What’s The Roster Going to Look Like vs The Fillies?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 13, 2010

We all know Bochy doesn’t like change, especially if things are going good–they don’t get much *gooder* than storming into the NLCS for the first time in 8 years. I HAVE to believe that Guillen burned his ticket to Philly when he declined to come support the team in person against Atlanta–plus, Ross is simply a better hitter than he is right now. Better defender. Better teammate. It would be inconceivable to me that we see Guillen on the roster….

Zito? For who? For what? Bochy can’t want to endure a start from Zito on the road against a solid hitting team in a smallish ballpark. So, unless they are seeing signs that Bumgarner is wearing down, I can’t see Zits making the roster (but props to him for staying focused on his regular schedule and staying with the team for the Atlanta series)…..

The problem against Atlanta was a lack of speed off the bench late in the game. Ishikawa ran the bases brilliantly when he scored on Sun but if Bochy had Velez on the bench he would have pinch run for him. I could definitely see Rowand missing the cut and Velez replacing him for his speed alone…….

Outside of the roster decisions, this is looking like a slow week. Saturday seems a long way away right now……

Would be hard to convince anyone that Rowand is hurt especially the Commissioner, so replacing him with Velez is a near impossibility.

Bochy sticks with the same thing (I am sure he eats bacon and eggs every day) and I expect the roster will look exactly the same as the Braves series. Didn’t Bochy also say Bum is his guy? The only possibility of Zito over Mota, but I see no upside to that change.

maybe I need someone to post the rules of who can be on this NLCS roster. I thought as long as they were on the 40 man you could add and subtract before each series. But I’m totally fine being wrong with that, just let me know…..
I love O/U lines. I like betting “the pace of the game” plus it allows me to bet on more giants games since I often think they’re going to lose but could never bet against them. Sat’s o/u line is 6. SIX. Based on the action, most are betting the under right now. And could totally see Tim/Doc going toe to toe for the entire game. But for some strange reason I am leaning towards the over. Maybe I’m just hoping to finally see this offense show up, something they do at random times throughout the year. Could Sat be the day when it looks like they barely have a chance for a hit much less a run vs Halladay?

Were always gonna have lack of speed with this team on the bench are off. It’s just the way it is with this team.No way Pathetic Rowand won’t make the team though.,not against his former team.Roster will probably remain the same.Maybe add Runzler instead of Mota, for more dominate LHP match ups against Phillies dominate LH LU.

You’re right, Flav. Ishikawa even made a joke about not being pinch runned for…pinch runned for? Is that an actual term?
Saturday does seem like a month away. But we can count on you to come up with a daily subject to keep the banter flowing and the assholiness going.

Are the Giants really going to ride Bum until his arm falls off? The innings pitched has to come into play at some point, doesn’t it? I don’t see Zits being left off the roster for a seven game series, maybe for Affeldt. I could almost see them using Zit for game four at home, with the shortest fucking rope ever, and Bum in the pen. That’s not what I want, but I could see a case for it.

I don’t think they’ll make any position player changes. Although Velez has speed, didn’t he make some huge base running gaffs last year? Or am I thinking of someone else?

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on October 13, 2010 at 7:04 am

I could be wrong but I think Velez made huge *defensive* gaffs in the outfield last year. Or am I thinking of someone else?
And not to stir up shit but it was brought up here before the NLDS roster was announced that over extending Bumgarner’s arm has the *possibility* of a law suit if for any reason he’s injured. So that may come into the brain trust as well. On the other hand, this is as close as the Giants have been to the WS in 8 years. So….

      • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on October 13, 2010 at 7:19 am

Yeah Ted, whatever the knock on Velez was I’m sure will get sorted out by folks with a better memory.

If they go with Bum, as a #4, he would potentially only have two more starts or 12 – 14 innings to go. So maybe they are just going for it. Not shutting him down at the end of the year already goes beyond the logic for a young arm. Maybe it was a – kid we’re going for broke what do you think kinda deal. Or they don’t give a shit because they plan to trade him for Hanley Ramirez next year.
It will be interesting to see what they do.

      • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on October 13, 2010 at 7:23 am

At this point, it seems la toss up between Velez and Rowand. As to Zito, I have to agree: I was pretty impressed to see him sprint onto Turner Field to celebrate so enthusiastically. If MadBum does develop shoulder soreness — Zito’ll be right there to jump in as an injury replacement. Of course, Zito’s being paid real well to stay ready. And maybe the enthusiasm comes with the money too. . . . Great. Three and a half more days to hash over this stuff. Saturday really does seem a long way away.

What I want to know is where all this talk about Bum has a weak arm??? is this true? He appears fine to me. The bigger question is does Bochy change his rotation to R-L-R, Tim, Jonathon, Matt. I kinda like that rotation. Matt opens at home. And the other big question is how many of you are taking Tuesday off from work to watch the game since it is on at 1:00 PM. I am considering it!! I have a question about the weather…how is Philly different from NYC? Yesterday NY got over an inch of rain, Philly about .10. Two weeks ago tomorrow, when I left NYC it rained like hell all morning then stopped and we made our flights out of JFK. Next day in the paper they are showing floods in Philly and heavy rain Jersey area.

Chron has rain predicted for both cities starting Thurs; same for the entire coast from DC/Balt on up to Boston. Meanwhile it was 90 degrees all round the Bay Area yesterday with more of same predicted here.

Most vivid reminder I have of 62 series (6th grader at the time) was how much it rained here. And we did watch the final game in class, I’m pretty sure. Mateo Alou was an excellent bunter, drag down 1B line. Barely played in those days, but hit .340 for the Pirates couple years later.

Bozo’s right–we’re talking about two more starts, max, for MadBum. If he gets hurt the first series, activate Zito (with Selig’s approval, of course). But put Zito on the roster, as the 4? As a long reliever? Neither sounds good to me. Let the fucker sit unless they have to dial 911.

  12. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on October 13, 2010 at 9:48 am

You know, i’m only modestly concerned about the wear and tear on Bumgarner’s arm. Part of it is his build and part of it is his pitching style. Most of the early burnout types from over-use (Cubbies Prior and Wood) have been the constant high-heat, hard-riding fastball major strikeout types. Though countryboy from Caroline is built for power, he appears to be a more modulated sort, relying on a combination of pitches and approaches rather than one who turns the burner on high and hyperexerts on every pitch.

Secondly, one thing we have not seen from Madison is a tendency to wear down over the course of a game. Righetti and Bochy have wisely not tended to try extending him into the 8th and 9th innings or a hundred + pitches. For the most part his wont has been to get even stronger as the game goes into the fifth and sixth innings. Seventh and things get a bit more iffy, part of which is probably simple non- maintenance of concentration along with some wear.

So my observation and conclusion would be to continue with MadBum until and unless he shows signs of sagging. None observable so far and with his pitching style, if it does happen it is more likely to be somewhat gradual rather than sudden or dramatic. His composure is such as to indicate that he’s not likely to keep himself going on pure adrenaline~ or by the substance likely used by Derek Lowe the other evening.

  13. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on October 13, 2010 at 9:55 am

The thing is, when he came up last year, down the stretch, his velocity was WAY under what he was throwing early in the season.

This time around, there hasn’t been a drop-off. He was up around 92-93 the other day.

Is one more game (6-7) more innings going to be too much? If Zito gets the nod, that’s likely their thought processs, but I don’t think they’ll make the switch. Not when they’re THIS close. Cain hit the ground throwing 200 innings per year at a young age . . .

Cain going Tuesday ast the 3 also means Cain gets one start in SF and only one in Philly, and Sanchez two in Philly (assuming Philly lasts so long). In his three career starts at the bandbox Cain has given up 7 HRs. Sanchez has started there only twice. Much better numbers than Cain’s, for what that’s worth on such a small sample.

Sanchee in game #2. For the L-R thing, first. Second, as I said yesterday, more importantly Cain is a fly ball guy. Fly balls tend to become HRs at the bandbox, outs in ATT. Doesn’t mean Sanchee can’t give up a dinger or two there, but Cain’s pitching approach risks dingers more at that yard…

The Bumgarner innings count issue has been argued to death. At this point, they’ve already blatantly ignored the prevailing wisdom. I want to commend the Giants team members for their very fine gesture toward our old friend Bobby Cox at the conclusion of the National League Division Series.

They suspended their well deserved celebration to join Atlanta fans in applauding the retiring skipper as he left the field for the last time. Well, maybe there’s room for the brief Moneyball recap, after all. In the 2002 draft, Billy Beane famously picked Nick Swisher 16th. Philidelphia then took Cole Hamels, 17th. Given a second chance in the first round, Beane picked Joe Blanton 24th. The Giants then took Matt Cain 25th. This moment in A’s history brought to you by The Drumbeat, where a blog entry recently carried the headline: “What’s an A’s Fan to Do?” (Well, watch the Giants, of course.) Sabean’s looking pretty good by comparison these days.

If the Phillies bump Hamels to the second game, they then would go Oswalt in a Game 7…I like that better than Hamels.

I think Sanchez pitching second is more than sensible, but I think Bochy played the Atlanta series the way he wants it to play out with Philly. I dont expect any changes to the roster or to the rotation.

The only case you can make for Zito on the roster now is that you fear there could be an extra inning game that goes 13-14 innings in the first two games and then instead of burning your bullpen completely so early in the series, you may then have to go with Bumgarner to pitch 2-3 innings (no way I would stick Zito into that spot) in an extended extra inning game.

You then would need Zito to start a game 4. But how would Zits-man pitch with all that pressure at home? Probably fold again.

So I suspect that Bochy stays with things as is. Can we count on Runzler in a big situation if he were to replace Mota? I am not too confident…

After the Giants won the last game of the season Bochy’s interview on the radio, from the club house, was fun to hear. He was loose and relaxed, none of that stiff cautious stuff designed to protect his players (“well, he’s been scufflin’ and not hittin’ as well as we know he can hit, so . . . .”). Instead, Bochy was happy and garrulous. Describing how his pace around the field to high-five the fans differed from his players’, he said it was sort of an “old-bull young-bull kind of thing.” I’m not sure the woman interviewing him was familiar with the joke that ends: “Naw. Let’s walk down and fuck em all.”

But I’d say almost 3 weeks sitting 1/2 mile down not knowing if up top is going to find you is pretty damn rough. These dudes are coming up in that capsule looking pretty good. I know this is a setup against my own emotions, but I totally see us beating Philly AND winning the Series. Why not, at this point? Just a little bit of faith is enough.

      Small Wire

      My faith
      is a great weight
      hung on a small wire,
      as doth the spider
hang her baby on a thin web,
      as doth the vine,
      twiggy and wooden,
      hold up grapes
      like eyeballs,
      as many angels
dance on the head of a pin.

      God does not need
too much wire to keep Him there,
      just a thin vein,
with blood pushing back and forth in it,
      and some love.
      As it has been said:
      Love and a cough
      cannot be concealed.
      Even a small cough.
      Even a small love.
So if you have only a thin wire,
      God does not mind.
      He will enter your hands
as easily as ten cents used to
      bring forth a Coke.

Unless Brooks Conrad ends up on the Phillies, there’ll be a whole lot less mistakes to take advantage of. So the Giants need to seize every opportunity and not give away anything to Philly. All 4 DS games were won by the team with the fewest errors. Because the Phill’s offesnse is so good, error-free baseball is a must.

Nice blurb about Dirty from ESPN:
Why’d the Giants switch Jonathan Sanchez to Game 2. He beat the Phillies twice during the regular season, holding them to a .114 batting average. The Phillies have a .175 batting average against Sanchez, the worst they’ve hit against any active pitcher who has thrown 30 or more innings against them. Change the qualifier from 30 innings to five starts and Sanchez rates second-best among anyone in the last 55 years. His .175 is even 10 points better than the immortal Sandy Koufax. There are a lot of favorable matchups for Sanchez: Jayson Werth is 0-for-12 against him. Jimmy Rollins is 1-for-16. Carlos Ruiz is 1-for-9. Ben Francisco is 0-for-8. Raul Ibanez is 0-for-6.

Not a huge leap of logic. With Zito out of the way (or even IN the way), it’s a no-brainer. Zito can go 4th if the Giants are up 3-0.

Well, fuck it. No soup for Barry. Bummie gets win #2 at PB to clinch the sweep. . . .
