San Jose Giants are 76-42 and doing well at A ball level. Ishi is hitting coach and they have promoted some guys out there up the ladder. If Posey wanted to Fire Someone! Ishi would probably get a lot of rope.

Matos and Adames went 4-7 3 bombs and double, everyone else 1-24 last night. that lone hit came from Dom Smith in his only AB. yuck. too many oh fers from rest and Lee K at end on Ball 4 sucked.

Whis was tough to watch. Meltdown inning had 2 WPs, HBP and a failure to cover home plate on pitch Bailey couldn’t handle, though Bailey bailed him out eventually by getting back runner at 3b on a baserunning mistake by Brewers. Too many non competitive easy take pitches out of the zone, 88 pitches to get through 4 innings. Try throwing strikes and getting ahead pls.

I had a more positive take on his outing. He threw 54 strikes, putting him right at the mlb avg. percentage of strikes to balls. The unfortunate number of foul balls loomed larger for me than the other stuff. Many of the swings were defensive. From the pitcher’s POV, there’s some element of bad luck when hitters are a small fraction of an inch away from a pop up or weak groundball for an out on so many foul balls. That said, until he strings together a few good outings, I’m staying a little skeptical that 92-93 with the best change up in baseball is going cut it.

the record seems stellar considering how steadily players move through the a ball level during the season. By the end of the year, the team looks like nothing but teenagers. Good ones, though. Speaking of Level, highly touted Jhonny is very small. He did nothing much for the tv cameras last night. But he’s 18.

didn’t Burrell leap from hitting coach at San Jose to sf? Hmmmm.

        the San Jose record

Agree with willie that Whis was extremely hard to watch. The more this kid pitches, the less impressed I am and more wondering what all the hype was about? Is this all he’s got? Is he still somewhat injured or effectively rehabbing? He reminds me of Woody, but without the guile, command and the ball movement.

Velo only in low 90s. Little movement on his pitches – even his breaking ball whatever it is. The vaunted change-up was a nothing burger, mostly. He looks like he’s nibbling all the time, afraid to or unable to throw a competitive strike. Lots of pitches the batters spat on to get count leverage in their favor. Hitters foul off his best stuff in or near the zone until the cows come home, run up the pitch count, and then when he’s exasperated with the AB they can jump on a cookie. Long ABs also aren’t good for keeping those vaunted SF defenders on their toes.

4 frames with an 88 pitch count — no bueno. Every time the count got to 2-2, 3-1, 3-2 or whatever, which was often, it felt like cringe time — the batter was about to crush the next pitch. Surprised/pleased that Melvin actually had a timely hook for once and took him out in time after 4 with only 2 given up before the roof caved in.

He’ll be 25 this October. He’s had enough starts to show he’s definitely not dominant. His overall minor league WHIP is 1.355 over 280 innings and 4 seasons. Giants coaches need to help him develop another pitch or sharpen that breaking ball to help get batters out sooner by contact, keep the pitch count down per AB. That mediocre stuff with just a go-to change-up that may be on/off depending on the start isn’t going to feed the bulldog. I’m dubious whether this kid is going to do much for the team long term beyond maybe a 5, a 4 at best. Not a candidate for the Pen IMO, he doesn’t have reliever stuff…

    • James's avatar James said, on August 23, 2025 at 10:48 am

I’ve always been mystified by the ability “to pitch to contact.” What is it that separates a pitch a hitter makes weak contact on and puts into play from one the hitter has frequently made even worse contact on and fouled off? That question is much less rhetorical than usual. I get that the context of any pitch makes some difference. Whis did get ahead of 10 of 15 batters yesterday.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 23, 2025 at 11:00 am

Good points James and he did limit damage for most part.

did you see Athletic column by Tyler Kepner (sliders) on Bryan Woo? very interesting read; type of pitcher that appeals to me. Ray often works same way, unafraid to come inside with fastball to RHs and throw strikes.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 23, 2025 at 11:19 am

This doesn’t answer my question, but it’s in the general territory:

      • James's avatar James said, on August 23, 2025 at 11:37 am

Just read the article on Woo. Maybe he’ll be the pitcher to convince announcers not to bleat about the inevitability of hitters punishing “mistakes” in the zone. Or maybe it’ll be the 2025 Giants offense.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 23, 2025 at 12:18 pm

The Giants are cratering. Hard to watch, but I’m happy about that. It adds clarity to the situation. Makes it easier for Buster to do needed off season moves to put out the dumpster fire and get this team on track to success. What to do with 30+ games left? I hope the Giants really use this time to find out what Buster keeps and what he jettisons. Such as, be smart and pick a couple of Sept call ups that will really play enough to be evaluated. Playing vets in spots where they could be testing young players is not productive.

Right field has been a wasteland. Play Gilbert. Is he a prospect or not? Matos, meh. Play him once in a while to keep him awake. Don’t pogo him up/down to Sac, two years of that is probably one reason he’s playing the way he plays. How can he possibly be in long term plans? Trade him in the offseason for a low minors prospect outfielder and a bag of balls.

Nice if they could bring up Tidwell if he comes off the River Cats IL with arm feeling OK. Let’s see what this guy has.

Keep Li at leadoff and see whether he belongs there.

Play Schmitt exclusively at 2nd. Phuck Phitz. Since Chapman isn’t going anywhere, Schmitt has no other permanent position to go to. He seems to have potential as a Kent-type 2nd sacker. Like Kent, he has limited range over there, but glove is better than Kent when he does get to the ball. Maybe his hitting develops and his pop and SLG get more consistent. If he’s not in plans to play 2nd in 2026, trade him in the off season for an OFer to a team who needs a 3rd baseman — and pick up a vet 2nd baseman…

Giants given two baserunners with walks. Then, 2 Ks in a row, Bailey+Gilbert. Phttt. Wash-K-Repeat.

Bailey going backwards towards Mendoza. Now hitting about .207 with that latest K. OPS at .560, OPS+ at 63. Yikes…

Already losing interest in this game . . . back to The Mystery of Carson Whisenhauser.

    https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/player-scroll?player_id=687931#pitchTypes

His slider actually has above average drop, with little horizontal break. If he had any command of it, it could be that secondary kill pitch he needs. Unfortunately, the sinker is not only below avg. velocity, it also seems to defy gravity and fight its very identity. I don’t see how he succeeds with a shitty fastball like that.

74-88 with this epic slide is my final season ending record.

I’m so done with this pathetic team.

Rather watch 3-4 th stringers on 49ers tonight then watch constant K’s Zero runs most every night /day whatever..

  9. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 23, 2025 at 5:19 pm

Matos with a good AB, took some close pitches, fouled a couple off, jumped on a fastball for a single to center. He could have swung and K’d on a couple of teasers, but didn’t. He does have a good eye at the plate compared to most of his brethren. In contrast, immediately after that, Bailey caps a bad AB with a horrible swing on a slurve type pitch in the dirt. They really need to upgrade the catching position offense. Bailey’s got a season’s WAR of 0.5, that would be way underwater without his defensive contributions – – how much under, IDK…

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 23, 2025 at 5:38 pm

Horrible AB by Chapman. K’s on a wild ass outside pitch at his eyeballs. Matos getting good contact, forces the error and 2 runs in — nice…

  11. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 23, 2025 at 5:39 pm

Matos not swinging at bad pitches is revelation in itself. Brewers can’t get him out. And he steals a bag.

  12. James's avatar James said, on August 23, 2025 at 5:42 pm

That’s three straight awkward slides by Matos. Maybe he really does need coaching help in that complex dimension of the game.

  13. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 23, 2025 at 5:43 pm

At least the Giants tried a safety squeeze. F’d it up with an subpar bunt, of course…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 23, 2025 at 5:51 pm

Last night, like I had predicted, the Brewers bunted in a similar situation to pressure the Giants D. Schmitt couldn’t throw Turang out — he eventually scored the 4th run…

  14. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 23, 2025 at 5:52 pm

That play at the plate was ALL due to the catcher. Bad throw, but he went with the throw – his glove going clockwise and met Matos hands at the plate. Matos didn’t do anything wrong. Just an outstanding play by their catcher.

Lee hitting better in August. KBO regular season 2025 would end 8/31. They play Tuesday-Sunday 16 games vs. 9 different teams for 144 game season. So hopefully he can finish strong and get through 162.

Now, that frame job by Bailey got the 3rd strike call for out #2. Nice break for Webb on a good pitch. Next year, that call is protested, it’s a ball. Then Webb gets out of it with a pop up. Webb with veteran pitching there…

James, noted that Webb threw 58 strikes yesterday (handful more than Whis), when he hit 2 walked 2 and allowed 9 baserunners in 6 innings. Maybe Whis wasn’t as bad after all.

that fangraphs column on fouls was interesting too…conclusion writer made in final paragraph got me: “It’s become harder to make contact at all and the game has continued to select for players who swing harder and miss bigger.” which describes few of our usual suspects.

    • James's avatar James said, on August 24, 2025 at 9:12 am

Yeah, I think the foul balls distorted Whisenhunt’s last outing. But overall that fastball just doesn’t have enough velo or movement, certainly not without the other pitch Snarkk’s called for. The slider has some bite, but only a handful of those he’s thrown have been well-located.

whiz’s diving change doesn’t fool batters much. It doesn’t resemble his inert fastball out of his hand, apparently. He’s scared of his slider, nibbles with it. Perhaps that’s wise. Hang a few of those and he’s doomed. Ain’t no Caspar Hauser level mystery here.
