A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Back to Philly

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 22, 2010

It would have been great to close it out in front of the hometown crowd but it just wasn’t going to happen. Philly played great, Madson was especially sickening in the 8th.

If Philly can beat Lincecum and Dirrrrty and Cain in three consecutive games, my hat is off to them and good luck in the World Series. But I don’t think for a second that that’s going to happen……

Last night I just kept thinking how COOL post season baseball is. I’m living and dying on every pitch, every hit. As I watched the game at my friend’s sportsbar last night it was great to feel the camaraderie in the room. Of course there were tons of jersey’s worn but there were guys with fake freaking black beards on. In a bar. 40 miles away from the park….Everywhere I go, almost everyone I pass on the street is all about the Giants right now. Bandwagon jumpers? Of course. But a  community has come together and that’s the best part of all this…..

So I wasn’t sweating last night’s loss for a second. The totality of all of this is just too delicious to not enjoy. I’m loving every single second of it, before the games, during the games, after the games. It’s all good right now…….

Like Dennis, I was emotionally depleted last night after Game 4 and the martinis at dinner did not help.

But as a true Giant fan, I can’t help but think of 3-2 playoff leads in ’87 and ’02…please Dear Buddha don’t let that happen again (I prayed to God before for Giant playoff victories, if this does not work, I may have to turn to Satan!)

Anyone know why we chose not to leave for Philly until 11 AM this morning? The Phils left last night. If the Yankees win tonight, and they will, we get the day game tomorrow. I don’t like our travel arraignments one iota. Who the hell is our asst. to the traveling secretary, George Costanza?

Anyone having a good morning is on a helluva lot better medication than I am. Fuck you.

I think it makes sense, Dennis. The Phils were pumped up, eager to get home. The Giants need a night of rest in their own environment, get things in perspective, and get ready for the trip to Philly.

That hung-over feeling after a bad loss. We been there, done that so many times that it’s become second nature for Giants fans. In the past SF teams have gone into Game Six with a good head of steam, a lot of confidence and not much experience dealing with torture. This one is different. The current model team has demonstrated time and again that they can absorb punch after punch and then bounce back and do the impossible.

It’s not quite so impossible, though, when you lead 3 games to two, have Sanchez and Cain slated for the (if necessary) two next starts and also have a Sandoval and Huff with some atoning to do and Burrell and Posey due to make a statement or two. Expect more torture along the way, but we’re gonna see the Halloween Machine win this in an Orange and Black October.

It IS a fecking hungover feeling, and I’m sober [more like abstinent] over 30 muthafeckin years. Magnus, you have more equanimity than I do. I’m in Dennis’s camp, Camp Uber-Anxious-Quasi-Suicidal High-Anxiety.

I don’t understand how some of you guys can be so damn confident at this point in the series. These are our SF Giants, after all, and it seems like they are duty-bound to gut their fans when they get this close to something good. I wish I could be so Pollyannish. That park is going to be a frothing madhouse this weekend, and I’d literally be shocked if the G’s pulled it off.

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday. As I was walking around the financial district in S.F., as usual, one overhears snippets of conversations here and there and at least 3 times I heard a variation of:
Person 1 “Okay, well, gotta get back”
Person 2 “Yeah, me too. Take it easy”
Person 1 “You too. Go Giants”
    Person 2 “Go Giants”

  15. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on October 22, 2010 at 12:44 pm

I agree the big difference with past history is the starting pitchers we can put out there in Game 6, and Game 7 (if necessary.) If a Game 7 is needed, Cain is far better than pitchers we’ve put out there in Game 7s before. The depth of thiis starting staff is the best ever for the SF Giants.

I never knew that torture could be this fun. I’m having the time of my life right now. As I’ve said before I missed the last trip to the ws because I was in basic training. In 89 I was only 11 and couldn’t completely grasp the totality of the situation. Now, I’m enjoying every minute of this. I have full confidence in this team. This is our year!! I know this deep down in the deepest parts of my soul. Dirrty will be just that tomorrow. Oswalt is gonna come down from his adrenaline high and get lit up. Let’s get it!

Anybody who bails now is a wimp. They’re giving it everything they’ve got. As fans, we should too. Win or lose, it’s gonna be great.

I’ve read a couple times today that “mentally” it’s a good thing the Giant are going to a game 6 up 3 to 2 after having just *lost* a game as opposed to winning. Could be.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on October 22, 2010 at 4:12 pm

I think they, you, and especially me, would feel better “mentally” going to a Game 6 knowing we’d be facing Phat Joe Blanton again and not Roy Oswalt. I wonder if the team has a psychiatrist on staff to handle all the “mentally” challenged. I know a few if they need one.

Bounces went the phillies way last night and they pulled out a W by the skin of their teeth. This season has been a roller coaster of constipated emotions. No reason it should be easy now.

You want to be the NL champ you gotta beat the NL champs.

5,6,7 games. I don’t give a shit. Just get one more.

Gotta disagree, Xoot. As the players themselves say, you never know if you’ll be in this position again. As a Giant fan since ’63, I know how rare these opportunities are. So, even though I didn’t expect them to get to this point, losing now would be a grave disappointment.

Couldn’t agree more Loo…Being this close to the brass ring and not able to grab it would stink.Winning is the only option now!!The Giants need to come out blazing , Dirty needs to come out throwing strikes,no 35 pitch innings to start the game like last time, force the issue, have Torres going instead of the stop sign that Bochy is giving him. Steal, hit and run play smart defense and get the Phillies obnoxious fans out of the game early,by putting a cripple number up some how.

Well, this might explai Sandoval’s somewhat sluggishness in last night’s game. From Leah Garchik’s column in today’s SFChronicle:
    ————————————————————————————————
Kostas Sakellaropouloswas coming home from work and stopped at El Farolito in the Mission at midnight Wednesday. In line ordering “a pile of tacos to go,” another customer chatted up the taco-maker. Finally, a fan recognized Pablo Sandoval, who “jumped in his black Escalade and drove off with his tacos, leaving a bunch of stunned fans in his wake.”
    ————————————————————————————————
A pile of tacos at midnight the day of a possible pennant clinching game?
    Oh Pablo, Pablo, Pablo

Yankees are getting their asses handed to em in the Fifth. Texas has plated four more runs and now leads 5-1. Unless the Evil Empire gets to the softer parts of the Texas BP, it would appear that the upset is happening and that the DeRangers will represent the Junior Circuit next week. I know some posters would rather the Giants face the Yankees because Giants pitchers could stifle their offense. However, NY has been in enough W.S. contests to last them for the next hundred years or so. They richly deserve to lose.

Were they chicken or beef? That could make all the difference in the world when trying to get back and tag third base. I was having a heated discussion this morning with a pal of mine about who is the better player/who do you want on your team “going forward” (I hate that fucking term)/ who would end up having the better career—Pablo or Alex Smith? That incident isn’t going to help my defense for “Taco Boy.”

  35. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on October 22, 2010 at 7:30 pm
