A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Free Falling

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 22, 2025

Kruk was on KNBR yesterday morning saying all of Birdsong’s problems were mechanical (shocker) and that we’d know in the first inning if he’d figured them out or not over the break.

0.0 innings completed.

I guess we got our answer.

Well, at least Elder only struck out one, he struck us out 12 times back in May.

Progress?

Man in headlights is Posey. With exception of Birdsong who I think bought bus ticket back to Sacramento last night, I think Posey will be patient another week and see where Giants are after upcoming homestand. That also means two more starts for Verlander.

But if free fall continues, Posey must take action before Giants head to New York Aug 1st. The easier internal steps include firing Pat the Bat. Reassigning Matt Williams. Demoting Verlander to bullpen. Benching Ramos for at least a series to send message about lack of hustle and defensive discipline. These moves are about sending a message to clubhouse.

But if Posey wants to improve team he must take more drastic measures including trading any marginally marketable players and getting something in return. Doval, Walker, Yaz, Flores come to mind. Problem with this is its admission this season is over and ownership may not accept this approach.

Once promoted out of pen Birds gave up 0 HRs in 19 innings. Since then, 6 in 23. Looked last night like he was afraid to throw strike, missing low with fastball. Then of course left one in happy zone…same problem as Harrison. His start before Miami game vs. Boston didn’t go well so the HBP he delivered wasn’t issue to me and that needed to happen after Chapman Schmitt and Ramos had been hit. He doesn’t have command of anything vs. real hitters.

    • James's avatar James said, on July 22, 2025 at 8:05 am

The one positive: his fastball velocity was back to 97-98. The break seemed to fix that, at least for one miserable start.

Per Adames’ comments about lack of energy, MoTel 6 isn’t getting his guys ready.

Buster can’t sit around and wait for things to change.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 22, 2025 at 8:13 am

per MCC site there was “…an unusually long wait between final out and Bob Melvin’s media availability…”. so either someone was being dumped or he let them have it. Good for Adames, he and other vet leaders like Chapman and Flores need to let everyone know it’s unacceptable to play D like this behind pitching staff.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 22, 2025 at 8:17 am

Day before MCC had Sac updates from weekend return to action: Eldridge is back, 1-9. So is Jerar 2-9. Fitz 0-12 with 3 Ks, McCray 1-12 with 7 Ks.

Whis went 3.2 innings, 68 pitches 5 hits 0 BBs 4 Ks 1 run vs. Dogs OKC AAA team. If you ditch Birds he or Seymour sound like next man up, barring trade for SP.

Roupp is about to surpass his past seasons’ IP max. I don’t expect his whip to shrink much. It’ll hang around that dreaded 1.500 mark, where Verlander and birdsong sit. The pen is deteriorating. The LU is weak. No wonder the team’s depressed. No wonder we are.

on field leaders like Chapman and Webb and, despite his goofy Walmart greeter vest, Adames, can only do so much. Second guessing, and blaming, the manager and the coaches is usually just an amusing, half-informed hobby. This debacle is different. How can you not blame them now?

Ramos is the worst Left Fielder in Baseball ( no surprise) among all 30 Leftfielders in baseball at -08 now with 5 errors should be more really, he constantly takes bad routes to balls off the hitters batting, and that stupid ass lob throw over Adames head advancing another 2 runners were the icing on the cake how Lackadaisical he is(Doval=Ramos as well for sure) but the Giants have no choice with him cause he’s still one of their best hitters in a team that can’t hit ever with any consistency..

They have to go out and get a SP atleast a quality 3-4-5 guy like a Merrill Kelly ,Seth Lugo, Gallen,

You know their going to probably give Beck a shot now to start and don’t be fooled by his recent few games he still stinks like Mason Black and Mr.HR allowed guy Seymour.Wish still needs time with his control like Birds so they will stay at Sac together..

And no way can you can put Verlander in the pen, it would take him 2 innings just to warm up and he’s always been a Starter every 5th day( pride factor)so expecting him to throw every other game are so is unrealistic. They just need to cut bait with him and move on..

So sick of Melvin usual BS about Fundamentals costing the team then try’s and to throw Schmitt under the bus on Lee’s one hop over throw to Adames that was out of the reach over Schmitt,as Acuna scores from 1st fucking base! The outfield play was the WORST I HAVE EVER SEEN, no hustle, no communication! Richie said it best postgame:Lack of focus, not anticipating a play situation, just unforgiving lack of focus especially in the Outfield is unacceptable..

If Posey can cut ties with Wade over his loyalty past he can do the same with these chumps..

Isn’t it ironic that we can all get something done around your place, take a piss, cook dinner, make a drink, etc and then turn on the game and knowing that can’t score are get a hit for atleast 4 innings in general and already hit in killer DP while watching their pitchers mostly pitch their asses off with no help from the LU and god forgive a sloppy defense and any starter is cooked..

In closed doors Melvin should be calling out names for shit play. Birdsong is only 23 yrs old, I give him a pass, but the defense in the out field is atrocious to say the least. The other thing is no situational hitting. I think there was someone on 2nd and Yas was up. The announcers said the 3rd basement was almost in the shortstop position and deep. Why didn’t Yas just lay down a bunt, and a hard bunt to get it past the pitcher. Man on 1sr and 3rd.

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 22, 2025 at 1:12 pm

There are so many things wrong.

They NEVER try to move runners. They’ve pretty much given up on stealing. They don’t know when or how to tag up. They rarely protect the plate on a 2 strike count. Or choke up and just try to put the ball in play.

Defense is lackadaisical to hysterical. Scoring from 1st on a grounder up the middle? Ramos stopping to smell the flowers and lollypop the throw into the IF. Throwing to the wrong base. Missing the cutoff man. Lee giving up on a ball that nearly hit his foot. He’s made a few misplays lately. On and on. This team is worse than last year.

This is a systemic thing going down through all the minor league levels where guys come up clueless. Fitzgerald being one of the very obvious head-in-the-clouds guys. But ALL of them that come up appear to be over their heads.

And WTF is up with Lee? A hitting coach HAS to tell him to eithert lay off the down and away pitch or try to hit it to LF instead of rolling them over to 2nd. Yazzzzzzzzz is lost at the plate. Chappie is just fair to poor. .220 is the norm. Flores is down to zero output. Ramos is struggling wildly.

We are a team under the mendoza line. Adames is the only one barely hitting near decent.

I guess it’s time to dump the Giants cliche (hello Eldridge) that 1B is a position that is far harder to play than it looks. Devers has never played 1B, so a crash course in footwork and holding runners and short hop picking is good enough for him to start there in the major leagues? What is Eldridge supposed to think at AAA? The dude making $250 million over 8 years is taking over my future spot? Plus, Devers is clearly hurt. He can barely run the bases, he looks like his entire lower body is one big pulled muscle. The Michelin Man rounding third. How many batters, how many games at 1B, before he makes his first error over there? First really costly error? The batted and thrown baseball has a way of finding you at the most inopportune time…

Just watched the replay of the chew out and Ramos never made eye contact with martinez either.

    too funny.

just have to wonder how this carries forward. They did things right and they won. Got walks, played defense, hit the ball.

    tomorrow?

9-0 is also the score given if the game is a forfeit, so Atlanta didn’t do any better than if they had not shown up at all, which I find kind of humorous.
