A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Game 1, 6:37pm…….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 7, 2010

Hmmmm…I’m kinda excited for the game tonight. Not really sure how I’m gonna burn the time off before first pitch—I have to go to work and, obviously, take care of my daughter’s basic needs, although by game time I’m not sure how high up we’re gonna go on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs pyramid:

http://tinyurl.com/32l6mha

maybe I’ll hit the gym, too…..

But other than all that, I don’t know how I’m going to be able to tolerate the seconds that are ticking off my life even as I type this. I’m sitting here with my dyed black head and my best Giants jersey hanging neatly pressed nearby and all I’m doing is waiting. Just waiting. Still waiting……..

I guess we can bide our time by marveling at the playoff roster at 10am. Then you guys get to fight it out for who can post the line up here first. That’s always fun. Beers will probably be getting popped open by many of you before the customary whistle blow at 5pm. And then we’re just about there, right?

Let’s just throw this out there: Our playoff history sucks. SF has never won a crown. We’ve ultimately lost every series we’ve played in– some were dramatic losses (the 2002 WS), others I barely remember (the 1997 series v Florida) and others were just plain weird (the ’89 Earthquake series). But in the end, they were all losses. But there have been amazing, wonderful playoff memories that I’ll never forget. My favorite playoff moment was the Will Clark grand slam bomb that he launched deep into the Chicago night sky. I was watching the game with some friends in my dorm room at Lewis and Clark and got so excited about that hit that I jumped out our 2nd story window, saved from major injury by one of Mother Nature’s trees. That’s the feeling i want to have to have tonight. And luckily, we live in a one level house so I’m good to go as far as that goes…….

I don’t see odds yet for Yankees-Twins, but I am going to ride Texas still and must go Giants…

I think Texas is playing much better than their billing.
And I think it is damn well time for the Yankee’s ow3nag3 of the Twins to end.
Other than that (ownage) the twins are the team to take the Yanks out. I want to see a twins/rays ALCS (full stop)

Until my man Timmy shows for game one – all the rest of the contests are going to plan.

HowTheFuck do you predict a WS winner (from Tuesday) based on division (then) league winners? when playoff time is so un imaginably baseball at its best?
10% stats 10% whatever (on the day) 50% intangibles and 50% luck.
I know the stats, I know the intangibles, can’t do anything with luck so that gives me 10% edge with whatever, and this team has it.
      Go Giants!
      go Giants

were you giving out LOCKS, GH? I said Yanks 6-2 and it went 6-4 but they covered my -1.5 spread so I was AAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL good, baby!

I hear ya, Flav. Tick fucking tock.

All signs point to Zito being left off. The same argument for Zito being out applies to Guillen.

Guillen will be on the roster. Unfortunately. Thank God I am not retired and I have to go to work. otherwise I would be at home watching MLB network, ESPN, ESPN news, ESPN2, have the radio tuned to KNBR, and ESPN Radio. Yes it is a good thing I am at work.

Yankees run and a half favorite today. So I go Twins, Ranger and Giants.

Flav, I was a lock on all three yesterday!!! I feel good about all my series picks, but Twins in 5 will be the most tested.

I actually liked this four day break basically between the celebration on Sunday until tonight’s first pitch. After a nerve wracking weekend, month and tortuous year, it was good not to think about the first game.

I got to rest up, relax the nerves, hit the gym yesterday, we have our weekly basketball game during lunch tomorrow. Now we get national attention tonight and I hope everyone at ATT goes absolutely nuts tonight…

The mind and body have been cleansed, now on to kicking some Braves ass…

And yet, at work I can still spend all my time at the flap, espn, mlb, sfgate, baggs, yahoo sports…ha!

Lee Halladay and CC. That’s 3 pretty nice horses to ride, GH.

I’m pretty concerned about this series and tonight in particular. I fear Lowe will be tougher on the G’s than Lincecum will be on the Braves.
FWIW, Atl hitting .311 against Tim.

It’s not just the waiting. It’s the raging, hypercaffeinated, sizzling neurons during the game. (In 2002, my wife watched upstairs in the bedroom; I watched downstairs, pacing, cursing, pacing, mumbling, fidgeting, wiggling, staring, pacing, mumbling like Neal Cassady on the road or MacMurphy jousting w/ Nurse Ratched.) Yes, to be willing to take your leap of joy, your Kierkegaard leap of faith, Magnus, yes yes and yes, that abandon! (Seriously, I’m going to separately ask a few of you for phone numbers. Hey Zits, you might not be on the roster, but here’s your chance to help the team. Use some of that $126M to pay off the chef to slip something in Huddy’s food. Now, that’s a good clubhouse guy.

I’m going into this post season with an open mind. No expectations. You can’t win the WS if you don’t get into the POs, so the Giants have jumped that big hurdle. On paper, they’re not the best, nor the worst of the 8 in this. They have arguably the best pitching staff of all, so they clearly have a shot, with the spotty offense against elite pitching being the obvious downside. Whatever happens, this is sure better than the last 7 years on the outside looking in…

Glad to see him (and Zito) off.

Zito acknowledged pitching himself off the rotation down the stretch, last Sat’s puerile effort, and the subsequent boo-fest.

Good for Boch. It’s nice to have the option to keep him off. Something I’ve ripped Bochy for in the past was sticking with guys past their time. However, he never had the options he does now.

Guillen’s rep on his arrival from KC was of a guy who gets pissed when he has to sit on the bench. Maybe a couch will mollify him. I’m not sure I like Nate instead of Guillen PHing, however. But I see the logic in keeping the dunce available. At least he can get to the ball and actually have a chance to show off his arm. By the time Guillen tracks it down, . . . well, why speak ill of him now.

In the end, if its Rohand v. Guillen, the defensive angle must have won out. Guillen’s lack of O doomed him, since his D is a huge liability. At least Rohand can run down a line drive, and he might actually hit one hard once in a while, in between ground outs to third…

I think Rowand in center is the call to make now that they have sensibly left Guillen off. I did not think they would, but kudos to Boch and Sabean then. This is probably the best 25-man roster.

I think Guillen is hurt and that is what they told him is the reason he is sitting for now. I think with Renteria on the bench and Uribe there as well, he has some veteranss to keep his surliness on tamp down. Plus if he wants a shot at the NL Championship series roster, he better be the loudest player on the bench…

I have a feeling Rowand may have a couple of hits today and work his way into the staarting lineup for this series. I like Ross off the bench for a little more speed when needed outside of Nate and Fontenot…

  50. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 7, 2010 at 11:44 am

Regardless of Rowand’s great numbers vs Lowe, I can’t foresee Bochy pushing the envelope that far and giving him the start over Ross tonight. Cody has good numbers vs Lowe himself (3 for 10 w/ a double and 3 Ws) so I’m expecting him to start in RF tonight.

And I’d bat Ross 8th. Timmy would have a better chance bunting him over to second than if it were my BFFF, Orson Welles standing at first.

And what’s left to say about Eli Whiteside making the 25-man post-season roster.
To paraphrase the late-great Lou Saban quote, “you’re killing me, Whitey, you’re killing me.”

It might be Ross, but frankly I think Rowand is on the squad mainly to face Lowe tonight. We’ll see.

I don’t know if this has been discussed or cussed. But, I would like to nominate ‘The Soph’ for the coveted POTTY award (Prognosticator Of The Total Year). The Soph’s bold, or should I say “spot-on intuit” in predicting that the Giants wouldn’t win the Wild Card, at the start of the season, has proved correct. Bravo The Soph, bravo.
The Giants will not be available to present the award (this year, a stained hankie) but the better coached Padres and Rockies will be on hand.

Dennis, I have a feeling on Rowand with his track record with Lowe…I went 3-0 in the playoffs, my predictions are hot!!!

I’m not going to bash Rohand for getting on the roster. He and Guillen are pretty much equally odiferous at the plate, so the tie goes to the gloveman — Rohand. If he starts tonite because of his good history v. Lowe, whatever, maybe he’ll get a hit. If he goes ofur then it’s his last start in the series, and he’s ridin’ pine waitin’ for a PH or late inning D appearance the rest of the way…

  63. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on October 7, 2010 at 12:29 pm

ok, the wait now officially sucks…if I diod nto have a frickin recpetion with a client, I would head home and go shoot some baskets to keep my mind of this…

No local broadcasts for us for the duration of the playoffs, right? Everything about TBS’s broadcast of the Twins / Yanks game last night was pure, unadulterated shit. From the broadcasters, to the horrible crowd noise to the suit that Craig Sager was wearing. Give me some FSN Bay Area, por favor.

    • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on October 7, 2010 at 1:05 pm

yeah, I hate what these networks do with the sound. The Philly game, the annoucners were saying they could hardly hear, but you dont get that on the tv broadcast. Why are these producers so stupid. We want to hear that overwhelming crowd noices instead of these turd announcers…it makes the live game so much more exciting…

I want the old MNF coverage with Cossell, Meredit and Gifford with the corwd noise drowning them out..

    • eddacker415's avatar eddacker415 said, on October 7, 2010 at 1:06 pm

interesting comment about the ‘national’ TBS announcing team.
If I hear the words superior, outstanding, best or greatest about every player playing…
the one exception was coverage of Josh Hamilton and his great CF defense after watching him dribble balls back in. Then I realised his rib injury is why his throws from center were so poor.
Anyway, give me a national announcer that just states the known facts and current info on the teams and the players – (this one is for Paulie) NO editorializing; and especially NO whitey.

      • swickman's avatar swickman said, on October 7, 2010 at 1:16 pm

I want somebody to capture the emotion of the game, biased or not. The announcers last night hardly uttered a word during the Texeira home run. The way they framed it sure made it seem like a ho-hum moment even though it was a HUGE momentum shift after the Twins had tied the game. No comment on how shocked and dismayed the Twins fans were. Nothing. It was downright terrible, in my book.

      • Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on October 7, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Swick, they have to be neutral or neutered, I am not sure which, I hate the annoucer that makes it sound like one team is so much more superior than another. I forget what announcer it is but he is such a jerk!! He thinks he know so much about everything baseball.

    Groundout: 3B-1B (Weak 3B)
Single to 2B (Pop Fly to Short CF-RF); Molina to 3B
    Groundout: 3B-1B (Weak 3B)
    Intentional Walk
    Groundout: SS-1B (Weak SS)
    Single to CF (Ground Ball)
    Groundout: 2B-1B
    Groundout: SS-1B (Weak SS)

Those are Rowand’s last 8 PAs vs Lowe. I see a blooper that fell in to short right-center; an IW, God only knows why; a 33-hopper up the middle for a single to center and four groundouts, two both to 3B and SS all described as WEAK.

    NO Rowand.

    • swickman's avatar swickman said, on October 7, 2010 at 12:38 pm

You’re gonna see some Rowand starting either tonight or when they face Hudson. Burrell’s career numbers vs. Hudson are not good.

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 7, 2010 at 12:47 pm

That won’t change Burrell’s status, he starts EVERY game. If Rowand starts, Ross gets the boot.

      • swickman's avatar swickman said, on October 7, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Yeah, you’re probably right. Small sample size, but Ross has a .267 OPS vs. Hudson in 15 PAs. I could see Bochy going Burrell, Torres, Ross vs. Lowe and Burrell, Torres, Rowand vs. Hudson. Even though Rowand has good career numbers vs. Lowe.

    • Michael's avatar Michael said, on October 7, 2010 at 12:51 pm

Denny stopped at 8 even though there were 3 this year and 10 in 2008. He’s 6 for 12 with a walk in those appearances.
