Game 1, 6:37pm…….
Hmmmm…I’m kinda excited for the game tonight. Not really sure how I’m gonna burn the time off before first pitch—I have to go to work and, obviously, take care of my daughter’s basic needs, although by game time I’m not sure how high up we’re gonna go on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs pyramid:
maybe I’ll hit the gym, too…..
But other than all that, I don’t know how I’m going to be able to tolerate the seconds that are ticking off my life even as I type this. I’m sitting here with my dyed black head and my best Giants jersey hanging neatly pressed nearby and all I’m doing is waiting. Just waiting. Still waiting……..
I guess we can bide our time by marveling at the playoff roster at 10am. Then you guys get to fight it out for who can post the line up here first. That’s always fun. Beers will probably be getting popped open by many of you before the customary whistle blow at 5pm. And then we’re just about there, right?
Let’s just throw this out there: Our playoff history sucks. SF has never won a crown. We’ve ultimately lost every series we’ve played in– some were dramatic losses (the 2002 WS), others I barely remember (the 1997 series v Florida) and others were just plain weird (the ’89 Earthquake series). But in the end, they were all losses. But there have been amazing, wonderful playoff memories that I’ll never forget. My favorite playoff moment was the Will Clark grand slam bomb that he launched deep into the Chicago night sky. I was watching the game with some friends in my dorm room at Lewis and Clark and got so excited about that hit that I jumped out our 2nd story window, saved from major injury by one of Mother Nature’s trees. That’s the feeling i want to have to have tonight. And luckily, we live in a one level house so I’m good to go as far as that goes…….
In case you were counting, the Fucking Idiot (that be me) went 3-0 in yesterday’s playoff games.
I will give you my picks for today after this doc appt…
I don’t see odds yet for Yankees-Twins, but I am going to ride Texas still and must go Giants…
I think Texas is playing much better than their billing.
And I think it is damn well time for the Yankee’s ow3nag3 of the Twins to end.
Other than that (ownage) the twins are the team to take the Yanks out. I want to see a twins/rays ALCS (full stop)
Until my man Timmy shows for game one – all the rest of the contests are going to plan.
HowTheFuck do you predict a WS winner (from Tuesday) based on division (then) league winners? when playoff time is so un imaginably baseball at its best?
10% stats 10% whatever (on the day) 50% intangibles and 50% luck.
I know the stats, I know the intangibles, can’t do anything with luck so that gives me 10% edge with whatever, and this team has it.
Go Giants!
go Giants
were you giving out LOCKS, GH? I said Yanks 6-2 and it went 6-4 but they covered my -1.5 spread so I was AAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL good, baby!
I hear ya, Flav. Tick fucking tock.
All signs point to Zito being left off. The same argument for Zito being out applies to Guillen.
Guillen will be on the roster. Unfortunately. Thank God I am not retired and I have to go to work. otherwise I would be at home watching MLB network, ESPN, ESPN news, ESPN2, have the radio tuned to KNBR, and ESPN Radio. Yes it is a good thing I am at work.
Yankees run and a half favorite today. So I go Twins, Ranger and Giants.
Flav, I was a lock on all three yesterday!!! I feel good about all my series picks, but Twins in 5 will be the most tested.
I actually liked this four day break basically between the celebration on Sunday until tonight’s first pitch. After a nerve wracking weekend, month and tortuous year, it was good not to think about the first game.
I got to rest up, relax the nerves, hit the gym yesterday, we have our weekly basketball game during lunch tomorrow. Now we get national attention tonight and I hope everyone at ATT goes absolutely nuts tonight…
The mind and body have been cleansed, now on to kicking some Braves ass…
And yet, at work I can still spend all my time at the flap, espn, mlb, sfgate, baggs, yahoo sports…ha!
Lee Halladay and CC. That’s 3 pretty nice horses to ride, GH.
I’m pretty concerned about this series and tonight in particular. I fear Lowe will be tougher on the G’s than Lincecum will be on the Braves.
FWIW, Atl hitting .311 against Tim.
Yes, we’ve all lived through, or are aware of our past playoff history. All I have to say about that is, every 56 years like clockwork.
Eleven more wins is all it’ll take.
Book it.
Bozo, did ya hear? Derek Lowe has a no-hitter going. That’s right, Derek Lowe is pitching a no-hitter.
I can’t believe he’s given up NO hits yet. It’s never too early to jinx his sorry-ass.
Oh, I hope you are right. Oh do I ever. Hope. You. Are. Right.
Not to worry Dennis, Whitey will bust up that no NO Whitey (great line by the way).
Shout out to Twin for yesterdays Rondo Hatton reference. Very good, I see I’m not the only kid who watched House of Horrors on late night TV.
It’s not just the waiting. It’s the raging, hypercaffeinated, sizzling neurons during the game. (In 2002, my wife watched upstairs in the bedroom; I watched downstairs, pacing, cursing, pacing, mumbling, fidgeting, wiggling, staring, pacing, mumbling like Neal Cassady on the road or MacMurphy jousting w/ Nurse Ratched.) Yes, to be willing to take your leap of joy, your Kierkegaard leap of faith, Magnus, yes yes and yes, that abandon! (Seriously, I’m going to separately ask a few of you for phone numbers. Probably not respecting “boundaries,” but what can I do? I’ll need people to talk me down, or up. Already I’m getting worked up out of control.)
We did hand Roy H. his first loss this year, boys and girls.
And would you believe the day we beat him (4/26) the starting lineup included;
Renteria, DeRosa, Bowker, Shitholtz and NO Whitey.
And, Pawlie, would ya really believe that a certain someone went 2 for 3 with a double, homer, and 2 RBI?
NO Whitey.
Just 10 hrs. till first pitch. I wonder how many times till then will I bash our lineup and demand NO Whitey.
I’ll set the O/U at 36 1/2.
Our lineup sucks Chef’s salty chocolate balls and for the love of Jesus H. Christ, NO Whitey.
And now, pinch running for Posey. ELI WHITESIDE.
Just kidding Den.
SFGATE: Zito not on the roster, Bochy would only confirm A Rowand is on.
I’m so glad I missed the 2002 WS due to being in basic training. I watched game 6 on mlb network earlier this year and I about cried. A good thing about being in Hawaii is the time difference. So I’ll still be at work at 3:37 HST. But that sucks cuz I’m gonna miss first pitch. Either way Go Giants!! BTW it was nice to see Bengie do well yesterday.
As a typical Giants fan, we all expect soemthing to go terribly wrong…I am nervous about Lowe as well, but that is my inner Giant fan speaking…
Rowand on means no Guillen…. best news I’ve heard all morning….
The Chron reports that Zito will be having lunch with Hudson today. This is our town. Chances are the chef is a Giants fan. Hey Zits, you might not be on the roster, but here’s your chance to help the team. Use some of that $126M to pay off the chef to slip something in Huddy’s food. Now, that’s a good clubhouse guy.
Lincecum will be pitching on a cool evening at home. Everything’s cool as can be. Giants win 3-0.
Don’t get ahead of yourself Decap. It could mean that Rent is left off. I expect Guillen makes the roster, but I hope Ross starts over him.
The time is NOW. Not the past. Fuck 2003. And 2002. And 1997, and ’89, and ’87, and 71 (saw Perry’s win and Kigman’s gaffe).
Different team, different world.
Giants in 4, baby . . .
I’m going into this post season with an open mind. No expectations. You can’t win the WS if you don’t get into the POs, so the Giants have jumped that big hurdle. On paper, they’re not the best, nor the worst of the 8 in this. They have arguably the best pitching staff of all, so they clearly have a shot, with the spotty offense against elite pitching being the obvious downside. Whatever happens, this is sure better than the last 7 years on the outside looking in…
I also have to give a nod to Twin about his comments about Gardenhire and Maddon not being the managers everyone praises them to be..Gardenhire blows Game 1 letting Crain pitch to Teixeria with lefties in the bullpen…and Twin pointed out the weak lineup Tampa trotted out there yesterday. Why I like Texas again today…
Shit, Just perusing Dave the Rat’s stats, he played with 4 teams in 1977?
Met, Pads, Angels, and Yanks . . .
Crazy . . .
This is the day. This is the week. This is the Black and Orange month. This is the year. No more butterflies. Let’s rock em. Let’s Roll!
Wait a minute. Let’s get our priorities straight, here.
Twin made a reference to Rondo Hatton and I missed it!!
zum, this will at least interest you. There’s a new book out by an authou named Dan Epstein called “Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America In the Swinging “70s”
A study of how baseball emulated American culture during that period possibly more than any other. Not your usual baseball book. It’s foci is more on things like the acid induced no-no by Dock Ellis, stuff like that
foci???? Use of a word as such should get you banned from the Flap Ted!!!
I wonder whether Bochy will position his lineup with guys who have had some success against sinkerball pitchers, Lowe in particular. This looks like a situation where hacking could be costly. Giants get the early lead and Timmy’s the guy to hold it, particularly on a cool evening by the Bay.
Chuck you’re right, fuck the past! This is our time!
Guillen off the roster, per Schullman…
Rohand, Rent in. Runzler, Ray, Guillen, Zito off…
I’ll give it up to the Giants management. Took some stones to leave Zito off, but was the right and obvious thing to do if you’re interesting in winning. The ultimate admission that his contract is an abomination…

They made the right call dumping Guillen and Zito
Bochy alluded to Renteria being healthy and ready to go the other day.
Rent has to be penciled in as a backup SS and PH role. That’s OK, he takes good ABs. I can’t see him as starting. He hasn’t played in what, 3+ weeks….
Well, El Presidente makes the playoffs, no surprise. I’ll call the roster 24 players + a defensive insurance policy. With his spaghetti stick, the Giants are effectively a man down against the other squad in the versatility/pinch hitting department….
Ishi on and Zito off? God will be pleased.
Giants all the way baby!
Vern and Vera just arrived at SFO
Love the roster decisions all the way around. Now let’s just hope Guillen’s clubhouse cancer doesn’t show up.
Think Guillen will be hanging with the team?
Glad to see him (and Zito) off.
Zito acknowledged pitching himself off the rotation down the stretch, last Sat’s puerile effort, and the subsequent boo-fest.
Good for Boch. It’s nice to have the option to keep him off. Something I’ve ripped Bochy for in the past was sticking with guys past their time. However, he never had the options he does now.
MOY and ROY!
MOY maybe, but I doubt Boch will get the ROY too.
Guillen’s rep on his arrival from KC was of a guy who gets pissed when he has to sit on the bench. Maybe a couch will mollify him. I’m not sure I like Nate instead of Guillen PHing, however. But I see the logic in keeping the dunce available. At least he can get to the ball and actually have a chance to show off his arm. By the time Guillen tracks it down, . . . well, why speak ill of him now.
Chuck, I agree on the MOY and ROY. Not seeing mention of Bochy in the MOY discussion. Just more east coast bias BS I guess.
In the end, if its Rohand v. Guillen, the defensive angle must have won out. Guillen’s lack of O doomed him, since his D is a huge liability. At least Rohand can run down a line drive, and he might actually hit one hard once in a while, in between ground outs to third…
we have El Presidente, they are carrying Diory Hernandez. Pretty much a wash.
Good call. Hernandez actually has a worse OPS that Whitey, which I would have thought hard to do. Alright, let’s call is 24 v. 24 and one catcher v. one infileder insurance policies…
Just got back from parents night, apparently my step-lad is doing well. He’s only been to noe Giants game.
So the 25 man is set; as it should be.
Speaking of ‘ready to go’ (max)
it is time for Rays, Twins and Gigantes
But, but…. WSW said Guillen was a lock.. it figured to be Rowand OR Guillen, as I said”all along”…I’m mildly surprised they left Zits off, but he forced their hand. Even a decent outing Saturday and he’d be in. Other than concern about MadBum’s innings, I’m fine with the decisions.
glad to see him off, never wanted him here……but it was him, or Ishi…24/25 “predictions” there…
So, this 3 days of roster bullshit is finally over. Sabes and Boch probably had it set in ink after lunch on Monday and have been playing pinochle ever since. Let’s play ball ! ….
Shit, this day can’t move any fricking slower, can it?
What time is it??
What, no Ford? I’m outraged. I thought they would have a Darren on the roster just to keep JT busy and out of the booth.
Now, tonight’s LU. I lean to my med induced OF call of Burrell/Rowand/Torres.
So:
Torres RF
Fruckie 2B
Huff 1B
Buster C
Burrell LF
Uribe SS
Panda 3B
Rowand CF
Like it. Just wish Panda’s lefty stick was deserving of a higher slot…
I have so much shit to do at work, but I just can’t. I can’t I tell you! It’s not even noon yet! SHHHHHIIIIT!!!!!!!!
My boss doesn’t understand, I live in a non-baseball country. Maybe a transistor radio with earpiece? Ah, those were the days.
Leaving Guillen off was the correct move for all the reasons I’ve stated over the last few days. Since he’s such a nut, I’m assuming that severs our relationship with him, that’s totally fine. He wasn’t who we thought he was. Sabean nailed it square with a bunch of other guys this year, a GM isn’t going to ever have every move work out obviously…….
It was a low risk, high reward move. It didn’t pan out, but it was definitely worth a shot.
As I have said, and I nailed 92 wins, character is a factor and this team has it.
Woo Hoo
We also have the fans in the stands. AT&T, rally rags, and let’s go!
I think Rowand in center is the call to make now that they have sensibly left Guillen off. I did not think they would, but kudos to Boch and Sabean then. This is probably the best 25-man roster.
I think Guillen is hurt and that is what they told him is the reason he is sitting for now. I think with Renteria on the bench and Uribe there as well, he has some veteranss to keep his surliness on tamp down. Plus if he wants a shot at the NL Championship series roster, he better be the loudest player on the bench…
I have a feeling Rowand may have a couple of hits today and work his way into the staarting lineup for this series. I like Ross off the bench for a little more speed when needed outside of Nate and Fontenot…
Regardless of Rowand’s great numbers vs Lowe, I can’t foresee Bochy pushing the envelope that far and giving him the start over Ross tonight. Cody has good numbers vs Lowe himself (3 for 10 w/ a double and 3 Ws) so I’m expecting him to start in RF tonight.
And I’d bat Ross 8th. Timmy would have a better chance bunting him over to second than if it were my BFFF, Orson Welles standing at first.
And what’s left to say about Eli Whiteside making the 25-man post-season roster.
To paraphrase the late-great Lou Saban quote, “you’re killing me, Whitey, you’re killing me.”
is it 9:30/6:30 yet???? I am now getting fucking antsy…
I was antsy last night, my god! where is the instant gratification of one game after another with no breaks?
I am now on the ledge; cannot take the tension.
typical, ESPN UK is showing hockey. The NHL is doing 5 games in Europe just now they are in Sweden.
A few of us have posted that Guillen should be out, Flavor.
“Decision is Rowand or Guillen. I’d go with Aaron. I think they’ve seen enough of Guillen..” Only WSW was adamant that he’d be in. He made a decent case, but only for Guillen OR Rowand, not both.
I’m not the only 1 surprised…I wasn’t saying I wanted him there, only predicting what they would do..
“a bit surprising since the Giants seemed intent on starting him in right field throughout the stretch drive.” Henry’s blog
You guys clamoring for Rowand to start tonight, need I remind you…
Aug. (37 ABs) 135 .256 .216 .472
Sep. (21 ABs) .095. 095 .143 .238
58 ABs produced 1 RBI. And that came via the HR. Lay off the medication.
October: 1.000 BA 1 for 1 11 HR 2 RBI….
It might be Ross, but frankly I think Rowand is on the squad mainly to face Lowe tonight. We’ll see.
I don’t know if this has been discussed or cussed. But, I would like to nominate ‘The Soph’ for the coveted POTTY award (Prognosticator Of The Total Year). The Soph’s bold, or should I say “spot-on intuit” in predicting that the Giants wouldn’t win the Wild Card, at the start of the season, has proved correct. Bravo The Soph, bravo.
The Giants will not be available to present the award (this year, a stained hankie) but the better coached Padres and Rockies will be on hand.
Oops, that was meant for the Splash. Fuck it, would’ve probably gotten deleted over there.
I enjoyed it… and since I don’t go over there anymore thanks for sharing….
Bozo, you should still post it over there…
Dennis, I have a feeling on Rowand with his track record with Lowe…I went 3-0 in the playoffs, my predictions are hot!!!
Done. We’ll see if it lasts.
1 for 1 with 11 HRs? Row Row’s slugging % must be off the charts . . .
Shields throws away a pickoff throw to 1st, Runner from 3rd scores.
For Tejas . . .
A major problem with this blog is not being able to edit or delete one’s own post… anyway, good job, Chucklefuck. I’m sure everyone thought it was 11 until you caught it
Waaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m not going to bash Rohand for getting on the roster. He and Guillen are pretty much equally odiferous at the plate, so the tie goes to the gloveman — Rohand. If he starts tonite because of his good history v. Lowe, whatever, maybe he’ll get a hit. If he goes ofur then it’s his last start in the series, and he’s ridin’ pine waitin’ for a PH or late inning D appearance the rest of the way…
ok, the wait now officially sucks…if I diod nto have a frickin recpetion with a client, I would head home and go shoot some baskets to keep my mind of this…
Sorry to rub it in GH, but I’m on my second Sierra Nevada. Loving this retired southern gentleman (Ted?) thing.
with the beautiful Outer Banks..we will be in Duck in April…
No local broadcasts for us for the duration of the playoffs, right? Everything about TBS’s broadcast of the Twins / Yanks game last night was pure, unadulterated shit. From the broadcasters, to the horrible crowd noise to the suit that Craig Sager was wearing. Give me some FSN Bay Area, por favor.
yeah, I hate what these networks do with the sound. The Philly game, the annoucners were saying they could hardly hear, but you dont get that on the tv broadcast. Why are these producers so stupid. We want to hear that overwhelming crowd noices instead of these turd announcers…it makes the live game so much more exciting…
I want the old MNF coverage with Cossell, Meredit and Gifford with the corwd noise drowning them out..
interesting comment about the ‘national’ TBS announcing team.
If I hear the words superior, outstanding, best or greatest about every player playing…
the one exception was coverage of Josh Hamilton and his great CF defense after watching him dribble balls back in. Then I realised his rib injury is why his throws from center were so poor.
Anyway, give me a national announcer that just states the known facts and current info on the teams and the players – (this one is for Paulie) NO editorializing; and especially NO whitey.
I want somebody to capture the emotion of the game, biased or not. The announcers last night hardly uttered a word during the Texeira home run. The way they framed it sure made it seem like a ho-hum moment even though it was a HUGE momentum shift after the Twins had tied the game. No comment on how shocked and dismayed the Twins fans were. Nothing. It was downright terrible, in my book.
Swick, they have to be neutral or neutered, I am not sure which, I hate the annoucer that makes it sound like one team is so much more superior than another. I forget what announcer it is but he is such a jerk!! He thinks he know so much about everything baseball.
Groundout: 3B-1B (Weak 3B)
Single to 2B (Pop Fly to Short CF-RF); Molina to 3B
Groundout: 3B-1B (Weak 3B)
Intentional Walk
Groundout: SS-1B (Weak SS)
Single to CF (Ground Ball)
Groundout: 2B-1B
Groundout: SS-1B (Weak SS)
Those are Rowand’s last 8 PAs vs Lowe. I see a blooper that fell in to short right-center; an IW, God only knows why; a 33-hopper up the middle for a single to center and four groundouts, two both to 3B and SS all described as WEAK.
NO Rowand.
You’re gonna see some Rowand starting either tonight or when they face Hudson. Burrell’s career numbers vs. Hudson are not good.
That won’t change Burrell’s status, he starts EVERY game. If Rowand starts, Ross gets the boot.
Yeah, you’re probably right. Small sample size, but Ross has a .267 OPS vs. Hudson in 15 PAs. I could see Bochy going Burrell, Torres, Ross vs. Lowe and Burrell, Torres, Rowand vs. Hudson. Even though Rowand has good career numbers vs. Lowe.
Denny stopped at 8 even though there were 3 this year and 10 in 2008. He’s 6 for 12 with a walk in those appearances.
Kinsler goes deep…2-0
Bozo’s on his second Sierra Nevada? Unfair.
Let’s talk about something to get our minds off this wait for the game.
So, how’s about them Giants, huh?
test
Huh. I wonder what the psuedo dirty word was that blocked my post. Let’s try another test. Let’s see, I had the words tryst, crabs and wife/sister
Nope. None of those.
Love ya Ted; is it your turn to buy?
What about sister-wife?
Rangers bet looking pretty darn good right now…
Oh fuck. The Rays got HOSED on that 2-2 check swing appeal. Then Young goes yard for a 3-run job.
Game over. Series over. Season over.
NO Rowand.
We better not get fucked like that tonight. My nerves can’t handle the pressure.
It’s just a little past 1:00 and I’m already a total wreck. If Timmy goes ball 1 to the first batter I’ll probably call the game over.
NO Rowand. “You’re killing me, Whitey, you’re killing me.”
Make mine a red bull, gotta be flailing those rally flags tonight Giants Fans.
That’ll be fine. Diet or regular?
In my secret dreams I saw the Rangers as the surprise team of the post season. But damn, I love those rays.
Rangers are going all the way…you heard it here first…(of course, I reserve the right to change my prediction if the Giants advance to the WS)!!!
