A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Another Collapse

I’m starting to think that Ryan Walker isn’t a very reliable closer….lol.

This year was brutal. 10 games over, trade for Devers, go 15 games under the rest of the way. Outrageous.

Elimination game perfectly reflected the second half stuttering nosedive . Crash and burn well short of the runway. The entire pitching staff needs to be rebuilt.

What you and Flavor described with brevity? Is to the point and 100% accurate . . . Anyone that disagrees is delusional. This season was a shit sandwich.

Kruk just said on KNBR that the entire pitching staff just ran out of gas. Maybe. There are some young arms on that staff. But it an entire staff collapse nothing more than running out of gas? Isn’t there some responsibility to be taken by these guys? Shit they all know how long the season is……

Peguero was only one not torched. Cards have had awful time hitting and scoring all season, til they came here. Sigh 8 runs wasn’t enough.

It would have bugged me if the Giants had won it in the 9th, because I didn’t want to see Walker get the W. That’s pretty weird.

Who knew Tyler Rogers was this important to the clubhouse vibe?

Meanwhile, Cleveland’s staff is pitching out of their minds at the end of the season.

We’ll get him back. If Gilbert sticks that would be a pretty sweet deal.

It was great hearing from Blade yday and hearing of DracuLoo’s well wishes. I have tried to post a number of times and then WordPress wont log me in or just did again twice now on my mobile that when I start typing a couple of sentences, it automatically deletes the comment before I could post anything. Is WordPress run by the FCC Chairman?? Fun fact, the FCC Chairman Brendan Carr is a former colleague of mine my old law firm…so then tried to log in on my desktop and that took me about 10 tries to get it to accept a password (so then had to reset it on my mobile and then now trying to post on desktop. The WordPress overlords apparently dont like any criticism…

frustrating season and was quite excited when we added Devers but then

OK that post seemed to go through…hallelujah…after we added Devers I thought it would turn things around and then we immediately went into offensive doldrums. I tried to post then and gave up and then right before the trade deadline I was trying to post that we needed to pursuer Shane Bieber at all costs because I thought then and know now very clearly we dont have a clear #1 go to starter. The last 10 days have been some of the most frustrating moments since being a Giants fan. That Saturday game against the Flodgers at home against Kershaw where we jump out to a lead and Webb just implodes. We had just caught the Mets earlier in the day and immediately blew that opportunity and with our #1 Webb going.

I was actually on a trip to Montana with 9 of my SJSU fraternity boys for a guy’s trip. So since then it has been a complete meltdown. Seeing what the pen has done especially the last couple of days is so damn frustrating to watch. We need to go after Bieber at all costs this offseason. Webb has disappointed me not being the dominant Bumgarner that we need. I wont give Ray too much grief since this is the most he has pitched in years. So not on him and Melvin is not to blame IMO. I think he was given a thin deck to deal with with the pitching staff this second half and the improbable pen collapse did not help. Walker is so god damn frustrating to watch. At least our offensive pieces had finally clicked into place post trade deadline.

Finally, what are the Flap’s thoughts of them bringing our Virginia boy Eldridge up? I thought I was able to post here when we saw him at AA in Richmond early in the season and we got to meet him and the boys got some autographs. And I love giving a young player a shot, but in the middle of a playoff push and being thrown right into the fire may have not been the right call. Thougths?

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 24, 2025 at 10:16 am

Eldridge didn’t move the needle one way or the other. I ALWAYS think it’s a good idea to at least let the kids come up and get a taste of the majors, esp during the September call-ups.

Even though fucking Manfred ruined the whole idea by cutting it down to 2 players, it’s not like Bryce took a spot from someone else doing anything great.

      • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2025 at 10:39 am

I dont understand why mess with Matos. He was really swinging well and hard. I’m just worried what pressure can do to a 20 year old’s confidence. I have confidence he will be the starter at first next year. But Matos constantly messed it. Have they (we) given up on Luciano?

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 24, 2025 at 10:09 am

Webb is only 28, but but next season will be his 13th in our system.

Got to wonder if he’s aging prematurely mainly because he usually leads the league in innings pitched and starts.

Doesn’t really make sense when you see guys even 15 years ago going 250 IP per season.

Ray just got bit by the lack of hitting and went 4-8 after his 7-0 start. But he’s 34 next year.

I don’t know. Peguero looks really good in the pen, but Walker has fallen off a cliff, Beck, Seymour Homers, Wu-Teng, Gage, Hjelle, Birdie, and Whizz are all mediocre and those guys really need to get better or go.

Miller and Roupp looked good before they went to the IR. Lucky Lucchesi is fine. If they are good to go next year, we got 3 starters, and Peguero and Miller in the pen. Get 2 SPs, Rogers back, 3 RPs, and a closer. No prob.

    • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2025 at 10:14 am

Didnt they get rid of Hjelle after the spousal abuse accusations? We need Bieber and make sure he does not go to LA or SD…would he have saved our season this year? He has pitched well for the Blue Jays. I’m rooting for the Reds to beat out the Mets…I was hoping to see a Brewers-Blue Jays World Series…lets see how MIL does first round of the playoffs. after the wild card…

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 24, 2025 at 10:17 am

No, Hjelle’s with the RiverCats. He cleared waivers and was outrighted to Sacto.

      • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2025 at 10:36 am

Thanks. I thought after they waived him and the cloud over him they would just let him go…

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 24, 2025 at 11:37 am

both aces often pitched more like jokers down the stretch, all three closers crapped out (RR obviously worst, w/ tj) and only a few pen guys did well. Whizz and Birdsong are as mediocre as a Grateful Dead jug band tune. No prob.

KNBR morning and afternoon jockeys essentially asking Buster to fire Melvin and most if not all the field coaches…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 24, 2025 at 4:37 pm

Part of it is they are interpreting Webb’s recent interview saying that the team had enough talent to win (in his opinion. the most the team has had while he has been with the big club) as an indictment of Melvin. I think Webb has said subsequently he didn’t mean that, but that’s one logical translation of what he said…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 24, 2025 at 6:12 pm

Only Posey opinion matters. Despite injuries to pitching they played meaningful baseball for long time and attendance is up.

    • James's avatar James said, on September 24, 2025 at 6:29 pm

Posey should concentrate on solving what looks like a pretty complex roster puzzle, despite (or maybe because of) the long term deals. This team could go completely down the shitter next year with the current players. Melvin is irrelevant.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 24, 2025 at 6:33 pm

That’s a simplistic take. Melvin has jerked the lineup around and basically stood around while shit fell apart.

I think Kapler would have gotten more out of this team.

      • James's avatar James said, on September 24, 2025 at 6:48 pm

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 24, 2025 at 7:22 pm

Nothing more simplistic than KNBR. Putting logical and them in same post defies logic.

I really don’t care who manager is but I’d be surprised Posey makes change.

  13. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 24, 2025 at 6:47 pm

Agree with snarkk and unc – Melvin and his coaches set the tone; make out the LU; coach the players before/during the game; determine pitching changes; counsel players and/or the team when needed; and, probably myriad other things were not aware of.

Frankly, almost all of them deserve F grades, particularly after we had such a fantastic spring training and first 2 months of the season. Only exception (echoing AK) is the pitching coach.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 24, 2025 at 6:57 pm

KNBR played a tape today of Webb saying pretty much the same thing about talent and lack of wins almost exactly two years ago, a few days before Farhan fired Kappler. Weird, or coincidence? Either way, it shows the Giants are generating the same results with different captains in the view of a top player and team leader — not a good thing…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 24, 2025 at 7:05 pm

Melvin showed me he had communication/discipline issues when he (1) did nothing visible, did not bench Ramos even for a game after that series of ugly defense and egregious base-running miscues Ramos pulled during “the cratering” period and (2) turned his back on Adames in the dugout when Adames was obviously jawing at him, unhappy about something (I never did see any reported story of what that was about)…

Somewhat related to what Flav posted at the beginning of this thread, where he said, “This year was brutal. 10 games over, trade for Devers, go 15 games under the rest of the way. Outrageous.”

I am flummoxed or bewildered too how this team stinks after we got Devers . . . He sure as fuck isn’t the reason.

Maybe Yaz was the super secret glue guy, and when he got dealt, chaos ensued. Who knew?…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 24, 2025 at 9:08 pm

Ironically snarkk, you probably are right – I just looked up Yaz’s WAR (while researching Dever’s stats, including WAR) and Yaz was 1.7 WAR for the Giants before being dealt.

Skenes 7 K’s today. Luzardo 10. With Webb 3 way tie for NL K lead at 216. Now we need 2 homers from Adames! A homer from Edridge would be nice too.

Article on Eldridge in Athletic He was 1/17 but has ave exit velocity of 100+. 110mph 2B today. Stupid small sample size but that number would lead all of baseball. by 5 mph over Judge. Some hope:)

  16. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on September 24, 2025 at 8:16 pm

Re Devers and not being his fault… it kinda was. Hitters expected a lift and what they got was a 1 month stretch of him being one of the worst hitters in all MLB. .200 ave with no power and crazy K% of 1/3 of his AB’s. Coincided with our stretch of losses that blew it for us. I forgive him now though:)

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 24, 2025 at 9:05 pm

Sorry, I don’t entirely buy that . . . as 9 players are on the field. I guess they all collectively thought, “Hey, we can take a break now that Devers is here?” Consequently, I asked AI this question, “Since Devers joined the Giants, his WAR is 1.4 . . . In ONLY the time he has been with the Giants, whom are the 1, 2, and 3 players in the WAR stat only?” “

Answer: 1. Heliot Ramos 1.5 WAR; 2. Logan Webb 1.5 WAR; and, 3. Rafael Devers 1.4

I asked how did the next 3 in WAR do? The next 3 were Adames at 1.3 WAR, Estrada at 1.2 WAR, and Lee at 1.1 WAR

Anyway, my point is that out of all these guys, I have much, much more confidence that Devers will be the leader going forward next year, versus Ramos, Webb, Adames and certainly, Chapman, whom has been missing in action for much of the latter part of the season.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on September 25, 2025 at 6:15 am

Sometimes change is good just for sake of change. All I know is there was quite a big stretch where this team was pretty much unwatchable. Really whoever’s fault it was at this point makes little difference. The FO is gonna have to figure it out though otherwise we will be here again next year.
