A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Decisions, Decisions……take 2

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 5, 2010

Baggs has a thread about the possibility of the Giants leaving their 3 highest paid players off the post season roster (Zito, Rowand and Renteria). There’s no way that goes down, especially with Bochy’s love affair with “track record”—The only way Renteria is left off is if he physically can’t play. Edgar is one of the most celebrated clutch hitters in the history of the post season—if he can play, he will….

Zito would go as the 4 in Atlanta, if it got that far. There’s no way, right? He’s HORRENDOUS on the road. And his confidence is shot if his body language from his last pathetic start is any indication. He can’t relieve in any important circumstance. I suppose they could use him as a long reliever if any of the Big 3 get rocked early and we’re down like 5-0 in the 3rd inning. Otherwise, why would you ever play him?…”track record”. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…..

Rowand. Goddamn, what do you do with Rowand. If it were me I would put him on the roster and leave Guillen off. I might even give him a start in one of the first 2 games considering his numbers against the Lowe and Hudson. Guillen’s numbers suck against them plus he’s 1 for his last 21. And he’s slow. And his defense sucks. And, frankly, his attitude is surly at best and disruptive at worst. Rowand brings you better defense, a significantly better clubhouse presence and attitude and he’s got as much if not more power than Guillen does right now. Guillen was brought in to give our line up some pop. That didn’t happen. He played 42 games for us and he homered in 3 of them. Thanks, but no thanks. We’ve got several guys that can give you that or better (Ross, Rowand, Nate) and those same guys give you a lot more in the outfield and in the clubhouse. This decision seems like a no-brainer to me……..

Maybe Zito’s been given notice he’s off the roster. So his new job is working the wordpress blog controls..,.

Oh well, I’ll post it again. That’ll make it twice that no one reads it..

Here’s how I think it goes down, not necessarily how it should go down.:

Pitchers (11) Timmy, Horse, Dirrrty, Bum, Mota, Ramirez, Casilla, JA, LOOGY, Romo, B-Wheezy

    Catchers (2) Buster, (NO) Whitey

Infield (6) Orson, Juan-Gone, little runt, Huffster, Font, Rent

Outfield (6) The Bat, Yungo, Guillen, Ross, Rowand, Shitholtz

  10. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on October 5, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Sub out Ishi for Guillen . . . and sure.

Oh, Dennis . . . they could always leave Whitehead off, and use Panda as the backup catcher. That way they get Burriss in there (or Gino) . . .

  11. Michael's avatar Michael said, on October 5, 2010 at 3:11 pm

Fuck, just dump Eli and keep 12 pitchers. If they keep Rent and Fontenot they can cover if Panda has to catch. I’ll handle notifying Vera, her ticker has been iffy of late.

  16. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 5, 2010 at 3:55 pm

OK, I will say this about the roster. I like Fontenot, don’t see how he can’t be in. He’s versatile for 2nd and 3rd in case of injury or double switch, and takes a good AB for a PH role. No power, but if you need a single or get someone on base or move the runner at minimum, he usually is a hard out for the opponent…

  17. Michael's avatar Michael said, on October 5, 2010 at 4:06 pm

I don’t think Fontenot is even under consideration for being left out.

  18. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 5, 2010 at 4:11 pm

Looks like the Braves switched up for Games 2 and 3. It’ll be Hanson for 2, Huddy for 3.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 5, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Makes sense, that evens up their rest. This series is going to be torture. Both squads have killer starters. Timely hitting, D, and the Pens should decide it….

  19. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on October 5, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Yesterday I saw Hudson listed for game 3, then it changed. Now it’s changed again. What’s the deal? He pitched Sunday (gave up two HRs in 7). Game 2 of the series on Friday would follow four days rest.

I totally agree w/ Magnus regarding Guillen and Rowand. No way I’d keep Guillen in, tho’ they likely will. Why? Why did he even play those last several games? I have every confidence Rowand can be one of those mystical postseason surprises. It happens every time. A totally unexpected guy become the hero, another the goat. It’s a given. (Wouldn’t be a bad just-for-fun contest.) I mean, Dave Winfield? 1 for 21 or whatever. And remember Mark Lemke, that pesky Eckstein-like guy for the 1995 Braves, the guy from Utica, NY? Beware the Mark Lemke Effect.

  23. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 5, 2010 at 6:46 pm

really? hasn’t really sounded like that from listening to the radio today and the Bochy sound bites. But who knows, maybe they would do it. But I will say this: If it’s an elimination game then they better have a plan in place for what to do if he fucks it up. He almost ruined the end of the season with that gutless, scared performance on Sat. Can you imagine the season ticket holder backlash if he’s trotted out there in a must win game and he “avoids contact” and walks a bunch of guys in only to be replaced by Chad Zerbe or whoever in the 3rd? He would “Solomon Torres” himself with a performance like that and it would literally force the team’s hand on whether they would bring him back next year……..

  24. Michael's avatar Michael said, on October 5, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Bochy said it as per Henry and Baggs.

  25. Michael's avatar Michael said, on October 5, 2010 at 6:56 pm

    EZ solution: sweep.

  26. PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on October 5, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Chad Zerbe actually won a WS game for us, didn’t he? I love the neologism of turning a proper noun into a verb: “He would Solomon Torres himself…”

    Other takes like that:

He Jose Cruzed that easy catch.
He Joe Nathaned himself off the mound.
She would Barry Zito herself right out of that relationship.
    They Tim Flanneryed themselves home.

    Etc.

  27. PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on October 5, 2010 at 7:14 pm

footnote on the Joe Nathan comment: maybe it’s been commented on, but there’s no doubt in my mind that one reason he was canned was because of his petulant and disrespectful display when Alou asked for the ball in the 2003 NLDS. Nathan was pitching lousy but his whole attitude was like: how could you? C’est moi! How dare you.

    Big baby.

He was dreadful, awful for the Twins when they needed him last year in the postseason.

  28. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 5, 2010 at 7:50 pm

“Zits still in the mix for the #4 start.”

Did you see and/or hear him when he said it this afternoon? It was nothing more than a courtesy to Zito because Bochy has yet to speak to him or any of the other guys of the final roster spots. Bochy kind of let the cat outta the bag this morning when he firmly said it would either be Bum or Timmy back on short rest.

Zito is not in the mix to start Game 4. As God is my witness Barry Zito will not start Game 4. That is the truest statement I’ve ever said in my life. And if by some chance he does, my statement will still be true. Because if Barry Zito starts Game 4 there is no God.

Our lineup still sucks Mario Bros. And for the love of Christ, NO Whitey.

  29. willied's avatar willied said, on October 5, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Dennis, I remember watching in horror as David Ross, the Braves back up C, homered off Sanchez in ATL. The same guy had K’d 6 times in 7 career ABs vs. JS, and this was his first HR of the year, in like July. No Panda behind the plate=Whitey stays.

  30. Michael's avatar Michael said, on October 5, 2010 at 8:29 pm

I talked to Vern, Dennis. Vera already spoke with ” The Boacher”. He promised her two things: Eli will be on the roster but he won’t play unless they’re up 3 touchdowns. She thanked him for both assurances..

      How’s Vera with that?

  31. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on October 5, 2010 at 8:39 pm

You know one of the things I love about Bochy?
He’s an above average major league baseball manager.
But if you saw him walking towards you on the street and he was wearing his grungiest civies..you’d avert your eyes..assuming he’d ask you for spare change.
If they win the WS, I’d love to see him do the Walter Huston dance.

  32. Michael's avatar Michael said, on October 5, 2010 at 8:40 pm

She’s especially grateful that he won’t play, Ted. The bridge club ladies are brutal when Eli fucks up.

  33. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 5, 2010 at 8:57 pm

Again, I didn’t hear anything from Bochy about Zito still being in the mix. I never heard him excluded, either.
Twin, when do we need to have our picks into you by? Game time Thurs? And it’s NLDS winner, Giants runs scored and total Giants HR’s for the series right? sorry, I must bounce……..

    Henry:
“Bochy said Zito still in the mix for Game 4, with Bumgarner and Lincecum. But he also said he’d be comfortable with no long man.
    10.05.2010 at 05:10 PM”
    Baggs:
“Bochy said Game 4 candidates are Zito, Bumgarner or Lincecum on three days (presumably if they face elimination). ” ( no time listed, it was about 5 also)

  36. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 5, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Eli is Whitey’s middle name. His first name is Dustin. Since 9/1, Dustin has had only 1 start and a grand total of 5 ABs. And we’re gonna keep this worthless POS on the roster just to appease Vera and her bridge club broads? I don’t think so.

    NO Dustin.

Actually, he is Ted. But that’s a problem for next year.

One of the things about this time of year is to look back on the shit that was talked off season….Seattle was boutique pick for AL West (and lost 101 games), Huff was a liability at 1B (OF not even discussed) and passed over by everyone, Torres barely made the team, Cain for Fielder/Sanchez for Corey Hart (et al) because we gotta have some offense…yadda yadda

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 5, 2010 at 10:20 pm

I remember listening to the first couple of ST games and Huff couldn’t even catch a routine throw from short, or a foul popup. Jon Miller was simply aghast at Huff’s defense. Then, the regular season started and–poof! You can’t say enough about his play in the field now. Not to mention what he’s done at the plate. It goes without saying how immeasurable he’s meant to us being in the post-season.

What do we have, 5 games to warm us up? I’m ready. Bea and Pilar will watch with me and one of the wheelchair Vets. The menus are planned, I’ll break out some of my cellared David Bruce Pinot Noir for the others, Martinelli for me. Had a boffo peach crop, some of the preserves will glaze the baby backs. My picks tomorrow are Yanks, Rays, Phils-but I’ll root for the Twins, Rangers, Reds..

  44. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 5, 2010 at 10:42 pm

I’m playing in the post-season bracket challenge over at MLB.com. You have to pick the winners in the exact number of games.

    Giants 3
    Phils 5
    Yanks 5
    Rays 4

Obviously rooting for the Reds for our benefit, but that’s gonna be a tall order. Maybe Doc Halladay will succumb to the pressure of pitching in his first post-season game. Right…
