Dark Day
That’s what they call a day of no horse racing. Dark Day. Today feels like a dark day. No college football. No Giants news. The only thing to look forward to is how many yards Alex Freaking Smith throws for tomorrow. Buzzkill. I snapped this photo of the Cardinal practice field when I was on a run this morning. It’s kinda hard to read: “You are getting better or you are getting worse; you never stay the same”— I thought of Sabean….

How come my days are darkest when the track is actually open?
Since we started last season with an outfield of De Rosa, Rowand, and Bowker….we ARE better already going into next season.
The only thing I don’t like about next season is having to have so many games on the road that first week, against L.A. and S.D. If the Giants split those 6 games, that would actually be a good start; but watch the doomers and trolls go to town if the Giants have a .500 first week. Of course, doomers and trolls never understand a lot of basic things. Like, how winning a lot at home, and being .500 on the road is an absolute recipe for getting to the playoffs, year in and year out.
Went over to sportsbook.com to check out the props, see if they had an O/U for Alex Smith yds.
They have the numbers posted for TROY Smith. O/U 190.5 yds. I’m beginning to smell a rat in this contest. š
Waldis Joaquin rejected the White Sox waiver claim to become a free agent & signed a minor league deal w/ the Giants.
If one of our 5 starters went down, who would plug in as of today?
Yeah, I don’t want to think about it either.
Personally i’m alittle pissed that the Giants lost LHP Joe Paterson in the Rule 5 draft to the Diamondbacks.Paterson pitched well in the very tough AAA PCL last year.Has the same pitching motion as Javier Lopez, very tough on Lefties. The D-Backs bullpen is horrible,so Paterson will likely stick on their 25 man roster and be lost to the Giants.Personally I would have dropped Alex Hinshaw from the 40 man roster to protect Paterson.
Have 15 for the Alex Sweepstakes, the contest is a go but I’d like 5 more…average yards so far is 247…
i appear to have been, optimistic, about tomorrow.
I appear to have been the opposite
Blu ray tonight for sure
after I nail this number cold I will release my couldn’t miss approach to nailing this number. Cold.
I can’t find a single book that lists Alex in the O/U prop for yds. Something ain’t right.
Twin, if Alex doesn’t start/play, what happens?
How much do you think Cam Newton’s dad won betting on him today? 1-9, that’s a tough bet to take….
I feel bad for athlete’s who get *criminalized* by the NCAA for doing what a lot of poor kids naturally try to do: try to make money when the opportunity presents itself. In fact, don’t we all do that? The NCAA never goes after the sub-culture of agents who chase these kids. That’s the fucked up part…..
And so on this “dark day”, I’ll steer the discussion back to baseball for a moment, as I have a question for which I’ve not been able to find the answer and I just KNOW that someone here will know. I have read about the contracts that were signed (Huff, Tejada, Fontenot) and read about the, what, 7 or 8 players who were ‘tendered” contracts as arb-eligible players. What does “tendered contracts” mean? As I’m guessing these are not contracts left in the fridge to marinate overnight, and as I’ve seen no terms of contracts announced to players such as Ross, Lopez, etc., do they now go to arbitration, which will determine their pay for.. what, a one-year contract? No negotiation with agents, just win or lose at arbitration? Just curious…
Michael, saw your little avatar photo and clicked on it because as a thumbnail, it looked to me like an old pic of your Father. Love the photo of you holding the paper and smiling, and never realized how much you actually do resemble him. He was always one of my favorite announcers.
Thanks, and here’s ( I hope), your answer. So happy you are back, Paul. “Tender” is, basically to “offer”, as I understand it. In these cases, the team has agreed to enter into a contract at an amount either agreed upon by both parties or by an arbitrator. If the latter, each party submits a figure, the arbitrator chooses one or the other. Obviously it’s preferable to do it before it goes to arbitration, as each side gets to argue that the other is full of shit..
Ok, thanks, Michael, that’s what I thought, but wasn’t sure. I do remember some arb cases getting nasty (hence your statement that it’s preferable to get it done beforehand)… somehow thinking that won’t be the case this year. Everybody is still feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Well, except for Uribe.
(Not)AsianPaul: I’m still totally down with Uribe— if he wants to go play for the Dodgers, knock yourself out, dude. But there was something magical about the SF uni that guy would put on every day. The Dodger gear will just not have the same effect. Book it.
Twin, sent ya my contest guess. Alex is playing tomorrow, isn’t he?
For all I know they’ll bring in Freddie Solomon and run the goddamn option. That’ll at least make Singletary happy.
Agree, BF. And I love how Sabean so quickly signed Tejada to replace him, kinda saying “no problem, Juan, enjoy LA”…
