A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

At 4:57pm, the World ENDS!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 23, 2010

Or apparently that’s what it will feel like to some of you if we lose today based off the posts yesterday and some emails that I got. I guess I’m with the minority, I just am not gonna be devastated if they don’t make it to the World Series. And it won’t be a choke-job, either. Philly is a very good team, if they can beat Lincecum/Dirrrrrty/Cain successively, more power to them. I am still just too busy enjoying the Hell out of post season baseball to sweat “what if?”

But I will tell you that despite hating them with a passion, I started growing a beard last Saturday. It’s just about grown full in and I WILL be dying it black if/when we make it to the World Series. Flavor doesn’t roll with the phony beard look…….

And if we don’t make it? I just shave this bad boy off and look back on one of the top three baseball seasons I have ever had the pleasure of watching as a Giants fan. Don’t *player hate*, my friends, *dominate* and if that doesn’t work for ya, or you don’t get it, then just go back to worrying about the sky caving in on you later tonight. If there’s a Game 7, instead of worrying about a loss, focus on the rare electricity and the feeling of finality that you get to experience for about 3 hours. You know what? I hope it does go 7……..

    Bring it on, Philly.
Two stories of note this a.m. A Giants/Rangers WS ensures Benji a ring — with whoever wins. And Cody Ross’s arm (HBP the other day) is not good.

First light. A contractor whose bid I accepted in July failed to reseal my roof before the first big storm of the season — and that big god damned storm is wheeling in from the Pacific right now. So I’ve been drinking coffee and waiting for dawn. Time to climb up there with the bucket of wet-patch cement and save the fucking house. What a circumstance. I’m lucky to have something going on serious enough to take my mind off of the game for a few hours. Well, hope it’s just a few. . . .

    Go Giants.

ugh, what a pain in the ass Xoot. Good luck. The Molina/Posey story just keeps getting better and better. But it’s really the only story line that will hold my interest if we make it that far. I really wanted to play the Yankees…….

Happy Elimination Day for any fellow Yankee haters out there! Although, if the Giants make it to the WS, I may regret that because the Rangers look pretty damn tough.

glad for Wash and Nolan Ryan. Lee and the kid shut down Yanks til Texas bats woke up, and they hit pretty well vs. Yanks PS. Joe and FO got some splainin to do.

Should SF be fortunate enough to get there, lot more guys to pay attention to than Benjie. It is funny how guys like Uribe, Huff, Burrell were wanted by absolutely no one and have made it this far, and A-Rod and his buddies get to watch the best of baseball season from the couch.

Oh, and it is time for some video evidence of the beard to be feared, Flav. Like the joke I used to hear Lamont and Tonelli make about the porn stars who dyed their nether region, “Carpet doesn’t match the drapes”?

Yeah Xoot, good luck with the roof.

Funny, last night I shaved the scraggly damn beard I had grown for a week.

I’m trying, but it’s hard to suppress the competitive fires. I WANT TO WIN, DAMMIT. So many years being disappointed have taken their toll. I remind myself of what’s important and it’s just baseball. Mindful of what Michael and others are going through helps keep perspective.

Before the game I’ll take a walk with the dog and do some deep breathing exercises, reminding myself it’s ok if it doesn’t happen. It’s been a great ride.

    Right.

By the time Sanchez throws his first pitch, I just know I’m going to turn into a ‘snarrk’ raving lunatic for about 3 hrs.

Just had a pretty surreal last hour. I went for a run down to town to pick up my car– all five people that ran past me said “go giants””, which I obviously reciprocated. Picked the car up and the guy hosing down the pavement in front of “First and Main” asked me if we were gonna do it tonight. Went into Draeger’s to pick up some of their sweeeeeeet bacon from the butcher and he started a five minute conversation about “torture” and how this HAS to go 7 games. Got in line and the old woman behind me told me she misses Barry Bonds. The check out guy, who is draped from top to bottom in giants gear, said he hopes it goes 7 because Draegers only let’s their employees dress up in schwag on game days……Admittedly, I was wearing a giants shirt, but I didn’t start even one of those conversations and literally every single person I interacted with this morning talked Giants with me. I know this will all be over soon, but the transformation of my community into what it is right now is stunning……

98 wins on the season and counting. Five to go brings the Giants 103, the same number they got in the regular season when the Braves mulcted Crime Dog from the Dagos and took 104. This time 103 wins it all.

    Hey Flav,

I agree this has been an awesome, and somewhat unexpected postseason. That being said..NO WAY do I want a 7th game. Too much to chance (error from a 3rd baseman perhaps!). I am 45, and my dad is 75. I don’t want to be pulling a Red Sox nation and putting SI cover at a headstone. Lets get this done now.

Jonathan Sanchez….It’s going to be great to get to the W/S.Never been there. We’ve got alot of guys on the team that never been there and to be able to do that,it’s going to be something special for me.

I like it.What I see there,is confident man,he’s not making predictions,he’s confident in his ability to get us there.Let’s end this Shit tonight!!!!! We don’t need no stinkin game 7.

There’s Giants fever in the Central Valley, too. Not quite as much as the Bay Area probably, but it’s definitely here.
It must drive A’s fans crazy. Their team has won several World Series, but they’re just not all that much beloved. The A’s arrived in the Bay Area later, the early ’70s teams weren’t easy to warm up to because of Charlie Finley’s lack of promotion of the team and his overall prickly attitude that seemed to set the tone for their whole organization.
The late ’80s A’s were always the favored team, and lost two of those World Series to the underdog. And now it turns out that that team was a fraud anyway because of steroid use.
I don’t dig that Fishie dude on the Splash, but I kind of understand his bitterness. He’s an A’s fan, and he doesn’t feel part of a baseball community.
Why are the Giants hated by some? Because we have a baseball community they are jealous of.

Seeing alot of stories saying that SF blew it in game 5 as if this thing is over now. Give me a break. It is hard to beat any ML club 3 straight and the phillies haven’t been to the NLCS 3 straight because they are lucky.

I haven’t poured through the season schedule but outside of the hot start to the second half I don’t remember a lot of big streaks by SF this year. They got it done in the second half by winning series after series. Win one. Drop one. Win 2. Drop 1. This is how SF has been doing it all year. I’m not nervous about today’s game. I am stoked. This club has taken us all on an awesome journey since spring. I don’t think they’re done yet.

Torres/Fruckie: Bip is right on this, those guys get on, Huff and Buster see fast balls….Andres has to make Oswalt get the ball up. And run..I expect Uribe/Renteria to man the left side tonight.

  21. JBat's avatar JBat said, on October 23, 2010 at 10:59 am

One weakness the Rangers do have is their bullpen (IMO), except for maybe Feliz. If you can get to the set-up guys, they can be beat. We saw that in game 1 of the ALCS. And I still think their back of the rotation guys are beatable too. The key will be to make the starters work and get ’em out of the game ASAP. That and we’d have home field advantage. Yeah, their offense is very good, but so is our pitching.

    GO GIANTS!!

    • mrmrbill's avatar mrmrbill said, on October 23, 2010 at 4:06 pm

according to Schulman: “UPDATE: Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed the main reasoning for the lineup switch was defense.

“It makes us a little stronger on the left side of the infield as far as defense,” he said. “Edgar has faced Oswalt quite a bit, too, and he’s been swinging the bat better.”
