A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bring It On!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 18, 2025

I had a nice, needed break from baseball. Didn’t watch the Derby or any of the all star game. And The Skipper provided a nice trip down memory lane of some great Giants history.

Interesting choice to have Verlander start today. He actually pitched pretty well in that 13-zip demolition at the hands of the Phillies. I’m going to lean positive here and say he kick starts the second half with a good start and we don’t have to stare at that ugly 0-7 any longer.

Soft spot for Neukom finally releasing Rowand August 2011. Also think Loo is right about Posey taking on $$. Giants fans might have to be content with Randal Grichuk.

Yeah I think that’s our kinda guy, Willie.

Grichuk at Oracle in 73 AB: 4/11/.288/.845 and 5 doubles ain’t bad at all…

FanGraphs gives Giants 45% odds to make playoffs. Padres just above at 47%. FanGraphs bullish on Phils, Mets, Cubs, Brewers & Dodgers reaching postseason with Giants, Padres, Cards & Reds battling for final wild card spot.

Of course landscape changes in two weeks when dust settles from trade deadline moves. Can Posey convince ownership to spend more meaningful $$$? I’m skeptical. 1B, 2B or RF upgrade would be nice.

We need Roupp to continue pitching solid and Verlander to do his best Blake Snell 2nd half of 2024 impersonation to give lift to Webb & Ray. Barring significant acquisition at trade deadline, I think more likely Giants just miss playoffs than sneak in. Time to play ball and hope fate smiles on Oracle Park.

If we want to continue down memory lane my HS baseball teammate Keith Comstock who pitched 20 innings in relief with the Giants in 1987 before he was dealt in the Giants fleeced job of Mitchell,Draveky,&Lefferts..

But he has a great story about his Baseball Card when he was bouncing around from MLB&Minors ..He was pitching for Las Vegas Stars and a company Topps? maybe some one else ,anyway Keith was always a prankster going back to are babe Ruth days, somehow he managed to get The Greatest Baseball Card ever taken :It’s called the “Nutcracker” you’ll no when you see it, even ESPN had an article on it..
2great articles ( long but excellent) about his journeys to get to the “The Show”

I don’t know how to post pictures are paste articles on here but if someone could the picture is EPIC it will crack you up!! Just google up Keith Comstock and go to his baseball cards , I talked about it with him at are 50th reunion last September he said yeah Bob it was right up at the top along when I stole the team bus in the minors and hit a fire hydrant and ended up in jail..Hey 70’s-80’s we’re different times then today..

Love that, James. Wonder if stuff like this still goes on today? In 1976, I had to take a polygraph to work on Wall Street. Ed Asner lookalike administering the test asked me if I gamble. I said ” Well, I like the racetrack”. Immediately unhooked me and talked horses for 2 solid hours. HIRED!

When I interviewed for Intel, the manager asked me, “if you were a dog, what kind would you be?”

Followed by if you were a tree . . .”

My dog answer was “half yellow lab and half pitbull because I am loyal and tough”

Can’t remember the tree answer but I got the job.

I figure they will give him a few relief appearances and if he doesn’t pan out they need to make a trade for an experienced LH reliever cause with Miller likely done for the year they need help there.Luchessi is ok but not overwhelming ..See what happens their along with OF,C maybe a back end SP ..

I truly thought Verlander had more than this left to offer. Some lucky ground ball hits today. But some very hard hits too. HR on the horizon , I can sense it rising. Especially if they trot him back out there for the fourth.

    • James's avatar James said, on July 18, 2025 at 5:20 pm

It is a weird unraveling. Is his fastball that straight and easy to rake at 96? Is the breaking stuff really that much different from when he was successful? It’s not like you can merely sit on it when he’s still throwing mid-90s. He usually throws the ball where he intends to, not much different from anybody else, AFAICT.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 18, 2025 at 5:52 pm

I dunno. Look at vlad’s first inning AB. Verlander’s straight 94-95 mph FBs missed the corners, except for one. He walked him on five pitches. I think that FB is pretty much unspottable.

  25. Dean's avatar Dean said, on July 18, 2025 at 5:15 pm

Verlander’s not happy about bringing pulled in 3rd inning? Too bad. His leash is getting very short. If he doesn’t right ship in next two weeks, Giants should demote him to bullpen. He’s won as many games for Giants in 2025 as number of wins he compiled in 2012 WS against Giants…..0.

Reminder that Willy Adames has NOT yet turned his season around. He is still the single biggest reason the Giants offense has not performed closer to expectations. It’s certainly not Yaz, who has put up respectable numbers, as he always does.

  31. Dean's avatar Dean said, on July 18, 2025 at 5:40 pm

While we’re getting in our gripes, why is Pat the Bat still the hitting coach? Posey talked offseason about grinding out AB’s but Giants hitting discipline sorely lacking. Down 4 runs no excuse for Yaz to swing at two off speed pitches out of strike zone when Giants need runners. Yaz is simply not lead off hitter. Should be batting 6th or 7th in order. Had Bassett on ropes early and couldn’t plate single run.

    • Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on July 18, 2025 at 5:44 pm

    • James's avatar James said, on July 18, 2025 at 6:03 pm
