A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

12-3 Drubbing

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 28, 2025

Drubbing is a great word. Here we are, after taking all the pressure away and looking into the mirror of truth of who they really are this season…..they begin to win games. And while the win streak is modest, it’s against 2 of the best teams in the league.

And it begs the question…..where were these guys all Summer?

Some say they got nothing to play for but pride . Maybe that takedown of McGill Sunday and then Boyd Tuesday turned that pride into something more. Yeah a little late coming but if the Phillies didn’t implode the last 3 vs Mets, things would be interesting. In any case what happens today I hope shows they continue to have fire in the belly. Stats. IMO, means less than the chemistry of a team believing they are better and proving it.

Athletic has game time thread I checked after game ended. Wow Cubs fans really pissed about same things SF fans had been lately: RISP fails (like first inning GIDP with sacks loaded), lineup (Turner is washed and he and Kelly 4-5 ahead of PCA is nuts Hoerner only guy hitting) poor OF D by Tucker ( ala Ramos), etc. Giants fans clapped back–“hey you’re 20 games over .500 and haven’t dropped 13 of 15 at home” etc.

still no idea how Whis lasted 5 and got a W. Maybe James can clue us in–hope he had fun.

    Could be shades of 1951!

They have been consistently inconsistent all year.

But the 2-12 stretch and then the 7 game losing string offset the 8-1 start and the 8-1 stretch in June. Take away those and you have a .500 team.

Wobbly pitching and vanishing hitting. The biggest speed-bump seemed to be Ray and Webbie sucking in the summer. They couldn’t stop the bleeding. Other than them, only Roupp-Dee-Doo is pitching decently. All the rest have been varying flavors of bad.

Birdie, Teng, Whizz, Hicks, Dirty Harry, and even Hjelly man all scuffled bad. Then you have the misbegotten Turdlander. 2-10. His fate shouldn’t be that bad, but it is. And the pen got weaker after Rogers left and the closer situation got weird.

And around all that, the hitting was suck.

Are they finally jelling? Has MoTel finally settled on a lineup? Sort of. They just need to get as hot as the Brew Crew got and go 21-8. And the Mets crater.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 28, 2025 at 8:53 am

If nothing else, the team not quitting will probably save MoTel’s job if it was in any danger. Would still hope for some coaching changes regardless…

Seems to be prevailing opinion Loo. Posey might keep Melvin but coaching staff changes definitely happening.

Willie, when I hear the name Pete Crow Armstrong, I’m reminded of the old 49er, John David Crow. Maybe 4-5 guys here would remember him…

I’m reminded of John Crowe Ransom. Never read him, but in my youth I was told he’s an influential old school writer from Jim Crow land. You don’t forget that name.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 28, 2025 at 9:38 am

Yeah I remember him running back played with Cardinals before Niners. Always had soft spot for old STL Cards, had some cool players and great uni/helmet.

Dave Meggyesyy book was real eye opener. Out of Their League I think

Poor Jackie Smith. Never dropped a pass in his life till one hit him between the numbers in the Super Bowl as a Cowboy…

One of my favorite Super Bowl memories, DJ. Liked him as a Card.

Their QB back then was Jim Hart. Loved those teams unless they were playing us.

John David Crow was a little before my time, but he was basically Ken Willard before Ken Willard. Dick fucking Nolan and his 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense.

John Brodie would have fared a lot better with an even mildly aggressive head coach.

Webb definitely had a shitty July that was central to the collapse. I’m not sure what the complaint about Ray is, though.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 28, 2025 at 10:18 am

Ray lost 3 straight decisions from July 20, though in 2 of them Giants only got him 1 run each. I remember when Padres came here for that first series and knocked off Webb and Ray while Giants were in that awful stretch of not scoring. Ray also got knocked out in 5th (during 6 game losing streak) at Toronto (july 20 game), being charged with 5 runs after Bivens gave up 2 run HR after relieving him.

But nothing like Webb collapse in July.

Out of Giants remaining games, only real contending ones are 2 series vs. Dogs. They have 2 each with Rox, DBax and STL as well as Balt this weekend. Getting to 81 might be easier than we think.

I was hoping to see the posts about Ramos’s idiotic throw home and Devers’ failure to slide. Both plays happened right in front of me and elicited my vocal displeasure. Even harder to take when you see them unfold live. But no harm done in either case, although Ramo’s mistake was erased by the Hoerner bomb. Mental mistakes are often more offensive than consequential.

Spent a lot of the game catching up with friends I hadn’t seen in a long while. I usually watch games pretty intently . . . .

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 28, 2025 at 3:15 pm

Not with a team that is challenged to score runs.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 28, 2025 at 3:50 pm

Playing with fewer missed cutoff men etc. won’t turn a team that doesn’t score much and lacks good pitching into a winner. It just makes watching them even less bearable. If the Giants wind up missing the playoffs by 2-3 games this year, I’ll put the lousy base running etc. into the if only they had done this a little bit better bucket.

  6. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 28, 2025 at 10:15 am

if they make a run in Oct then it will likely be because the pressure is off and for whatever reason some guys just play better when the pressure is off. Beltran was like that for us. A run would go a long way making me believe in Bo-Mid a little more. If it’s just that they are playing better cause they feel no pressure that’s not really something Bo-Mid can address or any manager really

    • James's avatar James said, on August 28, 2025 at 10:23 am

Ok, using Beltran as an example, here are his post season numbers:

      https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beltrca01.shtml#players_batting_postseason

He is one of the greatest post season hitters of all time. I don’t think the pattern of his hitting with SF had anything to do with pressure.

      Here’s Devers:

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 28, 2025 at 11:47 am

You’ll never convince a Met fan of that, James.

All they’ll tell you is he struck out looking (on an 0-2 count) with 2 out – bases loaded – down 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th of NLCS Game 7 vs. STL in 2006…

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 28, 2025 at 2:50 pm

Definitely, James. Unless I’m confusing it with ’81, Yanks went on to win that series and I think Reggie might’ve gotten even with Welch to boot…

      • James's avatar James said, on August 28, 2025 at 2:56 pm

Yep, the revenge bomb off of Welch, a beautiful moment. Poor Carlos didn’t get a make up AB.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 28, 2025 at 3:27 pm

Beltran sucked when he got here, and then got hurt. Once the playoff race was done, he started hitting well.

It wasn’t about the playoffs it was about Beltran’s shittiness when he got here.

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 28, 2025 at 1:09 pm

It’s not a coincidence IMO that the Giants have scored better the last handful of games as Chappy has come somewhat out of his post-IL hitting coma. He’s 5-17 including 2 HRs and a double, 3 walks, 4 RBIs, scored 5 in the last 5 tilts. It just shows that if he and the other two big contract players had hit just decently with more SLG and earned their big cheddar, the Giants clearly would not have stunk so much in scoring during the free fall post May, especially post AS break. Devers has been similarly effective, going 6-16 over the last 5 games, but with those numbers bloated by his 2 HRs and a double coming all in last night’s game. Other than that one game in Milwaukee, Adames has been quiet at 4-18, nic that 2 run dinger he slammed just a few minutes ago.

The team’s success is obviously way dependent on the production of those 3. The other 5 position spots are a real crapshoot with the bat, with Ramos generally the most productive of those, and JHL still trying to figure out MLB pitching. Those 5 spots have to improve somehow for next season to reduce that dependency…

The previous two years, it was, if only Bailey managed a 700 OPS … and now as the D solidifies as an ongoing asset and 650 almost becomes acceptable, he gets significantly worse at the plate. Frustrating.

  12. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on August 28, 2025 at 1:46 pm

Don’t know if others saw this stat posted last night mid game..

SF had 3 OF’s start a game all under 25 Tuesday. Since 1980 (45 years!) only 2nd time Giants have done it. The next WORST has done it 21 times. We are 90% worse at developing OF’s than the 29th team in MLB over that span?? Insane!

    • James's avatar James said, on August 28, 2025 at 2:45 pm

I think there may be more straightforward ways of criticizing their OF development. They did have Bonds in LF for 15 years. They could have showcased their youngsters in 2012 if they didn’t have Blanco, Pagan, and Pence.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 28, 2025 at 3:24 pm

2 home-grown all star outfielders separated by 46 years is fairly self-explanatory.

Chuck, Flavor used Beltran as an example of someone who performed poorly because of pressure and who did well once the pressure was gone. I brought up his record in the highest pressure situations over his career. Unless he felt a unique stress simply being a Giant, I don’t think his mediocre start and hot finish for them was anything other than the usual streaks hitters go through.

Intended for the earlier thread above.

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 28, 2025 at 4:01 pm

So, Beltran was clutch in the playoffs? Well that doesn’t change the fact that he sucked here, got hurt, only started playing well when his team was out of the race, and didn’t seem to give one rats ass about being here.

What he did later doesn’t mean jack shit.

    • James's avatar James said, on August 28, 2025 at 5:52 pm

The question wasn’t about how his performance impacted the team. It was about whether or not psychological pressure affected his performance, however you want to judge it. If you’re not interested in that question, understood.

Giants 5-1 vs Cubs, 5-2 vs Brewers and 4-3 vs Phils. Combined 14-6 vs NL division leaders or .700 winning percentage. But 0-3 vs Twins, 2-4 vs Pirates and 2-4 vs Marlins. Combined 4-11 vs cellar dwellers or .266 winning percentage. True indicator of middle-of-road team.

But definitely didn’t see 5 game winning streak coming. Credit to Orange & Black for resurgence. They’re showing competitive fire.

Just damn disappointing Giants went through malaise from mid-June to mid-August. And that Mets found new life past week. 7 back in loss column steep hill to climb.
