A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Another Come Back Win Plus Posey Sits….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 23, 2010

How many come back wins do we have this year? 14? 15? It’s something crazy like that. “Crazy” when you compare it to the no-hope line ups from the last couple of years……
Buster sat and that’s fine with me. He’s not hitting anything hard, lots of ground balls—I doubt the brass would send him back down, he’s shown too much to go that route. Hey, he could have just needed an off day….
Pat the Bat *is* the bat we’ve all been wanting. His career has been sprinkled with long hitting droughts and I know Boch is NOT the manager to deal with that since his style is to let a hitter hit themselves out of a slump if it takes all year! Wait ’em out through THE NEXT year if he has too! Let’s just enjoy The Bat for what he is and what he’s doing. And again, the fact that Tampa Bay is picking up the tab for all this production is just awesome……

I got home late, about the 5th inning and was worried about the lack of offensive production, but awesome performance from Timmy…a win against Boston gets him to 9 wins and I think he will be at 10 easily before the All-Star break and headed to Anaheim…

Posey was in need of a breather…did you all catch an impressive at bat by Kevin Frandsen fouling off a number of pitches and then tripling to drive in two runs and push the Angel lead from 4-3 to 6-3 over the Bastardos? Good for Kevin.

I’m looking for Zito to be lights out again – just like he was last time out against Houston (allowed three hits in six innings of a 3-0 win in his last start at Minute Maid Park on April 6). G-Men continue to make like miserable for the “spacemen” of Houston, outscoring them 53-20 during their 9 game winning streak (7 games this season) against them. Go Giants!

I’d think that Bochy has shown you often enough how wrong you are with your preconceived notions of how he manages. It took about three seconds for Rowand to find a seat on the pine after Burrell showed he could swing. And if Pat stumbles, he can plug Aaron back in-and will. Or Nate- last nght’s AB will get him another whiff or two.

He can thank Sabean for Pat the Bat. Then again, no way Brain knew he would be this good. Lucky signing. 😉

How dare he exceed expectations . . .

And yeah, I think Bochy wouldn’t have too much of a poblem pulling him if Burrell scuffles.

Man I still marvel at that PA by Uribe in the 7th inning last night.25th BB of the season(already ties his season mark of last year)It turned the whole game around for the Giants.11 pitches which finished off with 6 foul balls and 2 close takes.Oswalt was dominating to that point, several innings with fewer then 10 pitches thrown. But that AB,which also put Huff at 2nd,the first time that the Giants even had a RISP at that point. It definitely affected Oswalt as Burrell delivered the goods with his base hit to tie the game. Isn’t it great when patience is rewarded?

  13. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on June 23, 2010 at 9:26 am

Yeah, soccer is seemingly random with the rules. Offisides is only called when one guy has the ball in the box? I get it in hockey. Soccer, once a shot goes, there can be 12 guys in the box falling and tripping each other. No offsides.

Shit, I mean, how many goals has the US lost? 4 in the last 2 games? None of which looked like offsides.

Whatever. Cool goal. But the extra time shit is equally nuts. How is that determined? Does anyone besides the ref know how much extra time there is? How much extra time can there be? 10 minutes? 5? 2?

  14. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 23, 2010 at 9:27 am

And he (barely) laid off two pitches that they’ve been abusing him with, that low and away slider. Yeah, great AB…

  15. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 23, 2010 at 9:29 am

Yeah, Kat. Bochy called that AB by Juan the turning point in the game. It really was a terrific job of making Oswalt work. Something he hadn’t had to do up till then as he was cruising right along.

Uribe has shown better patience while still being able to swing for the downs on a regular basis. He had a 4-walk game earlier if I remember correctly.

  16. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 23, 2010 at 9:29 am

And they don’t have to say who committed the penalty. Love that one.
    “That was a penalty!”

” For me to know and you to find out…”

  17. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 23, 2010 at 9:35 am

Yeah, I think the damn ref keeps the extra time to himself. Seems like it’s usually 2-5 minutes barring a long injury. It would be nice to know beforehand so as to plan strategy accordingly. Like boxing when the judges keep the scores to themselves. They changed that for some matches so the boxers know where they stand. Not sure if it’s universal however.

Fucking crazy game…was at a local pub. Got there at 6.20 (for the doors to open at 6.3)…already about 30-40 people milling about. USA wins Group C and advances. Wow!

I agree on the Uribe AB. That was money. And Burrell has shown some great patience since signing-on with the Gigantes.

    12 wins, 86 runs, 21 bombs. Contest projection: 17, 122, and 30.

  19. ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on June 23, 2010 at 9:43 am

Best pitching we’ve seen out of Timmy in a long while. Uribe’s walk and Burrell’s were game changers obviously and Sanchez’s double play with the bases loaded was spectacular.

Now to be a bit of a doomer…I know Oswalt is a great pitcher, but the Giants had way too many opportunities in the first 6 innings and couldn’t score. Huff, being thrown out trying to stretch a double, Renteria’s GIDP and then Molina’s leadoff single to be replaced by Whiteside who didn’t even make it to second on a srikeout/throwout. The first half of that game was way frustrating. Glad they got the win, but it was TORTURE!

  28. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 23, 2010 at 10:33 am

I’m all about the win against Oswalt, one of the best pitchers in the NL. But any Giants fan who watched the first six innings of that game can’t say they weren’t agonizing, and I didn’t even bring up Rent’s run allowing error. There was little hope until Uribe’s walk. Of course, that’s why they play nine, not six. Just a bit too much of a nail biter because of blown opportunities early.

  29. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 23, 2010 at 10:37 am

“and I didn’t even bring up Rent’s run allowing error”… the error went to Renteria but it was hardly just on him. Uribe interfered with Edgar’s opportunity to catch it… but whatfuckingever..baseball is torture, not just Giants’ baseball.

Dennis is right. What difference does it make? I know the ASG is supposed to matter with WS home field advantage at stake, but it’s still nothing more than an exhibition. Strasburg will make it, for TV ratings if nothing else.

One of the overlooked advantages to Timmy’s going 8 last night and Wilson cruising an easy 9th is that on top of the clustered pair of off-days, the bullpen is well rested. Should Zicasso have it in him to go 7 or 8 tonight and Matt remain the Horse he is Thursday afternoon; the pen should be so well rested they will be just on the plus side of rusty.

Bochy indicated the only way Bumgarner is likely to come up for Boston is if Martinez is needed in a relief role. Not highly likely. So it looks like Drrrty, Ironhead and Timmy against the Beantown Blasters. Thankfully the Sox test will be at China Basin. The offense needs to get wound up a bit more than they have been lately and my guess is that it could happen tomorrow against Wandy.

Brett Myers can be a fairly tough pitcher, but he has not had much success against the Giants. Hope they keep it that way. Be wonderful if they can sweep Houston and come home with a glow-on. The Boston series may tell us a lot. Giants take two of three from those guys, admittedly at home, and it would stir them up enough to then go on and crush the LaBumbos.

It was day by day in May and the team finished that stretch at .500 for the month. To date, they have come into tune in June with a recharged offense. Eight games to go in June and then four in July to get to the halfway mark. Can SF take 8 of the 12? If they do it should mean the LaBumbos are pretty much out of it and then the pressure is on the Dagos. SD has proven to be a whole lot tougher than they look. Latos and Richard appear to be for real. Their Pen is nasty. But can the likes of Garland and Correia win at a .500 pace? When it’s all said and done the SF Rotation and offense should prove stronger than Dago’s pen. The first step is Zito beating Myers tonight.

  40. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 23, 2010 at 10:56 am

I think I did tip my cap and say nice game. Believe me, I’m way more happy about the win than the mistakes. On the other hand, I don’t care how great Oswalt is. He had nothing to do with the 3 errors in the field and at least two on the basepaths. It’s probably just an aboration considering I think the Giants still have the best fielding percentage in baseball. With how the Giants squandered great pitching by Cain and Zito on this roadie, they can’t afford to give away unearned runs, or not cash in on offensive opportunities when they have them.

BF: Come what may, Strasburg will not be throwing 100 mph heat at Pujols, maybe at Morneau, but not any NLer.

Just did a little schedule checking and it may be quite a wait to see Bumgarner. With Martinez getting the nod vs Boston; followed by an 11-game road trip, likely the longest of the season and then the ASG break; the closest home opportunity to showcase the kid from Carolina looks to be July the 18th against the Mets. Of course, Bochy could choose to realign starting assignments after the break, but even so, probability trending is that MadBum will not make his appearance till the season is more than half gone.

Well, I have always loved tennis. Watching Wimbledon since I was a child (1974) at Castro Valley High School.
Eating cucumber sandwiches here is a goal I got 30 years later.
But todays game is right up there with everything I have seen with Steffie, Martina or the Williams sisters. A game that is in the records book.
When I turned off the telly last night at 9 to get ready for work, I missed the fourth set won by USA Isner v France’s Mahut. It was 2 sets all. Fifth set to be played next day.
It is now the next day. and During that day I searched the sports reports to see who had won. The game started about the same time as the football (England) match 3pm.
It was like Super Bowl Sunday as I drove home at 4pm. All of England were behind their team.
I turned onthe telly and lo and behold my match was ON!
Now it is 11am in SF and these to players have been evenly matched (playing) for over 7 hours; breaking many time/game records and yet they play on.
John Isher a 24 year old top 30 ranked picked as an outsider by JMcEnroe
    v
Nicolas Mahut a French talented hard serving player with speed.

It is now 45 games to 45 games and neither of them, while looking very tired, look ready to give up. Five and a half hours in the fifth set. Ace ~ 90. Take a look if you get a feed of early match Wimbledon games.

The All Star game, even with 34 man rosters, the new DH rule, and re-entry rule, even with all the crazy changes,is still a game that counts for Home Field Advantage in the W/S.

Which simply illustrates how ridiculous it is to have a foofy exhibition game with 34 man rosters and god knows what all to be something that gets within miles of counting for HFA in the W/S.

I say determine the W/S Home Field Advantage by which league wins more inter league games during the season,or something similar.I like the idea of all inter league games being halted as an MLB spokesman in the commissioner’s office Say’s over the public address system, the Pirates have just beaten the Rangers in Arlington, thus clinching HFA for the NL in this year’s W/S.”Make a national figure out of a Pirates reliever or PH for a few days.”

I’ve calculated the UGR for the posters here ( Ultimate “Get” Rating). Now I have all the individual ratings but I could get banned for ad hominem attacks if I divulge those. I’ll just say that Room B residents average a minus 7.8 UGR per day compared to a plus 22.1 for Room A.

The team with the best record should get home field. How baseball can fuck that up is beyond me. To answer Ted’s question, maybe that’s why we’ve talked World Cup and Wimbledon: Baseball can be fucking stoopid at times. One more screw up by them and I’ll open the floor with BASS discussion.
