A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Game 1 Goes to the Good Guys

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 20, 2010

I still don’t have the hate for the Dodgers burning deep within me the way it did in the 70’s and 80’s– but last night was sweet. Casey Blake looks like a tired, old woman at the plate. Who doesn’t *love* that?

Bumgarner looks like he’s 28 years old on the mound…..

And thank God for Buster Posey. If he doesn’t muscle that single into center field who knows how long the team would have been second guessing themselves……

Just a huge win all the way around, especially on the heels of the Sunday game blown by that idiot Cuzzi. What the hell was up with his comments *explaining* his call?  “Blanco made a decent attempt to put the tag on him…that’s why I called him out.” Whhhhhaaaatttttt the HELLLLLLLLL is this dumbass talking about?

That was a nerve wracking ending….I drifted off to sleep as they took the Bum out of the game after giving up just one run. I stirred back awake to see Pablo put the tag on the third out and then started to focus again back at the top of the inning and all of a sudden the Dodgers have an extra run on the board. I was not sure if I had slept through an entire inning or what…what bullshit for two games in a row.

I had that sick feeling in my stomach that we were going to blow the game again, but what perserverence from Affeldt first and then Wilson has to just fuck with us to get the job done. But Blake is one big pussy hitter! HATE THE BLAKE!

Get in your “Wayback machine” when Paulie explained what transpired after the ump blew the call on Armando Antonio Galarraga. The “Lesson” was that a proper apology must be unequivocal and without excuse, i.e., “I WAS WRONG.” This is a lesson that all of us are taught when we are children . . . but some people forget or ignore.

I went to bed with the G’s up 5-2 with two outs in the eighth. I’m glad I missed BW’s Don Stanhouse impression again. 😀

Good win boys! You know it’s good when it pisses off the local Dodger fans. Let’s get ’em again tonight!

Posey seems to be a quick learner as far as PS goes. Pitch sequences with wilson were great, even not giving in to Ethier when he fell behind. Blake, DeWitt and Anderson ABs were classic.

Plus he helped calm down Mota and get Kemp out on weak GB after they talked things over. If he and Affeldt can build on what happened last night it would be a godsend.

Anyone who starts off a post with, “I love Casey Blake….” should know what to expect is coming, kind of like when Frank Robinson used to lean his elbow in over the plate against Bob Gibson. That’s how Frank hit, and how Gibson pitched (to take away the outside part of the plate where he wanted to work by coming hard in). Baseball is different today, for better or worse…if Blake homers he can celebrate, if not STFU.

I don’t get the issue with Wilson’s understated gesture at the end of the game. Many others are far more animated. It’s no different than someone pointing to the sky after a hit or crossing the plate. Comparing Wilson to someone like TO is bloody ridiculous.

  10. JBat's avatar JBat said, on July 20, 2010 at 8:17 am

Sandy Koufax, aka sanfrandodgerfa, really was one of the better Dodger fans to post on the Splash, but he never missed a chance to rip the Giants when things weren’t going well. So I have no sympathy for him or other Dodger fans when the Giants have a good game. So Wilson has a little routine after a save? BFD. Like Max said, comparing him to Terrell Owens is a joke. Unlike TO, BW is a good teammate, and when he fucks up, he says he fucked up.

Posey continues to amaze. His grasp of the game, poise, handling of the pitcher’s. Impressed with his cool when things were getting tense out there. It’s just f- mind blowing how good he’s going to be. How long has he been catching, 3 yrs? And already among the best in the game.

I was just watching the highlights of last night’s game, and it didn’t look like Madison was throwing especially hard, but his fastball has some nasty movement on it, almost like a cutter. I like his smooth, easy motion. I’m guessing a lot of hitters have trouble picking up the ball coming out of his hand.

I only mention all this because I’ve hardly seen him pitch at all. He looks good.

I read a couple of the posts last night about Wilson and his routine after a win. IMO he should not do the “Routine” unless he has a 1, 2, 3 inning. especially if he walks batters. If he gives up a hit I don’t mind the routine but not walks! No routine if he walds batters.

  21. Irish Kevin's avatar irishman5574 said, on July 20, 2010 at 8:57 am

Great choice for POTG. It could’ve easily been Affeldt, who got maybe the biggest hold so far this season, or even Wilson for gutting it out for a 4th straight day. But after the bases-loaded fiasco in the 2nd, that hit by Posey was MASSIVE. Interesting stat that Scully brought up during that AB: Posey already has two double-digit hitting streaks, the current one at 13 games. And right on cue, he gets the single. Just amazing.

  23. JBat's avatar JBat said, on July 20, 2010 at 8:59 am

It could be true if they were both Japanese. It was very common for Japanese bachelors, especially those who lived alone in Hawaii or somewhere else, to order what was known as “picture brides” from Japan’s mainland. But as for the validity of Scully’s claim, I have no idea. It’s all he are….good scull

He’s been going good, so he needs to make some friggin contact when he’s up with the bags loaded last night. And Panda made no mistake tagging the runner coming to third. The guy was 10′ away from him and rolling towards third, a tag was perfectly acceptable. Panda was aware of the out-before-score situation because as soon as he tagged the runner he looked home. A throw to first is the regular way, but not without risk. The ump blew it by a yard, not Panda…

When I was younger, I “hated” the Dodgers. And those guys were worth some baseball hate — Maury Wills, fuckin Drysdale, Cey, Russell, Lopes, and especially, especially Garvey. I hated ’em because they were so damn good, and beat the Giants like a drum for the better part of two decades. Alston and Tommy were the personification of evil in blue. But, I had to give ’em some secret respect, too, because they were damn good. They didn’t win pennants and WS by luck. I’m older than BF, I’ve mellowed maybe more than he has on this rivalry. It’s still good, but I can’t get too lathered up in the extreme about mercenaries like Furcal and Manny and Padilla that have multiple teams in their backgrounds. I might be on the flap’s younger side, but my hatred for the Dodgers runs deep. I’ve been brought up as a Giants fan and Dodger hater since birth. As I grew older and began to form my own informed opinions, I learned to hate just about everything coming out of LA. (Funny how I love San Diego though.) Right now, all my 18 month old can say is “Dadda, Mamma” and “ball” (probably because he’s been to 47 games already). I’m currently teaching him “Beat LA!” My older son is 14 and already wanting a car for his 16th. He really wants a used Subaru WRX. The traditional Subaru racing color is royal blue and there are therefore many more of this color in circulation. I don’t care if it costs me more, or if he ends up with a different car altogether, but he will never have an automobile that makes me thing of the bums…NEVER. I haven’t been around long enough to really remember the era before free agency, but I do remember seeing a t-shirt when I was about 6 that read “Duck the Fodgers!” Words I live it to this day.

Both my kids got raised as Giant fans and enjoyed many trips to the yard. My son still likes to go to games, but he isn’t really hard core. He’s more interested in taking in the sites (ladies), and having a few barley pops (both are all good…but this is his predominant focus when at the game).

My daughter on the other hand is hard-core…into the game, following trends, stats, etc. and always takes her mitt with her to the games). Like her papa, she too bleeds Orange and Black.

And that’s not to mention the dozen or so A’s games we’ve been to (unfortunately, Mom’s an A’s fan). Lucky for me that my father has Giants season tickets, but goes to less than half the games. He gives me his seats and I almost always bring the baby. It was no surprise that his first word was ball. Now whenever he sees a hit (at the game or on TV) he starts yelling, “Ball, Ball, Ball!” I do love that kid.

    Madison garnered the Bums
    And humbled them righteously
    While Buster blasted their hopes
    And it was good.

Kind of a sad thought….,But Madison Bumgarner now has more career wins against the Bums then Matt Cain.

Speaking of organizations to dislike, the Yanks supposedly revered their PA announcer since dirt, the voice of God, Bob Sheppard. But, none of the players, current or past, went to his funeral last Thursday. Now, that’s class… http://tinyurl.com/2ft3dnt

I agree it’s not quite the same today as when players like Garvey et al played for 10+ yrs, but damn, it’s still Dodger-Giant and if they are both contending, there is a different level of intensity to the games.

Rivalries exist in all sports and make for some special games. Cal -Stanford is still the game their fans want to win the most, even though the faces change every yr.

    • 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on July 20, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Good point Max. From all that I’ve read and seen on historic baseball tv shows, free agency has definitely changed things. But with the unbalanced schedule, divisional rivalries see eachother so much more each year than they used too. That has to help keep up the intensity. I mean, guys like Brian Wilson can deny it all they want, but you know he got some extra pleasure out of King Blake last night. I was almost hoping for a walk when I saw Blake in the on deck circle. I wanted Weezy to take him down.

Ishikawa is 8 for 22 with SIXTEEN RBI with RISP. Yes, he had a bad AB last night, but selecting that AB after a win in which Ishikawa was on base three times is just absurd. He’s been better than even “Jesus” with RISP.

    • 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on July 20, 2010 at 2:01 pm

I agree. He looked a little anxious when he came up with the bases loaded…tried to do too much. It was good to see him settle down after that.

I hated those Garvey, Cey, Lopes fuckface Dog-ear teams more than any sports franchise ever. And for many of the reasons snarkk listed; they were good, but they were also smug and self-righteous and as a Giants fan it was oh so easy to hate their guts. The Giants losing to them all the time only made it that much worse.

I differ from some here in that I still have no problem hating any iteration of the Los Angeles Dodgers. I will hate them until I’m buried, and beyond if there is an afterlife. My wife (a lifelong and die-hard Dodgers fan) refuses to take me to any more games at Chavez Latrine because I always, invariably, have a bit of a blow-up. I really put myself in the doghouse a couple of times. 😀 😀

So, Go Giants! Whip the Dodgers!

    • 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on July 20, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Your wife’s a Dodger fan??? How do you do it man? Even though my wife roots for the A’s, I tell her all the time that I have no problem with it. We met after a Giants game and she wowwed me with her baseball knowledge, but I also tell her all the time that if she was a Dodger fan there would not have been a first date. She laughs and tells me I’m kidding and I assure her that I’m not.

Ishi’s been workin it, yes. So his expectation level is up in my book. Like I said before, he’s getting more PT and deservedly so, but there may be a showcase factor involved, too. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets traded in a Sabes package for who knows what in the next 10 days…

Ishi was on base three times and scored twice last night. Does Bochy keep him in the lineup vs the lefty? I’m already getting pissed so that should tell you my answer.

DMD, it’ll be a surprise if Ishi is in vs. Kershaw. I’d bet more likely our friendly ground out artist and gamer Rohand makes an appearance in the starting LU…

J, that remindes me of the game I went to vs Atl early this season.

There was a guy sitting about 20 seats away wearing a Dodger hat, who was literally screaming with every pitch how great Derek Lowe was, and how he was going to shut down the Giants, and how the Dodgers were the best. People around him were giving him shit, and by the end of the 2nd, the guy sitting right in front of him turned around, grabbed his shirt and told him to knock it the fuck off. He duck-walked him out of the seats and down the tunnel, never to be seen again.

The Giants fan that took him out came back around the bottom of the 5th. No idea what the outcome was, but he got a nice hand when he came back . . .

If he plays Rowand, the OF will be Pat, Row, Torres. The Bat owns Kershaw in limited action (3 for 5 w/ 2 2B 1 HR 5 RBI) so he HAS to play tonight. We’re better off with the “Water Buffalo” OF and Ishi and 1B. Shit, he can bat 8th tonight.

Bengie and Rohand are like intestinal blockages. One has been removed, so things immediately started working better, with still some occasional cramping and nagging bloat. Get rid of the other, things will run smooth and regular for the rest of the season…

  72. dirtnrocksnreno's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on July 20, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Posey’s prowess at the plate has been amazing but I have been most impressed with his handling of the pitching staff. He has a great feel for the ebb and flow of an AB. Lincecum and Cain have gotten back to using the curve and Zito seems to trust him. He and Bumgarner have a great rapport. Now Sanchez needs to get on board.

  73. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 20, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Posey’s plate work and the pitching results so far with him confirm that Bengie’s rapport with the staff and pitch calling prowess was way overblown and overrated by the Giants PR, to rationalize Posey not coming up in ST. Most pitchers don’t want to change catchers they’re used to, that’s not news. Posey is ahead of Bengie in all physical respects of catching and hitting, and by the end of the season, he will have a fully adequate knowledge of the league’s hitters and tendencies that he can use and build on next season. The only thing now that Bengie bests Posey at is kvetching…

  74. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on July 20, 2010 at 3:41 pm

All this talk of Posey learning how to catch these guys, building comraderie, blah blah blah, it’s the PITCHERS who pitch what they want. Just because Buster holds down 1 finger doesn’t mean Tim has to throw the fastball. He can shake him off. Sure, it’s nice if these guys mesh and all that, but to think the catcher is solely in charge of the pitches isn’t right. All the preseason talk was just that. Sabean hedged his bet with Buster by signing Bengie. And it was compounded by not being able to wait until the arb date had passed. This ain’t a knock on Buster. Far from it. He;s a smart, baseball-savvy kid. It means the FO was scared to start the season with Buster behind the plate. The fact that, barely a month into his season, he’s batting 4th and kicking major ass just lends creedence to the fact that he would have been ready from the get-go. .

The shame is it may have cost Jesus the ROY.

Anyhow, story time is over. Beat the fucking dogs . . .
