A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

How to Beat Toronto…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 18, 2010

It’s actually quite simple, just keep the ball in the yard. These guys are free swinging, HR happy monsters. If they don’t hit a bomb? No big deal, head back to the dugout with their .241 average and wait for another chance. It’s safe to say there isn’t much chocking up on the bat or two-strike approach in Toronto. We have smart pitchers, I think our guys will keep them off balance enough to play them tough this weekend (no prediction)….

First game is going to be fun to watch. I’ve followed Brandon Morrow’s career since he was at Cal. Dude has wicked stuff but has arm slot problems. He can be no hitting you for 5 innings and then boom walk the bases loaded. And Zito’s fly ball tendencies probably won’t be tailor made for this park 🙂

Plus we get to see Freddy again. Right now he’s sitting awake in bed wondering if it’s possible to hit a 16 run home run……

On another note, I’m a little suprised that Posey’s not catching tonight. He had a great game behind the plate in Zito’s last start and had the last two days off.

He didn’t catch Zito’s last start, Molina did.

My bad. 2 starts ago. My point remains. When Posey was in the minors, we constantly heard that management didn’t want to brimg him up in fear that it would curtail his development as a catcher. Since he’s been up, he’s only had one start behind the dish even though Molina’s still slumping. Just seems to make sense to play Posey catcher at least once aweek for Zito’s starts and probably Martinez/MadBum as well.

The phantom call against the US in the WCup today suxxx, but baseball isn’t exactly immune to bad reffing. There’s been a spate of blown calls at first the last few weeks among various teams on the TV highlights, and I’m not just talking about the Galaraga perfect game fiasco. Plus, there’s always been the phantom out calls at 2nd on DPs. World Cup is usually damn near unwatchable, so when the refs F Up, it actually adds some needed spice to a boring stew….

There’s very little to bitch about these days so it gets pretty petty. Posey will be taking over behind the plate soon enough. For now, Zito has only had success with Molina this year.

Bottom of the first in DC, Giants on my XM radio, bases loaded Panda up and the crowd starts cheering but nothing is happening on the field.

Crazy how this has been working, and its not the first time recently. Giants send 7 to the plate in the first, score one and then can’t do shit for the next four innings. Two positives is that they did get that run and Morrow’s pitch count is now in the upper 80’s. They need to make their big move in the top of the 6th. Due.

He has zero excuse for either- the premature HR trot cost him 3rd base and the RFer never came close to the other one, he has to read that. If i’m the manager, he sits the rest of the game.

Rowand needs to see some serious pine the rest of the way this season. Then release him in the quiet of the off-season. Eat the rest of the contract. He’s not a major league hitter anymore. Or send him down to AAA and make him work on his swing for a year.

  30. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 18, 2010 at 6:07 pm

  36. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on June 18, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Huff screwed up big time, but didn’t the Giants make the first out at home twice in this game? Some of that’s on Flannery.

  37. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 18, 2010 at 6:23 pm

I just think that being good most of the time shouldn’t exempt a guy from criticism. Juan was horrible today and Huff cost them at least one run and possibly a huge inning.

Uribe and Panda get honorable goat mention.

  46. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 18, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Panda’s ball wasn’t hit “hard.” It was routine for the guy playing the line in that situation.
And what the hell does “CIC” mean?

  47. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 18, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Another one slips away. That first inning fandango set the tone for the loss. Giants had that guy on the ropes, but poor execution cost them. Bottom third of the lineup stunk it up good. Rowand needs to get his thrills from some pine slivers. Couldn’t touch their Bullpen. Maybe one of the three is a pretty good reliever. Zito didn’t deserve to lose this one. LaBumbos being bombed in Boston, but Dagos play the O’s. Back to a game and a half out, with the Dogs at one behind. Staying close doesn’t count. Again, this team shouldda had em in the first, but no sense yet of going for the jugular.

  52. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 18, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Checked the box on LA vs Boston where its currently 10-5 for the Beaners. They started some pitcher i’d never heard of before, not quite Doumit, like for the Bucs or Dubrovnik, like in Dalmatia, but he held the Bums to 3 over five. Meanwhile, the Monasterios experiment is going sour for LA. Boston bopped him bad and also beat up on Troncoso, who was sterling in relief last season. So the Dogs’ rotation is Kuroda, Billingsgate and one pretty decent kid still learning the ropes in Kershaw. But the bottom 2/5ths of their rotation looks like Plan C will soon be needed.

LaBumbos desperately need at least one very good starter and probably also a serviceable one. They may go all out for Cliff Lee. I wonder if they have the livestock on the farm to make it happen. Even if Kemp is still in the doghouse with top-dog it would be a stretch to see them let him go.

  53. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 18, 2010 at 6:53 pm

You can sacrifice all of those goats as far as I’m concerned for tonight. Yep, the two “J’s” coulda opened the flood gates in the first if either got a hit. As Denny Green said, “We let ’em off the hook!”

  54. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 18, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Stix, Billingsley is on the DL. It’s Kershaw, Kuroda, Ely, Monasterios, and Padilla ( due off the DL this weekend)… and they have no money- which is why they didn’t get Lee last year, they couldn’t pay him…

  55. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on June 18, 2010 at 7:33 pm

Hey guys– I missed most of the game– I saw that bullshit 5th inning where Zito gave up two runs on fucking nothing (he could easily have still been throwing a no-no at the end of that inning) and then I saw the last part of the inning where Huff got thrown out at the plate. What I did not understand, and tell me if I’m missing something here, why in the hell was Flannery sending Huff home with no outs when he wasn’t a LOCK to score? I didn’t see the beginning of the inning so maybe I missed something Huff did or didn’t do, but I think that Flannery sending him with no outs was a freaking brain lock. One of the worst “sends” I’ve ever seen from him and he’s had plenty of bad ones…….

  56. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 18, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Twin: I’d spaced Billingsley being on the DL. Spotted the news the other day but my memory glands ain’t always up to all the info out there. Padilla, huh? What amazes me is that the Dogs are still hanging on at all. Seems like a lot of smoke and mirrors to me. That bubble has to burst, particularly if they don’t have the $ for a Lee or at least an Oswalt. The fact that Troncoso is imploding tells me their pen may be close to running on fumes.

  57. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 18, 2010 at 7:46 pm

Flav: Obviously Bochy is enamored with Flannery. Since i haven’t been watching video feeds, all that i know about the situation is secondhand. But you do seem to be right about Flannery doing some dumb sends if my recollections are accurate.

The O’s have an early 1-0 lead on San Diego. With the Dodger loss, something can be salvaged from the Giants’ day.

  59. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 18, 2010 at 8:02 pm

Mets are turning just a bit scary. Takahashi and relievers stifle the Evil Empire and Javier Vasquez four-zip. Yanks definitely have some issues with their pitching staff. Amazing how a team can spend so much money and still be a bit short in the most vital component for team success. Imagine what Zito could do for them. Well, maybe not in tonight’s shutout.

  60. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on June 18, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Stix, with the Braves playing well, too, the East might be the division sending two teams into the playoffs. And speaking of the Braves, they have the most wins in the League, yet have a losing record in their own division, sort of momentarily going against the conventional wisdom of having to do well in your own division to be a playoff team.

  61. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 18, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Zoom: The Braves are getting an amazing season outta Troy Glaus, whom i’d previously written off as close to washed-up. Without his peak performance that team would be just a tiddle above mediocre, if that. One of the amazing things about baseball is that right when you think you have a pretty good handle on things, something surprising happens.

Zum, totally agree. Sf is having a great season, but not in the way I imagined at all. 3 months ago ST winding down, I would not have envisioned any of following:
Torres as every day .300 hitter with pop
Zito with same ERA as Lincecum
Uribe and Huff leading hitters BA HR RBI
Burrell doing more for the team than entire Bowker gang combined

This stuff is too unpredictable for anyone to say “Just as I thought”.
