A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Quest For 81

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 22, 2025

I honestly can’t believe they won that game. After golf, Diggity and I went to have insane tacos at a place I can’t currently remember the name. Blue Something. While we scarfed and settled up our golf bets we watched Sheehan lay waste to our feeble hitters. Watching his K total tick upwards was like watching the National Debt calculator in real time.

And yet some how some way the 8th inning happened and now there is at least a door open to getting to 81. Who’s with me?

Yeah great pitching is only way to slow down Dogs. McDonald was fantastic and eye opener for next year. Lucchesi retired all 4-Ohtani Betts Freeman and Muncy. Outstanding. Onward and upward to 81.

    As per once mighty AP:

“The Giants playoff chances are all but over despite their 2nd win in 9 games”

I must’ve missed something along the line: where did Trevor McDonald come from?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 22, 2025 at 10:15 am

He came up week ago and pitched in relief I think, maybe when Winn got sent down. He’s been SP in Sac.

There must be some up and coming managers out there who would jump at the chance to come to SF. I think the biggest changes need to come from our coaching and scouts. I do have faith in Posey.

As far as I know, SF could have hired Vogt after the 2023 season, after Farhan had CYA fired Kapler. He was certainly being bandied about as a possibility, as I remember. SF knew him, since he was a former player in 2018 and a team/clubhouse leader. It would have been a bold move to hire a guy under 40 as a first time manager, so of course they chose Melvin instead. So, Vogt goes out and manages Cleveland into the 2024 playoffs. And, has them again in the hunt this week to win the AL Central in head to head series with Detroit, else likely a WC spot at worst…

Vogt was the guy I wanted. As you said, he was a good player for the Giants.

I didn’t know this detail: Bochy has a 1052-1054 record as the Giants manager.

He’s still under .500 all time, all teams = 2,250W – 2,262L or .499. Chances look good he’ll go into the HOF as a below .500 career manager…

With this schizo team, Giants getting to .500 is impossible to predict. For me, the series in St Louis this month was the turning point. After sweeping Rox in Sherpa-vill we wiped the floor with the Cards in game #1. Then came the consecutive one run loses (game #2, Walker’s BS; game #3, Teng walking 3 and unable to finish 5th, Butto giving it up). Ugh! Heartbreaking!!

pitching is the most serious renovation Buster faces, and a .800+ ops LF would be good, but Bailey’s a unique challenge. There’s the weak O offset by the great D reflected in stats like these i link. Then there’s the chronically dropped balls on plays at the plate that Buster will remember as clearly as do we. Does the eyeball test nullify much of that offset?

also, I won’t be surprised to see Bailey emerge as a very accurate challenger to ump mistakes when the ABS system or whatever it’s called arrives.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 22, 2025 at 10:24 am

Agree on pitching as first priority…idk if Verlander would return; thankfully he’s been great down stretch. I think given long term $$ commanded by 3 vets, Posey isn’t spending much more on hitters and will try and roll with younger players he already has including Bailey Schmitt Lee and Koss. Biggest issue is what to do with Dom smith–if they keep him there’s only room for 4 OFs.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 22, 2025 at 10:35 am

I like Dom a lot. But Eldridge really is developing well.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 22, 2025 at 10:47 am

Neither Webb nor Ray has consistently been ace-like. Add an ace and re-sign Verlander as a four or five. And yes, open the coffers. I think they’ll spend money this winter.

Giants Fan (Peter) had a birthday yesterday. I know this because I got notified about that via FB. He either bailed from FB or passed away, as there are NO NOTIFICATIONS RECENTLY other than the one I posted in July of 2023, citing our epic East Coast trip in July of 2016. Weird.

I last saw Peter in 2022, when a buddy of mine and I saw the Giants play at Oracle. He was sitting in CF with some other buddies. Hope he’s doing okay.

Today, I confirmed that the shaking intensity tops out after 6 and it’s the number of minutes as the magnitude goes up. I’m clinging to that.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 22, 2025 at 9:45 pm

Some old frame homes can contort like hell and pop back into shape afterward. I hear.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 23, 2025 at 5:49 am

It doesn’t sound like you were living in the SF Bay Area when the ’89 earthquake occurred, but you’re correct – basically, the shaking intensity does not increase/decrease, but just goes on and on and on “. . . as the magnitude goes up.” Both my ex-wife (fiance at the time) and I were looking at each other, with her laughing at first – she was located by the dining room hutch and I under a doorway – where her laughter turned to tears. Ironically (in reference to your “minutes” comment, the Loma Prieta ‘quake only lasted 15 seconds. Our perception at the time, indicated at least 30-40 seconds. However, per AI, the longest recorded earthquake in history is the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake that occurred on December 26, 2004. This massive magnitude 9.1 earthquake, which triggered a devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean, had a fault rupture that lasted an astonishing 500 to 600 seconds (over 8 to 10 minutes).
