A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

ROY?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 22, 2010

Heyward V Posey. I’m not including Garcia because I think that for a pitcher to win it he has to be dominating since he only plays in 20% of the games. Outside of the 1-off game where he carved us up in 9 innings, Garcia is a 5-6 inning guy. Hardly dominating….

Posey: .324ba, .895OPS, 15 bombs, 62 RBIs in 364 at bats

heyward: .286ba, .876OPS, 18 bombs, 9 swipes, 71RBIs in 482 at bats.

Give Buster another 118 at bats and he’d easily blow by Heyward in every category except SB’s.  And Buster is an east coast guy (sorta) so he’s definitely known across America, it’s not like the west coast bias will hit him that hard. But, in the end, I think Heyward will win it. He’s had a very strong July-Sept and he’s been hyped since Opening Day. It’s too bad Buster didn’t have a level playing field, had he been here from Day 1 I think he wins it easily…..

So who does the ROY voting? If its deep dyed baseball people they will also take account of the fact that catching is well and away the toughest position for a rookie to break into as a regular. That says nothing of excelling behind the plate. Posey has done it all. Last night he called a 4 pitcher shoutout plus throwing out the Cubs fastest runner in a steal attempt, plus, by the way, hit the game winning homer.

Perhaps Buster will need to throw out Heyward in the NLDS or NLCS to drive the point home.

There is some buzz building on ESPN for ROY for Buster. Numbers are there to deserve it, but Heyward certainly has been a media darling this year.

I always forget as well when the writers vote for this (stix, I think the writer’s vote for most of the baseball awards) if it is before the post-season starts, which I assume is the case.

Buster pitch calling in the 9th with Wilson shows how much he has progressed. I cant remember who it was they went super high fastball with with two strikes and worked like a charm.

I assume Buster stays behind the plate with Sanchez tonight…

Excellent grind-it-out win by the boys last night. Cain has been nails lately, as has the whole staff. I wish Matt could have gotten the win, but I’ll take this result any time.

Based on the numbers Flav posted, Posey has had the better season, but I’m sure Heyward is the media darling. He plays for the Bravos, after all. But Posey is clutch, clutch, clutch, has a better BA, and plays a tougher position.

Mike, if you see this later, I’m sorry to hear about your uncle. My condolences to your family.

Flav, I made the same point a couple days ago. It’s too close to call right now but considering the difference of games and ABs, I still think Posey’s #’s are a bit more impressive. Plus being a catcher. And I don’t know if I totally buy the east coast prejudice. If it were a stone cold fact, no way Lincecum wins the CY last year

    • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 22, 2010 at 12:07 pm

The votes were split among the St. Louis pitchers last year and thet helped him win…wasn’t there also a weird vote for someone did not put Wainwright in his top 5 and that gave Timmy enough votes?

  6. Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on September 22, 2010 at 8:30 am

I agree that Heyward had the hype at the start of the year and I think he is more than just hype. So is Posey, if he keeps doing what he’s doing he’s going to be noticed. I’m thinking it’ll come down to these final two weeks with both teams gunning for the playoffs.

    Good point Ted.

Oakland A’s have won a few. Bailey last yr the 7th A’s player since 86.

A dodger won it every yr from 92-96.

Agree with Bozo. I think it’s still very much up for grabs.

  8. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on September 22, 2010 at 8:54 am

There’s still time left in the season, and Buster certainly can finish strong to seal the deal. But, yeah, the fact that he catches should be a big factor. Esp when you look at staff ERA.

I mean, if Heyward was a CF, that would carry a little more weight, but RF compared to C is a big difference.

  9. Flavor's avatar Big Giggity said, on September 22, 2010 at 9:07 am

I don’t think the 32 voters look at shit like staff ERA and how strong his arm is, how he handles the staf, etc. They look at all the flashy stats– HR’s, OPS, for pitchers they look at W’s and k’s– surprised that Baggs sees Garcia as worthy–he’s not for the reasons I listed in today’s post, especially when you consider how strong this year’s NL class is…

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 22, 2010 at 9:17 am

Baggarly said yesterday in his ExtraBaggs he was “leaning” to voting Garcia, now considering Posey. I called him out on it in a post. What is it with these Bay Area writers? They feel that they can’t vote for a guy they see all the time out of some false sense of possible bias? Ridiculous…

  11. Flavor's avatar Big Giggity said, on September 22, 2010 at 9:52 am

and fucking Garcia isn’t even worthy! How can a guy who barely makes it through 6 in almost every single start he makes be the ROY? And he’s only playing in 20% of the teams games? What a joke….

    • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 22, 2010 at 12:10 pm

Garcia had a good half year and that is it…and look how the Cards are folding and Garcia is probably going to be shut down. I dont see how that merits ROY..

  12. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 22, 2010 at 9:57 am

Bringing in Velez for “defense” last night in the 9th was to me, weird. Any fly ball is an adventure for this kid, yet Bochy puts him in with the slimmest of leads Made more sense to put in Rohand and move Ross to LF. I hope I don’t see that again soon…

  13. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 22, 2010 at 10:08 am

That was indeed a scary sight, Snarkk, especially on that fly ball to end the 8th.

There’s no question Posey should be ROY. I doubt the writers would look at this, but as Baggs pointed out: Giants have gone from 40-37 to 85-66 with Buster as full-time catcher. ‘Nuff said.

This kid is so damn good, the only surprising thing about Buster’s HR last night was that he didn’t call it.

by the way, he will win the ROY…

  15. JBat's avatar JBat said, on September 22, 2010 at 10:14 am

Vis a vis Posey for ROY, I think BW said it best:

“To me, it’s a no-brainer,” the closer said. “You’ve got to look at the aspect of where (Posey) plays. Infielders and outfielders don’t have to do much. The game is between the mound and home plate.

“The catcher has more responsibility than anybody out there on the field. Look at most of the catchers around the league. They’re going to be veteran guys. We’re asking a 23-year-old rookie to take over a leadership role. The guy is hitting for average and he comes up with timely hits. It doesn’t matter if he hasn’t played the whole season.”

  16. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on September 22, 2010 at 10:16 am

For almost two months now, as i have hung on every pitch of most games, particularly when the Giants are at bat, there is one and only one player whom i expect to get a key, clutch hit: Buster. Nuff said.

  17. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on September 22, 2010 at 10:22 am

Yeah, I had to scratch my head about Velez being put in LF for defense. I almost would have rather seen Burrell stay in. With the swirling wind that pop up in the 8th had me clenching my cheeks.

Yeah, I might be biased, but Buster should win ROY hands down. Not only has he helped carry this team by playing the toughest postion and batting cleanup, he also played a very nice 1st base while we had to wait for Bengie’s exit. Also, Heyward might have started the season, but he also missed some time on the DL if I remember right. Posey can barely get a rest he’s so important to this team’s playoff chances.

  18. Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on September 22, 2010 at 10:39 am

ROY doesn’t matter to me and I like Posey. I just hope he stays healthy. I hope he has a long career with the Giants. I hope for a lot of winning seasons and more new young players coming on board.

  19. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on September 22, 2010 at 10:56 am

Snarkk: Check out Baggs’ Postgame Notes. He’s so high on Posey right now that the 747 and Airbus routes have had to be changed so there are no midair collisions.

It would not surprise me a bit if Buster also got one or more MVP votes. Should the Giants go into the Postseason he would deserve such a vote. If they advance to the NLCS, it should be clear to all that the big difference maker for this team happened at the beginning of July when Posey took over regular catching duties and then proceeded to carry the team with his stick for that month. Giants make the WS and Posey is the actual, if not voted-in MVP. World Champs and whether he gets the award or not, baseball insiders would all know the identity of the most valuable player in the game.

  20. swickman's avatar swickman said, on September 22, 2010 at 11:21 am

Lincecum can start three more times if Bochy skips someone in the rotation. Of course, Bochy hasn’t really skipped starts this season – and it’s paid off with a great September ERA, as Mattalac points out. However, I’d be okay if he skipped Bumgarner on Thursday to set up a potential Lincecum/Latos matchup on the last day of the season.

The added bonus would be no Zito in the SD series. Pitching matchups look decent the rest of the way. Unless CO moves Jimenez up a start, the Giants won’t face him next week. And Cain should be well rested after throwing only 82 and 91 in his last two starts.

Sure feels like ROY voting comes down to performances in the last 10+ games and who makes the playoffs. A big push by Buster and the Giants and he could take it. If they don’t make the playoffs, that could spell the loss of the ROY, too.

Velez is a good defensive LFer. Shut the fuck up… Also on Baggs’ vote. Some of you already made idiots of yourselves trashing Henry on his Cy vote last vote. Don’t do it again, this ain’t “vote for Home Boy.. ”
Buster as only one for a key hit? How quickly a Gomez is forgotten…Andres had HUGE ones, and some walk offs to boot. He’s still the MVP , only question is who’s the 2.

It would be living dangerously, but we may need the Padres or Rockies to hang in for the Wild Card race to ensure we dont play Philly that first series.

I am hoping that the Rockies split these next two in AZ and we can do the same and maintain that 2.5 game lead going into Friday. I think then if we lose two in CO, we would still be a 1.5 up with 6 to play. I like those numbers especially with us at home against AZ and SD. Can the Dodgers man up and take the next two? Probably not. So the standings heading into Friday could still be us up a half game on SD and 2.5 on Rockies. If the Reds take two in SD and Rockies take two, we would be half game up on SD and 1.5 on Colorado on Monday morning.

We take two in Colorado as I predict, we push the Rockies to 3.5 behind and hopefully the Padres to 1.5 behind…

UZR is hated by many here because they’ere too fucking stupid to understand it, but EV was one of the best LFers in the NL last year. It’s difficult for the dumbfucks because they don’t account for balls a guy can’t get to. UZR accounts for far more than even Range Factor and Zone Rating. If you dismiss UZR, you pretty much have to dismiss any stat beyond Room B comprehension. Cy goes to most wins, forget the rest of it. Hell, without some of the advanced numbers, Tim may have ZERO CYs..

  30. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 22, 2010 at 1:12 pm

Do you have how many games he played in left last year? I just cant remember and still stuck at work. Does UZR or any other stat track how often a defensive player zig-zags in the outfield trying to track down a ball?

Wasn’t Velez also converted to the OF so he really has no history of playing in the OF consistently through the minors?

Does make the most sense to stick Rowand in center and Ross in left ofr defensive repalcement time regardless of what UZR says. That I think you will agree with…

    • Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 22, 2010 at 1:18 pm

I also was being completely tongue in cheeck with measuring zig-zags, but often times relying on numbers instead of your own eyes makes one think there is a reality when there is not…hence Eugenio Velez is as natural to the outfield as Sarah Palin is to…I wont go there per your political edict!

Just what the Giants could use right now. A Festivus Miracle!!

  37. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on September 22, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Don’t expect Torres to make a Friday night appearance in the Box of Rox. Saturday night? Iffy. The more moderate running and “light” hitting, the better. Might even be a good temp for Mota and Affeldt for the right-left look and at full game speed and cut. Little like extended ST.

So if SF wins either of the first two in Denver and has won either or both of these next two with the not to be overlooked Cubs (it was hard to resist saying “Cubbies” and now i went and done did dood it.); there would be no pressing need for El Torrid to see game action in Denver.

You gotta figure so long as the team’s not hurtin, then there’s for certain no needful need for the Andres advantage at the possible cost of some nasty personal pain for him and maybe worse. So let’s say the team doesn’t do really well, but does cop two of the next 5. That one would be Bochy’s poser. Helluva decision time cause from what i’ve seen of the guts, grit and integrity of our center fielder and leadoff man, he’d be feeling ‘fine’ as hell anywhere near the manager or any of his coaches and staff.

Giants win 3 of the next five and Torres might could sit clear through the Arizona series, particularly as it’s at McCovey Cove. If there is any fight left in the Friars come next weekend it would be a fine time for a cameo or maybe even a co-starring production with that Georgia boy who practically did it all last night.

Team just keeps winning through the next 11 without needing an upwards Andres adjustment and he’ll be all healed-up, fresh, frisky and hungry in time for the NLDS. If there’s need for a one on one offset for Heyward, should the Braves be the opponent, Torres has a team-mate he might like to help out. Baseball is just a tad bit like chess. When you got your major pieces on the board, you can pack a lot of punch. Giants play the next few games like they know their sparkplug will be there for the BIG Show and even the opening acts and they will enjoy some torrid moments in October.

Velez was “one of the best” LFers in the NL last year? That’s not contrarian, that’s just plain laughable baloney. How many here want him in LF in the bottom of the 9th, up by one, in the final game of the NLCS? Nobody. If he’s one of the best LFs in the NL, he doesn’t spend all this year sweating in Fresno. Nor does he drop can o corn fly balls, or have an allergic reaction to the outfield wall when he’s close. This is all stuff we’ve actually seen, and more to the point, Bochy and Sabes have seen. So fuck that UZR. He’s below average, with great speed and poor instincts, until he shows otherwise that he’s used the latest Fresno incarceration to eliminate the physical and mental fuckups…

Just the numbers fuckwad. His UZR150 was +40 in LF, in CF and RF is where he’s had problems..
But anyway, here’s what you are going to do: shut the fuck up. You are with PGFuck now: do not respond, even in passing, to my posts. He was inserted in LF because he is far and away superior to Burrell defensively.

Amy G. looks good with her hair pulled back. Nice earrings as well tonight, very “Aztecian.”

But I don’t think Amy and her earrings would approve of our situational hitting thus far.
    Stink, meet ice.

Sanchez trapped in the Fuck You Dome.

How can a guy have a name like that? You gotta change it when you move here, dude.

Down and in … rarely good to lefties, alas.

Last inning Brenly said that batters have a .500-something average vs. Sanchez on 3-1, highest in the NL. So of course Fukudome launches a 3-1 pitch into the seats.

Anyone care to call our next HR? ‘Cause if we don’t homer, we don’t score.

I’ll go with JuanGone in the 5th with a Louisville Slugger.

I don’t know why the Giants have more discipline some days than others, but again tonight, when the pitcher knows he doesn’t have to throw a strike, it gets easy even for the run of the mill chuckers.
