A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Old Man Strength

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 18, 2025

After all the shit Verlander took this season, some of it deserved, it’s wild to now consider that he’s been our best pitcher in September. 42 years old and absolutely slayin’ it down the stretch. How does he do it? Why can’t our other much younger pitchers do this?

    Daddy’s little helper

He’s always had the velo, now he’s mixing and matching off speed stuff and always tinkering. Master of his craft and role model for everyone. Might not stick around but hella get by POBO.

They should learn a lesson from the 49ers and sign these reclamation guys to 2 year contracts. The Niners lost out on Sam Darnold this way. He walked and signed with Minn. They got a 7th round comp (Connor Colby, who very well may be the LG of the future) pick when they could have gotten a bunch if he was on a 2 year deal.

Which is why they signed Jac Mones to a 2 year contract. He will be trade bait by the end of the season.

    Well he was near 43
    You know what I mean
And the way he pitched was way beyond compare
Now how can he sign with another — Wooo!
    When I saw Verlander there.

I’d like to see us bring back JV, maybe in a player/coach role. And, I’d kinda like us to sign Tyler Roger’s again. I think he was good Giant.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 18, 2025 at 12:23 pm

I think they will do what they can within reason to get Rogers back.

      Verlie is a different story.

      He’s Blake Snell 2.0.

He’s gonna cash in one more gigantuar contract.

Here? Doubtful. The team pissed away at least 6 wins for him. Would a better team here make him stay? I guess it’s in the realm of possibility.

      • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on September 18, 2025 at 1:25 pm

speaking of Snell … damn impressive 12K performance by him against Phillies lineup last night.

Yeah, saw that. Can’t say I don’t miss the guy.

Verlander isn’t going anywhere. It was a fucking fluke that prevented him from getting a win for weeks (if not months) on end.

Bottom line? He LOVES Oracle Park! He would be a fucking idiot to go elsewhere, particularly any team with a Park Factor greater than 1.000 . . . Buster will convince him of this.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 18, 2025 at 12:35 pm

Money? Verlander is old school. He could give 2 shits about money. He strikes me as someone who is all about being the best at what he does.

man, I love that! I really hope you are right.

blade, he wants wins. I think he’s smart enough to know there is no way the Giants can guarantee enough run support and defense to help him get wins next season. This campaign has been a total disaster for him from that perspective. A season’s worth of arm wear and tear for half a handful of wins is exactly what he did not want…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 18, 2025 at 4:34 pm

He’s still long way from 300 at 265. Peralta leads NL this season with 17. Next 9 guys have 14 (3) and 13. Even if he were among the league best it’s still taking him 3 years to get there.

You could be right, and lot of fans feel this way, but it’s hard to argue there’s many better places to pitch than here.

I was skeptical about Verlander and about posey as brand new POBO but I’ve changed my mind. Look at last night–V shutting down DBax, great D in CF from Gilbert (trade) and Koss (guy they kept over Fitzy and Wisely) who also got clutch hit, and play of finally healthy Encarnacion who they hung onto while sending Matos back down. He had nice grab and clutch knock. these are all Posey guys and here they are contributing down stretch.

Jerar was a zaidi signing. Fairly early last year.

Webb came in 2nd NL for Ks, behind only Skenes. Keep racking them up!

Kuiper is right. After Yamamoto got ahead with fastball at bottom of zone all he saw was 3 splits

That Chapman K might be the worst swing of the season.

  19. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on September 18, 2025 at 9:51 pm

Shit. 10 walks and can’t buy a hit. Dropped by bailey a killer

  20. Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on September 18, 2025 at 9:52 pm

Just another hit, two total, could have won that game.

was the Eldridge drive to RF the giants best ball in play ? He’s going to be fine, I think. His swing is smooth and easy and as powerful as advertised. Needs to lay off the soft stuff out of the zone, obviously. I’m not sure any of his teammates can help him with that.

Giants’ bats have been silenced repeatedly this year. While offensive stats look better last 4-6 weeks, there have been recurring stretches all year where Giants are limited to 1 or 2 runs.

Buster has built good foundation but needs to continue roster reconstruction in offseason. Giants able to compete with elite teams for stretches but over course of full season less talent and lack of depth rears its ugly head.

As for last nine games, I fear it’s going to be an inexorable slog toward another unsatisfying finish to year.
