A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Dirrrrrty’s Mouth and Welcome Back Manny Burriss…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 9, 2010

This will be unpopular, but I like Jonathan Sanchez’ bold words after yesterday’s game: “We’re going to play SD and we’re going to beat them 3 times. If we get to first place, we’re not looking back. We are definitely going to make the playoffs”…..Hell yes, say it again, louder this time! And to make this bold claim even more impressive, Dirrrty had the balls to say this on the heels of the team looking so awful in Atlanta. I’m surprising this wake up call came from him, he’s not exactly a visible team leader. But I’m glad he said it. The Giants needs a reminder that this is August and they are in a pennant race. Freddy Sanchez doesn’t know what the hell is going on right now, he’s usually booking his Winter vacation around this time. The team has to play the rest of the season with a belief that they aren’t just good enough but that they WILL BE WINNING this thing. No other mental approach makes sense. Forgot all that “locker room pin up shit”– The Padres have been kicking our ass all year, I LOVE IT that they are now hearing an attitude from us— kinda reminds me of Rocky in Rocky 3 during the 2nd fight with Clubber Lang: “Ain’t so bad! Ain’t so bad! Ain’t so bad!!!!”…. Pin those comments up on every locker in SD for all I care…….

Manny Burriss getting recalled today (according to Baggs). No big surprise, especially since it will likely be The Todd who gets bounced. I would be more excited about Burriss’ arrival if I felt confident that speed was still a major part of his game but I think he isn’t going to be back to full physical and mental strength until next year. Either way, if his arrival sends Franchez to the bench a little more, I’m all for that……..

I didn’t make it POTD, though I should have.  On the last thread, Zumie made a good point:

The thing that is the bad thing on any of these blogs is grating repetition. Soph, at the Splash, is horrible, but even more horrible because of the repetition. If someone has a criticism, make the criticism and then MOVE ON to other things, or come back to the old thing in a new creative way. This is why TF is so good at this stuff. I see people all the time talk about him never criticizing the Giants. Say what? The dude shares his criticisms of the Giants; he just doesn’t keep repeating the same criticism over and over. He moves on with the unfolding events.”

I’d like everyone to remember this. The Flap isn’t The Splash, thank God. Let’s not act like the posters still left in that tumbleweed town……

I’ve always been a fan of the word “palooka.” Brando telling his brother Charlie that he landed him “a one-way ticket to Palookaville” was classic. I always wondered what state Palookaville resided in. South Dakota comes to mind. Palookaville, South Dakota has a nice to ring to it.

Well, well see if Sanchez can back it up on Friday. His inconsistency drives me nuts though.
Last time he faced the Pads, he went 7, 1, 1, 3 BB’s, 10k’s. I’ll take that again but San Diego is a little better now offensively now.

JS post all star numbers aren’t as good as what he was putting up earlier, and over all since start of June his ERA is near 4.00. WHIP is more like 1.5, and more balls have left the yard. Walking Lowe, who is a terrible hitter, was tough to watch, and cost him a run. Two bad pitches beat him yesterday, middle in and btw knees and belt, to a couple guys who hadn’t shown much pop. HIs numbers certainly aren’t bad by any means, but not as good as other SF SPs, in terms of ERA, BBs and HRs allowed.

Hopefully this a pep talk to himself. During yet another Yankees-Red Sox game on TV, at one point they flashed stats about Yankees SPs in play offs last year. They only used 3 to handle good hitting big run scoring teams like Angels and Phils….would JS be one of ours, or not?

I realize this is August, but the Braves more than likely will be a team the Giants would/could go against in the playoffs. With that said, the weather in October will be more favorable to the Giants pitching staff. Lets hope the offense shows up

Frankly, Bummie is doing a better job than Sanchez. They could easily go 4 man and put Sanchez in the pen.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here.

Perfect way to start the home stand, facing a NUT CASE in Zambrano. He’s on a limited pitch count 80 -85 pitches.Giants show some patience, they will knock him out by the 5th and get to their terrible BP early.

Burriss up will help the G’s lack of speed on the bench.Even if he’s not 100% with his foot,he’s still faster then any other Giant except Torres. And when are they gonna shit or get off the pot with Renteria? He’s obviously hurt, taking up a healthy roster spot and bench player right now.Shit they did it earlier in the season with DeRosa too.Having 5 healthy utility players coming off the bench sure makes more sense then using a pitcher to hit, total embarrassment for a contending team to do.

Stop with the incessant whining about Renteria. Pay attention to Z’s post…
If Velez wasn’t ready I figured it would be Burriss, he’s the only middle infielder of the group who is acceptable defensively at SS *or* second. And he’s a smart player. I still maintain they are very likely to eat Freddy’s last year. When you not only can’t hit but can not run at ALL, no way. Unless he rediscovers his youth, he’s gone. He hit a pop to deep SS yesterday and I swear Kruk ALMOST called it a “loud out”…

Not whining. Just pesky facts that won’t go away. Rent is .205 in July and .204 since the break … virtually identical to Sanchez during the same time. Rent is .237 RiSP for the year; Sanchez is higher, trending down. Yet Rent is rationalized or propped up daily by the front office and media stooges (less often on this blog).

Aside from $16M in excuses, they’re both lousy at the plate. Burriss would be benched for playing like Rent, he’d be Bocock’d out of town. At least Sanchez still has a glove.

I’m eating my Happy Meal with the giddy thought that Burriss was activiated on nothing more than a lazy hunch: “Maybe he can do some of the same shit we got goin’ with Buster and Bum.” Let’s hope so.

Willied, the bold move by Bochy (IF they make the playoffs) would be to go Lincecum/Zito/Cain/Bumgarner. Sanchez hasn’t necessarily earned a spot in the playoff rotation and it would be great to have his lefty arm in the bullpen for whatever the occasion calls for. Of course, it would be great to have MadBum’s arm in the pen, too, I suppose. I assume that Bochy doesn’t make the bold move and probably doesn’t go to the three man rotation unless it’s later in the playoffs or he needs to stave off elimination. He goes Lincecum/Zito/Cain/Sanchez and still you wouldn’t get much of an argument from me because even with Sanchez’ inconsistency, that’s a damn good four man rotation.

I saw someone on another site claiming that 1-3 vs. ATL is exactly what happens when the Giants face a good team. I was going to rage against him but then started looking at the stats and there’s a worrisome pattern. The Giants are playing:
    – .725 ball vs. minus-.500 teams (37-14)
    – .426 ball vs. plus-.500 teams (26-35)

Even if you take out the horrible 1-7 against SD, they’re 25-28 vs. plus-.500 teams. That doesn’t bode well for the playoffs. IF they make the playoffs. To do that, all they have to do is make some noise in the remaining games vs. SD, COL and LAD. Those 22 games are as big as any in their remaining 50 games. Let’s hope the last homestand vs. the Dodgers is an indication of how they’re going to rise to the occasion.

I’m all for Dirrrty proclaiming they’re going to win the West. There’s no way it motivates SD to play any better against the Giants than they were already playing.

Some notes on players for the rest of the year, without additional moves outside the organization:
Torres: Nothing to say, he’s the man at the top, one of the very best #1’s in baseball. Top team NL OBP from the 1 is Az’s .368. Torres ( just from the 1) is .364. What seperates him the pack is his power. Slugging percentage and OPS from the 1, Giants are the best. This is HUGE, the only reason they’ve been able to withstand Freddy’s poor performance in the two. Andres’ doubles are allowing Huff to drive him in even after Sanchez fails.
Freddy: one word: awful. I would not be surprsed at all if he was either DLed or just not playing by year’s end. Could be Uribe/Burriss even. Freddy’s defense doesn’t come close to atoning for perhaps the worst offensive player in baseball since the break.
Uribe: slump, no slump, hot or cold, he has to play. He is the assassin.
Renteria: STILL a big hit guy and despite the range isue, does not make the Furball plays. He’ll get some big hits down the stretch.
Sandoval: unlike Freddy, and despite the power outage, he DOES still drive the ball. (34 extra base hits). I expect some good RBI totals the rest of the way.
Ishikawa: those drives to dead center came out of the blue. I think the HR was just his 3rd career to center. Has to play against all RHers now.
Posey: expect him to hit below .300 the rest of the way, but finish right around .300. He HAS to learn to hit the ball to LF with authority. Being ABLE to go the other way is swell, he will not make a living on it.
Huff: poor August start, he REALLY seemed tired in Atlanta. The cool thing with the team now: they could afford to sit him a couple days. Has to regain his mojo.
Rowand: you have to forget what he was supposed to be and accept what he is. His contract is now irrelevant.. As a 4th or 5th OFer , he’s playing good defense and hitting over .300. As a bench player, he is an ASSET..
Burrell: could be the key guy over the next two months, a guy who could very realistally give them 12 HR or so rest of the way. Or 2…
    Nate: strictly late inning defense
Eli: he’s a fine son to Vern and Vera.
Burriss: might be the starting second baseman by playoff time if he hits at all.

I had hoped Franchez would have a difference maker by this time of the season. What a disappointment. Giving him a two year deal off an injury while they could have simply walked away while Kelly Johnson was out there on the cheap ends up being a big mistake.

But water under the bridge, I am not going to moan about the past for the remainder of the season.

Hard to believe Sanchez ever won a batting title. Worst hitter to do it since Carney Lansford.

I just can’t believe how happy i am knowing Wellemeyer won’t inflict any more pain and agony for the Giants. The Todd gets filed in the Ricky Ledee/Aj Jerk Off file under players that acted like they didn’t want to be here.

If a player sucks and at least looks like he is interested in winning I don’t mind them as much. But when you suck and combine that with an attitude and body language that conveys you would rather be somewhere else, well Fuck You and the Sabean-flyer you rode in on.

kat, I hear you man. Same thing bugged me about the dude. From his lame comments about STL v SF at the start of the year to his piss poor body language and weak-tit efforts on the hill the guy was a total waste of space for SF this year. Well, he did allow Bumgarner to straighten his act out before the call up so there is that.

He’ll probably land in STL, where he wanted to be all along.

How franchez won a batting title is one of the universes great mysteries. I would just throw him into the steroid scandal but I dunno…. 95% of the time he hits the ball inside 225 feet. This dude won a batting title, with little to no speed and no plate discipline just a few years ago. I’m not in front of a computer but he walked like 30 times that year. Batting champion. How did this happen????

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 9, 2010 at 5:40 pm

Especially amazin’ when you consider what he had around him for protection (pick anonymous A, B, or C player from Pirates line-up).

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on August 9, 2010 at 5:41 pm

I *am* in front of a computer. You’re right, he walked 31 times that year. Flav, one of your funniest intros said something like : Besides a batting average and a thong, I really don’t see what Freddy brings to the table.
Well, replace batting average with decent defense and you’re just about right

Hey GH…How those 2 HRs for Pablo in Atlanta work out for you…. Just kiddin LOL

The Pablo HR watch now stands at 44 Games 162 AB’s since June 15th Ouch!

  59. Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 9, 2010 at 5:39 pm

If you look at his yearly totals, when he really made his downturn was 2008. He had hit 53 and 42 doubles in 2006 and 2007, that fell off to 26 in 2008. Last year it was 29 and just ONE in over a 100 AB here. Based on a full season, he’s on pace for about 20 this year. Fact is: unless there is yet another undisclosed injury, he’s pretty much done. There is no place in baseball for a low average, low OBP, low slugging, no speed player.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 9, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Except the Giants Twin . . . at least this year, anyway.

  60. Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 9, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Attacking another player is not an effective defense for Sanchez, BTW. Pablo, as with Rent, as bad as his numbers are, they destroy FreddyFuck’s.

  61. Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 9, 2010 at 5:45 pm

Blade: you should elaborate. If you are referring to Sanchez, they have quite properly tried to give him every chance to play out of it. The point is that this will be his last year. There is no place here, either.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 9, 2010 at 5:52 pm

Agreeing with you Twin . . . If not for his contract, he would already be pounding the pavement looking for a job. No doubt that will be his plan next year, sans glove and bat – which he will not have a use for in the “real” world.

Sabean has a weakness for signing guys based on one achievement:
    Sanchez: Fluke batting title
    Roberts: WS stolen base
Rowand: Face plant in OF wall

    • Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on August 9, 2010 at 6:01 pm

He signs them based off of the back of their baseball card. There was never any attempt to project what a player might do or a step he may take. At least, until this year. Whether it was luck or a different approach to signing free agents, sabean had probably the best off season of any gm in terms of 2010 free agents…

  64. alleykat's avatar alleykat said, on August 9, 2010 at 5:59 pm

    The one number that sticks out with Freddy now is his K’s. 2006 only 52 K’s in 582 Ab’s,with the Giants in 279 Ab’s so far 48 K’s. That’s a huge difference from 1 every 11 Ab’s to 1 every 6.

  68. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on August 9, 2010 at 6:14 pm

Loo has his moments with baseball analysis. His free agent pick up ideas are usually abysmal. But he’s never afraid to call for bold change. Every time I see a shortish Asian man 60+ years I think of loo. No joke. And no one can beat him when it comes to recalling baseball details pre 1970….

  74. Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 9, 2010 at 6:35 pm

When the good moves cannot be acknowledged, I’m afraid you do have to dismiss the analyst altogether. Snarkk’s comment on the Burrell signing was perhaps the most egregious example. He actually used Pat’s success AGAINST Sabean.
I’ve gone into this before. There are two kinds of player acquisitions to the doomer: bad and lucky.

As I posted on the much classier Splash, I think Panda will be part of an off-season package that could bring back someone like Hanley or Braun.
