The Party’s Over
Oh well, I guess we are back to pining our hope for success this year on the Giants winning 81 games. Theoretically they could sweep the final home stand with 6 against the lowly Cards and even lower Rox but come on, they suck at home. Maybe they get 2 wins against each? That means they need to some how win 2 more in the final 2 vs AZ and 4 vs LA. Yikes. The Dodgers are gonna have to fall asleep or get swept up by ICE or something for that to happen…….
There is probably a reason for waiting to bring Eldridge up with only 12 games remaining but I’m not sure what it is. Sure has been an up and down season and once again there is lots of work to do in the off-season.
Maybe Dom’s injury played into that decision? 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I don’t see a downside in playing Eldridge. The organization and he get to see him vs. MLB pitching, and what weaknesses and strengths of his game that reveals for future reference.
The truth of the post-season qualifying math after that long stretch of horrible play is working its way through the Giants late season schedule. That, and back to low-hit games and the results of an exhausted, wounded pitching staff. What happened to Birdie — is he so mentally wrecked that they don’t even want to give him a shot at re-tooling even though the staff is a mess in the last hurrah of the schedule?
This is a .500 team at best, it just gets there with frustrating multi-game win and loss streaks. That happens with a wildly inconsistent and talent-challenged position roster. In the off season, so many positions to evaluate and upgrade, somehow…
Really, the pitching has been a bigger fail regardless of how inconsistent the hitting has been.
Devers and Adames both took a while to get acclimated and did well for the most part. The Ramos/Matos experiment has been less than stellar but Gilbert will hopefully catch on.
From Harrison to Whizz to Birdie to Seymour Dingers to Black there just isn’t a hell of a lot to get excited about.
And no RR next season is another dark cloud…
Yeah, they need to find a closer. They sure don’t have one in-house.
The Natural gone at 89…
Saw that. Dear old mom loved him and Paul Newman.
Might have to watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid again. Been a while. Met him in Sun Valley some time in the mid 70s.
RIP to RR.
3 Days Of The Condor. Very underrated spy thriller.
Loved the book. oved the movie.
Eddie Giacomin was a crusher to ancient Ranger fans. Not many all time greats left who played at least a few years in the 60’s. Koufax, Marichal, The Big O, Kareem (almost all in college), Bobby Orr, Esposito, Bench off the top of my head…
Lance Alworth! Clearly doesn’t have the name recognition and I have absolutely no idea why I thought of him, but was pleased to see only a single date under his name.
Those AFL WRs were my fave growing up. Alworth, Otis Taylor, Freddie B, Don Maynard.
Paul Warfield’s still alive I’m glad to say. Was a little pissed off Alworth signed with the Cowboys.
We got Danny Abramowicz from the Saints. Who’s still alive.
well, Yaz, at least the last time I checked.
For sure – and Reggie, Carew, Oliva, Torre, Tony Perez, depending on your all-time great standards I guess.
Mets already up 6-1 in the 2nd…
Read through obit tributes to Ken Dryden in Athletic 10 days ago. Last great run by Canadiens.
Padres at Mets. Pads only 2 back of Dogs and couple behind Cubs for home ad in WC. Ain’t over yet. Hopefully pitching rebounds somehow. Shayna Rubin said SF pen over 70 innings from Aug 3 had 3rd best ERA 2.80. Last 3 games they’ve given up 19 runs in 15 innings. ouch. Beck tonight, yikes.
Rodriguez shut Giants out through 6 last week. Beat Dogs and BoSox before that. 1 run/18 IP.
Dreaded LH SP so Flores 1b and Jerar RF in there.
Wilmet makes AZ pay for Carroll missing cutoff.
Coming out hitting tonight.
Putting up 4 in the 1st is huge.
wasn’t that third strike a dead ball when it hit the batter’s foot? Seems like a fuck up.
no matter. Get some more runs.
there’s no way 4 runs hold up with how shitty our pitching staff is now. Need 10
Flores got one of them back.
Rod Beck he ain’t. Christ. That was a fucking meat ball. Pretty sad that this is our staff now. We were supposed to have some pitching.
Too hittable, reminds me of Hjelle. 400 ft out by Carroll is still an out. yeow
Straight from the horse’s mouth.
I sit here and say send the runner.
So disappointing that we finally hit like a real MLB team and now we can’t pitch.
Who the F is McDonald? I had to research the guy. I guess the River Cats staff is now becoming the SF Giants staff. Wow…
they need innings . He’s been a starter and Winn has worked a lot lately. Just what I read.
Oh well. These pitchers we are trotting out are flat awful.
Why is it that it is always the other team that does aggressive, smart baserunning like Marte just did and surprised Li to take second on essentially what should have been a long single?
Hey, Devers did it in the 1st tagging on the throw to home. He ended up scoring.
I wasn’t around for the early game. For once, we had good, smart baserunning? I stand corrected.
Joey Buttofucco somehow got out of that. They got him out at 1st anyway.
“I’m up on a tight wire
Flanked by life and the funeral pyre
Putting on a show for you to see”
Walker for 4 outs?
HBP right away, it’ll be a challenge just getting one.
He did it!
Thank you, Schmitt.
take that! Dead ball. Start over.
nice play by Schmitt!
wow Schmitt saved Walker there
Jesus. Walker has completely fallen off the table.
Hooooooo. Schmitty is looking pretty good at 2nd.
So, what are the odds Walker can avoid hitting or walking at least one batter?
Well a hit AND a walk allowed to get things rolling…
Rough night for Lee, now 0-17.
Dammit Walker, I’ve seen this too many times.
Oh boy. What a shit show.
Uh, maybe Schmitt forgot he has to have his foot on the bag to record a force out? OMG…
RIght when I say something good about him.
I think about 5 pitchers belong on this staff. The rest can go pound sand.
This guy is hitting a buck 40, strike him out.
This one was over the second Walker took the mound. The only thing he closes is wins for the opposition…
Fuck me. Dats it.
That about does it for any WC hopes. Unless the Giants can win about 10 in a row, and the other WC teams crater…
Walker must lead MLB in 9th-inning losses without getting an out.
From the current 40 man roster, some of the changes next year will be forced and some will be the ol’ change of scenery type moves. Needs will be INF/C bench guys, non-platoon RF, relief pitching and a starter.
Why is Symour not pitching? Hurt? has to be better than beck and the rags were through out today. Such a bummer
They all suck.
Other than Walker, Giants bullpen was outstanding, with the Snakes coming up snake eyes when they had runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and eighth.
Giants offense wears this one as much as Walker imo. Why? Az pitchers retired their final 14 batters without allowing a baserunner . . . zzz
Blade is spot on. Knocked Rodriguez around face planted vs. DBax pen. Knizner had as many hits (1) as Devers Adames Chapman and Lee combined.
Bad Giants showed up last night. Yeah, pitching sucked, but Keystone Kops defense again. Schmitt at 2nd seems a band aid experiment — trade him away to get a real 2nd baseman? Is Matos gone for good, I guess they’ve seen enough that the last two weeks of the season he doesn’t need to play anymore — No options heading into next year.
Looking objectively, this Giants outfield is just not nearly good enough. Ramos is a defensive train wreck. Li is OK, just OK, and not really value for the $ expended. Right is still an unknown heading into the offseason. Compare it to the Snakes’ outfield. Like comparing a yugo to a Viper. The Giants should always have an outfield to fit Oracle — fast, quick, athletic, line drive LH hitters for doubles and triples, and power RH bats to hit to left. I don’t know why they haven’t figured that out after 25 years of the ballpark…
You and me both. Like the old Cards when they played on their superfast astroturf. ET McGee, Coleman, and whoever the fuck else. They would hit groundball triples all the time.
Similar to what you said snarkk, Ramos is a poor fielder – we need to “hide” him some where, but the only 2 places (1st base and DH) are taken. Regardless, the Giants “should always have an outfield to fit Oracle – fast, quick, athletic . . .” Right now, we don’t. Good riddance to Matos. Schmitt??? I don’t know, as I have not watched the last 20 games, except the one last night, so don’t know if he’s improved or not???
He’s inconsistent. He makes a lot of plays but then botches them. Like not standing on the bag on the bunt.
The DBax 2 best OFs, McCarthy and Thomas, are worse hitters than Lee and Ramos by wide margin. Yes they made 2 outstanding plays last night. McCarthy OPS is .590, Bailey range and Thomas is at .665–80 points less than Lee and Ramos. They hit at bottom of the order can do that because they have other good hitters like Marte Carroll that also run well. Most of season we’ve complained about lack of offense, and I don’t want to see much more of McCray (speed and D guy) at the plate… Idk where you guys think Posey is finding an entire OF and pitching in the offseason.
My guess–it ain’t happening, like firing Melvin and rest of coaching staff.
Chapman has gone public with a kind of PO’d attitude at the Oracle groundskeeper. Something about the dirt around 3rd base not being up to snuff. The groundskeeper basically says he’s been doing it the same way for 18 years, doing the best he can with the conditions presented. Why does Chapman even make this public, jamming up a guy that makes probably 1/100 of what he makes? How about keeping that in-house and focusing instead on maybe hitting at least .245 ? Looks like bush league excuse peddling and scapegoating …

maybe it’s his Tourette’s talking. And who knows what’s been said behind the scenes over the past two seasons. I usually can’t read the comical though becz I refuse to give that rag money to pierce the paywall. So maybe that’s developed in the piece. Still, I want his hands and arms etc in good shape. Soften the dirt if that’s what he wants. What’s the big deal?
Come on, man. It’s $0.99 a month. When the year is up, cancel it, and they offer the $0.99 again.
fuck em.
what mediocre music that is
I never understood why people worshipped the dead while The Band was still together. The contrast seemed devastating to me.
Devastating? Really? A lot of folks feel, including his former band members, that Robbie Robertson was a prima donna asshole, and that Jerry was the nicest guy in the world.
Danko, Helm and Hudson were all outstanding. Loved the Band except for Robbie. His preening for the cameras and woe-is-me tales were very off-putting in that movie. Plus he hoarded all the song rights. They called themselves The Band, but in Robbie’s head, it was all him.
Some folks get the Dead, some don’t. Some prefer Skynyrd to the Allman Bros. To each his own.
I saw the Dead a bunch, mainly because I had a bunch of friends that dug them, and the shows were usually a blast. I didn’t go any further than Oregon to see them but I had some friends that went to Europe/east coast/Chicago wherever to see them. Crazy? Sure. But to call them mediocre is pretty silly.
That particular song actually sucks.
The Giants don’t have have a single player with an OPS over 800. The regulars all have park adjusted OPSs that are above league average, Bailey and RF excepted. Webb leads the league in hits allowed, Ray in walks. They’re B+ starters. The Giants’ best players are not top tier and the rest of the roster isn’t strong enough to compensate. This is not a young team, and I’m not particularly hopeful for next year. It’d be nice to see Eldridge hit a few bombs before the season ends.
KNBR said an interesting stat — the Giants are basically 250-250 over the last 500 games. Under known conditions, there is no reason to be hopeful for next season to be much different than this one. Posey will have to do good work just to rebuild the staff to be decent. The supposed strength of the farm is in the low minors (SJose won the Cal League championship last night), so if that is even half true, the cavalry is two seasons away, at minimum. Unless, the lower minors are by wide league consensus loaded and Posey can trade some of that future cavalry for productive, current major leaguers ….
Cavalry or calvary?
Call the cavalry to ride to the rescue, else pray to the cross on Calvary hill…
Giants now hitless in their last 10 innings.
wow nice grab by Gilbert deep drive CF by Moreno.
We’ve been no-hit for the past 10 innings.
now 11.
Another nice catch by Gilbert.
Got to love Gibby Gilbert out there in CF.
Gilbert gets the 1st hit!
Somewhere, Harvey Haddix is applauding…
Sure didn’t see Verlie as the guy coming down the stretch but he’s out-pitching everyone. And the offense is the usual piss-poor performance for him.
Too bad it wasn’t a 2-year deal cuz he’ll fly like the wind after this year.
Barring a miracle run and playoff berth.
Dang kid stung that, right in front of 407 sign .
Eldridge looks like he’ll fit right in hitting at Oracle.
That’s it Bailey. GET MAD! Pfffttt by way of Pfaadt. lqtm
By the by, I found a stream as good as StreamEast . . . Called TheTVApp
Worked first time. Thanks, Blade!
Any time Loo 🙂
2 hits
2 DPs
For once, Walker escapes his own mess.
Didn’t think Walker was gonna get out of that one unscathed. Onto 10th
Devers will put up .800 plus OPS every season for a while. We need a LF who will do the same. Chapman and Adames are solid and Lee is fine. Add Eldridge to improve DH (his easy swing CF wall scraping drives show far more than warning track power, so far). Pitching will be the problem to solve.
Eldridge doesn’t look lost. Just don’t want to see impressive charts showing his outs at Oracle that would be bombs elsewhere. Sure, Devers could and should be better than he’s shown over half a season.
That will work but you gotta get another one as visiting team.
Koss drives in a pair!
Flaco Koss comes through !
Good deal – Giants winning this one with an exclamation point! Doesn’t look like we’ll be swept.
Props to McCray for sac fly off fastball at 100.
Peguero wraps it up and Flavor one W closer to collecting.
Had ’em all the way.
Weird game, nice win. SF hanging by a thread in the WC “race”.
Verlander must wonder what sins he committed to pitch for this team that doesn’t score nor often plays D for him. About October 3 he’s outta here in a blur to spend next season with a contender that has a dependable, scoring offense…
Gilbert wins the glove battle, if there was one, with Matos, and with Encarnacion. He may be a better defender than CHLee. Better arm, certainly …
Ironically, Encarnacion looks like he could be a more dependable OFer than Ramos.
Could be. I think Posey has to be happy so far with at least couple of young OFs, plus Schmitt at 2b and Koss as backup IF. First full season for Lee and Ramos, both of whom I’d imagine aren’t happy with total results and would endeavor to improve. Let em play and fight it out, plus Jerar. Fleming said that was McCray first AB in long time, and made good.
Machado with slam top 5. 6-2 Padres.
A bummer to realize we are going to miss the playoffs because we gave up at the deadline:(
I disagree no hope for next year. Schmidt IS improving. his swing and miss improving every month this year. Devers has shown he can hit again. Adames too.
Bullpen is easier to improve. Not a guarantee but look how much more hope we had now vs a month ago?
If Gilbert works out, it was totally worth it.
