A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Exit Molina Stage Left–What SHOULD Happen vs What WILL Happen

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 1, 2010

Let’s forget about Chris Ray for a moment– if he’s capable he’ll fill a hole in our BP. If he’s not we can ‘Garko’ him….

Obviously Posey now goes to catcher since Bochy isn’t insane and can’t  be considering more Whiteside behind the plate. By the way, how’s that “personal catcher” thing going? He and Dirrrrty don’t seem to have the same magic, do they?

Anyway, to me this move is all about defense. As in, IMPROVING it. And if the Giants really want to max out on this Molina Move they will put Travis Ishikawa in as the everyday first baseman.  Uribe and Renteria should be in almost a flat platoon at SS–both look tired right now and probably need the rest. Ishikawa would play lock down defense at first and I think would hit better than people think. With Posey behind the plate, Ishi at first, Franchez at 2nd, Uribe/Rent at SS and Panda at 3rd you’ve got yourself the best infield defense we can put out there.

What LIKELY will happen. Huff goes to first and we see more Rowand or Shierholtz in the OF. Again, our defense gets BETTER with that move since Huff isn’t the outfielder that Row/Nate are. But I don’t need to see the Nate Schierholtz Show anymore.  No comment on Rowand. Travis Ishikawa has been consistently ignored by Sabean and Bochy for 2 years running. He should get his chance and if he can’t do it there are lots of secondary in house moves Bochy can make…….

I’m not makin up the LUs, Bonehead is. You’d think he’d have started Ishi more than a coupla games into a season now almost at the halfway point if they were serious about him at all as a 1b possibility. I doubt the calculus to get rid of Bengie included, even indirectly, that it would open up a starting spot for Ishi, or even a regular platoon spot. I don’t care, start him for a while and see what happens. He’s not a world beater, he won’t make much difference. He’s the infield Nate. And we know now that Huff is plenty more than adequate on defense at 1b. What they need is an OF bat of consequence…

“I doubt the calculus to get rid of Bengie included, even indirectly, that it would open up a starting spot for Ishi, or even a regular platoon spot.” Leave calculus to those who understand it. Fact is, it does open it up, no need for calculus, arithmetic does the job… I’ve assigned you exclusively to the Baer beat, Snarkllefuck. Sabean just on KNBR. Said onus in on the starting pitching from here on out. Said they might have relied, maybe even become complacent too much with Bengie behind the plate. I think he was trying to compliment Bengie’s handling of the staff while trying to emphasize the burden will be upon them to get the ball rolling with Buster now firmly ensconced. Will continue to carry 13 pitchers for the foreseeable future. However long that may be.

Henry Schulman now confirming what we had feared; Whitey to start twice thru the rotation. At least initially anyways. For how long, who the fuck knows. That is just so wrong that I’m just going to stop right now. I’ll just say this. There’s no justification for it no matter how hard or deep one might look. Face it guys, this organization is fucking us hard with this one. Fuck them.

I want to add that Shea’s game story is a disgrace, lamenting the lost opportunity to hurt Padilla. Lest Snarkllefuck or any of the other Room B’ers dispute that he did just that, here is the text:
“Back on April 16, Vicente Padilla threw a pitch that broke Aaron Rowand’s cheekbone and sent him to the disabled list, and Wednesday was the Giants’ first chance at revenge.
It didn’t happen. Santiago Casilla threw behind Padilla in the seventh inning of the Giants’ 8-2 loss, and umpire Tom Hallion immediately warned both benches: Next pitcher who intentionally throws at a batter, in the umpire’s mind, gets ejected. Along with the manager.
The opportunity came and went, and Padilla emerged unscathed.”
    Shea should be fired.

    • swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 1, 2010 at 4:49 pm

Shea should be praised in my book. That’s fucking baseball.

    • swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 1, 2010 at 5:01 pm

TF, I’m not sure I see Shea’s fireable offense, to be honest. As a reporter, he’s simply noting that the Giants were clearly trying to hit Padilla. Saying that the opportunity came and went could easily be construed as a basic noting of facts and that it was written without any indication of a preference of outcome on the part of the writer.

The Giants wanted to take the opportunity to exact revenge. When he missed and the ump warned them, the opportunity was over. If Shea didn’t mention the incident at all, he would have been neglecting his duty as a writer. How would you have preferred that he re-tell it?

  10. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on July 1, 2010 at 4:22 pm

WTF, no Torres or Sanchez in the LU and two days in a row with Rowand as leadoff. Did Bochy actually watch the games over the last month? I know Rowand hit well yesterday. Great, but he’s not a leadoff man. When this team was winning it was because we were getting speed on base with our 1 and 2 hitter. Row and Rent don’t provide that.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 1, 2010 at 4:29 pm

Rowand’s a “core” guy least you forget. This organization sure knows how to try a man’s patience. I’ll give them that.

Here’s the email I got from Chronicle Live people–TWIN you saw this, any thoughts on this since you saw it?:
    Dela Cruz, Jay to me
show details 10:54 AM (5 hours ago)
Good morning. Thank you for your email.

I reviewed the Chronicle Live tape from Tuesday, June 29, 2010. During the program, Greg Papa and Paul Gutierrez of the Sacramento Bee were discussing Pablo Sandoval’s baserunning error during Monday’s Dodgers game.

Earlier in the day, Sandoval spoke to the media before batting practice apologizing for his baserunning mistake. Gutierrez, who was at the ballpark, asked Sandoval questions in Spanish. On the show Gutierrez stated Sandoval’s response, “Toda mi culpa” (‘It’s all my fault.’). Going into the next segment, Papa made a reference that translation was needed for what Gutierrez just had mentioned. He then said the perfect translator was Pablo himself.

I appreciated your writing to voice your concern and hope that you will accept my explanation. Please keep watching Chronicle Live, SportsNet Central and all of our programming. We always will appreciate hearing your comments and concerns.

    Best regards,
    Jay dela Cruz

Flavor: Sounds like gobbledegook to me. And I have not seen it.
It is not “baseball” to try to injure a player, Swick. Amazingly, Shea managed to make Padilla the voice of reason…

  15. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 1, 2010 at 4:59 pm

I didn’t see the Casilla throw but what was the fucking point of throwing at him but not hitting him? What message does that send? Throwing in the vicinity of him was the dumbest ass thing they could have done— pussy ass move all the way around. And Twin you’re getting all caught up in “what if they injured Padilla like Tony C”. At least that’s what I think you were suggesting I haven’t followed that theme too closely. Nobody was suggesting they hit the fucker in the head. Just drill him in the ribs. Boom, over with everyone moves on. But to throw at a guy and intentionally miss him, as I understand Casilla to have done, is just idiotic……

  16. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 1, 2010 at 5:01 pm

again, I don’t know who was suggesting to injure Padilla. And it’s easy for a major league pitcher to hit a guy in the ribs or somewhere in the upper torso and miss his head completely……

  17. swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 1, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Bonds crowded the plate for years. His actions brought on retaliation in the form of brushbacks and HBPs. Padilla’s action brought on a measure of retaliation as well. I wanted him to be hurt in the sense that I wanted that fuckface to feel it the next day, not hurt in an injury sense. Sheesh, why does it always have to go to such an extreme for you? Rowand gets hit all the time and I rarely find it to be cause for hitting another player. In my mind, this case called for it.

  18. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 1, 2010 at 5:11 pm

hell yes, I would have love to have seen Padilla get drilled in the ribs and feel it for a few days— certainly pales in comparison to what Rowand had to deal with. And minor pain for a few days that goes away is hardly some barbaric practice. That’s baseball it’s been that way for 100+ years……

Baggarly’s blog reinforces what a buffon Sabean has become. Whatever the reason that junior GMs are getting more jobs (uh, results? salary?), Sabean’s dismissive reply confirms that he fails to understand his competitors and may miss chances to fleece them. Other GMs likely “chatterbox” him because the entire league knows that he’s a dipshit and has proven to be an easy mark.

Plunking a guy is part of the game. Did Padilla warrant a HBP? Yeah, I think so but did the game call for it? Nope, we were playing for a win. Will he get hit later on down the road? Yup.
Tony C was a horrific hit to the head, maybe Rowand, Robbie Townsend, Jeff Kent etc… weren’t as bad, but baseball ‘s unwritten rules say the pitcher gets plunked. I know it’s gotten watered down in the Al with the DH and all (Martinez comes to mind as a big pussy) but it’s still part of the game.
