A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Kuip’s Forecast…

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 8, 2010

As I do every morning, I was listening to KNBR on the way into work the other day. Murph and Idiot were talking to Kuip (I swear to God I don’t know how Kruk and Kuip make it through an interview with those 2) and they were reeling off all of Lowe’s numbers against the Giants, in September, at ATT etc….Anyway, Kuip ends the discussion by saying “and you know how you deal with all of that? You beat ’em 1-0.” That cue’d the requisite guffaw from the 2 stooges and verbal backslaps ensued all the way around. But he nailed it, didn’t he? Not too much to say about last night. Timmy was…. no words, you guys all saw it…..

for all the nerves we went through during the day yesterday…the three martinis and couple bourbons and ginger before the game calmed me down (thanks Bozo), what a magnificent performance. Nuff said!

GH – bourbon and ginger is a favorite summer drink for me. Last night I switched from beers to Meyers and OJ. It was as close as I could get to a black and orange drink. A tasty beverage I might add.

I am shocked the Twins have folded at home in both games..pathetic…

I bet when the Braves hitters saw Tim put on his jacket in the bottom of the 8th they thought oh good a different pitcher for the 9th. You could probably hear them groan when he trotted out to the mound in the 9th!!

Other than McCann, Braves had nothing last night. Listening to Kruk on the way home from work he said no wind last night in the park= good night for balls to carry. It’s supposed to warm up a bit today (sun’s already out south bay as I type this) see how this plays out.

Hey Loo, NYC was fun last week, despite the rain Monday and Thurs. Hit the turista spots, such as a drink at The View and Times SQ, dinner at Carnegie Deli, and next night at Carmine’s (all paid for by vendors)…ferry to the statue and Ellis Isle, subway to WTC. How do people stand subway heat in summer? How do people work there? Amazingly enough, 20 minutes back to Jersey City from the hotspots at night, but an hour to get there 5:30 ish. Trip to see all the street corner stands open so late to catch Theatre biz.

It’s a little ironic that the last strike (looking) to Lee was right down Van Ness Ave.

I am with Dennis on that juan, brilliant pitching game, so much character from the freak, how can that not inspire the entire team? I hope cal ripkin wasn’t too bored with our ace. He argued during the ESPN pre-game that fans want to see hitting.
Game started after 2am so not conducive to beer and bbq, but I had no trouble staying awake and clapping loudly at the proper moments. And that crowd – got to be some of the bestest in BB.

A magnificent postseason debut as Giants eke out the High vs. Lowe duel. For 3+ years we’ve been dying to see how The Freak would handle the playoffs, and we sure found out last night, as did the Braves. That was just as impressive as Halladay since Timmy didn’t have the benefit of a 4-run cushion, although the Reds lineup is probably a bit more formidable than Atlanta’s. Damn good game from Lowe, too, and lucky to get that one run, but we’ll take it.

What fun it is to be a Giants fan this year. Anything’s possible.

We’re still buzzing here at work over last night’s game! My favorite moment was somewhere around the middle to late innings when Timmy threw a 3-2 pitch to Lee that bounced about 25 feet in front of home plate. Lee still swung at it for strike three. Clearly, the Braves hitters were a little impatient but the movement on TL’s pitches made them look foolish swinging at junk. It was just a masterful performance.

10 more wins to go. Both Posey and Lincecum were composed like this was any old regular season game. I loved it.

I was amused by the “Posey’s better” chant at first. But there’s no knocking Heyward’s season and there’s no way that Posey appreciated it. Upon further review, I felt like it was lacking in class. However, if I were four beers in at the game, I can’t say I wouldn’t have participated…

The Freak is the toast of the baseball commentariat today. Tim Brown of Yahoo has a long feature on the pitch which turned Timmy’s season around, a new grip on his slider, which comes outta the glove, elbows, hair and hand the same way as a fastball and which has transformed his stuff from wicked to downright devastating. Chances are those two doubles were results of swing and hope.

The Lincecum-Posey combination is fixing to be one of the best battery pairings in baseball history. Both those guys are still well on the sunny side of thirty. Toss in Cain, Sanchez and Wilson and the Giants have the foundation for dominance for years to come. Add Torres and the possibility of Pablo rediscovering his inner bamboo shoots to transmogrify into the Panda once again and essentially a quarter of the team could represent a solid core for a decade of dominance. One more ingredient would be Brandon Belt, a five-tool athlete who tore up the minors this year. Belt’s speed, power and pitch selectivity and San Francisco could become an indomitable institution.

Right before our eyes this team has become something special. Add a slick-fielding, speedy shortstop for next season and the torture aspect may become little more than a hallowed memory.

It’s an Orange and Black October. Go Halloween Machine!

I have been having the same thoughts, stix. I have tried to avoid thinking past 2010, but it’s tough not to. Looking at the Giants’ FA list, all of the worthwhile FAs could be easily retained. I can’t help but think they’re poised for long-term dominance of the NL West.

Back to Cox: he was right about those numbers against Lowe. One of the reporters called him on walking Panda. The guy said Ross was 3 for 10, Bobby said weell, Panda was 4 for 10. Reporter corrected him “1 for 5”. Bobby looked embarrassed, said he thought it was 4 for 10 and dropped it.So Cox looks like a bumbling old fool…
Bobby was right. Panda was 4 for 10..

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on October 8, 2010 at 12:31 pm

That was a pretty funny comment from Cox, about why he didn’t come out and protest the call. He said- “You can’t see anything from the dugout.” Like all other managers, he just watches his players’ reactions, and none of his players reacted to the call. I think he earned a lot of respect from a lot of folks for his graciousness about it after the game. Although, I do think when another close call goes against the Braves in this series, he’s going to come out really fired up, in order to make up for not coming out last night.

  35. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 8, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Cox is still with it, no question. The dude has been a top manager for a quarter century, for good reason. He knows what he’s doing. The Panda walk was a faux pas, but he had a somewhat reasonable explanation for doing it. It’s not like he’s out in the ozone. If the 3rd baseman piks the Ross grounder, like he should have, the intentional walk is a non-issue, and who knows, maybe the game outcome is different…

I fully subscribe to the idea of lengthening the division playoffs to 7 games. 5 games is just too short. It disrepects the marathon win that the two teams just accomplished in a long season. Look at both ALDS. Unless there is a minor miracle, the Twins and Rays are going down. With 7 games, being down 0-2 would be tough to rebound from, but would not be a practical death sentence. If just frosts me that after scratching and clawing to win a division or WC after 162 games, basically after just 2 more, where you happened to screw up or got jobbed in one of the two by an umpire, you’re done…

Loved that sign in the stands last night pretty clever:

“The Land of the Freak and Not the Home of the Braves”.

I loved the chant when Heyward was up:

    “Posey’s better! Posey’s better!”

Bingo, Ted. The John Boehner of his day . . .

Didn’t really feel like re-investing last nights windfall (under bet) on tonight’s game. I made a couple fun bets- player to hit first hr: burrell 15-1. (last night I also nailed “no hr hit” at 2.5-1. I also bet varying amounts on how many the giants will win by exactly tonight: 2-6 runs. No clue what happens tonight but I’m Rolling with the IPA’s (ballast point to be specific) and can’t wait for some orange Friday action

Reading your betting posts is, to me, like reading twin’s computer posts.

Giants roll tonight. They get to Hanson early and often. Cain cruises to a 6-2 victory.

    Giants aren’t wearing orange tonight . . .

Lost in the lights during the PS always recalls Candy Madonado, I guess, but still I was able to pay attention to Chapman’s response. Didn’t he look like a guy wondering if the wrong team had won the auction for him?

Are you serious? I don’t think there’s any fuckin’ way they delay the game. Maybe it starts on another one of their stations, like TNT?
