A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

A Night To Remember

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 13, 2025

Sure enough, all our worst fears for that game came true. Conforto with a bomb. Our hitters cobbling together a whopping THREE hits in 10 innings. And then Bailey does that thing he always does in the last inning.

I woke up marveling at pitching. What makes a guy like Verlander so successful for so long? Even at 42 years old he’s still pitching great. How is he so remarkably different from guys like Seymour or Brebbia or freaking Mike LaCoss. LaCoss won 98 games in his career and all I remember about him is fuming over his starts and calling him Mike LaLoss.

All these guys make it to the major leagues, the highest of the the highs in their field. And they were all outstanding pitchers at lower levels across their lifetimes. And yet they achieve such vastly different levels of success. Think about it, every pitcher in the major leagues was lights out in high school, the BEST pitcher on their team and probably the entire league.

Anyway, it’s really been a pleasure to get to catch a glimpse of this guy’s Hall of Fame career this year. How is he still bringin’ it at 42?

Giants did indeed step up and deliver on biggest stage last night. Verlander stellar thru 7 innings and getting final out with RISP in 7th. Chappy & Dom saving run in 4th. McCray likely saving run in 10th with bullet from RF. Solid relief pitching in 8th-10th. And Bailey crushing GS.

Great team win. Super Fri night. On right coast Mets keep floundering. In Sac Reds lose game A’s tried to hand them. Who saw this coming?

15 games left. Would 10-5 finish be enough to snag last WC spot? Mets unbelievably have three SEPARATE 7 game losing streaks this season. Been hot/cold team all year. Which tells me they may have 1 more winning run in them last two weeks. Reds classic example of .500 team all year. But they have 8 games left with lowly A’s, Pirates and Cards. No point in mentioning D’backs or Cards cause Giants have them on schedule and need to win each series or playoffs not possible.

Grind out 10 wins next two weeks and hope 85 wins enough to reach promise land.

Despite only one off day rest of season, by my count Big 3 will start 10 of last 15 games.

in 2014 we headed down the stretch with one legit SP. Verlander’s astonishingly successful second half gives us three this year. What a giant. (Compare snell, last year, btw.)

Another stamp of Posey on last night’s incredible W. Signed him and didn’t deal him away at deadline. Pen guys Lucchesi and Peguero with no hit shutout innings, as did Walker in relief of V. McCray as September call up position player, and of course oft released Dom Smith as waiver pick up in June.

Meanwhile Giants light up Dodgers $72 million closer Scott for walkoff. Surprised at Bailey upper body after uni torn off, wow. And how low key casual he was in postgame. All business out there in his own way.

like Webb V is always working on craft. I think the commitment by individuals and teams in general these days given all the data accounts for lot of dominance by pitchers over hitters today. V mixes in different breaking balls, changes speed and sight lines and still has 95 heat in 7th after 100 pitches. We’ll see another one today in Opie, still successful without big fastball.

What Kershaw is doing is really mystifying. Is his slider *that* much better than Bumgarner’s?

Did not see Willie’s prior acknowledgement.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 13, 2025 at 11:00 am

No idea how he does it either James. Velo on fastball barely low 90s I think. At least he won’t have Belt and Craw to mystify today. I mean, talk about ownage is ownage. Bochy finally sat em.

      • James's avatar James said, on September 13, 2025 at 11:46 am

I think the fastball is often below 90. I still remember the one time in 10+ years Belt really got ahold of one against Kershaw. It settled in the mitt 420 ft away. He laughed afterwards.

Bradshaw like Joe won 4 SBs, but gets little credit mostly cause he was surrounded by all-time greats. Montana’s teams had it all too, didn’t they?

      • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on September 13, 2025 at 7:35 pm

I had a layover in St. Louis when Joe was playing against the 9ers. My ex wife had to explain to the folks around us why I was rooting for both teams when they had the ball.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 13, 2025 at 7:42 pm

The 81 team had no run game. They had like Walter Payton’s cousin or some shit. And Paul Hofer on his last legs. WRs were Freddie Solomon and rook Dwight Clark.

But they drafted their defensive backfield in Lott, Williamson, and Wright.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on September 13, 2025 at 7:47 pm

Tough to win with no run game in that era…

Melvin wears this one. The dude has to manage like every game is a playoff game. Clearly, Webb didn’t have it tonight. Around 90 pitches through 4 with nearly 10 hits? WTF? So, Melvin let’s him load the bases in the 5th before bringing in the Pen. Bochy would never have let that happen…

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on September 13, 2025 at 7:59 pm

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 13, 2025 at 8:06 pm

I think Bochy pulls him after 4, he’s ready to get hammered otherwise. Bochy brings in the Pen to start a clean 5th. Leaving the bases loaded with Dodgers and no outs for a reliever is manager malpractice IMO. Giants making a comeback now, but they’ve got a big mountain to climb instead of a hill, thanks to Melvin…
