A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Unleashing Hell…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 8, 2010

Fun game. I tell ya though, this Posey kid,  I just never saw this in him. Hitting home runs? I just figured him for a Jason Kendall type….

Is it just me or does it seem like Torres and Franchez have lost a TON of hits over the last few weeks by hitting the ball on the screws right at someone?

Bad feeling about the game today but no biggie, we’ve already taken the first 3…..

Fun game…it has been a long time since the Giants have been on the right-end of one of these laughers. Yeah, that Gerald kid just might turn out to be a decent ballplayer.

Seems the talk of a Hart trade is heating up again. Here is some of the recent chatter over the past couple of days:

WEDNESDAY, 8:48pm: Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com tweets that the two sides are expected to talk about a possible Hart trade before their series ends tomorrow night. Rosenthal notes that Milwaukee likes Jonathan Sanchez, but it remains to be seen if a deal can be worked out.

TUESDAY, 7:40pm: Updating his initial report, Schulman adds that the Brewers haven’t decided yet whether or not they want to move Hart, so talks between the two teams aren’t far along.

7:00pm: Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says (via Twitter) that the Brewers will only deal Hart this week if a team overpays. The Giants, who don’t seem entirely convinced that Hart would have as much success in their ballpark, probably aren’t going to do that. Schulman, meanwhile, tweets that it would likely take “Sanchez‑plus” to pry Hart from the Brew Crew.

6:24pm: The Giants could be “focusing on a possible trade” involving Corey Hart, tweets Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. The Giants were recently reported to have interest in the Brewers’ outfielder, and Schulman noted yesterday that the Giants’ brass may have been scouting players at the Giants‑Brewers game.

Despite Pat Burrell’s success in San Francisco so far (.316/.391/.553), the Giants have still been linked to outfield bats, such as David DeJesus and Jose Guillen. Hart would be of particular interest to the Giants, since he’s under contract through 2011, and Brian Sabean has said his club would like to avoid merely renting players for a couple months.

When we asked nearly two weeks ago whether the Brewers ought to deal Hart, over half of our poll respondents suggested that trading the 28‑year‑old would be in Milwaukee’s best interest. For their part though, the Brewers aren’t eager to hold a fire sale, particularly with players like Hart and Prince Fielder, who are under team control past this season. In a second tweet, Schulman cautions that Hart, in the midst of a potential career year, would not come cheaply for the Giants.

So, what do the Flappers feel about a Sanchez/Hart swap? Would it cost the Giants more than Dirty alone?

With our team’s strengh being pitching (and playing in a pitcher’s park), it is hard to envision giving up Sanchez. The kid is going to be good for a really loooong time, and LH starters don’t exactly grow on trees.

    Here are Hart’s splits:

    Home – 1029 AB, 281, .337, .500, .837 (BA, OBP, SLG, OPS). 49 HR, 168 RBI.

    Away – 1090 AB, .269, .320, .466, .786. 37 HR, 153 RBI.

    At our yard:

    ABs – 38, .289, .308, .526, .834. 1 HR, 2 RBIs.

Zito for the sweep? Sure. As long as we keep up the newfound hitting, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Stats check time for them who care: Team is sixth in the league in BA, but 11th in Runs scored. Giants are 8th in hits, tied for 9th in HRs, likewise in doubles. On Base Percentage reflected in their R’s, also 11th. What this tells me is that they are not drawing enough walks and their situational hitting has need for improvement (like these last 3 in Milwaukee), Slugging % is dead middle of the pack at 8th.

Looking at the hitting overall to date suggests that they are the middle of the pack mediocre bunch some of us had expected going into the season. Though a definite improvement over last year, there is still considerable room for improvement. Posey replacing Molina is one big step in that direction. Rowand sitting more and more also helps. A huge boost would occur should Pablo rediscover his inner Panda.

Pitching is pretty much as expected, though likely to improve with the additions of Bumgarner and Ray. As of last night’s game, they are third in ERA but now a mere 4 points behind St. Louis, as the Cardinals have been undergoing a Mile-High experience. Comparatively speaking, the Redbirds pitching has fared much more poorly in humidor town. Padres lead by a fair margin yet in ERA, but with the likes of John Garland and Kevin Correia as their #’s 3 and 4 starters and with their 3 aces being a bit green yet, slippage is probable. Their bullpen remains tight and nearly unbroachable.

Giants staff leads the Majors in hits allowed, strikeouts and saves, but is DEAD LAST~ 30th place in Walks allowed. That gets reflected in WHIP where they are a somewhat mediocre 6th in the league. My expectation is that Denny Bautista will join the Fresno bus during the Break. With long outings probable from Madison together with the presence of Chris Ray in the BP, the relief corps should tighten up somewhat. Both Romo and Affeldt have been more consistent lately, while Runzler is gradually taming his wildness.

In a postgame comment, Lincecum made it pretty clear that it was much easier for him to pitch following that 3-Dinger, four-run outburst leading off the game. With Bengie gone and Rowand gathering more and more pine-splinters, the inability of the team to string together some decent ABs may not be so much of a problem. One of the biggest questions now is where to bat Pablo. I do like Buster in the 3-hole sweetspot.

This team may have turned the corner going to Milwaukee. We’ll know a lot more in a few hours time after Zito faces the hard-hitting Brewers who in games 1-3 have been stunned and smitten by some awesome Giants pitching.

  8. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 8, 2010 at 9:24 am

I just don’t see Hart making that big of a difference for the price. “Sanchez-plus” is way too much in my mind. Especially considering who’s going to fill his turn in the rotation. Joe? Seen enough. The Todd? Really seen enough. BTW, what’s up with him? He sure has quietly extended his stay on the DL. Not that any of us mind however. If something could be worked out for Ryan Braun, now you’re talking. His price would be exorbitant, but worth it in my estimation. BTW, sure it’s purely because he’s slumping, but Braun isn’t in today’s lineup.

Hart is not a hr hitter… he doesn’t hit for average… he strikes out a lot… he’s not the missing piece the Giants are looking for. I say pass on him.

  11. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 8, 2010 at 10:07 am

Personally, my suspicion is that the price on another outfielder we will see this week may be a bit lower for a roughly equivalent player. Compare the stats on Hart with those of Josh Willingham of the Nats. Sosa + Bowker + Mixon might do the trick.

Washington would get a pretty much MLB-ready starter; an outfielder/first-baseman who still has promise as a potential slugger and an AA-starter who should not be more than one year from being MLB ready. Schierholtz could be substituted for Bowker and possibly Maday for Mixon.

Under this scenario the Giants do not give up a single player who would make a major contribution to the team this season. Likewise, Washington is in a rebuilding mode. The prospect prospects might be tempting. Maybe Rohlinger or Downs, complemented with one or two of the ML experienced Fresno relievers could get Cristian Guzman thrown into the deal. I don’t pretend to understand the thinking of the Nats’ GM, but the potential of five prospects for two regulars might do the trick.

I don’t have a bad feeling at all today. The Giants have the Brewers reeling. This is a team with no pitching, and play lousy defense. They are already packing in the season under Macha.Yeah it’s hard to take 4 straight from a team esp. on the road but i just have a feeling the Giants will kick their asses again today for the SWEEEEPPPPP!!!!!!!!

And No also to Corey Hart.As i mentioned yesterday (Wins against replacement)J Sanchez 1.6 WAR Corey Hart 2.1.The difference won’t mean shit.War for J Sanchez and Hart needs to be modified by considering who would pitch for us not “Replacement” if Sanchez departed and who would not play for us(Scheirholtz? Burrell? Ishi?) if his place was taken by Hart.I would say that to give up Sanchez with Wellemeyer our fallback would be much to high a price for Hart, replacing the players to whom we would not be able to give playing time. Now if we could pry Braun or Fielder,in a package for Sanchez i’m all in!!

Leading off on MLB Trade Rumors today was a story emanating from ESPNs Buster Olney about the Phillies, who appear to be on the skids, now considering trading off Jayson Werth. The MLBTR columnist spun off four teams who might be holding talks with Philadelphia on the doubles machine ~ first team listed: The Giants.

No doubt the Phillies would want an arm and a leg for their rightfielder who will come up as a Type A free agent this fall. Giants have said over and over that they do not want a rental, so some sort of ‘deal’ would have to be made with his agent before any possible trade went down. My guess is that such a trade would assume Sanchez + choice of Schierholtz or Bowker as a replacement + a couple of middle-high prospects likely including Wheeler.

Pure speculation on my part as is anything else regarding Werth at this point. Evidently, the Phillies realize they are quite unlikely to repeat in the face of the rise of the Mets and Braves and looking at the looming free agency, are ready to do some talking. If its just to be a rental i’d say no, but if something could be worked out under the table, fine, just so long as it would not be too costly. Under this scenario Henry Sosa would take Drrrty’s place and become the #5 starter, with Bumgarner moving up to #4.

Werth is a hard-playing clutch performer, not quite so much a slugger as a slash hitter who would fit China Basin well in that regard. Again, excepting for the F.A. conundrum, he would be a good addition to the lineup were the cost not prohibitive.

Bochy just strongly hinted that if the opportunity arises this Sunday, he’d use Timmy outta the pen for a inning to set-up Wilson. Bochy told Jon Miller Tim doesn’t know about it yet, but he’ll inform him shortly. Appearing Sunday would not preclude him from pitching in the ASG as that rule only pertains to pitchers who start the Sunday game.

  16. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 8, 2010 at 11:04 am

Well, it’s dumb to just say “no Hart”. Of COURSE Hart would help them. He’s a huge upgrade over Rowand/Schierholtz and he’d let Burrell be more part time, as it should be. It’s not a question of yes or no, it’s “for who”. Sanchez, no. But for, say, Nate and a couple minor league pitchers, hell yeah.

  17. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 8, 2010 at 11:07 am
