inspirational! Fiery leaders are overrated. Let’s aim for achievable goals. Let’s set a record for most mlb home losses in a two month stretch. We can do that. Hell, maybe we can get swept in San Diego next week, too!

Apparently Melvin was sick from school day teacher recited Teddy Roosevelt’s inspirational quotes.

But there is a point of no return. This team is spiritless, sloppy and devoid of energy or intelligent baseball IQ on a consistent night-in, night-out basis. You don’t play .500 baseball let alone reach playoffs when you “mail it in” couple games each week.

Whose ultimately responsible? The players and front office which constructed roster. But does manager escape blame? Absolutely not. Melvin appears to be decent, player oriented manager but for whatever reason clubhouse has tuned out him and handful of head scratching coaches.

I don’t believe Posey will act in-season. It’s not his style. But barring a 1951 type mid-August to end-of-September finish Posey must act decisively within 48 hours of end of season and jettison Melvin and most if not entire coaching staff.

Will this pave the way for success in 2026? No. Posey & Minasian must continue to overhaul everyday lineup, replenish starting pitching and strengthen bullpen. This team has too many weak links. But the dismissals of Melvin and coaches will send signal Posey means business and that he won’t countenance continued inept play.

i don’t think he’ll get fired mid season either. It was totally fucked up the way that pussy Zaidi fired Kap with 3 games to go.

Look, I admit it, I was someone who got romantic about Posey re-creating the Hum baby attitude that I thought we missed. But that shit is in the past man. That was the 80’s. Baseball isn’t played that way anymore.

Maybe Melvin’s ghost-like presence works in certain situations. It simply does not work when you’re getting wiped out night after night.

  4. Dean's avatar Dean said, on August 16, 2025 at 7:36 am

Good news is that Posey’s not reticent to take forceful action. Last September he stepped into Chapman negotiations and closed deal while Zaidi watched. Whether 6-year contract extension was smart baseball decision is another question altogether.

Posey also clearly had direct discussions with senior management in Aug/Sept of ‘25 and made clear he was ready to become President of Baseball Operations while Zaidi was left twisting in wind pondering his fate.

He needs to take forceful action yet again as soon as Oracle dims its lights on another lost season.

  5. Dean's avatar Dean said, on August 16, 2025 at 7:40 am

Then again Mets keep floundering and Reds and Cards look beatable so could there be one more run in Giants in ‘25? After I have some caffeine I’ll return to reality.

  6. xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 16, 2025 at 7:41 am

managers sometimes quit mid season. Ron Washington and Ryne Sandberg did. Just admit it’s fucked up and will only get worse if you don’t. But that probably won’t happen here.

Melvin is living proof that brain failure doesn’t lead to death. Trying to like this boring ass, moron, is like trying to slam a revolving door . . . However, he’s not the problem (only a symptom).

Our problem is the roster. The entire roster. How many fucking times have we seen the 8th inning “Deja Vu” situation or a similar version of it, as we did last night? Let’s recap for those whom have forgotten – bases loaded, no outs . . . and NO RUNS. Holy shit! This seems to happen at least weekly, if not more frequently.

Again – Melvin is the symptom . . . Our players are the “disease.”

we’ve got a 200 million dollar payroll— a payroll mostly put together by Posey. Where does he fall on your list of culprits?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 16, 2025 at 8:36 am

Flav, I still like Posey a lot. He’s responsible for building the roster – giving Melvin the players to have a decent shot at winning games. He hasn’t shirked that responsibility. Unfortunately, many of the players whom have joined the roster, haven’t performed as well as anticipated. I am fairly confident that he will fine tune the roster next season.

Posey’s other major responsibility is ensuring that the team has a competent manager. I have no doubt Buster will get rid of Melvin before next season starts. It could happen this season, once Buster realizes that the post season is a pipe dream.

What Melvin just said was stupid and indicative of the problem and is definitely a fireable offense. Dude has given up. Posey can’t allow that. “After the season” is still a month and a half away. I’ll be surprised if Melvin isn’t gone within 24 hours.

  13. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 16, 2025 at 9:52 am

After the Giants predictably blew this season’s umpteenth bases loaded no outs opportunity last night in the bottom 8th, I quit on the game, figuring I’d seen this crap before and they’d find a way to lose the game. Of course they did. What are they now at home, 7 and 20 over the last 27? Doesn’t really matter anymore, the stench has been set of losing in every way imaginable and apparent acceptance of laughably bad, idiotic, brain dead play. Slusser said the other day on KNBR that the vibe in the clubhouse was, quote, “bad”, meaning defeatist as I understood her. Nobody seems to want to change any approaches to get a win, to shake things up, change the vibe. Try some steals, a double steal, a hit and run. Phuck the stats and try a bunt with the bases loaded with no outs or one out. Everybody try to go oppo field at every AB. Something. Anything. Anything but the losing SOS. Objectively, this is the worst performing team in the league since the AS break, maybe since the Devers trade. A laughingstock. Now this — Melvin says something in public so stupid, so white flag, regardless whether he actually meant it (seemed like it) or it came out wrong, that it just adds a weirdly appropriate coup de gras to this death spiral…

  14. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on August 16, 2025 at 10:11 am

I heard Melvin say that Live in the post-game presser. I couldn’t believe what I’d heard and wound it back to be sure. Wow, what a stunner!

I turned it off after the 8th too. The only good news for me is now I expect them to not score. Helps me keep my blood pressure down:)

Tough to figure out exactly but all season they have failed with bases loaded and no outs. Lowest BA in those situations in history? Has to be close. Inability to even get a sac fly is unreal. Literally every time we get 2 on I root against a walk. I KNOW they won’t score and I’m almost always right.

  16. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 16, 2025 at 11:38 am

I checked StubHub for the helluvit.

This morning, people are still buying Club Level seats for all-in prices like $134, $118 and quite a few such CL seats still asking well north of $100. For four, when you drop in beers and garlic fries and parking, that’s easily over $600 to see this POS squad play Tampa. Tampa. Maybe they WANT to see Tampa? Maybe mid afternoon the prices dip down well below $100. I don’t know what it will take for people to stop paying a lot of money to see abject failure and going through the motions as just admitted in public by Melvin. Maybe to a lot of folks going to Oracle is just something to do, be outside, see or be seen — regardless of the baseball — Giants win or lose and playing boring ass ball is unimportant. Or, maybe when school starts again shortly, demand will go down. If there are still a good amount of butts in seats buying fries and crab sangies, then I guess there’s little incentive for ownership/management to work, change and get creative to make the team stop being crap…

  17. James's avatar James said, on August 16, 2025 at 12:31 pm

The Giants stats with the bases loaded this year:

    BA: 256

    OPS: 786

They are still tied for 6th in sacrifice flies at 35, two above the league average.

Sadly, in the middle of the most bizarre, disappointing run of games that I can recall, even the petty pleasure of sharing contrarian stats is absent.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on August 16, 2025 at 1:47 pm

      • James's avatar James said, on August 16, 2025 at 2:31 pm

Probably not. When the team has trouble scoring runs at all, the failures in big situations become more acute and painful to watch, making it seem like that’s why the offense is so pitiful. The bland reality is captured in that terrible 683 team OPS.

  19. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 16, 2025 at 3:20 pm

The stat that counts is Giants have lost 14 of their last 15 HOME games. Everything else is details.

That is the worst HOME performance for the Giants in a comparable number of games since 1901. That’s the worst in 125 years. That’s 1 1/4 CENTURIES = Historically Horrible…

  20. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 16, 2025 at 4:05 pm

BB, I frequently use statistics to prove a point. Frequently, I am so convinced of my opinion, that I will manipulate the statistics to make my point. I often forget to remember these 2 quotes:

The most famous quote about the manipulation of numbers is, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” While this phrase is widely attributed to Mark Twain, he himself gave credit to British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. The quote highlights the persuasive power of statistics and how they can be used to support weak or misleading arguments.

Another well-known quote that speaks to the misuse of numbers is “He uses statistics as a drunken man uses a lamppost, for support rather than illumination.” This quote, often attributed to Scottish poet and novelist Andrew Lang, suggests that people often use data to bolster a pre-existing argument, rather than to genuinely seek out the truth.

    Another stat that is meaningful.

Devers was acquired on June 15. Including the game that day, through yesterday, i.e., games #82 through #122, the Giants have lost 33 of their last 50 games. Thats a .340 winning clip — so they’ve effectively lost 2 of every 3 games played since the Devers trade…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 16, 2025 at 5:14 pm

Willie, do you recall using multicolored tape or cloth tape for both aesthetics and functional reasons in the 60s? It was really popular for a few years. Us kids would wrap our bats for a better grip (no one was wearing batting gloves back then). We would also use tape for minor hairline cracks, where we hoped we could get a few more swings out of a favorite bat. Lastly, we would do it for aesthetic decorative purposes too.

also wish the pen was still strong enough to finish off seven excellent SO innings from an old guy who refuses to quit. But….

Does it really matter if Posey feels he’s adding contact hitters for the future? They can’t get hitters now that constantly make contact!

It’s obviously not working at Sac and throughout the system the averages say it all nobody can hit decent , so the coaching throughout the organization has to be overhauled along with the big league club for sure.

    • James's avatar James said, on August 17, 2025 at 10:16 am

Much easier said than done, Kat. Organizational inertia is even stronger when there are only so many viable replacement candidates.

So as a fan, you would prefer the lowest possible OI:VRC ratio…

And even more so as a numbers guy, for that easy at a glance understanding of the situation.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 17, 2025 at 10:25 am

well we have the contact maven Venezuelan Rodriguez dinking away at Sac. Big steal from the yanks, right?

  48. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2025 at 11:00 am

I would hope so Xoot, there best hitting catcher Rodriguez rotting away in Sac is just added frustration,he’s not even a callup candidate without some moves made, I just don’t get that? He’s easily a upgrade over Kinzer.Giants continue keeping players like Launch 🚀 Seymour,Beck and others on the 26 man roster is a joke..

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 17, 2025 at 11:11 am

I’m not sure he’s really a catcher. Looks like they don’t know where to put him.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2025 at 12:38 pm

This. Not sure but I think he’s mostly been a DH.

  49. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2025 at 11:35 am

And then we have are backup outfielders Gilbert hitting .056 and McCray hitting .100 doesn’t inspire confidence.Hell you might as well callup Luciano he does lead the organization with 20 HR’s , yeah probably a butcher in the field but who care anymore..

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 17, 2025 at 11:54 am

I’d give Gilbert way more playing time. See what he can do and not do. Less than 20 ABs is nothing. McCray is a pretty well known quantity. He’s a K machine at the big league level, and it looks like that’s not going to change unless some light bulb goes off with him— in other words, the usual Giants lackluster, flawed farmhand outfielder …

On KNBR right now, Kerry Crowley and some other guy are letting loose with all the criticisms and reality checks of the Giants organization we always are talking about here. What a breath of fresh air!…

  51. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 17, 2025 at 1:09 pm

7, 8 , 9 starting holes today are Bailey, Gilbert, Fitzgerald.

I’m optimistic today, so I’ll go with a 2 for 10 with only 4 Ks in that group. No HRs, no RBIs, no walks, no xtra base hits. Hoping for maybe a hit batsman to get one of them on, too, so 3x getting on base.

Giants have 4 LHBatters in starting LU. Rays RH starter is reverse the norm, he’s actually better against LHBs. So, RHbatters better be ready to get things done.

I’ve heard on radio some of these gambler shows supported by MGMGrand, etc. They are hitting hard prop bets on how many runs the Giants get per game, through 5 innings, in first inning, etc. They’re Always betting the under, ha ha…

  53. xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 17, 2025 at 1:20 pm

Devers is doing his best to defend TWAT’s chastity, going forward. Didn’t he win a sombrero last night? On his way today.

  54. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 17, 2025 at 1:24 pm

Li with his double proving again why the dope Melvin should be putting him leadoff every friggin’ game, no matter what.

Otherwise, Devers has now K’d 8X in the last 3 games including in the first inning today. 50+ games post trade, I think it’s time to seriously ask WTF is wrong with this guy? How long does it take to acclimate? Is he hurt? Does he need an eye exam? Freaked by Oracle? Hates the cold and wind? New league ? — but, wait, we have interleague play.

So, why does a top 10 MLB hitter turn into milquetoast as soon as he puts on a Giants uni ?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2025 at 1:41 pm

Lee OBP is worse than Chapman Ramos Devers Smith and Yaz, tied with Schmitt. guess it depends on what you want out of leadoff guy. Hopefully he does well there and it works out.

As a leadoff this year he’s hitting .174 with OPS of .635. Highest OPS spot in lineup for him is 7th, where OPS is .844 in 63 ABs. Also where he’s hit most often beside 3 spot.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 17, 2025 at 1:43 pm

He needs to hit leadoff, period. No more jacking him around.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2025 at 2:11 pm

Based on what exactly? I don’t mind Melvin shaking up the lineup and trying something different, but there is zero past evidence it’s best spot for Lee to be in.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 17, 2025 at 2:34 pm

There is zero evidence since Devers got here that this team is anything but crap. Li is a slap hitter, he’s fast, he actually can steal a bag once in a while, and he’s not an idiot baserunner like some of the other players. There’s your evidence. Try something that looks like to your eyes is something that will work, if given the time. Li is still figuring out MLB. Quit fucking with him in the LU. When you are dogmeat, why not try something that looks obvious, and screw stats developed over the season where essentially a rookie to MLB has been jacked around all over the lineup.

  55. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2025 at 1:30 pm

Nice job by Webb on Caminero, in trio of .800 OPS guys.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2025 at 1:33 pm

Rays are about middle of AL for runs scored and OPS. 2 games under .500, 4th AL East and trail WC race by 5.5…about same as SF. They have been playing in Yanks minor league park this year. Not sure what to make of that.

  56. James's avatar James said, on August 17, 2025 at 1:31 pm

now that was a great catch. He actually knew that he’d trapped it between his knees.
