A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Padres Could Easily Finish in 3rd Place….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 6, 2010

I was half-way listening to Marty Lurie in the car yesterday and I THINK he said that only one team in the history of baseball has ever lost 10 in a row and still made the playoffs–1951 Giants (I think). And the Padres are forced to look around the locker room and not be thinking “Ok, this will pass, we are the best team, etc…”. They’re looking around going “uh oh, this is what everyone said we would be before the season started”.  If anything, we need to worry a little about Colorado– they’re playing well and if we get hit by San Diego on their freefall down it’s totally possible that the Rockies slide right on up to the top of the division…….

Depending on the outcome of the next couple of days we could literally be in a position to BURY the Padres in our upcoming seires with them later in the week……

10 freaking games lost in a row. Amazing. 80% of the Giants fan base would have committed suicide if that had happened to us……

Maybe histrionic predispositions toward suicide define Giants fans while inclinations tending toward the murderous (in fantasy) (toward their own team, no less) define Phillies fans? Just a theory.

Interesting broadcast last night….after first couple innings Hershiser was mostly silent about Sanchez, so Miller could weave in his stories about all the Giants, and Morgan could marvel at and break down the swings of Huff, Uribe, Sando and Posey. At one point late in the game Morgan marvelled at how well Sanchez was pitching and said “You could see how he pitched a no-hitter” and even Hershiser had to agree. And he had no hit stuff last night, too. Hope the East Coasters got a whiff of that.

Orel also stuck up for Colletti and Torre, which imo is complete BS. Not replacing Hudson and Wolf, and doing little to plan for less Manny (after his sub par post suspension 2009), and their shitty PS cost them dearly. All the late moves should have been done a long time ago (Liilly, Posednick, Barajas), and Torre’s treatment of Kuo as opposed to how he has handled the rest of the pen is certainly open to question. They are a fading 4th in the division, barely above .500, a major disappointment.

True. True. And just imagine if it was Sabathia or Beckett or some other Red Sox or Yankee pitching like Sanchez: they’d be enshrining him in Cooperstown.

One game out. Four of the five starting pitchers have been on their games lately. Hitting has been spotty, but a definite upgrade from early season when the rotation was fab, but starving for support. Team has been gritty and persistent and has proven they can mount a rally ~ and to generally hold on when they have taken a lead. This year’s boys of summer have lost ten in a row and now the men of September are poised to move on in and take over.

Arizona stands in the way. Giants will face three young pitchers who fazed them a bit when the Snakes came to town in August. This is a much different Az rotation than the one the team stomped in their desert den back in July. But then Timmy is back now that its September and four-fifths of the SF rotation has reverted to form. Too, the Giants now possess more than a handful of batters who can hammer that horsehide.

So its duel in the desert while westwardly the Dagos and the LaBumbos will be locked in a losing match. One of the two will have to win. Rarely, i’ll be rooting for the Bums. So will most Giants fans. Momentum favors the Giants. Let’s keep it going today and tomorrow, cause Wednesday’s starter is either Dr. Zicasso or Mr. Zits and all bets are off on that contest.

Pawlie, I can’t speak for Phillie fans, but I’d commit suicide before I’d ever boo Santa Claus.
That is just plain wrong. For shame. For shame.

And I think Flav is being kind with the 80%. If our Giants lost 10 in a row, I know one ledge in particular where the avg. would be 100%. One certain individual would have gone out there and gave it a 110%. 110%? I hate that cliché. I’ll be sure to put that stoopid saying in my back pocket when I jump.

I thought Sanchez was treated pretty well by the broadcast crew last night, including what I heard of Hershiser. When a guy is lights out like that, what the hell else are you going to say? The guy is maddening to say the least, but when he pitches like he did last night you can see why the Giants won’t trade him. God help the NL if he ever gains any consistency.

Twin, have I told you how much I LOVE JONATHAN SANCHEZ?! 😀

  7. JBat's avatar JBat said, on September 6, 2010 at 9:54 am

What a stunning turnaround this has been. The Padres go nearly the entire season without losing more than three in a row, then break out a 10 game skid to start September. The Giants haven’t been playing great lately, and they lose in a bad game to start the Dodger series. But then Juan Uribe hits another shot heard around the world (okay, a wee bit of hyperbole) to get them off the schneid, then follows that up with another huge shot on Sunday. And Dirty Sanchez looks like the second coming of Steve Carlton. Just like that we’re a game out.

This is going to be one hell of a last three weeks.

One thing about a winning team: The heroics usually come from all over the lineup and from throughout the staff. Though individuals will be preeminent contributors from time to time, like Uribe most recently, the big winners usually have a raft of guys who rise to the occasion and provide the muscle or the moxie to win the game.

Who will it be today? Huff, for one, is overdue and even Torres has been less than torrid the past few games. I get the feeling somebody is gonna pick the team up today, but can’t identify those blips on my radar screen. Anybody care to speculate?

Posted Uribe’s #’s from last Sept (8hrs,.970 ops), but he’s come up big several other times, most notably in 05 when the Sox won the series.

That yr, Uribe had 7 of his 16 hrs in Sept.

Pablo is still due for a real hot streak that make his numbers a little more respectable by season’s end. He had a good August, and he’s primed to make a difference over the last few weeks.

Posey’s current BA/OBP are similar to Sandoval’s last year. Admittedly, you can see how Posey will probably adjust over time as he gets fewer good pitches to hit. He just doesn’t look like a bad ball hitter. Right now, he’s seeing a significantly higher percentage of strikes than the average hitter. Still, it’s another example of the stats telling a story a little different from the label.

I pointed this out to one of he other Room Bers currenly posting in Room A, Kat: If they don’t limit Bumgarner now, there is little chance he’d be available for the postseason. Don’t give me a dumbfuck anti-pitch count whine. So what behoves them is to skip two Bumgarner starts the rest of the way and simply have a quick hook if Zitfuck falters. Skipping Zito starts now only ensures that Zitshit will be wel rested to faceplant in the playoffs. If you want the option of Bumgarner going in the postseason, hope they skip a couple starts now. A 12-0 lead after 5 today wouldn’t hurt the cause, either…

Yeah maybe that true Twin….The PS faltered down the stretch last year when overworked. With Zits,Bochy will continue the choke collar approach in his starts with all BP guys locked and loaded early. They might also want to monitor Dirty as well,he’s past last year’s total in innings pitched,so it’s uncharted territory for him as well.

  23. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 6, 2010 at 12:38 pm

LESS viable. They can skip two starts without anyone else pitching on short rest and don’yt have to worry about a game situation making pulling him a bad call.

Barry Zito is the devil. As I’ve posted seveal times, these second half improvements in previous years have simply been ruses to enable him to inflict even more pain in the subsequent year. Now Beelzebub’s plan is nearing fruition if he is not stopped. Having just turned in his worst month, Lucifer intends to be just good enough in these last few starts to tempt Bochy into starting him in the postseason when his greatest ruin will then be laid upon us. The only way to stop it is to limit Bumgarner’s innings now, let the Son of Perdition get his adequate starts in September, *then* pull the plug on the Potentate of Darkness…

I can see Zito putting in a decent start in Diego in that yard — for no more than 5 innings. I don’t see how Zito would not start in the first round of the playoffs, if SF makes it. It would have to be a home start. It is the Giants way, and should it happen, it will be absurd on its face. It would go against the age old wisdon of putting players in a position to succeed. Nonetheless, Bochy would have an electronic choke collar on him…
