A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Finally, We Slay Our White Whale

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 6, 2025

Everyone got a hit in the line up. When was the last time that’s happened? How do you even look that up? I’d love to know the answer.

I know this is crazy to say but I am not giving up on the season. When you have 2 aces (Webby and Ray-ey) and a HOF #3 is has been pitching like a legit #3 lately you really aren’t ever done.

They need to figure out the pen to have any chance. Seymour Perdidas isn’t cutting it.

Would be nice to get Birdy back in some type of form so he could take a role in the BP

Read somewhere Giants were this far back of 2010 WC (only 1 then) late August. Miller and Roupp about to throw rehabs this week or next. Think chuck is right about sorting pen out and yes maybe Birds could help there as well.

2010 still memorable because I was in NYC September during late season run for mgmt. conference and had great time. Stayed up late in hotel at bar etc. to watch SF catching Padres.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 6, 2025 at 8:36 am

compare 2010 SP and pen. Different time though. The sudden surge of the bench with a few more young guys raking at sac makes this team great to watch right now. Who knows what can happen? If things somehow join propitiously down the stretch ala 2010, it’d be a miracle and it’d be fun. But….

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 6, 2025 at 8:47 am

oh yeah this is definitely long shot. Given strength of NL East and Central teams at top of Divisions, likely only 1 WC spot available.

Wilson drove me crazy; hopefully R Rod can get sorted and get his share of saves. Different times with 3 batter rule, pitch clock, throws to 1b et al.

Rest of the Giants need to pay attention to Smith when he hits with men on. He doesn’t swing for the fences. Shocking he is not a Giants farmhand with bad habits — he was trained in the Yankee system. Schmitt and Chapman really need to pay attention to his approach. Not too late for Schmitt, probably is for Chapman…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 6, 2025 at 12:23 pm

Agree . . . I commented on this a few days ago – he “stays within himself.” Doesn’t try to go for the fences on every pitch. Reminiscent of 60s, 70s, 80s, early 90s ball player imo.

  32. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 6, 2025 at 12:40 pm

With Devers apparently learning to play 1B a “thing”, and Smith very capable there, and Wilmer certainly gone next season — whither Eldridge? He’s learning 1B at Sac and has virtually no history at any other position except pitcher.

Are they really going to put their #1 farmhand, a 21 year old — next year in a permanent DH position? Are they setting him up for failure to find a position like they’ve done with Luciano ?

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 6, 2025 at 12:49 pm

No idea what happens at 1st base next season, but I am certain Posey loves the fact that despite the “traffic jam” at first with Devers, Smith, Eldridge, and ??? – he has a lot of options: including, perhaps a trade of one or more of these guys. Me? I would like to see a trade, where we can get a left fielder and insert Ramos as DH or use him as a trade chip. I really appreciate his hitting, but he sucks as a left fielder. Anyway, Posey has a lot of potential options with all of these guys.

      • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on August 6, 2025 at 1:11 pm

Maybe Eldridge needs to dust off his OF mitt.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 6, 2025 at 1:58 pm

Eldridge played some OF coming up.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 6, 2025 at 3:00 pm

26 games in RF for single A San Jose. They moved him out of that spot real quick.

  33. xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 6, 2025 at 1:19 pm

Eldridge is another very big guy who keeps getting hurt. He recently made it back into the sac LU and immediately began mashing HRs again. He might be born to play DH.

  34. xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 6, 2025 at 1:23 pm

the Kent Sandberg comparisons that popped up last week highlighted the importance of good career D. That’s what explains the difference in WAR between them. (I still think Kent’s a hofer, though.). Dom plays an excellent 1B. And he can hit a lick. Devers will never have such range and grace in the field. Nor I bet you will Eldridge.

  35. James's avatar James said, on August 6, 2025 at 1:30 pm

Dom came up in the Mets system. So did Alonso, Nimmo, and Viento, big K hitters who presumably don’t possess a noteworthy “two-strike approach.”

  36. James's avatar James said, on August 6, 2025 at 1:38 pm

Dom Smith’s lifetime batting averages with two strikes:

    0-2: .143
    1-2: .139
    2-2: .188
    3-2: .200

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 6, 2025 at 1:57 pm

Right this is his best season since juiced ball era 2019-20. He hasn’t had OPS above .706 since…as 1b/OF without much power.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 6, 2025 at 2:05 pm

I hope he keeps going, he can be our new Wilmer. But there is absolutely nothing special about his “two-strike approach.”

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 6, 2025 at 2:54 pm

        ha. Compared to whom ??

      • James's avatar James said, on August 6, 2025 at 8:00 pm

Take your pick! The MLB BA w/ 2 strikes is 170 this year, a little better than Dom’s lifetime number. Presumably those cumulative MLB stats don’t vary too much from year to year.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 6, 2025 at 8:39 pm

I instinctively had visions of Matos over swinging at strike three. Sure enough. .098.

  37. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 6, 2025 at 3:28 pm

When you factor in his D, DOM is our best first baseman. I wouldn’t count on him next year but if you did, what about Devers back to 3rd, Eldy at DH and move Chappy to SS or 2nd base and let Adames play whichever spot Chappy doesn’t take. I know that’s a lot of moving around but that might give us our most productive LU and best defense

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 7, 2025 at 5:23 am

As I have stated all along, agree with what you said above . . . James’s take is “wet” until it isn’t. Right now, Dom is playing outstanding baseball for the Giants, both offensively and defensively. I could give 2 shits what he did previously.

  38. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 6, 2025 at 4:00 pm

I just don’t see the Giants ever moving a perennial GG 3rd baseman in Chapman.Same goes with chatting clown Adames at SS they both are playing their natural positions throughout their careers and seem to be bonding well together ( communication wise) .The left side of the infield is set for years..

Devers would be terrible at 3rd with little range, and forget any bunt play, it’s not happening like Chapman can still pull off.Devers at 1st not ideal, but still better then 3rd.So yeah a dilemma for next year cause Eldridge needs a ton of work at 1st like Devers also, and both LH DH isn’t great either but no way Eldridge will be playing OF at 6’8 risking more of a chance for injuries,he’s only a 1B/DH like Devers imo..

  39. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 6, 2025 at 4:34 pm

    I’d trade Eldridge. We don’t develop hitters…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 6, 2025 at 5:57 pm

No problem with that if they can get a haul for him. IMO, 6’7″ baseball players are not the best bets for long term success…

Devers is finally starting to hit. A little. Still swinging for the fences every swing… Watch Dom!!
