A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Sweep the Weekend

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 20, 2025

Why not? With a 0.2% chance of making the playoffs it’s time for our boys to go on one of their patented stress-free runs. 81 wins is still on the table but it’s getting more and more unlikely. Good time for Adames to knock out 29 and 30…..

Dinner with San Dawg at Original Joe’s tonight and then golf at Lincoln Park on Sunday.

Factoring tiebreaker 5 games behind Mets, 3 behind Reds, 2 behind D-Backs with 8 to play? Would take highly improbable inside straight to make playoffs. Not even Godfather of Poker could snatch this victory from jaws of defeat.

Past two nights in Hollywood have sealed deal. Stick a fork in it. Season over. For me last 8 games will be inexorable slog to finish line reminiscent of recent unsatisfying ends to seasons.

I’m not all pessimistic. I believe Buster has built foundational base with Devers, Chappy, Adames and Lee. Another year ahead with Webb & Ray (though it should be noted both regressed somewhat second half of 2025 season). But the roster reconstruction must continue in earnest this offseason. Still too many holes in everyday lineup, lack of starting pitching depth and need to identify closer in 2026.

Glad Buster is at helm of ship but more work is required to level playing field with Dodgers and even Padres. Can’t focus on payroll disparities. Must forge ahead.

Among other things Baggs mentioned in TA was Giants record vs. other 3 good teams in Division: 3-10 vs. SD 6-7 vs. AZ 3-8 vs. LA for total of 12-25. Overall Padres aren’t much better scoring team than Giants but pitching is better. Both of others can hit and score. How to beat them?

I’m glad too that Buster is in charge. Bums are in the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season. They did it with one arm tied behind their back, as most of their pitching staff was injured/struggled for much of this season. Let these 2 facts sink in for a minute . . .

In other words, unless the Giants are going to spend an ungodly amount of money in the off season (bombshell revelation – “keep dreaming”), they’re not our competition. Or, more specifically, the Division title isn’t likely in our cards next season. Basically, we’re in competition for the 2 wild card slots. That’s our reality, but go ahead and keep dreaming if you think otherwise.

Yep, Buster has a lot of work in the off season.

Craig, sounds like a great weekend. When I lived in the city, golfing at Lincoln Park was one of the most simple pleasures ever…. enjoy!

Hopefully the Giants can salvage some dignity and win at least one of the last two with LA, as the season Phhhtttts away like a leaky bike tire. As blade noted so well above, the talent chasm between the two organizations is big, huge even. LA is a juggernaut, it has the money and strength of purpose and successful organization/development infrastructure to continue to dominate for years to come, even when faced with lots of injuries. It’s won what — 12 of 13 or 13 of 14 of the last NL West division titles? Whatever, the domination is no accident, and neither is the Giants being in the post season just 2 of the last 11 seasons — an objectively piss poor record post 3 in 5.. Posey hopefully has the freedom to do what needs be done.

First thing, Melvin needs to go, and his crony coaches, be they ex-SF vets or not. The disastrous July-August cratering cannot be white washed. Reality tells me he’ll punt, unfortunately, and keep Melvin under condition some or most of the coaches get replaced. Get an outside-the-org field management team who question current practices, and demand smart play and batting approaches to cut down on Ks. Then, work with the new field management to do an honest and complete eval of the farm system development methods and operations. The horrific play during that cratering streak tells us that something has been rotten on the farm as to REGULARLY producing MLB-ready position players, whether they are home grown or imported. Guys like Koss, Matos, Wisely, Fitz, Meckler, Slater, Duggar et al, just aren’t good enough to merit supposedly big contributory roles. Luciano, a supposed can’t miss, still hanging around with no position after 6+ years in the minors is a prime example. After all that, I think they have to either cut him in the offseason or get a bag o’ balls for him in trade…

The big 3 salary guys Devers, Adames and Chapman have come up empty down this stretch of 6 losses out of 7 where big guys are supposed to lead and get it done. Ugly numbers at the plate for all 3. No free agent position players worth a crap want to come to SF under any circumstances, unless they get gobs of overpayment (hello Adames). That’s a story as old as Rohand, yet here we still are. So, you have to have good, smart people and a system to ID them, draft them and develop them and consistently have them ready to feed the big club. With as much revenue as the Giants have had since Oracle was built, I don’t understand why they fail in this fundamental effort. I default to the explanation (Greg Johnson gave it away) that ownership just doesn’t care enough. 2 playoffs in 11 years says who they are, and that as long as 2+ million butts show up at Oracle in a season, ownership is content with mediocrity or worse at the end of 162…

The Valkyries were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs after a tough one-point loss. Their head coach did win the coach of the year award, which was a highly-deserved award.

The Fever, despite missing Clark and some other injured players, survived the first round, and will take on the Aces in the semis, who have the best player in the league, Wilson.

    Eldridge is off and running.

Good looking pop to oppo field, as reported. Looks like a taller version of Belt. He first started out hitting a lot to left center. I remember one in particular he hit at Joe Robbie was out there into left center. Would have been a prodigious blast for a right hander. Eldridge hopefully doesn’t take as many hittable pitches as Belt…

lol . . . For example, Adames and the Giants get a “gift” from the umpire review crew in NY. Of course, no way, no how, do the Giants cash in.

catching some of the Cal game between innings. That 18 year old quarterback is terrific. His receivers have dropped half a dozen perfect passes. Wonder if he can re enter the portal mid season?
