked me how well I played softball. You need a dead pull hitting 3B? Hired. Great season. Slow pitch but semi serious.
Matt Gage ? Called up?
Shit, he was drafted with Webbie in 2014. Ex- BJ.
Fabulous lifetime numbers!
Opening day at Del Mar. There’s neat column in Athletic about Otto Kemp who played D2 ball at beautiful park with views of ocean near San Diego. Point Loma Nazarene.
Gage can’t be any worse then Alexander was who just downright stunk.
I figure they will give him a few relief appearances and if he doesn’t pan out they need to make a trade for an experienced LH reliever cause with Miller likely done for the year they need help there.Luchessi is ok but not overwhelming ..See what happens their along with OF,C maybe a back end SP ..
Jays last home stand they went 7-0 on back end of 10 game winning streak. Before AS break they lost 3 of 4 on road to White Sox and A’s.
Same shit…
yep
I’ve only heard of 3 guys in BJ lineup. I’m a bad baseball fan…
I’d be shocked if the Giants didn’t lead all of MLB in GIDP.
At least it makes their LOB stat look better…
You’re fully justified not looking and simply believing.
and useless weak-ass pop outs.
Verlander’s stuff looks good again, those hitters just keep foiling him.
Whose bright idea was it to start winless Verlander the first game after the break on a 2-game losing vs. one of the hottest teams going?
And here we go with Verlander getting raked over the coals again! 3-0 as Jays look for more..
It’s batting practice for Bluejays! 4-0 V is toast they need to dump his ass!
Crawford’s thinking he’s tarnishing my 35 jersey number bigtime!
Verlanderham living up to his name. Then again he will get 0 run support.
Run support? Doesn’t matter with Verlander he will give up more runs than their capable of scoring..
What a great signing Verlander was, batting practice
Verlander should be an opener for 1 inning
I think the Mets paid a fortune to unload him. If that’s accurate it should tell you something…
I truly thought Verlander had more than this left to offer. Some lucky ground ball hits today. But some very hard hits too. HR on the horizon , I can sense it rising. Especially if they trot him back out there for the fourth.
ahhhh! Relief!
It is a weird unraveling. Is his fastball that straight and easy to rake at 96? Is the breaking stuff really that much different from when he was successful? It’s not like you can merely sit on it when he’s still throwing mid-90s. He usually throws the ball where he intends to, not much different from anybody else, AFAICT.
I dunno. Look at vlad’s first inning AB. Verlander’s straight 94-95 mph FBs missed the corners, except for one. He walked him on five pitches. I think that FB is pretty much unspottable.
Verlander’s not happy about bringing pulled in 3rd inning? Too bad. His leash is getting very short. If he doesn’t right ship in next two weeks, Giants should demote him to bullpen. He’s won as many games for Giants in 2025 as number of wins he compiled in 2012 WS against Giants…..0.
Feel for the positive vibes thoughts by BF going into the V start..
But let’s get real he needs to RETIRE and not get another start !
0-8 and continues to get raked!!
I can’t even look at his line 9 hits in 2 2/3 innings walks hit HBP ERA I don’t know are give a shit it’s over 5 plus..
Giants should of started 2 Openers..Pitlock&Comstock!
Got any more rhyming Giants?
Madlock, Chris Brock (6-8 in 1999) no recollection of him other than the name…
Reminder that Willy Adames has NOT yet turned his season around. He is still the single biggest reason the Giants offense has not performed closer to expectations. It’s certainly not Yaz, who has put up respectable numbers, as he always does.
What about Chappie?
.237 is the high water mark?
Surely you must be joking.
His career BA is .240
Fuck that. Yaz sucks.
Devers got a hit where he didn’t look like he was swinging out of his shoes. Hope. verlander? Not so much:(
While we’re getting in our gripes, why is Pat the Bat still the hitting coach? Posey talked offseason about grinding out AB’s but Giants hitting discipline sorely lacking. Down 4 runs no excuse for Yaz to swing at two off speed pitches out of strike zone when Giants need runners. Yaz is simply not lead off hitter. Should be batting 6th or 7th in order. Had Bassett on ropes early and couldn’t plate single run.
Yes, flip Lee and Yaz in the lineup
AGREE!
Over the season, Yaz has shown far better plate discipline than Lee. He has the best walk percentage on the Giants.
early season Lee thrived a-top the order, the further down he went, the slumpier he got.
Good to wake up to baseball again. Checks box score: through the first 4 innings, Jays with 9 hits, Giants with 7, hey now! But 4 runs to none. Just can’t seem to string ’em together, can they…
Can’t make out names or number on BJ’s stupid uniforms, not like that’s the point of them…
Yup like those awful Niner jerseys from a few years back.
In the months of May and July Yaz has 4 RBI.
And Lee tries to pull yet another down and away ball and grounds out to 2nd.
Lee’s last HR was May 14. He came in on tear, 12-37. Previous to that , 2-36. Entire Month of June 12-84, .143. League maybe figured him out, hmmn?
Watch his last 300 ABs. Down and away 90% of the time.
He seems to think he’s Sadaharu Oh.
This team is SO FUCKING BORING.
MoTel Hell just can’t stop fucking around with the leadoff hitter du jour. SET A FUCKING LINEUP!!!
Buster has to do something about Williams and Burrell.
To start. Melvin should be at the end of his rope.
Funny watching Bailey not being able to track anything off the bat.
Maybe they should do a mercy trade and send Verlander back to Detroit where he can retire possibly with a WS ring this year, the one Verlander thought he was gonna get in 2012…
$100 and a bucket of balls sounds about right.
They have a little ways to go to reach 15 hits without scoring a run in a 9 inning game. Amazingly, they had 5 walks and 2 HBP for 22 baserunners.

I’m pretty sure I remember Marichal throwing a CG vs. Mets while allowing 16 hits and a bunch of runs…
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN196806150.shtml
Great Mac, thanks! So much for the Seaver-Marichal pitching duel. Don Bosch, Jesus…
Holy shit, that’s a crazy box score.
Fucking fool. Come on Matos
10 hits without a run, that’s hard to do.
They had 6 hits in 2-1/3 innings.
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
The basepaths must feel like Gilligan’s Island to the Giants…
a three hour tour.
a 3 hour nap.
In the 70s, a Cubs pitcher whose name I don’t recall anymore, pitched a complete game 13 hitter against the Giants. I think they scored 1 or 2 runs. This is up there.
Is this it?
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN197108070.shtml
Pepi hitting clean-up!
Nope, they definitely did not score 5 runs.
Was it Reuschel?
Jeff Beck’s pitching a nice game.
Nobody that good.
Only other guy I got is Ex-Gi Steve Stone.
Verlanderham with the snowman.
Maybe Lost Cause Beck earned a start tonight. It’s worked out swell for Tweety…
Wow, down and away and Lee pulls it to 1st.
It would be cool if this team had a hitting coach that would get out of the hot tub every once in a while to teach something.
Gotta say, Schmitt looks pretty good at 2nd. He’s gets to shit well. And his arm is way more than enough for 2nd.
Well as usual the bullpen kept them in the game
11 hits and 11 K’s
Symmetry at it’s finest.
oops 12 k’s
Second verse same as the first.
Can’t win with zero numbers on the board
Frizzle Fry indeed. No wonder ESPN ignroes this team. it is absolutely a snoozefest.
But you gotta like the tribute to Geddy Lee . . .
James, this has gotta be it.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN197405270.shtml
Yes, the Ken Frailing masterpiece! I just found it myself and was going to post it. My memory was pretty off on the hits and runs, but it was still a total nightmare of offensive futility innings 2-8.
I’m still not sure why they started the second half with V. I would have thought Ray, Webb, and Roupp before Verlander.
cannon fodder? Time to cut bait
10 hits not bad! Too bad they were never .2 in a row:(
I asked siri. Most hits in a game without scoring is 13. Giants had 12 in a game in 1969. GRR
