*L*–incecum……
Welll, he wasn’t horrible. He wasn’t all that great, either. Bottom line is that Lincecum got out-pitched again and we get another L for his *efforts*. Unfortunately, Tim’s starts are starting to feel a lot like the “Zito starts” from his first couple of years with us. Tight. Everyone on edge. All eyes on the MPH board. That’s not the way we want this team playing during a pennant race. Tim’s starts are not only ineffective, they’ve become a distraction to the team…..
Speaking of Zito, today we get to lean on him for a critically needed quality start. Ugh……
One run. Doesn’t explain Tim’s struggles, yet look at runs scored in his post-break losses: 2, 6, 2, 1. And the 6-run loss included 4 after 6th and Tim was gone. Prior pre-breal losses SF scored 3 and 1. Sure, he’s supposed to keep SF in games and win his share, but the bats need pick him up in this stretch and change the conversation. “Who can make a play? I can!” T.O.
Outpitched, yes, but it also happened to Ubaldo yesterday, along with Wainwright in his last home start. Carpenter is a legit Cy candidate guy. More encouraging is a great game from JS and Bum…1 thru 5 SF SPs still pretty tough. Brewers have slapped around two Pads SPs in a row too.
Yesterday the great bandleader and pianist Count Basie would have been 106…and I still think he would have gotten to first quicker than guillen on his IF hit. If he can’t run, he’s no better OF than Huff, which allows Ishi back to 1B, etc. He admits his leg bothers him, making this move all the more curious.
I’m done ragging this guy, but…he is definitely on the list of guys I don’t want back next year, which includes: FS Rent Rowand (obviously) plus Nate Whitey Mota.
Uribe might be done too. I love this guy, but as James pointed out his numbers have taken a big slide back toward end of his Chisox days, and his D was never a strong suit anywhere. Might wind up being the good vet guy in the clubhouse type, but no longer a starter. Hope he’s got enough left in the tank this year to help SF get over the hump.
does it look like Garcia is the better pitcher? yes
does it look like Zito raises doubts in every Giant watchers mind? yes
with Halliday and Pujols and more does STL look stronger? yes
with the SFGs @ .556 and STL cards @ .550 this ngame is anything but a tossup; it is time to win – one game right now.
which TEAM do you think can do it?
I have one answer, what is yours?
Brewers slapped around 2 former Cy winners LeBlanc and Corriea.
With regard to Zito and Garcia, I’m not certain what you’re talking about eddacker. Yes, Garcia has pitched better for the year ( 10-6, 2.58 vs. Zito’s 8-7, 3.56 ERA). However, Zito owned the Cards on April 24th, where he allowed three hits and struck out 10 in eight innings of a 2-0 home win. Conversely, in his only appearance versus San Francisco, Garcia gave up four runs in six innings of a 4-1 loss April 23rd. Want more? Garcia has posted a 4.41 ERA while losing two of his last three starts. He allowed three runs and walked three in six innings of a 3-2 loss to Milwaukee on Tuesday for his second straight home loss. Though Zito is 0-3 with a 3.69 ERA in his last six starts, he’s been given an average of 1.62 runs of support during that span. In short, the Giants need to give him more support.
Insofar as St Louis being better than the Giants . . . Yeah, it may look like that on “paper,” but the Cardinals are 2-5 on an eight-game homestand where they lost two of three to the lowly Cubs and got swept in a two-game set by Milwaukee before losing the opener with San Francisco.
I like our chances today and am looking for Zito, et. al., to kick ass on the Cards. Go Giants!
If being competitive means our guys start hitting tonight, then I say: play ball!
BTW, somehow my replies got crossed your reply is below.
go figure?
LOL!
Edd: Said it the other night: Not too impressed with the St. L LU. Yes, they have Pujols and the overpaid Holliday, but beyond them it looks like the bunch the Giants were trotting out a couple years back ~including Winn and back a bit further, Happy Pete. Giants have the better LU and better BP, so it comes down to SP. So that takes us to whether or not Zito is on his game. Garcia has been scuffling in his last couple games so Giants hitters need to get at him early. This game should be the most competitive of the three.
good answer!
LeBlanc and Correia are two former Cy winners alright. Winners for being the leading cause for the use of Cymbalta.
Juan’s back, but so is Rowand at lead off. I guess you really can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Rowand cf, Sanchez 2b, Posey 1b, Burrell lf, Guillen rf, Sandoval 3b, Uribe ss, Whiteside c, Zito p
Giants monthly run splits:
April 12th in NL (1st runs allowed, 13-9 record)
May 13th in NL (7th in RA, 14-14 record)
June 11th in NL (6th in RA, 13-14 record)
July 1st in NL (8th in RA, 20-8 record)
Aug. 12th in NL (10th in RA, 9-10 record)
Besides April, when pitchers were dominant * with Todd* (only 4 gm. > .500?), SF’s staff and defense have been middlin’. Fans are conditioned to parrot “it’s all about the pitching” and tolerate the LU “issues,” but the only way SF can pull this out is hit the fucking ball hard somewhere. SF doesn’t have the staff and defense to dominate Sept., and it probably wouldn’t be enough anyway. Tim, Zits, ‘Pen – not the issue. Gotta hit the ball to win this.
Look no further. First base could become a major strong suit for the Giants next season. Last night Brandon Belt, for Richmond in AA, clocked his 19th dinger of the season, a three-run shot. All right, nineteen is not terribly impressive for a combination of High-A and Double A ball. So check out the rest of his stats: BA: .359; R 85; H 154; 2B 36; 3B 10; HR 19; RBI 100; BB 78; SO 83; SB 20; CS 8; OBP .458; SP .622; OPS 1.081. Some may contend that the rangy Texan may have a weight problem: He stands 6’5″ and weighs 195. Imagine the see-saw cracks with him at first and Panda at third.
A September callup may be expected.
Also playing for the Flying Squirrels and having a decent, though hardly spectacular season is LF Thomas Neal. He matches Belt with doubles at 36, but has only one triple and 11 long-flies. His walk-strikeout ratio is not too hot at 43-90. He’s got 11 SBs to 1 CS. OBP is a decent .364; SP at an acceptable .444; BA at .293 and OPS at .807. A September 2011 callup looks more likely with Neal.
A third position player with the Flying Squirrels is shortstop Brandon Crawford. He has a flat ten errors at the demanding position, is nearing double digits in homers and sports an acceptable OBP of .337. Whether he is likely to be able to take over SS duties for SF next year is questionable. Like Neal, he may be a year away from full contribution.
Two relief pitchers at Fresno, Steve Edlefsen and Geno Espineli, have ERA’s under 3.00 and ought to join Dan Runzler on the big team within a couple weeks. Starting pitching in the upper minors looks pretty flat, with nobody particularly standing out.
For “shit and giggles” I would love to see Belt and Neal called up Stix . . . We get to see the future, plus it gives Bochy options (although, I doubt they will play that much). Stix – good info on the prospects in the pipeline 🙂
Jed I noticed the low runs scored in his starts too, that was my point. I think tim has become a distraction and everyone is walking around in egg shells to see what he’ll do inning to inning. And if I’m reading your numbers correctly it seems to me you took a big jump from July 1 to aug 12. Didn’t the giants lead the league in runs scored in July? They were close if they didn’t
Maybe the team should set up a strength and conditioning regimen for both Panda and Timmy. Needless to say, they would not be on the same dietary plans. If Timmy’s “impulses” have been held down, could be he’s not getting the munchies very often, so he’s getting a bit anemic. The smart course would be to direct those munchies into positive, but tasty nutritional uptakes.
“Didn’t the giants lead the league in runs scored in July?” I think that was the point of Jed’s post. The team has had one great month, which was fueled by the offense, not the pitching.
From Hank:
“Wow. Lot of whining about a lineup that pinned five runs on the last lefty they faced (Hamels). Very hot today. Trying to keep Huff fresh.”
Same could probably be said for Torres who is 3 for his last 21 with a bunch of Ks.
Run differential is a very telling stat. Usually teams with a higher RD have better records. So you don’t want a line up full of big hitters an no pitching or vice versa. You want a good balance of hitting and pitching. That Giants have that, they are just slumping right now.
Keep Huff fresh for what, his Oct 4 tee time? ‘Cause that’s when he’ll be available if Bochy continues to keep guys like Torres and Huff fresh. Horseshit! We’re 5 GB of the motherfucking San Diego Padres and Bochy plays both Rowand and Whitey. Again, horseshit! And Henry using that ex. of pinning 5 runs on Hamels with this lineup means absolutelyfuckingnothing.
Whining? You’re goddamn right I’m whining. This lineup blows. Zito’s RS for his L6 starts is 1.62 It’s a wonder with lineups such as this. Not to mention Zitshit’s numbers at Busch Stadium. 0-2 (8.10) This shit has 10-1 written all over it. What time does the Niner game start? Jesus. H. Christ.
“Tim, Zits, ‘Pen – not the issue.”Lincecum: 0-4 8.38… nah, no fucking issue at all. Jesus Horatio Christ, help that boy Jed.
There isn’t EVER just one issue. What a moronic post. Even Jediot’s own comments point up the OVERALL improved offense. Bottom line has always been the starting pitching and “”Tim, Zits, ‘Pen” HAVE to win more of the low scoring affairs than they have. Giants are EXACTLY average in RS, easiliy enough if the pitching hadn’t faltered over the last month.
BTW, hitting streaks hot and old are endured by ALL teams. The idiotic notion that July should be thrown out will be just fine here if we do likewise with a few other teams- keeping the Giants just where they are: a game out.
And of course Denny is whining. He’s high on the “Ledger Cocktail” at 10:45 A.M.
The pen has been good, they are only in there as part of Jediot’s quote…
The two new guys, BTW, have beehn fucking awesome. Seems that our resident doomers were aghast at those moves, as well. But I’m still waking up to the bullshit that the pitching is “no issue”. Denny: give Jediot a Ledger double..
You obviously haven’t had your dose yet if yer diggin’ today’s horseshit lineup. Best check Zeke’s bowl, wouldn’t want him sleeping 23 hrs./day. 22 is enough as is.
And don’t lump me in as a “resident doomer,” ’cause I wasn’t “aghast” at either of our two latest moves. In fact, I believe I said I loved the Guillen p/u. Gave Sabean props for at least trying to do something. 10-24 (.417) as a Giant. Glad he tried.
But that still doesn’t negate the fact that today’s lineup is utter horseshit. Guys getting rest to keep fresh. Shit, 38 to go and we’re 5 back. Motherfucking God himself shouldn’t be resting today. Play ball!
Unless out pitching staff is good for 2 wins in what, 17 starts, we will be fine pitching and hitting wise.
… I agree with that, it’s just absurd to post that Tim’s record,of late in particular, is not an issue. Or that there ever is a single issue when a team struggles.
Lincecum, however, is now not an”issue” , or a medium or economy or large issue, he’s a motherfucking Jumbo issue in a wiry bod. He and/or they better figger it out or get another boy to start every fifth day. Pat Fucking Misch is better right now..
Exactly, u can’t throw out july. And guillen has Bern hitting well, he’s a reliable bat in the LU.
I hate men fretting and acting like pussies. Suck it up, the Giants are still in this thing. The pitching will get better. And leave Pablo alone. He’s coming on fine. Screw the weight issue. It’s what’s in your head that screws everything up.
Denny, I never called you a “resident doomer”. You are the resident alarmist, the resident whiner, but others carry the Doomer flag higher.
I didn’t realize Bobby Bonds had won 3 GG’s. I never thought of him as more than an average fielder. But is was 75% boxscores for me back then.
One year with SF he struck out an enormous amount, too, like 180 something. Lot of problems with the breaking ball. First guy I ever saw with that combo of power and speed from the lead off , tho Brock could also muscle up a bit.
Bip is dressed like a homeless flasher.
Nice one Mr. Blackwell.
Have they EVER lost when Denny was this upset with the LU? I don’t think so. I’ve pulled up his 50 most vehement rants, put them in the blogticulator, and they are 10-0 on the days of his frothiest tirades. Put this one in the W column…
Why the hell do you think I bitch and moan all the time when I see lineups like this. I’ve seen the blogticulator stat sheets, I’m trying to help here. 😉
BTW, when ‘s the deadline for your contest? Oct. 3 at 1:00 works for me.
Love it when you guys sweat the LU…usually means good things.
Jesus H. Must be “Hit it to Pete Happy Day” at the yard. 5-3;5-3;5. Either that or the combination to Forrest Gump’s school locker.
Title of 2010 Giants highlight film: GIDP
Scott Ostler today mirrored twin’s gut feeling:
“Much credit to Barry Zito for reclaiming his status as an effective big-league pitcher. But please, Bruce Bochy, a shorter leash. Even if Zito is pitching a perfect game, get someone warm in the 4th inning.”
Vera is a two-bit whore. Gawd he blows.
Well, LaRussa’s act is working on W.C. Fields behind the dish today. Nothing has been a strike for Zits, everything for Garcia…
Maybe Bochy should whine like I do about the LUs, to the umps.
Fucker’s throwing strikes and has a very low pitch count. Southa the border guy probably loves the hot, sticky weather.
What three pitchers have the most wins, post AS break since ’01?
Nice block there, Vern. Worthless shit-for-brains.
“Ugly finder” returns. First time since the Velez TKO?
That pitch to Pujols not going 800 feet the other way is the blessing of the year. But, not an issue…
1-2 cripple to Pooholes, and now an 0-2 Stephen Hawking one to Holliday.
Where’s the mackerel, time to drop another chum marker chief.
Jesus H, I got lacrosse until just now, and it is 3 zip bottom of the 3rd
fuck!
Dennis I am on your team now!
Booze, ledge, anger, where is the team I thought could compete.
fuck!
I don’t recall Zito doing that stupid-ass hand wiggle from the stretch as much earlier this season as he is today.
Will K & K ever shut the fuck up about Rueter?
Rohand uses one, if not the, shortest bat on the squad. And he chokes up an inch or more. No wonder he freakin grounds out to the left side ad nauseum. He can’t reach anything else…
Down 3-0, the other worthless cocksucker swings at a pitch 8″ off the plate on a 3-1 count.
Good call there, skipper. Have any more winners for later today at Del Mar?
High levels of heat and humiliated relatives just ain’t right for the Giants. And i do agree that it”s a shitty LU today. Eli and Rowand should NEVER be in the lineup at the same time. Something ain’t working for Zits, but that Mexican kid is just eating it up.
Agreed, but you left out FS…those 3 guys are as bad if not worse than the 3 A’s guys with the low OB and OPS under .700 I capped on few days ago.
It’s fucking amazing how many balls find a hole in the left side of our infield.
Buster hit the ball softer than Rowand. EOE suckitude today. Garcia is making it look way too damn easy.
41 pitches thru 4. Zitshit almost had that many last inning. Get the pen ready.
Nice job by the Gs to take pitches, walk, scratch their ass, whatever, NOT, to give Zito more of a blow between innings after a 30+ pitch marathon. No surprise if gets hammered here..
Niner game start yet?
Fuck this shit Alan Craig???? Going Yard Get Zito out of there.
Give it a break, Denny. It’s on the players to perform when called on. “Personal responsibilty”..and 10 wouldn’t be enough today
Rowand needs to get together with Jimmy Johnson for one of those dinner events.. Jenny Craig takers you deep, just go for the deep blue rest, Zitfuck.
It’s getting near late August and we have 1-2 starters who can’t even get through 5 innings. Time to see how the local Little League team is doing.
I swear, as I just finished typing “hammered”, the dinger gets slammed. So predictable now with Zito, this game is done. I predicted a 2-4 trip, looks like it’ll happen barring a miracle comeback with this lame lineup. Until the Reds, adios….
There is ZERO excuse for this shit from the Zhitter, so don’t fucking try.
looks like batting practice out there
and Kyp says: the giants are starting
to let the game get away from them
If you didn’t know better, you might suspect the Giants are throwing the game. If they WERE throwing it, how would they play worse? … swing at ball after ball, give up a parade of two-strike hits, homeruns to stiffs … this game has it all, if by “all” you mean nothing resembling a professional effort.
Any LU he puts out there is lame against a lefty unless the RHers hit, boys. Burrell, Posey, Guillen aren’t doing any better than your usual whipping boys so give THAT a fucking break, as well.
I am sure Zito is trying to help Timmy’s problem by showing him he ain’t the worse pitcher in ST Louis.
barf
They’re melting! What a world! Ooooooooooooooh!
Had him easy. Lazy tag from Fruckie.
In the gym this AM they had on the Doors movie (VH1 I think) with Kilmer…..music sounded great, but I only got as far as them playing the Sunset doing Break on Through….any of the rest of it worth renting? Who is GF, btw? She does a good job of playing a space cadet…act or not.
When Zitoid took the mound today, they must’ve played “The End” quietly back in the Giants clubhouse….
And “The Soft Parade” when the lineup was posted.
Meg Ryan. Yes, rent it.
I liked the movie, but really loved ‘Rattle and Hum’ by U2
can’t miss with those Morrison songs, can ya?
I’ve always believed a slump in Aug means a great streak into
WTF Franchez doesn’t get the tag down!
a slump now can herald a win streak through Sept and Oct.
Prove me right SF
I’m glad they took it off channelsurfing…
Dammit! When is the last time this team had a good series against a playoff caliber team? I stupidly thought that Zito might have a good game today to send the Giants back home on a high note. 2-4 on a tough roadie is not pathetic, but they had two chances to make it a .500 trip and are blowing it.
It’s OK to look at the comparative hitting and pitching stats. All well and good. But, as I said a few days ago, at that time SF was 21-31 vs. teams with a winning record. A bit worse after this six game roadie. This team does not perform against good competition that puts pressure on the defense and pitching, and to win requires consistent scoring and run manufacturing/good AB work against good pitching. Couple that with the starting pitching headed toward Tierra del Fuego, and you’ve got a prescription for barely making/missing the WC, and if fortunate to make it, a likely early exit anyway…
OPS
Rowand .681
Franchez .645
Panda .725
Whitey .705
Juan .739
Guillen .755
Bochy can’t hit for ’em that’s for sure, but Sabean controls his choices. This shit is on him.
The worst they’ll be after this (if they don’t rally) is two out and coming home for 9. It’s on the FreakMeister.
How soon will it be for an easy triple play by Guillen? This dude is slower then Bengie. How could that be possible?
Because he’s injured. Sabes specializes in acquring injured dudes (see Franchez), though at least this one seems to be able to hit…
He doesn’t wear a bra
No, it’s on the players. *TEAM* OPS is .731, slightly above the NL average. You guys always go Nelly when they aren’t hitting but they are in fact, squarely middle of the pack-which everyone here would have taken in a heart beat at the start of the season. 4.30 RPG.. gee, who told ya? Nope: they win if the Top 3 get it back, they’re out if at least two don’t. It’s on Tim, Zitfuck, Cain. Period.
I wish we had some hitters. Because if we did, we sure would have won today’s game. Gosh, we really need hitting. Not pitching. Hitters hitters hitters. Sabean is such a dunce.
(extreme sarcasm, not directed at michael, but using his point)
My post is wrong. We don’t need pitching. WE need our pitching to stop sucking so fucking much. Our hitting will be fine. It’s been said all year, we live and we die by our pitching, and right now, they are letting us down. Twin said it though, we come home for a few games in a row, what do you wanna bet we pick up a few Ws?
that we should not be capitalized.
The goddamn Friars have a lower avg., lower OBP., and a lower SLG% than we do, but yet they’ve scored four more runs than we have this yr. That fact pisses me off to no end. This shit has gotta stop.
Coming in to today’s game, they were on pace to give up the same number of runs as last year’s team.
Why keep up this little charade? Send in Ishi, Font, Nate immediately.
This shit has gotta stop
————————————–
That reminds me,..I was in Mexico City a couple weeks ago and ordered a scotch the rocks…
Giants need a reliever. K.O. Pectate…
Middle of the pack? They’re fucking 11th in runs scored. How the fuck is that middle of the pack?
And yes, I wholeheartedly agree it’s on the starts to right this ship, but I figured you have that covered today, so I’m going a different route and bitch about our shitty hitting. 11th in runs scored. I guess if you look at our last 3 yrs. (13th, 15th and 15th) it’s an improvement. What time does the parade start?
as a team this years stats show middle for the Giants in most stats; but they are first in our hearts.
shit! aren’t we the guys that get the hits while our starters hold the line? Francez barely moved towards that ball covering second. What does LaRussa know that we don’t?
TF is right, pitching has been bad enough to offset any offensive steam we may have. And this team is right at average v mlb teams and right at what we did last year as a team.
is this the point where we leave the reliever in and let everyone else rest?
8th is 11 more runs. Average is 535. They have scored 535. They are middle of the pack, fuckwad
Tean has scored significantly more than last year: .25 runs per game.
Not too hard to improve off of last yrs. figures. That’s like saying Shaq improved his FT% 5% from 46 to 51% Move over Rick Barry.
the thing that hurts the most
from my greedy POV
is ESPN will thing ignoring the Giants even in important games is justified
shit
