A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

“What if We’d Lost that Game?????”

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 15, 2010

I can’t shake that question and can’t imagine this place if we hadn’t won that game. And yet I still don’t know how we won it. We had no chance to win. Yet when we went extra innings I was CERTAIN we were gonna win it. Doesn’t make sense, I know….

Our bullpen has quietly turned into one of the most reliable cogs on our team. 4 innings of no run ball yesterday, 3.2 innings of no run ball the day before. And it’s been EVERYONE…….

The ONLY thing I’m worried about today is that Timmy tries to hard. Just let it flow, baby. LeBlanc isn’t a chump but he’s totally beatable and Tim’s lost to a few guys like this in 2010…

Regardless,  today is huge. Not a must win since we have several more games against the Padres this year, but if Timmy is going to be a part of this TODAY needs to be his day. Very few of the Pads hit him even moderately well….

Yeah- yesterday’s win was remarkable. Latos was in complete control, and then Panda finally connected on one of those high fastballs that he swings at sometimes. And boom! Whole new ballgame. In fact, it wouldn’t have gone extra innings except that Posey wasn’t able to get a runner in from third with one out, when he hit that shot right at the shortstop.
    —-
Timmy needs to find his control today. Stop going 2-1 and 3-1 on so many hitters. Have faith in his stuff. Use the big ballpark.

Like you Flav, I’ve been out of town recently (SCUBA dive trip), but trying to keep up with G-Men news via my laptop . . . Overall, they have been playing great despite Giants starters being winless in their last 11 games (recording six losses and five no-decisions). As you alluded to, the win last night was unbelievable. Pads had their best pitcher looking almost as dominant as he did in May when he pitched a one-hitter, recording 9 SOs last night. Additionally, per the article I read this morning, San Diego stranded 16 runners, including the bases loaded in the eighth and two runners each in the ninth, 10th and 11th innings. Couple that with the Pads having won 5 straight, you scratch your head and say, “fuckin’ eh? How the fuck rover did we win last night?”

Anywho, I don’t question it . . . just accept it and savor the win 🙂

Marichal’s lifetime record vs. Dodgers @ Candlestick: 21-4
That is the definition of an ace.
Tim needs to make a statement today.

  4. Jed's avatar Jed said, on August 15, 2010 at 8:37 am

Loo – Tremendous stat. Marichal was sometimes knocked for missing key starts and padding numbers vs. chumps.

In response to BF’s post headline, the sole consequence of a loss Sat. would be gathering a search party and finding the ledge where Decap and his band of foam No. 1 hands would be threatening to jump from. Whatever happens, it’s still too early to worry about final standings. Roadie vs. Phils and homer vs. Reds have no less import. Keep grinding.

  5. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 15, 2010 at 8:43 am

Good points on Timmy, Zoom. He does need to trust in his stuff and play to the park and his fielders.

Lots of contributions yesterday: Bumgarner outpitching Latos on one level ~ he went one more full inning. Giants hitters must be credited for drawing out those counts against the Padres ace even though they didn’t seem to be doing much run-wise until Panda upset the whole applecart by tomahawking that high fastball. The bullpen kept the Dago hitters frustrated by letting some get on base and then consistently pulling the plug like Lucy pulling the football just as Charlie Brown was launching his kick.

Then there was Buster. Pete Rose won the title of Charlie Hustle playing for the Reds and Phils. In the final analysis of yesterday’s game it was Buster scrambling for second after Hairston just missed that bleeder, deflecting it into the outfield. We are told that one reason Posey is a catcher is that he’s not particularly fast. Tell that to the Padres. In my book he won the Rookie of the Year award on that one daring play yesterday afternoon. It also won the ballgame.

  6. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on August 15, 2010 at 8:54 am

Bum settled down after that long first inning. What was that total for him, 26, 28 pitches? Late in the game I noted he was cruising to 80 while Latos was topping 100. And that is when Latos gave up the HR to Pablo (not that it was a mistake pitch, at the fucking shoulders, but it sure didn’t move). Anyway, Bum kept the game tight and the pen did too, into extras. The Giants beat the Pad at their own game.

NYT today has a full recap of last week iin the Giants/SD race, game by game. Some people still appreciate exciting races, apparently.

I said Friday that today’s game was the most important of the three. Of course, if they hadn’t won yesterday that would be painfully obvious. But now it’s the ace, returning to his original windup. No predictions or pronouncements from him. He just has to get it done, and continue to get it done for the next 6 weeks. The win yesterday kept them even, toe to toe. A win today will be a huge blast toward the Div. title.

Just got a thought. What would happen if Timmy reverted to form today and stays there? I’d be curious as to how Mr “reverts to form” over at the Splash would handle that.

The mighty Giants are depending on a “Timmy.” Not only that but he’s THE Timmy!

  9. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on August 15, 2010 at 10:23 am

I’d agree with you guys most of the time this year when Timmy struggled. he just needs to trust his stuff, but that doesn’t seem to be what happened his last start vs. the Cubs. In the first inning, he was trusting his stuff and going right after batters. The result was hit, hit, hit, home run and 4-0 after a half inning. I don’t think it was as much his confidence last start as it was his stuff just wasn’t there. Timmy needs to find his stuff early today, then he can trust it. Come on Big Time Timmy Jim, we need this one. Time to dominate like you can.

  10. James's avatar James said, on August 15, 2010 at 10:37 am

The Giants and Pads starters collective stats are pretty much the same this year, with the exception of Latos’ Timmy like numbers this year. If Lincecum had his usual ERA, we’d be in first right now, not the Padres. Tim’s having a good year, but the expected ace numbers are an unfortunate lack.

I suspect he’s lost some edge because the change up — which usually ends up out of the strike zone — is not being set up by the 95 mph fastball.

  11. Craig's avatar Craig said, on August 15, 2010 at 10:40 am

James. I suspect you’re right about that. And Jed you are also correct, every game counts the same. But if they lost yesterday, and Timmy loses today, I think this team would be DOA on Monday…..

Man I like that Lineup today.Moving Posey to the 2 hole, who can hit to right well and see more fastballs if Torres reaches base.Could see alot of 1st and 3rd situations with the boppers coming up.

I thought the key yesterday was Panda’s HR.Nothing was happening off of Latos at that point. He was dominating us,and that shot not only rejuvenated the bench,it knocked Latos out of the game.2 great positives in one AB.

Maybe it’s just the sunlight, but doesn’t it seem clear Lincecum has better stuff out of his old windup? On that 3-0 pitch to Ludwick he threw a 4 seamer I think, took something off it to be sure he’d get the strike, and let it cruise in at 91. His full-on two-seamers were hotter than that in the first. I don’t think Lincecum’s lost anything.
