A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

*L*–incecum……

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 22, 2010

Welll, he wasn’t horrible. He wasn’t all that great, either. Bottom line is that Lincecum got out-pitched again and we get another L for his *efforts*.  Unfortunately, Tim’s starts are starting to feel a lot like the “Zito starts” from his first couple of years with us. Tight. Everyone on edge. All eyes on the MPH board. That’s not the way we want this team playing during a pennant race. Tim’s starts are not only ineffective, they’ve become a distraction to the team…..

Speaking of Zito, today we get to lean on him for a critically needed quality start. Ugh……

Willied, if you dig The Doors, the movie is worth renting. I thought it was really good, and Val Kilmer does a lot of his own singing in it. Meg Ryan plays his GF, Pam Corson.

Runs per game in the NL has gone down this year from 4.43 to 4.36. The Giants’ pitching has gotten relatively worse, the hitting relatively better. During the off season, I mentioned that I’d factor a marginal drop off in the pitching in to the make up of the roster. From my POV, the question remains: has Sabes made the right moves to build an offense that takes this team into the playoffs?

Ross is definitely a better bet than Guillen to provide some help, but he is another low OBP hacker.

I’d cry if Rowand didn’t get any more starts. How the hell could I make jokes about his .292 OBP% if he’s not in the lineup? I would not, could not and should not rip Rowand behind his back. What’s even a bigger joke than Rowand’s numbers is that according to ESPN, 2.5% of their fantasy baseball owners have Rowand on their team. I have one thing to say about that fact: Time to thin the herd people, time to thin the herd.

I don’t think this team ever mails it in … they just take an ineffective approach to the game and then are unwilling/unable to change. You simply can’t make 27 outs on 89 pitches and have a guy record his first career complete game (with a tight strike zone no less) if you’re putting out a professional physical AND mental effort.

Sadly, you know you’re going to get a certain percentages of games like this with this roster. To that extent, it’s true that you just have to move on. They’ve made it clear they aren’t going to change.

I didn’t post this at the time, but I didn’t like them getting Guillen because it put dead weight at the corner OF positions and changed the nature of the line-up. We were never fast but we were sharp and played smart. I think we’ve lost that defensively. Agree with several of you that Sanchez needs to sit like Rowand now that Uribe’s back. And I’d play more of Nate and Ishi because they need more ABs to get sharp if we make it to October.

  62. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 22, 2010 at 2:47 pm

Ross does present a mild upgrade over Rowand though he is a strikeout machine and his fair to moderate power numbers took a dip this year. He can steal the occasional base so obviously he would not be dead in the OF. Rowand is so burned here that they may as well dump him right now on a DFA unless they decide to do a quick flip on Ross. If Aaron DFAs it won’t be the first time SF had to eat a big salary. It doesn’t compare with the salary eating done by the LaBumbos, but then the Dogs represent pretty stiff competition in that category.

Only other conceivable option to bring Ross onto the active roster is to promptly dump Mota and go with only 6 relievers for the next nine games. If the starters could revert to form, that would be no big problem. So Sabean kept Ross from the Dagos and now he has to figure out what to do.

I don’t know who they toss aside to make room for Ross. Unless they trade him immediately for something, but that makes little sense. Maybe Nate, but they’d have to DFA and get nothing for him, while I think he has some value in trade in the offseason. Maybe Guillen goes, he can hit but his D borders on stand up comedy, and letting him go won’t cost much. Or, somebody goes on the DL — Rent?…

I’ll tell you another thing, I bet a lot of teams mail it in on Sundays. I bet “under” in Sunday games for a while– somewhat profitable. I’d love to see ave # of runs scored in the league on sun and compare it to other days of the week. No idea how to get that stat tho

Hey, Loo. A certain jock just recorded their first win at this yrs. meet at the Spa.
Took a photo just for you.: http://tinyurl.com/2bruy8n

And Jesus H. people, stop with all the who’s gonna be back next yr. BS. Makes it sound like this yr. is already over. They’ll be plenty of time for that shit later. Concentrate your efforts for the immediate task at hand: Make Alex Smith stop sucking.

Thanks, Denny. I was happy for her. She rarely rides anything under 30-1.

Better question, who the hell is going to be the SS next season? If Crawford needs more seasoning, which he probably will. There’s no one to fill the slot.

Rowand being released would be no surprise at all. Face it, Ross is the same guy, just a little younger. They’re eating Rowand’s contract in a couple months regardless.

  71. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on August 22, 2010 at 3:06 pm

If they eat all that $ rowand is still owed it’ll be a first. The giants will release you in your last yr or so, ala Dave Roberts, but their history is that they hold on to the bitter end (or close to it)

  72. Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 22, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Well, for the amount of $ involved, Roberts was a first.
Ross has played RF and CF so either Rowand or Nate could go.I just think it’s Rowand because he now has no future here AND no trade value. Otherwise, they bail on Guillen. Fuck, who knows, who cares? As a 5th fucking OFer he’s fine.

From yesterday, Flavor and Chuck, get picks in. I’m awarding this regardless of the number of participants. Deadline 8/29 3:00 P.M. Tomorrow we pick up my daughter at the airport and straight to UCSF.
“Here are the Specs, this one includes everything. The contest is simple: pick their regular season record. So you get a mulligan from your preseason pick. Tie breaker: total runs scored FOR THE YEAR. Everyone, including past winners, is eligible. Email: twinfan1@hotmail.com with your pick. If you win, you will have to include a shipping address. I don’t give a shit if it’s yours or not. When signed for, it’s yours, or whoevers. Flavor and Chuck: I want one of you to win so give it your best. Or in Chuck’s case, maybe have one of the kids do it :

If they release Rohand during this season I’ll bow down towards ATT and begin chanting a mantra to Sabes . More likely somebody gets hurt on the plane ride to SFO and has to go on the DL…

    • Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 22, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Not out of the question, either. Nate or Aaron or Guillen could develop a “hurt side”.

This is the kind of situation where MLB would do well to get into the 21st century re: trading and picks. If MLB allowed trading players straight up for picks, you could do something like trade Nate for a 2011 2nd rounder or 2012 first rounder, a conditional pick depending on future playing time, etc. But no. With options gone, you’re limited to DFA, or fake an injury for the DL, etc. Then, six years from now, you could say — hey, Nate turned into the Joe Dokes pick, now Joe’s our starting SS, etc. — what a great trade…
