A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

I Finally Figured It Out

If Verlander pitches well we lose. If he pitches poorly we lose. Only a fool would keep running this loser out there at this point.

Does it make any sense to go to a 6 man rotation to look at some kids and save some wear on Webb and Ray?

“I’m frustrated that our fans come out and support us every night and we gave them literally nothing today.” Melvin in Baggs column about that being one of worse games of season which sums it up.

Baggs harped on how bad Nats have been, how poorly Giants have hit at home all year (team OPS .713 and most hitters worse than that), poor OF play/lack of RH options there beyond Matos and Luciano, etc. V said he was trying to pitch to contact with 2 strikes and fewer Ks in effort to last longer which obviously didn’t work way he wanted to. He said, “stuff is fine.”

Didn’t see any of it thankfully but followed along online for a bit and gave up. Horse racing at Del Mar more exciting. Hopefully Better luck for James and Padres-at least Giants seem to compete better vs. better teams.

Paint drying at Del Mar is more exciting than this team.

great line from the Baggs piece:

“Although Gilbert is still looking for his first big-league hit (0 for 10, 4 strikeouts), at least he got a lot of practice playing balls off the bricks in right field.”

Somehow you made me think of this JFK quip in response to criticism for naming RFK his Attorney General:

“I can’t see that it’s wrong to give him a little legal experience before he goes out to practice law.”

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 11, 2025 at 9:45 am

old lawyer I worked with early on, Harvard Stanford guy, bragged to me over lunch one day that he was the player who broke RFK’s leg at football practice.

I like schmitt at 2b but bat is 14-66 and 2-18. Having better August (.757 OPS) than July (.510). May it continue.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 11, 2025 at 7:37 am

he and Koss have played 2B about as much, with similar DP numbers (11, 12, something like that). I don’t yet have an op on who turns it better. Schmitt s arm can’t be beat, but Koss plays 2B pretty well. I thought starting Koss behind Webb last week might be a Melvinian signal. Maybe not.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 11, 2025 at 8:10 am

Why would Turdlander ‘pitch to contact’ with 2 strikes?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 11, 2025 at 11:20 am

He said, “I’m trying to get deeper in the game. I don’t want to pitch to keep pitching to get swing and miss or strikeouts.” He said he was trying to keep guys off balance and from making solid contact on barrel. His words, not mine, in Baggs column.

Stumbling toward .500. A solid effort Fri, wasted opportunity Sat and utter wasteland Sun.

Did quick math which means I’m probably wrong but think Giants 9-13 record at ORACLE vs teams BELOW .500. Got swept by Marlins & Pirates and lost 2 of 3 to Nats.

2025 Giants continue to surprise and disappoint simultaneously. Model of inconsistency. Only reason Giants still wild card contender is ineptitude of Mets – losers of 11 of past 12 games.

If this pattern continues and Giants miss playoffs (likely scenario), Posey faces tough decision on Melvin and changes to coaching staff while needing to continue roster overhaul in RF, 2B, 1B (Eldridge ?) and additions to starting rotation.

ML contracts are weighted to team control in early going. R Rod, AS and current closer, makes $740K. Absolute steal for club and he isn’t arb eligible for 2 more years.

Suarez, Pads closer, is in final year (#3) of $30 mil deal. Set up guy J Adam makes $4.8 million.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 11, 2025 at 8:47 am

Like I said, this is SO much like the Niner season where the absolute ineptitude of the DC and special teams coaches was readily apparent by week 4.

But no, they stick with the shit and end up sucking hard.

Not that firing Burrell and Williams is as important as Sorensen and Schneider were, but the fact remains that not doing anything is just passing the buck, giving up on this season, and jettisoning them at the end of the year.

Unca– how worried about our O-line are you? I feel like we are an injury away from it being awful.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 11, 2025 at 12:04 pm

They actually showed out OK yesterday. That was encouraging as Devers was playing their defenisve starters for the first few series. That being said, Burford at LT was a disaster. Hope it never comes to that.

This team is woefully thin in as lot of areas, esp O line, and looking at yesterday, getting past the 2s is an issue, but that’s true for everyone.

If the O line stays healthy, mainly Trent Williams, we should be OK. McKivitz still worries me, but the hope is that Bartch stay on the field. He’s great when he isn’t hurt. Brendel at C? Bartch has to play well . . . Puni is a bona fide stud.

Lotta fucking ifs there but what do you do? I wish they drafted more line help, but I’ve been saying that for 5 years now. Hennessey as the backup center looked good. The whole point being, if the interior line plays well, then the tackles can focus on their job. The run blocking was decent the first few series, and we were playing mostly backups.

Interested in watching Hennessey as the backup center. He may win the job if he keeps playing like he did.

BFs lede is exactly right and echoes what I posted yesterday after the Verlander scheise show of 11 hits in under 4 full innings. Giants essentially give away a loss when they throw him out There to start, regardless of how the loss happens. I guess it’s the money, that’s the only thing I can think of keeping him in the rotation. If that is it, this organization can’t be believed when Buster or Melvin or whomever says they want to win and still have playoff designs.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 11, 2025 at 6:03 pm

Maybe after the 6th, with Webb giving up two doubles and a walk for a run scored, and 90 pitches in, Melvin might have just said thanks to Webb for a nice performance, and brought somebody in to start fresh the 7th.
