A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

One Small Step to 81

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 19, 2025

Giants score 4 in the first and then gear it down and cruise to a 4-3 win. I just want them to get to 81 wins. Who’s got odds on that?

Before anyone shits on Victor Robles for throwing a bat at a pitcher they should watch this breakdown by jomboy

It’s very hard to hit someone with a thrown bat from that distance. I think it was more of a symbolic gesture. Campaneris tried it in playoffs vs. Tigers way back. Gotta check if he was punished…

Giants have 37 games left to play. Currently at 61Ws, so they need to play at a 20/37 = .540 clip to get to 81Ws. There’s some tough teams left on that schedule. 15 are with Pads, Brewers, Cubs, Doghairs. 3 with Orioles. 6 left with Rocks, but they’ve been playing better than the Giants. This last 1/2 season the Giants have had a habit of losing to the lower teams. 81 seems a very big longshot to me. I’m thinking 74-76 is about where they should end up…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 19, 2025 at 9:54 am

Pre-season, I think I guessed they would get to 87Ws. After end of April, that was doable, then reality hit. From today, they’d have to play .700 ball to get there now. Pipedream…

They’ve given up the same number of runs as they’ve scored. I see little evidence that will change between now and the end of the season. 78 or 82 wins, meh either way.

Loo, regarding your question about the phrase when someone is said to be “comfortable in their skin,” I think it’s a pretty good phrase. I think it gets the essence of saying that someone seems at peace with themself.

For celebrities, it makes me think of Johnny Carson, who I rarely watched; but he gave that kind of vibe on his talk show. He seemed to make the guests very comfortable. A lot of other talk show-types come across as anxious and antsy, like they’re afraid they have to keep the viewers from turning the channel every second. Johnny acted like he didn’t care about that. But that was the older Johnny. Maybe he was the antsy-type of host when he was younger.

“Comfortable in their skin” could easily cross into “self-satisfied,” which is more of a negative thing. Dick Cavett, on air, came across to me as the self-satisfied type. I never got the appeal of his show.

      Cavett had cooler guests.

Skin, as a thing, is very interesting. Years ago I had an allergic reaction to something, and I broke out all over my body in blotches the size of nickels and quarters. I’d never seen my skin go crazy like that. Skin can be such an immediate indicator of something wrong. A trip to the emergency room and an antibiotic brought relief.

I think it was Kat who said that Adames always dousing the player who is getting the postgame interview has gotten beyond old.

Man, can’t the player just be allowed to enjoy the moment as they’re getting interviewed? No, Adames has to make it about himself (in my opinion.) “Look at me, I’m Mr. Super Teammate! I jump up and down, and I douse people!” A type of fake-hustle, in my opinion.

And, as we all know, SF is COLD at night, usually. A player doesn’t need to be doused in ice cold liquid.

Sounds like from what I have read/seen on the news, the worst conditions are expected late Wednesday through Thursday, when the center of Erin was expected to be at its closest point to the coast. Not exactly certain how vulnerable he is (as I did not visit his home), but I do know that where we had lunch – there were hellacious waves battering the shore . . . That day was a sunny, otherwise “normal” summer day on the outer banks. John has fire fighting/rescue skills . . . consequently, him and his significant other will be okay. In fact, I know John will be thinking about others and will likely be volunteering at the fire department.

Left Cali Sunday morning and arrived late yesterday afternoon (spent the night in Klamath Falls). Good to be back at our new WA home.

Sorry willie, I somehow missed this earlier.

Still not sure about Erin and the ones behind it, but right now we’re feeling pretty well prepared. We went to the beach today to see the waves, the rips are pretty intense right now, double red flag days. We’ve been getting hit with a lot of storms the last couple of weeks, so depending on ground saturation and winds (expecting 40-50 mph). we could have some trees come down. Thanks for asking.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 19, 2025 at 8:35 pm

Ahh. I take it that your generator is elevated too (like your house)? Stay safe John!

      • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on August 19, 2025 at 8:56 pm

Yeah, our generator is up about 4 feet I guess (house is up 8 feet). The generator is in a small shed about 25 feet from the house (you do get wet when firing the bad dude up), it is portable, but it is also able to run the whole house (except dryer). It’s a Harbor Freight Predator 9000

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 19, 2025 at 8:59 pm

Nice . . . Ergo – the 9000 I assume provides upwards of 9000 watts, right? More than plenty to run a house. Sheesh, sounds like it possibly can even run the AC too, right?

      • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on August 19, 2025 at 9:28 pm

Yes, it runs our mini split system (AC and heat). The clothes dryer puts some strain on it so if I want to run that just gotta turn some other things off I guess.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 19, 2025 at 9:33 pm

That’s quite a generator. I had a very reliable generator at my CA home, with only 240 (dryer) and AC not being used. Normally not needed as the outages almost always occurred in winter.

Fitzgerald has proven to be true AAAAer. He’s a K machine, and a true utility guy — i.e., he’s not very good defensively wherever they put him. I don’t think any new knowledge of his skill set is discoverable with more MLB playing time. Whatever gave him the ability to mash HRs repeatedly over a short period last season has disappeared with the league figuring him out. He’s got Yaz disease — very susceptible to high heat…

    Probably game over. Why?

The San Francisco Giants most recently overcame a multi-run deficit on June 11, 2025, against the Colorado Rockies. In that game, the Giants secured a victory after a comeback in the 8th inning, erasing a three-run deficit. The final score was 10-7. This comeback was particularly notable as it extended their one-run win streak at the time.

  32. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on August 19, 2025 at 8:27 pm

From Athletic article….”Adames talking about Brewers ‘They lost a home run hitter and decided to get aggressive on the basepaths. Put pressure on the defense” brewers lead league in scoring unearned runs! Article tals about brewers vs giants. below is from article….

“The Giants have not exerted that kind of pressure, and Adames has been as passive as everyone else. He stole 21 bases for the Brewers last season. He’s stolen six in eight tries this year. You have to play to the scoreboard, of course, which means limiting the risks you take on the basepaths when your team is trailing by multiple runs. It’s difficult for the Giants to push the envelope when the opposing starter keeps stamping their hitters with “return to sender.”

As the losses mounted on the last two homestands, though, Adames decided something had to change. A little more than a week ago, he walked into Giants manager Bob Melvin’s office and asked for a standing green light to run.

Melvin’s response: “Yeah. I’m all for it. I want him to be aggressive, and I want him to have the green light.”

When the Giants finally snapped their seven-game losing streak on Sunday, Adames created a difference-making spark on the basepaths. He took advantage of a loopy relay throw to score from first base on Dom Smith’s bases-loaded single. It was the Giants’ first three-run single since Sept. 8, 1988, when Kirt Manwaring drove in Kevin Mitchell and Mike Aldrete and Joel Youngblood came sprinting home behind them.”………

Now I’m happy Adames taking this route, and madder at Melvin for being such a passive idiot!

Bottom 4 SF hitters in the LU went 0-13. If you count Wilmer’s hit as a PH for Gilbert, it was 1-14. Can’t often win doing that. Devers 9 Ks in last 21 ABs.

Fitz tonite 0-3 with 2 Ks. In the last 5 games he’s played, he’s K’d 6X in 12 ABs. He is a freakin’ K machine — @ 29% for the season at SF. Is there nobody else in Sac that they bring up and use instead of him ?

29% ain’t so bad if he would just do some hitting. A pitcher who k’s one per inning is fanning 33.3% – pretty routine these days…

That’s the point. He’s not hitting, so the K rate is magnified even more. Compare Alonso at 26+% K rate, and he’s clubbing HRs and an OPS of .871. You can accept these days a slugger at 30%, but not a utility infielder whose glove is just OK and OPS at .616. He’s less than a dime a dozen…
