A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Black Beards VS Phuckin Fillies…….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 12, 2010

Is anyone else trippin’ out on Cody Ross? He’s probably trippin’ harder than any of us. This was “the bat flip” guy– the guy who was treading water in an utterly forgettable season in Florida. Now he’s getting interviewed by the National media and beaming with pride about “our pitching staff” and spraying champagne all over Tim Lincecum. Seriously, this guy has to be thinking he’s in a dream right now. We’ve seen Jose Guillen take his last at bat as a Giant……

How badly does Jayson Werth wish he was a Giant? He’d go to TOWN dying up that bad boy……

Stat of the year: Our starting pitchers went 29 innings and gave up 3 earned runs…..

Along with the rest of you, I’m bummed we have to bottle all this up until Saturday but it’s probably best for our team– rest for Buster, our young arms and our old legs is just what we need night now…….

Anyone know what the weather is usually like in Philly in the middle of Autumn?

Finally, a HUGE congrats to KEVIN who won Twinfan’s computer-give-away contest. How many computers have you given away twin, 5? We don’t say it enough, but it really is an unbelievably good-vibe thing for the blog and the team to have you offering up these great prizes throughout the year. And you guys should know that he came to me with the idea of contests, I never asked him to do it.  He spends his time and money building these systems and gets nothing from me for doing it. There’s a word beyond generous for that, I just can’t think of it right now 🙂

It took 17 years, but we finally get the NLCS matchup we were denied back in ’93. And how fitting that the Giants get their long-awaited series with Philly by beating the Braves. What goes around, comes around.

MadBum, Ross, Casilla, Loogi Lopez, and Ishi effortlessly snaring the final out. What a cast of characters. This really is one to savor.

Flav, except for the possibility of rain, mid-October is a great time of year here in the East. While it does get chilly at night, the playing conditions should be just right.

As Zumie said on the last thread, good post-game coverage by MLB Network, especially in comparison to ESPN, which squeezed in a few highlights in between its latest FavreFest.

Cody Ross is a solid player.Always liked him with Florida.2 game winning hits, series MVP IMO.Got the huge 1st hit /HR to break up Lowe’s no hitter which also tied the game was the key moment in a lifeless offense to that point.

  16. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on October 12, 2010 at 10:15 am

Ah, the football team. Now that team should provide some topics for discussion between now and NLCS roster day. Is Alex Smith mentally ill? Did he completely forget who he is and what he was doing for a critical minute or two during Sunday night’s game? Did Mike Singletary once say, publicly, that coaching in the NFL is “easy” because he was born to do it? Can he get born again? And this Jed York guy, doesn’t he have the phone number of the PR firm his parents hired to handle the media when they decided to install him in the first place? He needs some, well, advice on how not to make predictions like an asswipe. They’re all in disarray. htf did it get to this point?

    • Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on October 12, 2010 at 10:22 am

htf did it get to this point?, Think Eddie and his damn ambition to get into the Gambling business. Hell Eddie what the hell were you thinking. He should have gone to Vegas!!

  17. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on October 12, 2010 at 10:36 am

Xoot, the prediction was made by Jed to usher Singletary out the door when the season ends. No other reason.

It was an easy call. I’m sure Jed was set to fire him if the season went south (hello 2007) at the start of the season. He was slow on the Nolan trigger. He won’t make that mistake 2x.

The greater question is, was, and will be, will Jed get a real GM?

If not, say hello to another untested HC. The pattern the Niners seems to be following is to fire guys at times when there are no candidates available (Scotty 5 weeks before the draft, Nolan midseason), which makes it appear that they HAVE to hire internally. There were no GMs available for hire 5 weeks before the draft. There were no HCs to hire during the season, and the Niners locked up Singletary early. At the time it looked like a smart move. However, Singletary is falling into the same traps Nolan did.

No HC in his right mind will come into a situation where there’s no GM and no real structure, lines of communication, or experienced football people, in the front office.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on October 12, 2010 at 11:17 am

No, no. I’m fascinated by the spectacle. I don’t think Jed needs to lay any foundation for sending Singletary down the skids at the end of the season, but who knows. I’m also really puzzled by the way the team plays. Both home games they looked like they could hold their own against anybody, and then both games they just blew it. (They CANNOT lose this coming weekend. That CANNOT happen . . . .)

YOWWWWZA. We are in this thing and its looking good. One suggestion to the Giants Brass: Move Ross up a place or two in the L.U. We all know by now that Uribe is a from the heels hacker ~ who connects decisively every now and again. We also know by now that CODE- E is a far more selective hitter with occasional power who is far more likely to get a key hit. So my take would be Uribe as the Scorpion, the stinger at the tail, with Ross as the guy who amps the rally and keeps it going.

My take on the NLCS is that the Giants eke out a split in those first two games in the crackerbox of the Beast from the East. Then SF dominates at McCovey Cove. Sanchez sets em on their ass in game three and then it’s MadBum vs. whom? Phils have three dominant or at least near-dominant starters who match up fairly closely with Timmy, Matt the Horse and the Drrrrty loogie. After those three the dropoff is sharp, sudden and deep. So going back east i see the Giants with a 3-2 lead in games.

Beast from the East has the advantage in hitting for average and in team speed. Power numbers are close. Unless Citizens Bandbox dimensions and winds favors LH hitters more than RH or vice versa, there is every bit as much a chance of a Giant hitting one out than a Philly. That team also has fewer hackers and draws more walks, so their power advantage would come with more baserunners likely. But then those Giants pitchers, earlier in the season giving out more free passes than a drunken P.T. Barnum in his heyday, have done gone and gotten stingy with their freebies lately.

Another advantage for Philly is team speed. Rollins may be a bit off his game, but Victorino is dangerous any time. Torres may roughly match him, but after him…

Biggest Giants advantages are that they have FOUR as against three Aces and they have more than a pair of reliables in their bullpen. Casilla was something else again last night and so was Lopez. Ramirez gave up that one HR in his SECOND IP vs Atlanta but otherwise has been nails. Romo is now a question mark for the 8th but ran out a fine string late in the regular season. And Sarah Bernhardt with the Blackbeard attitude is well and away the drama queen of all closers ~ when he’s not on. Dude’s on and its as easy as one-two-three.

    Giants in six.

Some thoughts for the in between time coming up:
    1. I know now why Torres rarely bunts for a hit. As shown last night, he stinks at bunting. Too bad, since again he’s struggling big time at the plate.
    2. The only LU change I would consider would be to get a speed guy on the bench for PR purposes. Lack of speed on the bases in late innings of the close games really hurts the Gyros. Rohand K’d last night (Fontenot isn’t a better AB, WTF is that?), his only appearance in the series, so having him off would be no loss. Why not Velez instead, and have him available for PRing, since these games are always so close.
    3. No mo Romo in the 8th, no how, or anytime with only a one run lead. It’s Casilla.
    4. Go Timmy, Dirrty, Cain, Bum. Not just for the L-R thing, but Cain throwing in the Philly bandbox is not a good idea.
    5. Normally, this big 5 day layoff I would call a joke. But, the Gyros need a blow. Maybe it will help revive the bats a bit, and cool off the Phills…
    6. Bonehead regularly pulls Burrell after two ABs for D if the Giants are up by one run, which I think is too early. But, he doesn’t PR for him last night in the 7th when Burrell reps the insurance run?

  23. Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on October 12, 2010 at 11:34 am

Watching the replay of Burrell sliding into home, does anyone think he would have been safe had he slid around the catcher and used his hand to touch home plate. tough call but it looks like maybe!!

He could have just run over McCann, he’s big enough. Then again, maybe he gets hurt, and then where are we? Pat shouldn’t have been running, Schierholz is dusting himself off at home plate when that throw comes in…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 12, 2010 at 11:57 am

Yeah, Loo, I get the tie thing, I’d still PR. Run score opps for this team are so precious, at that point in the game I go with the extra run chance. That’s why I’d push for a guy like Velez in the LU now for an extra pair of fast legs. The total lack of team speed hurts more against a team like the Phills that is way more dangerous at run scoring than the Braves…

Did the team fly back to SF? I was wondering if they just went straight to Philly…we get two night games this weekend? Will be great they make us the featured night game on Saturday and Yankees the afternoon game…

The Phillies fans are talking a lot of trash already…they think they are going to sweep us because the Braves sucked. Did they notice how the Reds did absolutely nothing for three games?

We just need to steal one of the first two and then take it to them at home!

I dont think Velez is eligible for the post-season. As I have said about Darren Ford as well. I believe Velez was not on the 60-day DL and was called up Sept. 7. Hence, neiter Velez, Ford or Burriss are eligible.

“To be eligible for a team’s playoff roster a player must be on any of the following: (a) the 25 man active roster, (b) the disabled list, (c) the bereavement list, or (d) the suspended list as of August 31st at midnight. The only exception is that a player on the 60-day disabled list may be replaced by another player from the team’s 40-man roster (as of August 31) who plays the same position (i.e. position player for position player, or pitcher for pitcher), with the approval of the commissioner of baseball.”

Thanks to everyone for listening, or pretending to. Congrats to all Giants fans. And a huge hat tip to those who always believed, or pretended to!

Now … Giant Head, you make the point: The playoffs aren’t about determining the “best team.” They’re about crowning a champion. Two totally different things, and fans only care about champions. In most cases, they don’t have the slightest concern about how “legitimate” the champion is (note the farcical March tournament held by minor-league basketball), and certainly most Giants fans don’t care if this team is the best or not. The Giants CAN win, and we’re all damn sure ready for it. Win 8 games … any way you can … take em, steal em, accept em as gifts.

The Phillies are not a better team than the Giants on paper. The season run differentials make it pretty much an even match. The fact that Posey and Burrell joined the team mid-season makes that case even stronger. The OPSs for the respective starting line ups are a wash.

Torres doesn’t need to bunt. He needs to learn how to take a walk again.

There was an earthquake wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry offshore blasts that come out of the San Joaquin Valley and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands’ necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a sudden apology on a baseball blog.

Phillies fans are out in full force on the Splash already. It’s gonna get ugly over there. You can feel this series will have a much different tone from the last one. Charlie Manuel deserves a karmic bitch-slap from the Giants. I can’t WAIT to see Lincecum/Halladay. First pitcher to blink loses.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on October 12, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Yeah, the Braves had a lot of dignity. Started with that “beautiful” Posey safe slide in game 1 they shrugged off as part of the game. I expect a lot of arrogance from the Phils. In the long run, the Philly white rally towels may turn out to be as annoying as the Atl floppy hatchets, too.

  54. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 12, 2010 at 4:38 pm

The phillies had a good year but they’ll never be mistaken for a dominant team. Their fans are all a bunch of pissed off drunkards who think it’s their job to torment a player with whatever means they choose to use. And they’re full of hubris although in this case it’s false hubris. That team is totally bearable..

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on October 12, 2010 at 4:51 pm

      No, you’re right. It’s hubris

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on October 12, 2010 at 5:02 pm

    • swickman's avatar swickman said, on October 12, 2010 at 5:06 pm

It’s legit hubris, but they seem to have the opinion that this will be an easy sweep of the Giants. I don’t think they’re prepared for the fact that Giants starting pitching is every bit as impressive as theirs is. They could be in for a rude awakening. Take the first game and Phillies fans will immediately start freaking out.

I was at Citizens Bank three years ago and saw a Giants game. Nice park. The Philly fans were actually pretty damn nice to me, I was wearing a Giants cap. I struck up a pretty good conversation with a fan next to me, and we talked ball all night. Of course, the Phills gave SF a severe beat down, including a grand slam by somebody, I forget who. Maybe they took pity on me…

Bengie does look 2 or 3 pounds lighter (in the chest). Maybe that’s what tipped the scales in his favor (for the steal)….
‘kat: Elvis is am established player he’s not some random add on for the playoffs. As I said, if ford ever makes it up here to play and shows he can get on base enough, you’ll see him do similar shit. But as it stands, there’s no way in hell u compare Elvis to ford and somehow diss bochy on this

I hate when a bad idea is awarded. The stoopid Gomez, Cruz, tries to steal third with 2-outs (should have been there already, but lollygagged it) and gets rewarded when Shoppach airmails the throw into LF.

Shoppach, now there’s a shitty guy. He’d give NO Whitey a good run for the money.
