A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Nice Start

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 16, 2010

Lovely game last night, wasn’t it? It was +130 lovely for me. As I suspected, Timmy mowed down that line up. Now we turn to our mercurial master of mediocrity, Zit-Man. He needs to step it up. He’s got ONE WIN since May 16th. That’s just not cool. Niese is his opponent and he’s a guy who’s sort of turn4ed a corner, IMO, over the last several weeks.  I suspect we finally see Torres back tonight, at least I hope so.

We’re -130 tonight. Ugh, who would take that bet? Let’s just pray to God that Zito goes 6 or whatever and staggers to the dugout with a 5-3 lead….

Excellent start to the second half. Nice to see Timmy get the CG shutout, and nice to see the Panda drive the ball. Now let’s see him do it with some consistency.

    What you talkin’ ’bout, Willis…

Wow, you can only hope Dontrelle can re-gain some semblance of form. You look at his stats and you then understand why the el Tigres and Snakes sent him packing.

    Willis’ lifetime stats:

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/willido03.shtml

    Check out 2008: 8 games, 7 starts, 24 IP, 9.38 ERA, 2.2098 WHIP. OUCH!

This is the last from Henry’s latest piece…kinda sums it up:

“The Giants need starting depth. Willis needs to find himself. This is a no-risk move with a low probability of success and very little downside.”

All I can say is “good luck, Dontrelle.”

Exactly Chi . . . When he first came to the show, I wasn’t as impressed with his outstanding pitching, as I was with his character. This is a good kid and I hope that he can find some semblance of the success he experienced when he first came up.

That being said, if he isn’t successful as a baseball player, you have to root for him as a person and wish him well in his future endeavors outside the game.

By the by, STOP breathing down my neck in FB . . . Frickin’ 5.5 points yesterday.

Seemed Timmy was pitching more to contact last night. Hopefully the other starters can come around also. Think a fast start in the 2nd half is important. They shouldn’t be satisfied with anything less than 3 of 4 from NY and 2 of 3 from LA.

Yes, I hope Barry is true to form going forward.

      Some interesting stats on him:

      1st half – 65-70 with a 4.18 ERA.

      2nd half – 75-40, 3.42 ERA.

In the Chron article, Tim gave props to Posey as well for his economical 110 pitch outing. Giants got him a run and he shut them down and out dueled the other guy.
Great game. Even Amy looked great. And Rowand hustled into the insurance run.

FP was less annoying than I thought he would be, tho he does still come up with stupid shit. The idea that because Posey threw out the just off the DL Beltran playing his first game all year would “shut down their running game” is ridiculous. If that’s Reyes, it’s different, and Manuel might tell his players to get better jumps before taking off. Hopefully the last time I see or hear Ratto on TV, too.

Great job by Timmy and the G’s last night. That was just what we needed, get the second half off to a strong start, and set the tone. I’m so glad Tim didn’t pitch in the ASG. He’s probably not, but I am.

I think what Sabean said the other day was right on. Our pitchers did not pitch to their abilities in the first half, allowing way too many walks and throwing a lot of sloppy innings. If they can get that shored up, and if Panda can get it going, the Giants are going to be tough to beat down the stretch. Is a big bat in the offing? Who knows.

As for Buster, what can you say? He’s a stud and the real deal. I just love the way he throws the ball. That position is so energized now that he’s taken over, it’s amazing.

Would anybody care if Sanchez was dealt for a hitter? If it was the right bat, I wouldn’t mind at all, especially with the emergence of MadBum. Just MO.

    • ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on July 16, 2010 at 8:30 am

MadBum has looked good, but you also have to remember that the most innings he has thrown in professional ball is 141 in Augusta. I am sure the team will watch his innings down the stretch, and he may get shut down early. Between Fresno and here, he has 100 IP.

Compound that with Cain, Sanchez and Zito being somewhat shaky, and I don’t feel really good about trading away a starter. Who is going to step in? Martinez or Wellemeyer. No thanks.

If the staff can throw more efficiently, Panda returns to form, and Uribe gets back on track, then IMO, the need for a bat minimizes.

At the risk of sounding like a broken fucking record, IF they add a bat, I would prefer to see them get someone who can be had for a couple of prospects.

And I still think they could stand to add a good reliever (preferably a lefty).

      • JBat's avatar JBat said, on July 16, 2010 at 8:44 am

Good points, hence my “the right bat” qualifier. If Prince Fielder was that bat, though, I’d say bye bye Dirty. Truth be told, I think your scenario is more likely, Chi, Sabean making a deal for a hitter by trading a couple of prospects (Cory Hart? I don’t even know if I’d want him). Panda getting back on track would go a long way to alleviating those offensive concerns, and last night was a good start.

        Go Giants!

      • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 16, 2010 at 12:46 pm

The possibility of then acquiring someone like Jose Guillen, where the Giants can give up mid-level type of prospects rather a starting pitcher I think becomes more plausible…

Considering he seemed to be the pitcher with the biggest concern regarding Posey, Lincecum’s post game comments were big in my mind. He gave him props on calling the game and appreciated his play.

Posey called a good game, cut down a runner in a key spot, scored and drove in the only runs of the game. That weak ass grounder to 1st with the bases juiced would have been a DP with Molina.

    Nice win.

    • ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on July 16, 2010 at 9:10 am

Actually, Posey drove in one of the runs. Panda drove in the first with his double off the wall. Regardless…this Gerald Demp kid can play some ball.

And I agree re: the props to Posey. Gave him credit for helping him keep his count down, and complete the game. Good stuff.

Yeah the extra rest for Tim (not being used in the A/S game) seemed to really help him in this start.Locating pitches well, with good command(only 1 walk) just what we needed to start the second half.Hey the Giants sure don’t “knuckle” under when it comes to knuckle ball pitchers.Beating Dickey their now 3-0 against them this year, having beaten Haeger of the Bums and Wakefield of the Redsox’s.

The only real hard hit the Mets delivered came when Alex Cora hit a foul ball into the Giants dugout that hit Bochy and left him with a welt on his right jaw.”I’m OK I took one for the team,Bochy said.”Guys were scattering in the dugout and we lost sight of it,But it’s worth it.”

A consistently growing concern is Uribe. In his last 10 games:

    34 ABs, hitting .088. 2 runs, 3 hits (no HRs), 5 RBI, 2 BB, 7 Ks.

The team is going to need his bat if they are going to be successful the second half.

Agreed, WSW. But when they do score 2 or less…the odds are not good. Panda and Uribe need to find their strokes…

And Zito needs to find that “second half gear” beginning tonight. Tough match-up tonight against Niese. He has lost only once since coming off the DL June 5th.

  29. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 16, 2010 at 11:02 am

The thing is, this was exactly the kind of game where Tim and the others have been failing. While it’s easy to put it on the offense, you do expect a Lincecum to out duel an R.A. Dickey-this time he did. Winning more low scoring games is part of the equation… and Jesus, did Panda smnoke that ball? Might have bounced into the third base dugout if they let it go…

Who knows with Zito? Timmy did a beautiful job of setting the stage last night, so the example is there in front of him. It’s the second half and a home game, so maybe Barry can pull out of his rut and go a solid six or survive a shaky seven. Tonight’s game is a bit of a teller. Should Zito come through, the Giants are well on their way to a successful homestand.

Posey and Pablo last night provided the punchbowl for Lincecum. Pablo driving the ball hard in the first game after the break was a fine sign. Some more hitting like that and we get our Panda back. Buster seems to do everything well. Totally delighted in Timmy giving him those postgame props. That means Whiteside is mainly around to give him occasional rest. Torres starting tonight could be huge. Between Andres and Buster there’s a lot of team energizing going on. Effect is a multiplier as it usually amps one or more of the other guys as well.

I read a story on the 2nd half that said last year at the break, the PS had 13 shut outs and this season only 6, and that they had lost 26 and won only 2 games when scoring 2 or less runs…It’s amazing when ever something gets mentioned, the opposite
happens…Not to mention Pablo and the 2 out rbi…

    • ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on July 16, 2010 at 11:30 am

I saw that on shutouts, WSW. Also mentioned earlier that they are now 3-26 when scoring 2 or less. Not a recipe for success. Again…all the more reason that Pablo and Juan have to get it going…

  32. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on July 16, 2010 at 11:22 am

Lack of success in tight games was the downfall in the first half. Those shutout stats reflect that. Throw in the increased walks and its not a good recipe for success.

Didn’t SF have some outa sight numbers in 1 run games last year? Can’t remember the specifics.

I know he didn’t come out with “guns blazing” last night, but I hope Bochy keeps Ishi at 1B tonight vs the lefty, Niese. I really don’t like Uribe-Rent-Franchez-Panda infield. His avg. vs lefties is nearly identical as it is vs right-handers. Sure his power numbers have suffered, but the defense is so much better with him at 1B, Panda at 3B and Juan at SS. Plus, we should have some added “oomph” in the lineup with Pat the Bat likely getting a start. Not to mention Torres back in CF tonight. Ishi could bat 8th in tonight’s lineup vs Niese. That would be a pretty potent 1-8 for tonight.

He has not had an ERA below 5.17 with the Marlins, Tigers or Diamondbacks since 2006.”

It’s EXACTLY the same, except it’s not ST now, so instead of in camp, he’s tossed to AAA level to see if he can swim. Willis is done, multiple teams cut him loose, there’s no downside, but maybe lightning in a bottle happens…

  41. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 16, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Has there ever been such a phenomenon as a five-tool first baseman? Doubt it. But i had to check out the stats for Brandon Belt this morning. Not only is he batting in the .380’s between A and AA, but the level is over .400 in his short stint so far at Richmond. His OPS is well over 1.000 (Panda territory at a similar stage in his development). Home Runs have been flying off his bat. The lanky, lefthanded Texan actually has more BBs than Ks, so his OBP is through the roof. Oh, and he also has something like 18 SBs with only about a third that number in CS.

So here we have a prospect who can hit for average, hit for power, run with the deer and evidently fields his position at least reasonably well. Because he is a first baseman, about the only thing that is hard to gauge statistically is whether or not he has a good throwing arm. Looks like four tools to me. He was drafted as a fifth rounder LAST YEAR and has been tearing up both High-A and even more so, the pitching-rich Eastern League in AA, his FIRST season in organized baseball.

Note to Timmy: You might get a kick outta Brandon’s D.O.B. It is 4-20-88. This kid is barely 22 and from the looks of things to date, he may be battling Buster for the title role in the next filming of “The Natural”.

Mantra for the Giants in 2011 may well be “Buster up, Belt em out and look to the antics of Kung Fu Panda to keep em laughing all the way to an Orange and Black dominant late October.”

The chance of Willis making a comeback are just as slim as “The Clown”, with the same no-downside-risk profile. The fact that Byrnes didn’t work out with Seattle is irrelevant to the decision in ST not to give him a try, and his demise was certainly not unexpected. Dennis, is that Chuck Norris, or the Most Interesting Man in the World?

Most Interesting Man in the World, a.k.a. Jonathan Goldsmith. Who until he landed that great gig was best known for a few bit roles on “Dallas” and “Dynasty.”

Zuma, perhaps my blog name will give you a clue as to the flavor of my post about Bonehead’s hook motivating Zito…

Yes, let’s hope Zito gets off to that second half magic. Zito’s stats (by the half-season) repeated from an earlier post:

    1st half – 65-70 with a 4.18 ERA

    2nd half – 75-40, 3.42 ERA

    Giddy-up, Zits!

Well, it’s Friday, so that means one thing; orange jerseys tonight. Perfect 7-0 this yr. when donning the orange.
Not even Zito can fuck that up. Well, he damn well better not.

Yeah…don’t be fucking-up the Orange Friday Mojo.

I think that was The Most Interesting Man in the World, Chuck. What say, Dennis?

Another good one: “He is the life of parties he has never attended.”

“He lives vicariously through himself” I always liked that one.

Speaking of FP being a fucking idiot. Outside of his wholesale suit deals, Bip has never really impressed me but he had some good comments on the post game last night about Lincecum and how everyone is worrying about his “horrible” start. Bip said something about how a pro can only give his best on any given day and that is what he should focus on. Not all the BS being said or circling around him.

Dude has won 10 games and did well last night. I’ll take it.

Zito hasn’t won in a while but there were a few starts in there where he performed well and didn’t get the W. With the AS break, he’s has had plenty of time to snuggle and dry hump his pink pillow. He should come out strong tonight.

This from one of Baggs (Pavolec;s) latest pieces:

“Right-hander Todd Wellemeyer will also join the Grizzlies Monday, where he expects to make at least one start before returning to the big club as the long reliever.

Wellemeyer threw 22/3 innings of rookie ball Tuesday in Arizona, and said his strained right quad feels good while pitching but still “bites” him when he makes quick fielding movements.”

WTF – We were talking about 13 pitchers yesterday. Who the hell goes to make room for Todd? And if his quad isn’t 100% (still “bites” him when he makes quick fielding movements), why the hell would you bring him up? Just fucking stupid.

  58. alleykat's avatar alleykat said, on July 16, 2010 at 1:53 pm

Yeah your right Chi,Why the fuck do we even need him back at all.I was feeling so much better about this team when Wellediggers’ass went down.We actually had a chance to win games every 5th day and have now with Mad Bum.I do NOT want to see him in a Giants uniform ever again.Fuck they are crazy if they just don’t throw him in any deal coming up.

    • ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on July 16, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Well, at least he will be back as a reliever, but I agree…why bring him back at all.

  59. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on July 16, 2010 at 1:55 pm

That is probably why they want to bring him up. Get him in a couple games in the hopes that he performs well and include him in a move.

  60. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on July 16, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Well, the absence of anything resembling a long reliever, which showed up during the last home stand, is why. I mean, Bautista? I’d rather see Swellenhead out there . . .

    At least in small doses.

“The Giants have long been linked to Kansas City right fielder David DeJesus in trade speculation, but the Royals hitter they might have a better chance of acquiring is Jose Guillen, according to Giants beat writer Chris Haft.”

That from mlb.com Royal scout in attendance last night, but I don’t think Guillen warrants any mlb talent in return. Mid-level prospect(s) would be as far as I go for renting him for 2 and 1/2 months.

I’m taking my son to Sat. bobblehead game. Do we really need to be in line at 3:30 before the gates open? Never cared enough to be early. Sure, we can get stamped and leave, but I’d hoped 4:30 or 5:00 would be plenty of time.

And just for July and ’tis the season: Kenny Lofton for Felix Diaz, Ryan Meaux

I can just imagine Dick Tidrow as Mr. Miyagi and Willis as Danielson.Hey it’s a no risk deal just like Burrell was.Maybe we score 2-2 on this one.

No Panda tonight. Personally, I think this lineup is horseshit.

Torres RF, Sanchez 2B, Huff 1B, Posey C, Burrell LF, Uribe 3B, Renteria SS, Rowand CF, Zito P

  67. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 16, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Rent and Rohand in the same LU is asking for — nothing. With Zito, those three = about 1/2 a batter tota at the bottom 1/3d. Lucky if we get one hit outta the three. Zito must think Bonehead has it in for him. For the XX Beer Most Interesting guy, the one I really like is this one, when I first heard it on the radio I almost drove off the road laughing: “He once went to a psychic — to warn her”….

I totally agree Snarkk. Renteria and ROwand in the same line up—- a Bochy wet dream that, once again, ruins the bottom half of the line up. I’m interested to see The Bat tonight. He had cooled a bit as the all star break came along…..

  69. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 16, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Hope the Bat DOES revive tonight and continues, it would be great if he could go yard about every 15-16 ABs. Giants basically gotta get it done at the plate with the first 6 guys in the LU tonite, unless Bochy’s wet dream comes true…

  70. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 16, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Does Bochy really think that Rowand and Renteria > Ishi and the Panda? Unfuckingbelievable. They’re gonna have to wear orange pants to go along with those orange jerseys to have any chance with this cockamamie lineup.

  71. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 16, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Bochy should have put that nonsense with the man crush bullshit to bed a long time ago…
FP says it so it must be true: they’ll need Rowand before this is over… he IS right, though. Look, it’s a lefty and that’s when you’ll see the most of the Bat, Rowand, Rent. As to Panda, why push it? He had two very encouraging ABS, why risk a confidence setback right away? I’ll take care of the worrying, I’m lousy at it. You guys take care of the cold ones… it’s fucking HOT here, 105 right now. That’s in the shade with a cabbage leaf on my head..

  72. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 16, 2010 at 4:48 pm

I’m down with Panda sitting with the lefty going, but I’ll throw Oracle a bone and say, as before, Ishi should be in there till he proves he shouldn’t. Yes, at home, against L or R, whomever. He’s 2 for 9 vs. LHs this season, not great, but he’s been swinging well for two weeks. And, Rohand is barely above that against everybody, and his hits last night were infield doinks. Bonehead predictably ignoring the hot young hand and managing to the contract yet again…

I’m grateful for the hits from Ishi, but now I need to see him crushing a few. Those seeing eye singles are fine in the clutch…but the reality is, he’s Mark Sweeney II if he can’t hit em high and deep and outta here at least 20 times a yr.
