Today is the Last Day of the Blog….

At least,  it’s the last day for the blog the way it’s presently constructed. I’m looking at the following options and will pick one shortly:

1) throw a shitload of words into the moderator cue. That’s going to limit what we can all post here but it will solve a lot of problems too.

2) have all the comments come to me first for moderation. I do not want this to be the choice, believe me. But I’m considering it.

3) Turn it into a private blog— only users that I allow can post here. Instead of having to ban people I just set it up as private and invite people to be members. Obviously, there are 30-40 hardcore nuts here who would want to keep this place going.

4) disband the blog

5) give it to a specific person. I haven’t talked to him about this yet so I don’t know if he would do it but I think he’d be the perfect person to run the blog….

Simply put, I am tired of this place. It’s not enjoyable for me anymore.  I’m tired of all the insults. I’m tired of all the accusations of who’s posting as who or under what veiled handle. I’m tired of all the emails that complain about certain posters or my daily topics. I’m tired of coming up with daily topics every day, or find unique pictures for POTG. You guys might not know it but it takes a fair amount of time to keep this place current, fresh and interesting. I’m tired of going through each thread figuring out who needs to get zapped and who doesn’t–especially on days we win, you would think those would be happy days for Giants fans. I used to have a passion for this but I’m just…tired of all of it…..

I still have great passion for one thing, and that’s being a Giants fan. I think I need to go back to that being the priority instead of managing this place……

Not that it will be the deciding factor, but I might throw a poll up to see which of those 5 options you guys want me to pick…….

    Magnus, I heartily sympathize — and thank you for what you have already done. I understand the work and mental strain of it all. I have two blogs. They get almost zero comments, so that part is easy. But I can’t even find the time to post one haiku sometimes. Correct that: I can’t summon the interest or energy. And i, like your blog, is for something I love! So, I understand the demands just to keep it going — never mind playing cop-babysitter-diplomat-motivator-advocate-instigator-peacemaker-taunter-teacher-mechanic. Thank you in advance, no matter what you decide.

    I’m not sure what to say. Overall, I still love this blog. But I can also see what a pain in the ass it can be to run. Personally, I love the daily topics you come up with, love the POTDs, love the POTGs. But you’ve done more than your share for the rest of us. So I’m grateful and thank you.

    I can’t vote *for* any of your options. I can only tell you what I *don’t* want. Options 1) and 4).

    But what I want or don’t want is of minor importance. I’m behind you whatever you decide. If the Flap goes on, outstanding!! If not, well, it’s been a fucking slice!!

    Well, guess you can’t change the name and call it Craig’s list. Taken already. Blogger burnout. I know the drill, having for more than five years made my living on a regional monthly shitstirring journalistic endeavor. That was back in the 70’s and me and one buddy delivered it to outlets over something like a 10,000 square mile area.

    What you have accomplished, Flav, is a work of art. It is far and away the best place for Giants fans to hang out and share hopes, thoughts, assessments and even general blather about our favorite team. Too bad there are people with personal issues who feel the need to use this forum for topics mostly unrelated to the general topic, to say nothing of the thread of the day. Regretably, i cannot offer any cogent advise as to how to deal with that situation. Your opening threads have been thoughtful and well-focussed and give us all something with which we can take off in our many directions.

    Perfectly understandable if you hang it up and if that’s what happens a hearty thanx for all your efforts, patience and general diplomacy. I certainly wish that one way or another you, or as you hinted, another of the regulars will be able to keep the dauber up and one flap down.

    OK, did I miss something again or what to wake up to this????

    Flav, this has been the best site for really loyal Giant fans to actually visit, but the site is flawed with I think we all know by the constant spewing of negativity that obviuously emanates around Twin that that is the flaw.

    This is what I think is missing from the blog and this is not what you intended.

    With my friends here in DC that are baseball fans but not Giant fans and with my friends back home that are Giant fans but not as dedicated as anyone that comes to the Flap, when we talk baseball, we banter about players, salaries, the state of the sport, etc. That is the essence of being a baseball fan..the bullshit that flies back and forth.

    Countless times here (obviously Flav cant sustain all the discussion and spend all this time managing the blog) I will throw up a topic in the middle of the afternoon to try and spur some discussion after there has been a lull on the blog and we have a few hours before game time.

    I will get the Blades, Pawlie, Dirt and others that will add some comments to the discussion but then I get Twin posting what a f’ing idiot I am for even posting the comment. Or the other dozen or so posters dont bother to comment and then the whole point of starting a discussion goes for naught.

    It is a fucking drag to get slammed for just posting an idea and I think the constant slamming because one person deems it inadequate eventhough it is not his blog ruins the experience. If others think bantering about baseball and hot stove ideas, etc are not the point of this blog, then maybe I am expecting too much.

    I think the highlight of the blog has been the contest in May where we are all counting down how many rbis/runs, homers and SBs the Giants were accumulating. I do thank for Twin for offering up the prizes, but I think it would have been fun to do just for the sake of doing without the prizes.

    I thought it would have been a blast to keep those predictions going for the whole season to see who would come closest and I offered to help manage tracking the picks and everyone’s guesses to help Flav.

    Flav, I would prefer you would keep the blog to the loyal few. Dont worry about finding pictures of players, etc. Keep your workload to a minimum. If you could post the topic and then let fly, I would love to keep this going. Now if reloading the blog after every 50 comments is too much of a hassle, I can understand your headache and will live by what you decide.

    What the Fuck?

    As most here, I’ve been very grateful of what you have created. You have your own life, daughter, job etc.. But, you’ve managed do keep this up and running with a different topic pretty much everyday. Thank you.
    I know Pawlie would be able to express this better than me (and has), but comments do get out of hand at times. I like the banter about the Giants and baseball. I also like the side stuff, the weird players names, band names or whatever (using yesterday as an example). I don’t mind someone saying fuck you Bozo or telling me something I said was stupid. I, like most here have thick enough skin for that and it usually cracks me up anyway. I do tune out when it gets into a fight with labels like racist, liar or the like. I really don’t care who posts on the Splash or how many handles they have (here or there), that’s way out of my league of understanding of how all that works, so I ignore it.
    I won’t vote on the poll, this is your creation and stress maker so it really is up to you.
    Whatever you do Craig, thanks for what was.

    If we can also posts some comments here abotu the state of our team, that MLB blog story had the Giants exclusively searching for bullpen help and no bats. Dennis will be a happy camper if they land one.

    Now that the field for left-handed relievers is not down to just Scott Downs or Will Ohman, maybe the price comes down for both.

    I think I am comfortable standing pat without adding a hitter because I was not ready to give up J. Sanchez for Dunn or Hart (the opff-season may be a different story), but I think guillen would cost a bucket of balls, so I think that was a fairly low-risk move if we made it. But we can win the division without a hitter…winning in the playoffs? I am not sure about that…

      I guess Geno Espineli isn’t being considered for a call-up. I know he didn’t do so well the last time he was called up but lefties are only hitting .212 against him in the PCL.
      I wish they had been playing Burrell more, if nothing other than to see if they already had the bat they needed.

      I’m surprised Dye’s name hasn’t come up. Not sure I want him, but it wouldn’t cost anything but money and, as a free agent, I don’t think he’s subject to the waiver wire if it’s after the deadline.

    And I want to give a big F You to I think Buster Olney on Mike and Mike’s show this morning. I was half asleep and I think it was Olney.

    Olney basically says the Padres will win the West easily and the Giants will have no shot at the Wild Card. What an arrorgant prick. We are 3.5 games out of the division and lead the WIld Card and both the Rockies and Dodgers have shown signs that they could fade big time, but the great Buster Olney from the East Coast automatically discounts our chances. I frickin hate that attitude form the so called “experts.”

    I really want to win this division now!

      I long ago came to the conclusion that the so-called “experts”, regardless of sport, are all hacks who have sold their soul to one organization or another in order to make a buck. Their “insight” seems no better, and many times worse, than the opinions expressed here.

    People make this so interesting and fun to check out on a regular basis. If it is no longer fun for you, I’m disappointed that we have allowed that to ruin the experience. If you feel the need to change the ground rules, so be it.

    Reading and taking part in comments here is sometimes the most fun I have in an entire day, whether or not I agree with what is being said. Anyone that agreed with me all the time I’d be pretty suspicious of, considering how often I am dead wrong about stuff.

    Flav, I also want to pass along my appreciation and thanks for your wonderful blog. Part of my routine every morning involves looking forward to what you’ve come up for a new topic. Even before I check out the game stories, yours is the first voice I want to hear regarding the Giants. The pix, the POTD, POTG, it’s all great stuff.

    However, if you’ve reached the point where it’s become an all-consuming monster, then by all means do what you have to do with regards to your well-being. As much as I would hate to see this go 😦 I’m cool with whatever you decide.

    thanks for the kind words you guys. And to be clear, this is NOT about the dust up last night. I’ve been getting tired of running this thing for a while now. You’ve probably been able to tell in my threads– while i still get them up every day they feel forced to me and lack the passion that I used to feel when I would write them. Right now I’m leaning towards option 3 or 5. Will decide all this by the end of the day/game tonight….

    Yeah, I’d hate to see this go away, Craig. This is by far the most fun and knowledgeable Giants site out there.

    How about 6) Leave it the way it is, less day-to-day updates.

    Yeah, the POTG and POTDs are part of the coolness here, but they can be updated less, and same goes for the topics. Like the Splash before this, topics are a starting point, but we usually diverge pretty quickly anyway.

    That’s my $0.02. Beyond that, I’d just like to thank you for doing all this. It does become a time suck. I know a little but about the topic hunting and picture searches with my blog. Reno routinely busts my balls for picking lousy topics . . . and I don’t update mine nearly as much as you do . . . then again, I don’t get the traffic either . . .

    I’ve been stopping by lately to see what the regulars have to say about in-game events, etc. Still a lot of good stuff posted here. I have no interest in the bullshit. I don’t know what happened last night, but I can imagine. I think, as a blogger, either you grow out of the fight club or you don’t. I have. You did a great job, Craig. Hell, even with your heart no longer in it the blog’s been worth visiting.

    I have some experience with the private blog option. Tough to fight the entropy. Maybe you can use that “author” function, or whatever it is, and circulate responsibility for new posts among a few of the regulars who want to participate more actively.

    As I recall, a shared theme of the blog was tits, not just the Giants. Like prison and boarding schools, you take the tits away and things get tense.

    Flavor, you have such a great balance between being a fan of the team, enjoying the game in itself, appreciating history and context, separating true outrage from trifles. If my rants contributed to the devolution, mea cupla and I’m sorry.

    Why not nominate a guest host each Monday and ramp back to weekly posts? Might be fresh, allow for more perspective, relieve the pressure of daily bitch sessions about each play, lineup, move, etc. Much like the MLB season itself, there are only so many ways to agonize over every fucking pitch, every fucking minute, for seven months.

    If there’s an ethos I’d like to see change, it’s the occasional torch-n-pitchfork rally to run people off or mess with posters on Splash. Who cares? Really. How fucking Lord of Flies can we be? Yes, we all need to get life, but that one is baffling. It’s not enough to be heard, raise challenges, have a heated discourse. There’s somehow fun to be had in “running off” a dolt or heretic from OneFlap or Splash, then back-slapping each other here. Well, we got him … him being Big Flavor.

    Dude. Flav. Let me chime in to the chorus of people expressing their appreciation for all you have done. It’s great to have a place to share with other Giants fans. I especially am thankful for this place on days when the Giants just frustrate the crap out of me. Whether I’m reading or contributing on those days, the humor and anger spewed here when the Giants are at their worst easily brings me out of my funk within minutes.

    I agree with Ted, not 1 or 4 but obviously this place should be fun for you, not a chore. How about some combination of 3, 5, Chuck’s suggestion for 6 and some additional methods for dealing with the nastiness? Maybe you could scale back the amount of work you do and start threads every other day. Share the moderator load with that other person you’re mentioning and have them alternate weeks with you so you’re not the only one posting threads.

    Most importantly, if the bickering is getting to you, treat all of us here like we’re kids. Make membership here be by request only but don’t turn anyone away initially. When the arguments get heated, put the offenders on warning. If it continues, suspend their account for a day until they cool off. Don’t bother with constant threatening or cajoling to get people to comply, just one warning and boom. Suspended. That sort of treatment works for my kids and sometimes those of us here act like kids and we require the same behavior modification.

    Just my two cents.

    BF….It’s been an honor and pleasure knowing all the hard work you put it running your blog.I know it can’t be easy.I was really excited when you decided to say Fuck Off to the Splash, and all the BS non baseball related crap it turned into, and start your own site.It was an easy transition for me,following guys/gals to a site who really enjoy the passion of Giants baseball.And i agree with Unca and Dirt and others that it’s total crap to be bombarded by e-mails over stupid things like thread topics ,potg,potd, does someone need that much attention? Fuck get a life.GH post at 7:21 was gold.Especially his point about constantly getting slammed for posting an idea.I feel the same way on that one,and i’m sure others do as well.But still I for one hope you keep it going Flav,because it truly is the best site for Giants baseball,but i support what ever decision you make.

      GH, I liked your post, too. Twin, I’m sure you’ll probably read this, so I want you to know first that I appreciate your sharing your knowledge. I feel like you know more about baseball than any three people here combined. I have defended you numerous times over on the Splash because I value your opinions. It took me a while to come around to this but I also find you likable as a person.

      But sometimes you can be overzealous in defending your positions. It works on the Splash because some people there just need to be told they’re idiots. But here, I don’t see a whole lot of people posting shit just to be assholes. Even a guy like Jed seems pretty respectful of the spirit of this blog.

      When it comes down to it, I think we should all reevaluate how we treat each other here and how it’s received. I think most everyone here is fine with being called fuckwad or being told we’re wrong about our opinions. But when the arguments get personal or overly heated, they need to just be shut down. If it comes down to Craig shutting this thing down vs. keeping it open, I think we should all realize the seriousness here and agree first to police ourselves better and keep complaints sent to him at a minimum. Again, I just wanted to add my thoughts and I hope nobody takes offense at it or, for that matter, even thinks that they shouldn’t post here. I like all of the people who post here and hope that things can carry on with the same people – just in a more civilized manner.

        I had computer problems this morning and couldn’t log on. Craig, thank you so much for all the work you’ve done. The Flap is, hands down, the best Giants site on the web. Everything I could possibly say has been already and I’d like to echo the sentiments by GH, Kat and Swick. I truly hope that the blog can continue with the same participants following a little more mature code of conduct, yours truly included.

    BF, I’m not sure you want my opinion on the topic at hand but here it is:

    This is a great blog! Easily the best in the area, and I have been looking around lately.
    What I would suggest is that you back away from the content evaluations and let the blog police itself. Of course, this means that there will be times trolls are afoot or that there will be verbal shoot outs between certain parities. If you are one of those parties have at it. But, let it go if you are not. You provide an excellent platform for people to express opinions- -usually about the Giants, but often not. Don’t be a cop. This is a blog, not an elective office or a life or death situation on a public street.

    I left here a while because you eliminated my predictions after pissing off the Pontiff. Not because of said Pontiff but because you responded to his protests. I felt it was between him and me- -not you. If you get involved in all such disputes no wonder you are burned out.

    This blog is too valued by many to turn over to some computer/asshole monitor that produces pages of “Deleted” postings like the Splash, too valued to turn over to someone that studies each comment for its “correctness”, and too valued to disband.

    Option 3, a private blog, is an option. But, it will surely strangle this place in the long run when new blood is blocked and others drop out for whatever reason.

    My suggestion is to go back to your original concept, “Unfiltered and Uncensored”. Then let it rip!

    WP gives a lot of options when you have to register and be approved to post (private blog) so here are my thoughts with the disclaimer “Unfiltered and Uncensored”. Then let it rip! OSF

    my 2 pence worth as a Giants fan and occasional contributor.
    1.) It always seemed BF was the only one with the power to move things along when they weren’t productive. That eats your will to live and I cannot fault your being tired of it.

    2.) This group has a lot of talent, experience, knowlege and personality. We got a 3-1 chance of success.

    3.) Who’s to say (that) if we rented a luxury box and all showed up, we’d be able to enjoy the game, agree half the time and no fights would break out?

    4.)Someone always wants to be popular or admired; someone else wants to disturb or irritate; everyone else misreads a post now and again. Uh, oh!

    5.) (2pence buys a lot these days)
    5.) There will always be trolls. I repeat what I said before: if you want to argue with another to prove you’re right you have lost already. Stay with the facts ignore the rest and let nature take her course.

    moderators with 30 or 60 minute time outs when a day or forever seems too long.
    – this can break the momentum of bad replies going nowhere or send a warning to a blogger that they have used a forbidden word(s). The rest of the day’s current bloggers continue blogging.
    one way is to make every post begin with the word BASEBALL (this is about baseball) and when a reader sees the comment deviating away from baseball he can skip to the next post.

    If someone _wants_ to deviate from baseball talk?
    They can use sub-titles like GAME NOTES or OBSERVATION or RANT or OPINION or ANALYSIS (the list goes on) but knowing what is coming may help the blog readers to focus or mods to moderate.

    because of the time difference I volunteer my services for the ‘end of last night’s post’ to the noontime posts, where someone else can step in. One of the things I miss from Blogger is the time stamps; WP only shows the day to me. I often get up and last nights game is still going. Cool

    YA know how America has 3 main time zones? the world has 3 as well.
    In IT we call it the ‘follow the sun’ method of international attention.
    But, as I think in all situations,
    California is the first and the starting point for all time and other time works backwards from there.

    So … the 3 time zones are: PST 8 hours ahead is GMT which is 8 hours ahead of CST in China, when the sun comes up at 7am it is 3pm in London and 11pm in China

    there is no daylight time in China (or AZ), GMT becomes BST (British summer time) and PST becomes PDT

    You shouldn’t have to be any of this: cop-babysitter-diplomat-motivator-advocate-instigator-peacemaker-taunter-teacher. and people shouldn’t be emailing you to complain!! Let them start their own blog and manage it. This is like the office water cooler. sometimes guys argue and call each other names. you either walk away or stand around listening to the two dudes argue. In this case you can either read their posts or ignore them. That is one of the reasons I like this place, you don’t have to be PC to post here. None of us pay you BF so run the blog the way you see fit.

    Baseball, fantasy:
    it is 10pm on Friday, Twin just popped in to try some of my wife’s homemade apple pie and discuss the trade deadline. I am already half in the bag (G&T ya know?), but Twin brought his own fork and his taste buds are ready. My wife is a great cook.

    I’ve been on the spreadsheets all night, but I am thinking we gotta go with the group that got us here so far. No argument from Twin who knows something about Affelts (now healed hamstring) vow to pitch like there is no tomorrow. I’ve had a friend at batting practice the last few days and he says Panda is in a groove.
    We go to the TV room for some scrabble, the game starts at 1am and I am wearing orange.
