A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

My Patience Has Run Out With JV

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 19, 2025

In light of that horrendous, awful game where literally everything bad that could happen, happened I bring you an email from Stix to distract you from the misery. Sounds like he’s had a tough time lately but he’s alive and that’s more than you can say for JV’s arm right now…..

Craig:  Been awhile.  Had some medical issues, but kept up on Gigantes.  Tonight’s shutout by Toronto was, well, disenchanting.  Giants actually outhit them by 11-10.  So our HOF probability is currently 0-8.  Chances are, with the Deadline looming, he gets one more start.  He didn’t fool them in the first couple frames…but that third inning…In comes Tristan Beck and he goes 4.1 IP, giving up exactly one hit, gets a couple K’s and walks precisely nobody.  He kinda made up for his first relief stint which went haywire fast.  Seven ground-outs and one fly out is kinda comforting after yet another fiasco from a guy who may get selected for the pen…or maybe could take on a pitching coach role for the rest of the contract.

Something I was expecting was that Scott Alexander got designated and is now a F.A.  With his record, only the dearth of southpaws in the pen got him the call.

So here comes the heartwarmer: Lefty reliever Matt Gage, was initially drafted tenth round by SF in 2014.  He sojourned through the pipeline for a few years and then got picked up by other organizations and even did a season in the Mexican league.  Gigantes picked him up again and at age 32, maybe, maybe.  He pitched a reasonably clean inning, following Beck.  His 3 team pipeline stint added to a 1.43 ERA over 37.2 IP, gave up a couple dingers over the span, accumulating a pair of walks v.15 k.’s. A WHIP of 0.93 was the frosting on the cake.

SacTown has a couple of possible sooner than later possibilities.  One is the Taiwanese Kai-Wei Teng, who was scuffling in the pipeline for a few years and then appeared to find himself as a starter and pretty good strikeout artist this go-gound.  He’s given up all of three taters, along with a 3.78 ERA, sporting a tightwad 18 BBs against 82 K’s.  Maybe he has learned to pitch, perhaps well enough to be a #5 starter in an MLB rotation.

So far as I know, Teng is not on the 40-man…and so is the second intriguing prospect, Grant MCcrea, a speedster outfielder.  His production level has included 61 runs scored along with 59 Rib-Eyes, for 120 runs produced on 99 hits.  With 34XBH’s are 16 doubles, five triples and 13 homers.  His only downer is 44walks against 115 strikeouts.  His BA is a reasonable .269, an OBP of a decent .343, an SP of 446 for an OPS of a comfy 789.  Icing on the cake are 26 stolen bases as against getting thrown out exactly twice.  Logically, he would replace Matos, who does get the occasional tater, but outside from that…not much.

Here’s one for the real stats freaks:  BBIP.  Giants record on those drives to the outfield which get caught, particularly the liners, has got to be right near the unluckiest in MLB.  It happened again tonight.  Yes, there were the usual strikeouts and a dp or two, but the proportion of batted balls which discovered leather seems to have been a pattern this season.

Wilmer must be stewing right about now.  Not so long ago he had for a day or two the highest number of RBI’s in MLB.  Now, he’s mostly butt on pine.  Not likely a happy camper. Could be that he, Encarnacion and Matos may be on the trade list. Some team, close, but not quite there might caugh up a nice deal for our erstwhile Rib-Eye griller.

Hoping all the guys are still on board at the Flap.  Been a wild and strange season for me these past few months.  On penultimate day of November, an extremely cold and windy one, the old homestead house burned down.  Then to add some black pepper, there was a heart attack on Easter weekend.  Double bypass surgery.  Still in recovery mode, but energy levels not quite up to par.

 GO GIANTS!  -Stix

Here’s hope for a speedy recovery stix. Sorry to here about your house, hope you had some insurance. getting old is better than the alternative but it still sucks at times. The Giants are pretty much a total mess right now. And I don’t see an end is sight anytime soon.

yeah hope he feels better. Great he stills follows team closely and checks in here despite all that’s happened to him.

McCray is putting up decent numbers after a rough start, but the one that sticks out is all the Ks. this has been what he’s done at all levels (including with Giants last year), and it’s just hard to see that changing vs. ML pitching.

Thank Flav, always good to have news from Stix. Sorry to hear of his ordeals but happy to know he is still with us.

fwiw .. last year G’s were shut out 8 times. 3 of those 8 came in consecutive games (MIL, SD & SD), mid-Sept. This year, with still more than two months to play, G’s have been shut out 10 times.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 19, 2025 at 8:45 am

I think at time Texas fired hitting coach D Ecker they had been shut out 10 times as well.

In Athletic was column about there being more CFs available than corner OFs, including Harrison Bader who is putting up .760 OPS with 11 HRs as RH for Twins team under .500. I could see Bader as backup/platoon option for both Lee and Yaz in CF or RF vs. LHP.

In first race at Ellis Park in Kentucky today is horse #8 Montalbano. Inspector Montalbano was character in Andrea Camillieri wonderful series of mysteries set in rural Sicily. the books were made into long running TV series in Italy.

I’ve always wanted to see Sicily. I spent a lot of time in Italy but have never been south of Rome.

Was very fortunate to spend first semester junior year of college studying in Rome. Highly recommend two journeys in southern Italy: (1) Amalfi coastline south of Naples. Sorrento, Pompeii, islands of Ischia & Capri. (2) Sicily. Rent car and travel among Palermo, Agrigento, Siracusa & Taormina.

Yankee fans liked Bader when he was here. I think he had a good PS for them once…

You’re right Loo–2022 Bader was 10-30 with 5 bombs vs. Guards and Stros (who wiped Yanks out 4-0 in ALCS).

Interesting what Stix pointed out with G’s BBIP. In April and early May, dinks, doinks and dribblers seemed to be all rolling & tumbling in the G’s favor. By June that luck had pretty much evaporated and we’ve not seen much of it since.

Best for you Stix in your recovery from your health issues like Winder said better then the alternative for sure..

Well I still don’t see any reason why the Giants are keeping Pat Burrell?he was terrible last year and even worst this year as are hitting coach .Yeah the players need to be accountable as well but he doesn’t breed in confidence and the players don’t listen to him anyway just hacking at shit, no Discipline patience at all! How many times have they been shutout also?

Oh thanks Baldy must of skipped over that post..

So shutout 10 times in 98 games that is terrible 😞

Id rather bring in Chili Davis over Pat Burrell anytime! Chili has a good reputation,And when he was the hitting coach for the Mets( puzzling firing imo) the players like Alonso and the rest loved him with his hitting approach unlike Clueless Burrell ..And former Giants JD Davis who first met Chili with he played with the Mets, swears that Chili is his Dog helping turn his hitting around,

The record for most times being shut out in an MLB season is 24, achieved by the Cleveland Indians in 1914.

      • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on July 19, 2025 at 10:51 am

Sadly, seems we are well on our way to challenging that record. At least we have a shot at sumthin’

I really liked JD Davis and hoped he could put it all together with G’s. Loved your “Chilli is his Dog” Kat! Yet, it seems whatever he gleaned from Chilli didn’t stick much.

The chronic problems and predictable flops permeate the commentary. A team headed down to .500 is like that.

Looking at the batting splits, there’s now data for the first and second “half.” I was amused that the Giants actually have a lower second half team OPS. That’s what 10 singles, no walks, and only 1 XBH, a double, will do.

Of course a DP by Flores to end after Melvin begging on a reversal as the umpires kind of looked but thinking screw this it’s the Giants a struggling team in Canada let’s go get a cold one boys..

Here’s one to dwell on..Both are Starters Verlander&Webb gave up 20 hits! V man 9 hits in 2 2/3 innings Webb 11 hits in 6 innings! Yeah I know Toronto has a great team and league leading hitting, but are the Giants tipping off pitches as well?

I’m so sick of how they can never string hits, rest of the season going to be one guy gets hit, the rest not??

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on July 19, 2025 at 2:45 pm

geez Kat, the tipping pitches question entered my mind yesterday concerning Verlander.

don’t get me wrong, I love me some G’s homers and happy to see Adames coming around. Although, as James would point out, he still has a ways to go. But these occasional solo shots vs pretty much nothin with men on base, is very frustrating.

Recently rewatched highlights from 2010 WS. Kind of forgot a) how dominant Timmy was, and b) how terrible Pat the Bat-less was. He’d had a decent season, if I remember correctly, but man, was he done in all caps by the end there. Actually painful to watch all his Ks in that series. Obviously there’s no direct correlation, but if Buster wanted any convincing that Burrell might not be a good hitting coach, he should go watch those Ks again. Half joking.
