Cubbies
They are significantly better than we are. Factor in us having to play them in our own home park and we are really up against it in this series.

The worst trade no one ever talks about in December 1965. Bill Hands and Randy Hundley to the Cubs for Lindy McDaniel and Don Landrum. WHY???? Hands would have been to Marichal and Perry what Claude Osteen was to Koufax and Drysdale. Hundley a perfect bridge from Haller to Dietz. LM had one good year out of the Giants pen then got dumped for washed up Bill Monbouquette. Landrum was a total zero. Still think it cost us a pennant or two…
Agreed Loo. And 1965 was first season of 4 in a row when Giants under Herman Franks finished 2nd every time. They’d win 90 and go home.
We had such good teams those years but we could never quite match the Dogs or the Cards.
2 really solid players Giants gave up on…seemed to happen a lot with OFs where they were overloaded but C not so much.
I agree also.
Loo…Yeah that was “ Hands Down” another one of taken to the back shed and beat up move by Stoneham Hands&Hundley were stalwarts for Cubs along with Santo,Williams,Banks,Beckett,Kissinger,Jenkins,it still shocks me they could never get over the hump and win a Championship..
But Hey…I still remember “Hands Down” the board card game from 64-65? It was great along with “Battling Tops”,Skittle Bowl,Creepy Crawler machine very toxic molds ( parents didn’t know how bad that smell was,are did they? One less terrible kid to raise was probably their thinking 🤔
Great stuff, Kat. “Hands Down” gave me anxiety…
I made my son cry by kicking his ass in Hands Down.
Hands a compadre of Luis Castillo and Zach Wheeler. Does anyone else belong to this club? Perry doesn’t count.
Liriano and Nathan?🤮🤮🤮
Right, yikes . . .
What’s funny is that they valued a decorated fireman so highly.
Or maybe Hundley and Hands demanded $500 a year more in salary, and the Giants showed them who’s boss.
I think you just hit on it, James…
Stoneham always had $$ problems…good thing Mrs. Payson took Mays off his hands.
Giants open 2026 vs. Yanks at Oracle — a rare season opener at home!
I sense a 1-2 start to season.
Already with doom? sigh Webb and Ray won back in NYC in April vs. Yanks and while Hicks got beat he and his contract long gone thankfully.
I had completely different take from yours on Brewers series. they lost first one on walk off bomb off R Rod, which had to hurt. responded by winning next game easily and then spoiled Uecker tribute with great comeback off MIL closer and his 101 heat.
They didn’t act like team that had folded tents or brooded without direction or clubhouse discord and looked forward to golf dates. Maybe return of Adames to former home team mattered but they finished the trip like a team still playing together and fighting for each other. It was good baseball all weekend and it would be great if they could build off it.
Well, they’ve gone 4-8 in their last 12 series to the tune of 9-19.
18-28 in July and August.
Hard to find anything optimistic in that.
Some very good teams have had long losing streaks, including Tigers dogs and Mets. Baseball is too unpredictable week to week season to season-that’s what makes it so great, like SF playing well in MIL after Padres owned them. No WS winner repeats and it’s unlikely Dogs will this year.
Last year Tigers were 3rd AL Central and lost to Guards in playoffs. this year Guards are under .500, unlikely to even make playoffs and trail Detroit by 12.5. Tigers and Brewers have best records in each league–who saw that coming?
changes the odds of an opening homestand rainout, which iirc has happened only once in the new park — 2018.
Slusser says in Chron Rodriguez is now at C and coaches rave about hitting. Him I’d call up Sept.
One lost play no one ever gets nostalgic about or laments: the pitch out.
back to that 2014 al WC game again?
classic Bob Melvin move, too late. Ill prepared. Arguably.
Or in the nick of time … if he’d gotten the throw off it undoubtedly would have skipped into CF.
Don’t see the butcher boy much anymore either.
Belt shoulda learned that one.
He would have only used it successfully in the ABs he hit home runs.
The most famous pitch out ever, wasn’t…
I hated the Reds back then more than the fuckin’ A’s. Remember that vividly.
One of my favorite bunts.
Niners could use a guy that tackles like the Indian’s first baseman and a running back that blocks like Randle’s block he laid on the pitcher…
Kat — to answer your question yesterday, RRodriguez has been ruled out for a while with an elbow sprain. How long on IL, unknown. Heard on KNBR. Roupp has a deep bone bruise in the knee, not super serious but done; he’s out until Spring Training…
Over in Honululu, Hawaii took a walk off 23-20 stunner win over Stanfurd by a last second 38 yard field goal. Maybe the Niners can grab the Rainbows’ kicker real quick…
hah! They cut down the roster and now they don’t have a punter.
No worries about the home field disadvantage. The Cubs always put enough butts in the seats that it’ll feel like an away game. Verlander gets win #2 tonight.
sat amid cubs fans in club level one game. They didn’t seem much interested in what happened on the field in real time. Big on replays, though.
my cousin Chuck,a huge Cubs fan, had club level seats in section 210 I used all the time.
back when the club level was full of laptop toting weenies who spent 2/3 of the game in the bar.
game we attended the giants were still making focused crowd shots available on line the day after. My sons and I were watching the game and none of the cubs hatted people around us were. It was funny.
I guess I’m just fascinated by arcane little language things. Flemming, when saying “game” isn’t saying “game-a” anymore. He’s tried to fix that, gotta give him credit. But I’m not all that satisfied with the fix. He’s squeezing down hard on the word to get rid of that “a” he would add at the end. And now he says the word as “gheem.”
Sorry to point that out if “gheem” becomes annoying.
Javy Lopez has shoved Pence back a notch in road game rotation I think.
Yeah, Javy’s willing to be a bit more critical of the players. Pence just doesn’t do that.
As you know Zum, with me it’s expressions. Notice how everyone is “leaning into” things the past year or so? Agony for me. Some never go away, like “having said that” and “at the end of the day.” And the self interviewers. Do I like pizza? Sure. Do I eat it every day? No. Do I like different toppings? Absolutely. There’s a guy on NY radio who I’d like to burn alive…
But “That said”, tell me that’s ok, man!
Lee gets night off. Gilbert in CF btw Ramos and Matos.
Vs. dreaded LHP SP
test
WordPress is crap
Yeah, Loo, I hate junk phrases, too.
Oh my goodness I hate “right?” It’s fingernails on a chalkboard for me. “So I’m walking along, right? And I see a big dog, right? And it’s chasing a squirrel, right?” Please, please have mercy on me.
“Not gonna lie”
“I tell you what”
Y’know?
I’ll go with another home loss tonight. Kiss of death LHP, Boyd, going for Cubs. He’s good. 12-6, ERA 2.61, although all losses are on the road. Lotsa Ks generated, I’ll guess Giants K at least 9X in the game. Add to Giants kryptonite being LHP starters, Giants play like crap behind Verlander, almost always. There is no reason to favor the Giants in this one …
matos again comes up with a drive into the corner unsure where to throw. The confused double clutch didn’t cost a base that time. But still…,
Maybe they should put flags with numbers next to the bases, like in golf…
The famous Mr. Ed!
Willlllburrrrrrrr!
Only been 2 months since a homer but hey.
Would love to see Matos keep rolling.
Damn. Nice play.
He gets another chance.
A bird in hand is worth two in the bush!
I ain’t lyin’.
“Don’t kid yourself” has been a running joke with a Jersey friend of mine for about 50 years.
Wow, Schmitt
Bullpen mound woulda killed Schmitt.
someone must’ve told matos about the cutoff man between innings. Or maybe they hooked up some blinking light on scmitt’s jersey.
Verlander throwing lottttttttts of pitches.
Ramos throws to the wrong base.
It’s not his fault that they all look alike…
9 k’s may be woefully low.
Weeeeeeee! Gonna lose this one.
And that’s how you lose the game.
I know if I look it up, it won’t be true, but Verlander has given up about 200 runs this year with two outs.
And likely more than a few with zero and one out.
Bailey is sooooooooooooo fucking disappointing.
He should pull a Fitzgerald and just bunt every fucking time.
An article in the Chronicle about a catcher they got from the Yankees for Doval, his name is Jesus (last name?) supposed to be able to hit the ball. Might be brought up come September
Hopefully it’s Christ…
Alright Ramos!
Ramos gets it back.
A hit@@@@!!!!!
Our 2nd hit with RISP since the All Star break.
Make it a 3rd!
2 in a row?????
You forget the one that didn’t score the runner!
Devers with the bloop.
Our two shitty fielding OFers trying to remind us that enough offense is more than an equalizer.
The only reason that Bailey is out there is the pitchers like him. He is gold glove catcher, but IMO he has cost the Giants some games. The only other Giant I could compare him to is Jose Uribe, he could play SS but couldn’t hit.

Crappy!
Hey!! A bona fide banger!
Chapman adds on.
Dude, is looking like the Great Santini.
Or Jeff Kent.
“It’s better than dying of piles!”
Wow, Chapman earning some of that cheese. Now, if the Pen can do it’s job, Verlander finally gets a second win…
From the radio description just now, it sounds like TJ for RR wouldn’t be much of a surprise…
Gilbert now has 30 PAs and 30 ABs. Maybe a coach should tell him to try to take a walk instead of getting a hit.
Hunter Pence posted photos on social media today of himself officiating a wedding in Iceland today. There’s no way I could make that up.
Popular travel destination during travel biz days, Zum. And pretty reasonable compared to other places in Europe. One of good customers was from there, great guy.
Where Bobby Fischer obliterated Boris Spassky in 1972…
Nightmares of him batting lead off…
264!
W!- for V and vs. LHP as Walker wraps it up. Nicely done.
As I was saying –

2 out hits with RISP and a homer in the same game? What is happening?

Chapman looked bored with Adames’ tired dousing routine.
One day the pail will go flying and some poor reporter will lose 4 teeth. That should stop it…
Looked more pissed than bored to me. Maybe there’ll be some verifiable clubhouse acrimony at last.
