A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Exciting Times

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 25, 2025

Man, we haven’t had a game like that in what seems like forever. Miller was awesome on the radio in that 9th inning. He genuinely got me excited about the team again even if it was just a fleeting moment.

Sadly, we now return home where all we do is lose.

Day off to prepare for that letdown.

hey all, referencing a few negative comments in Matos since his call up, lest we forget, the kid really is still just a kid. He doesn’t turn 24 until January next year.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 25, 2025 at 9:45 am

He sure can look good at times. He can also look like a deer in the headlights.

      Play the kids!

Wish they’d simply cut Wilbur and bring up Eldridge. No reason to even play Flores at this point. Give Eldridge a good long look so he can get some MLB time.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 25, 2025 at 9:50 am

Agree in principle, Chuck but it would be such classless treatment of the wonderful Mr. Ed. Might also have something to do with starting Eldridge’s “clock” earlier than they’d like although I don’t really know how that works…

      • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on August 25, 2025 at 9:52 am

I agree about Wilbur. I think he has some lingering injury issue. A few weeks ago Melvin kept saying he needed to get Wilbur “off his feet”. Tgst was around the time Devers took his first starts at 1st base.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 25, 2025 at 11:19 am

He can sign with the Mets for their playoff run.

Matos has turned himself into a tough AB with pop. He’s still a bit clumsy in the OF. But he has improved there too, I think. You’d think he could learn to slide….

      let him play.

however, I gotta say Loo has a powerful point, it would be a real slap to Wilbur who has been a great Giant.

Sheesh! That’s revealing. Am I understanding this chart for correctly? This means the G’s have the slowest bats in MLB?

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 25, 2025 at 10:28 am

I think it purports to show each team’s gain or loss. It doesn’t compare teams vs each other. So if the giants had comparatively very high collective bat speed last year, this years drop off wouldn’t mean much. lol.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 25, 2025 at 10:38 am

The Giants are 8th in collective bat speed:

        https://tinyurl.com/3jsysc44

Wade’s dropoff probably affected the relative numbers a bit. Not sure who else.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 25, 2025 at 10:46 am

Giants have had 4898 PAs so far. Wade had 169 of those. Now, obviously, I’m not a numbers guy. But….

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 25, 2025 at 11:24 am

AFAICT that chart just shows we were thrown the 8th most pitches.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 25, 2025 at 11:51 am

Teensie weensie? Wade’s was the one drop off in bat speed I remembered cited earlier in the year.

You’re right, Chuck, here’s the actual sort:

        https://tinyurl.com/4d9u3djn

which shows the decline and has them 27th. Not sure what happened. I have a screen shot of the original sort I did with bat speed that showed the Giants in 8th. Weird glitch.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 25, 2025 at 12:02 pm

I thought the drop in bat speed was interesting. Not dispositive of anything. SD’s collective bat speed probably plummeted when Arraez joined the team. But given the giants basic continuity with the addition of two big bats, their drop may mean something. Hell, maybe is good coaching.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 25, 2025 at 1:12 pm

Surprising to me, the chart shows the Giants have only 4 guys in the top 100 worst % of swings in which they “square up” “the ball. All are starters, which is not good. League average in “squaring up” 25.5%:

        Bailey (21.7%, 32nd worst)

        Adames (21.8%, 35th)

        Chapman (23.0%, 55th)

        Ramos (24.7%, 91st)

Next is Wilmer — he comes in above the league average in “squaring up”:

        (27.6%, 149th)

Next is JH Lee (34.4%, 204th). That’s a good stat arguing for tghe leadoff spot.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 25, 2025 at 2:20 pm

Ok, Wade’s bat speed went down 10%, the Giants has gone down 10% collectively, and Wade has 3% of the PAs. I think his negative impact on 2025 team bat speed has now been quantified. 🙂

Perhaps my perspective is dissimilar from majority view on this blog but I derived no great satisfaction from yesterday’s 9th inning comeback vs Brewers. I’m tired of yet another year of meaningless baseball in late Aug and all of Sept. Excluding 2021, Giants baseball from Aug 15th – Sept 30th past decade has been devoid of energy, passion and interest.

    • James's avatar James said, on August 25, 2025 at 2:12 pm

Because it had such a crappy ending, many seem to leave out 2016 as a year the Giants were relevant.

      • Dean's avatar Dean said, on August 25, 2025 at 2:21 pm

Fair point James. While loss to Cubs in 2016 after 9th inning meltdown in divisional series was devastating, I have fond memories of wild card win over Mets with MadBum shutout and Gillespie 9th inning 3-run blast.

I stand corrected. 9 years (2021 excluded) of non-meaningful baseball in last 4-6 weeks of each season. I long for games in Sept that matter.

The Giants when I was a kid were a mild diversion till football season started. After 1973 at least.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 25, 2025 at 4:46 pm

Chuck, what’s your Niners projection for this season? An OLine that is a high ankle sprain on Trent Williams from being iffy to crappy, a game #1 WR room that looks like a Revolutionary War painting, a RB room that is a CMC calf injury away from being populated only by The Latest New Guy, half of the defense are rookies, and a head case field goal kicker who for some reason hasn’t been replaced and WILL cost them a game or two until he has. Plus, the supposedly EZ schedule probably isn’t that EZ.

      10-7 ?

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 25, 2025 at 5:08 pm

The 49ers live and die on the O line. They run block sorta well, and CMC should be good for a decent workload. But giving Purdy time is paramount. Purdy is great at improvising, but to count on that is a major problem. The WR situation is a bitch with Demarcus Robinson getting suspended for 3 games and everyone else hurting. That being said, Purdy and Pearsall look very comfy together. Having Aiyuk and Demarcus Robinson and a healthy Cowing out there gives Purdy a lot of options.

I think they improved markedly (Moody Nick excepted) on special teams and defense. Robert Saleh showed tons of different schemes and lines as opposed to the last 2 DCs who showed nothing but 4-3 all fucking game.

But this is all predicated on Shanahan and his stubbornness. He needs to figure out how to spell CMC. I’m glad Deebo is gone because it was ludicrous to run him between the tackles. But the new guy Robinson NEEDS to be rotated in and out ALL GAME. Shanny’s usual MO is to run CMC until the 49ers are up 30 with 5 minutes left in the game.

Shanny is not a good in-game adjustment guy. He’s a great play designer and he can scheme with the best of them. But his 4th quarter failures are epic and many. And they stem from Shanahan not being able to put teams away. He goes conservative too early, and doesn’t know when to take chances.

Even with all the injuries last year, the 49ers lost 5 games with the ball AND the lead in the 4th quarter.

With a injury-moderate season, they should be able to go 12-5. I think the Rams fall off the table. Stafford isn’t gonna survive the season. Seattle had what looks like a good draft and they always seem to hang around. But they too have O line problems, and Darnold looks to get pounded. AZ is a hot mess.

Beyond that, the 49ers now have TWO players who have been shot and lived to tell the tale. Brian and Rickey can exchange war stories.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 25, 2025 at 8:21 pm

Wow, I didn’t think you be that optimistic at 12-5. They have to get healthy fast, and stay healthy, that’s for sure.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 25, 2025 at 8:27 pm

Contrary to popular belief, I’m an optimistic guy. A fast start would do a world of good.

But yeah, I think the team did well to vastly improve the defense with the draft and hiring Saleh. The offense should be fine. My worry really is special teams. They did a lot to improve, but if these games are coming down to Moody, I ain’t happy about that.

That being said, let’s hope the injuries are contained to the preseason. CJ West, Cowing, RB Jenkins, and Upton Stout are all returning to practice. I think we have the offense, even with all the injuries, to score points.

It’s just two now. Active roster goes to 28. Hardly worth it, seems to me. I guess they limited it to prevent managers like Boch for loading up on endless Pen arms, but they already made the minimum 3 batters per inning rule for relievers, so seems to me that takes care of that issue.

IDK the details about whether it’s possible or how to send back down one or both for different ones brought up, etc.

Strongly against bringing up Eldridge. Why? strikes out 30% of the time in AAA. Better fastballs and breaking balls in the show. He is still very young (20yo) and do we really want him around with the team now? All the “stars” are bad and the team has no energy. For veteran players on a team that was contending and now tanked, the vets are likely down, and not always the best environment for a young guy. I might change my opinion if they start a bit of winning. He can get a taste by being in spring training in MLB camp:)

When the Giants traded for Rafael Devers, they were 2 1/2 games ahead of the Brewers in the National League standings. In the 59 games since then, the Giants lost 20 1/2 games in the standings to the Brewers, and that’s with them taking two out of the three this weekend. That’s how cold they were, and that’s how hot the Brewers were.

From the Athletic article abut Matos:(
