A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Honestly I’m Glad It’s Over

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 29, 2025

What a maddening season. We missed the playoffs by 2 games. I didn’t look it up but didn’t Walker blow like 7 games in the second half? The Giants have obvious holes starting with a shredded bullpen and a pitching staff that is completely out of gas. They need to look at how and why that happened since it didn’t seem to happen to any of the teams that made the post season….

At least they got to 81 wins. Goddamn did I talk about that enough over the last 2 months? lol. I fist pumped that final K pretty hard and in that moment it felt like we’d won something. That was fun and satisfying.

Yeah, good to see Buster do the deed. Kinda wanted it earlier, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

Shit, between Doval and Walker’s collective failures, we could have 8-10 more wins.

  4. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 29, 2025 at 10:56 am

IMO, the key thing Buster must do is hire from the OUTSIDE. Get a fresh set of eyes on this organization to evaluate how it operates, how it teaches, and how it develops players. Make the needed changes. Make people uncomfortable. Get rid of the ossified approaches. It isn’t working. The team played bad ball most of the season. Errors, mental mistakes all over the place, stupid approaches at the plate, blind to situations. That has to end. Enough of this bringing in a field management team full of old Giant retreads and cronies…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 29, 2025 at 1:05 pm

Yeah, they need to start over with the farm, the scouting, and the drafting.

It had yielded very little in the past 15 seasons.

Knowing we missed by 2 games and all the blown saves. Stings a bit! With all that went on I wonder if Posey will get some criticism for selling at the deadline? Having Doval (assuming he didn’t implode like he did in NY) and Rogers (and Rodriquez used less as he was earlier) we almost certainly make the playoffs…Such a bummer:(

We get a chance to see if the Niners are a good or average team Thursday. Rams were gifted the win yesterday by 2 bonehead plays yesterday by the same guy. They have holes like we do. Go Niners!

  8. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin said, on September 29, 2025 at 11:42 am

As far as I am concerned, they need to fire the entire scouting department, the Giants had to get someone from free agency to be able to hit 30 homers, they haven’t had a gold glove outfielder since 1986 I think, don’t remember if Bonds got one. Now we have only one possible power hitter in Eldridge. Who are the scouts looking at? 50 years of ineptitude. Just awful

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 29, 2025 at 12:06 pm

From what little we saw of Eldridge, I’m not sure about him at all. Yeah, when he squares it up, it goes. But, how many Ks is he going to suffer? 35% K rate? Higher? I’ve said before, history tells me to be dubious about a guy this tall, and his short time up didn’t remove that. Plus, ahead of him at 1b is Devers, and Dom Smith, who I hope they give a 2 year deal — great contact hitter, which is what they need. So, is Eldridge at 21 going to be the primary DH ? If he turns out to be an Adam Dunn type power dude, then I’d be OK with it…

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on September 29, 2025 at 12:38 pm

Very limited sample obviously, but I don’t think Eldridge got anyone overly excited. Adam Dunn hit 462 homers and had a 4 year stretch of hitting exactly 40 on the nose…

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 29, 2025 at 1:11 pm

The kid is only 20 and he’ll get better as he progresses. Hopefully. if he hits 30+ and drives in 90+, he can strike out 225 times for all I care.

Eldridge is gonna be DH. Devers at 1st. Dom needs to figure out how to play the OF.

Really that’s all we got now.

It’s gonna be interesting to see what Posey ends up doing and how much rope ownership will give him. Lots of things need fixing within the org. and our minor league system should be our #1 priority imo.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 29, 2025 at 1:08 pm

So far, I’m encouraged. They’ve let Buster go after Chappie, Devers and Adames, and fired MoTel (I’ll turn the light out) Sux.

I mean, they HAVE to see what the Dodgers and Padres have spent, and know that they have to do something other than break even.

  10. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 29, 2025 at 1:39 pm

Buster is the ONLY one that hasn’t been in a 24/7 coma since he was hired. I am so bored and freakin’ tired of these .500 or below seasons. However, THAT ISN’T HIS FAULT. Dude wakes up every day and is trying to make the team better, e.g., loved his stove pipe and mid-season trades to improve the club.

Eventually, this organization will get his drift – that the last 7 seasons are not acceptable. Like snarkk said earlier, this organization has “ossified.” I have no idea beyond ownership, whom in the organization lived and breathed those 3 championship years besides him – either get those folks back as coaches, executives, support staff . . . or, get folks from organizations winning now. All the vestiges of the last 7 years need to be evaluated and if found wanting, GET RID OF THEM.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on September 29, 2025 at 2:43 pm

We should pilfer some scouts from Cleveland or any team who finds good players. And some coaches who actually teach base running, how to bunt, how to execute a pickoff move, how to catch a fly ball, patience at the plate, that kind of stuff.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 29, 2025 at 2:58 pm

Exactly Winder. Not saying we don’t have those in-house, but why are we so poor on fundamentals of the game?

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 29, 2025 at 3:23 pm

Shit, go after the A’s scouting department. They have done a phenomenal job finding talent for decades. Sure, they trade it away but then they replenish over and over.

Not sure of where you’re heading in NM but sounds like you know your way around the area. Yeah, the southern route through Tombstone, Bisbee, Douglas, means you’d eventually have to loop north quite a distance if you’re heading for any place of (truth or) consequence (ha!) in NM.

The team ERA was 3.5 at the beginning of July. It went up to 3.86 by the end of the year. Team OPS was low 680s on 7/1 and didn’t quite make it to 700. The decline in pitching far outpaced the moderately improved offense, ergo the drop to 500 from 10 games over.

Hope Posey focuses first on re-building the bullpen and the fabled starting pitcher surplus before he reconstructs Giants World.

Baggs did get in a surprising little dig against whatever decision chain resulted in Teng starting multiple games ahead of McDonald. If you look at the basic AAA stats, it’s pretty obvious why they made that choice. But who knows, maybe some crusty ‘ol holdover was ignored trying to steer ’em in the right direction!

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 29, 2025 at 4:36 pm

Yeah Baggs seemed to know what was gonna happen. I’d guess July swoon sealed Melvin’s fate and Melvin wasn’t Posey hire either. Might have guys in mind but can’t announce hire til Series ends. Has to be settled before FA talks begin.

Names I’ve heard are Skip Schumaker (who might take Bochy job if that’s open) and Nic Hundley (advisor in Texas FO), who doesn’t have manager experience.

How much longer for the broadcasters?

Kuiper is 75, Kruk & Miller almost 74…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 29, 2025 at 8:30 pm

They all are “on assignment” pretty regularly. I heard Miller talk in mid-summer on KNBR about how he was gone a couple of weeks this season with his wife on an eco-ship expedition way up to the northern part of Alaska and Arctic ocean. https://www.travelhx.com/en-us/ships/roald-amundsen/. He’s earned his time off, I suppose.

But, why not just retire altogether if you’re going to take a ton of time off during the height of the season, plus not doing some portions of the long roadies?

Kuip seems out of it and bored a lot, wrong players called out, seems to always have a tinge of negativity going on even in good stretches. Seems like an old guy now with a microphone that you wouldn’t want to cross. Krukow still energetic as a person can be with his disability, and more a homer than ever, if that’s possible. He goes from offering pretty good analyses of pitchers to opinions and observations that border on the ludicrous in the face of reality.

At first I didn’t think I liked Joe Ritzo on radio, but he’s growing on me. Just say no to Hunter Pence as a color guy. FP Santangelo is passable, if you can avoid brain damage from some of his stupid “takes”, and his incessant and unfunny self-deprecations…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 29, 2025 at 8:41 pm

As far as Flemming is concerned, I’m assuming he’s come to some understanding with the Giants that he’ll be the team’s top dog announcer when Miller and K&K finally shuffle off. I don’t mind him, don’t love him, either. Can come across once in a while as pompous, but he’s tolerable IMHO…

Appreciate the feedback, Snarkk. In any profession I guess it can be hard to know when to get out, when you’ve stayed too long, when it’s time to give a younger person a chance. Ego, money and not knowing what else to do with yourself are factors…

That’s a pretty good gig. I have no idea what he and Kruk earn. I saw something a while back that said Miller gets $625K/ year. Seems low to me? I assume they are in the same $ neighborhood as Miller. I’ll guess Flemming makes a helluva lot more with his Giants gig combined with all the side gigs he does on football, basketball and golf. I think a lot of Giants fans would keep Kruk and Kuip even if giving them up would generate a guaranteed WS win….

Kuiper said today that he wishes that Kruk be nominated with him as a duo, but the HOF says that is not allowed, or some such. IDK why Kruk would not be nominated, unless this thing is limited to play by play only, not “color”. Another reason the baseball HOF is stupid, nominating Kuiper without Krukow is like eating a plain hot dog at the ballpark, no mustard, no relish — and no beer…

Kruk repeats himself all the time with old school rants, but if I had chance I’d ask him how to prevent all the injuries to pitchers of today. giants had ton of them and they aren’t alone, despite trying to minimize SP innings in minors and resting pen guys to avoid back to backs.
