A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Under .500 Again

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 3, 2025

Ok, so maybe it’s not Doval’s fault….

He still sucks and I’m glad he’s gone….

But, our bullpen is now in predictable disarray without him or Rogers.

At least it’s an interesting start with The Wiz today. Any of our NY Flap contingent going?

July told us that the Giants weren’t ready for prime time. So, I am not too disappointed about what happened yesterday or what’s going to happen for the remainder of the season. The decision to trade Rogers, Doval, and Yaz is all about the future . . . Specifically, the Giants potential of striking gold on a prospect or two in the return haul (as NBC Sports pointed out). We wont know that outcome for a couple of seasons, perhaps longer.

Right now this is what I expect from the Giants: 1. Minimizing mental mistakes on the field; 2. Continued development of Bailey, Schmitt, McCray, Matos, Teng, Butto, etc.; and, 3. Chapman, Adames, Devers earning their salaries.

  2. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2025 at 8:19 am

? came up in Athletic: what do Mets broadcasters think of Schmitt at 2b?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2025 at 8:27 am

seems like going to his backhand is weaker side. I thought he has been OK going to his left and cutting off balls hit that way closer to 1b. Unfortunate Dom made a mistake yesterday, he’s been solid over there.

Rag on Giants minors all you want, but right now 3 starting position players Bailey Schmitt and Ramos all came from there along with most of pitching. Before trades Giants had one of ML best pens and most of them again went through Giants system. This is real goal of minors, not winning AA League but developing few players on those teams that can eventually help big club. Have a feeling without looking it up quite a few present day Giants played at Richmond in some part of their early years

Schmitt’s deficiency as a utility IF learning positions on the fly is just about the least of the team’s problems.

I love the fact that Posey does not sit on his hands like Zaidi did, insofar as pulling the trigger on mid-season trades. Giants were 54-56 at the end of July last season and the Giants still held on to players who were set to be free agents like Blake Snell and Michael Conforto.

Zaidi did the same thing in 2022 when the Giants were .500 at the trade deadline and could have traded Rodón, whom they almost certainly knew would not be coming back the next season. Instead, we got zero return.

Lastly, interesting column in Around The Foghorn about the possibility of Bochy, Baker or Hallberg (1st base coach and good friend of Buster’s) replacing Melvin as manager. I posted previously about Buster’s extension of Melvin being nothing more than a vote of confidence during the Giants subpar play in early July, as he could be fired early next season. I digress though . . . Hallberg is an interesting choice, but I know so little about him. Regarding Bochy or Baker, I would choose the former. Anyway, here’s the link:

    https://aroundthefoghorn.com/3-candidates-to-replace-bob-melvin-if-sf-giants-decide-to-fire-him

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2025 at 10:31 am

Rangers are right back in WC race behind M’s. Highly doubt they let Bochy walk or that he’d leave them to come back to Giants.

fwiw Eldridge hit 2 bombs last night, one of which was 425 oppo shot. Gilbert had triple, Birds got bombed from what I read. But, this was in Albuquerque on near 80 degree night and stadium is at 5000 feet.

Agree Willie. Also, the reasons that AK gave are relevant. After posting this, I checked the articles cited about Hallberg’s experience, along with his Posey friendship and I am very much impressed with his resume, which includes managerial experience at the minor league level, along with being interviewed for the Giants manager position that Melvin ultimately got.

Only # 3 has likelihood of success though more likely next year when Devers & Adames acclimatize to Bay Area & Oracle Park. Chapman is standout 3B but .250-.260 BA most we can likely expect at plate.

Perhaps one or two guys emerge as solid MLB contributor from # 2 group though Bailey’s very low .200 BA neutralizes his play behind plate. Schmitt maybe best hope from this class.

As for # 1, we’ve seen absolutely no sign of improved defensive play or baserunning. In fact, I’d argue it’s gotten worse. Baseball IQ of current roster is sorely lacking

  7. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 3, 2025 at 9:47 am

My choice before the “Play it safe approach “ that I’m sure Posey being the the new sheriff in town and learning on the fly so he went Melvin unfortunately.I really wanted them to start fresh with a younger manager and that was Steven Vogt who really has the players respect not being out of the league to long as well, so modern day players relate easier too.

Yeah Bochy&Dusty HOF managers for sure( especially Boch a lock) but to comeback here a second time would probably tarnish their managerial records..

Side note unrelated to the Giants. Dealing with my stepdad’s estate as the executor . . . He had a trust (which avoided probate) and it is well written, where inheritances are quite clear and without issues. However, it has been a nightmare with me more or less “playing detective” and trying to figure out what bills have to be paid, accounts closed, etc. Almost like putting a puzzle together.

So do this for your children and other heirs: Make sure you have a written trust. Limit your financial institutions – if possible, one banking account; or, at most, one banking account and one equity/stock market account.

Most importantly, have NO MORE THAN ONE CREDIT CARD AND DEBIT CARD. This last issue has made settling my stepdad’s estate very difficult, as he had approx. a dozen credit and debit cards. Related to the aforementioned – delete all old emails and have “folders” for your email account, e.g., Bills, Health Care, Mortgage, Utilities, Credit Card(s), etc.

Right now, we may get back to our WA home by August 18th, a few days before my daughter starts 3rd grade.

    Well, well.

Look what happens when you actually pressure the defense and pitcher by stealing a bag (going to third on the bad throw), constantly taking long counts and forcing the pitcher to throw hittable balls instead of swinging at crap, actually making contact after contact and forcing the defense to make (or not make) plays, beating out infield hits with hustle, and fluster the pitcher with the above so that your big guy can crush one out. Amazing…

    • James's avatar James said, on August 3, 2025 at 12:09 pm

Of course from the Mets’ perspective, on consecutive days two veteran first basemen who came up through their minor league organization made similarly poor decisions that cost their teams.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 3, 2025 at 12:27 pm

On replay, Schmitt declined to try to field the crappy short-hop throw from McCray for fear of botching the pickup, knowing that Adames was backing him up — so then Adames completely biffs picking up the rolling ball right to him, and the runner jogs in to score a gimmee. Unreal…

Adames let that throw from McCray go by. It looked like an easy short hop. There wasn’t going to be any play at second. He was also the secondary culprit yesterday on the Dom Smith play, not Schmitt.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 3, 2025 at 1:06 pm

Not that it matters, but look at the replay.

Schmitt got out of the way of the McCray’s crap throw because it was going to eat him alive. Adames, backing up Schmitt didn’t bend down enough to get the second hop, he non-chalanted it and ball went under this glove. I give Schmitt credit for not attempting a high risk pickup of the crap throw from McCray, counting on his teammate Adames to do his backup job. Adames didn’t.

It’s mostly on McCray, he double clutched before throwing to the cutoff, which probably helped him unleash a panic throw. Why he double clutched, IDK. You pick up the ball on the wall carom (he did nicely), then locate the nearest cutoff guy (Schmitt) and fire it to him on the fly. That’s just OF play 1A …

    No disrespect to Sandberg.

But, Kent should be in the HOF along with Sandberg.

Kent’s offensive stats are mostly better than Sandberg’s. Kent has over 450 more RBIs. Kent with 2461 career hits to 2386.

Kent easily wins the career OPS at .855 to .795. His HR wins again by a mile at 377 to 282. Somehow, Sandberg takes WAR 68 to 56. Kent was an MVP, Sandberg was not.

If Kent had played for the Cubs, he’d be in the Hall for sure.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 3, 2025 at 2:03 pm

Hey I loved Ryno Sandberg so for sure respect ( always tried to get him in my old baseball fantasy day are Roberto Alomar , way before the Kent days who would of been fantastic in fantasy) anyway Kent is the ALLTIME leader in HR’s among all 2nd basemen and his RBI’s every year was stellar! Like he said himself which is one of my favorite quotes of alltime in baseball,

Come Contract negotiations nightmare for players, He said :The Money Lies with the RBI’s”

There is no legitimate reason he’s not in the HOF except for bias voters who just don’t like his attitude and I’m sure pissed many off like Bonds, but that’s another story with the steroids which Kent was never accused of btw, so as usual the HOF is just a joke now…

Thanks Loo, interesting. the gold gloves and d in general are thing that likely turn tide for Sandberg. Kent’s peak years with Giants 1998-2002 (that this peak only lasted so long was another knock I heard on him) generated less WAR than Sandberg over long haul, again primarily due to D I’d guess. I’d sure put Kent in there, and I do think his personality was turn off to voting writers and media people.
