Eugenio Velez + New Contest Update
I know this happened days ago so I’m a little late to the good bye party, but I am super bummed that we let Velez get away. I can’t remember if it was 2008 or 2009 (maybe it was both) but that dude probably led the team in my “Player of the Game” picks. For a guy who only played in 98 and 84 games in those seasons that’s pretty incredible.
Then last year we sign De Rosa, Velez loses his shot. Then he gets hit in the head and is basically done for the year. And now, not only is he gone but he’s playing for the freaking Dodgers. Have any of you checked out who their left fielder is next year?
There is a very real possibility that it will be Eugenio Velez (unless you believe Jay Gibbons is going to beat him in Spring Training…..
I dunno, I think Sabean dropped the ball on this one. Maybe we won’t miss him, maybe he’ll just get stuck at the level of production he’s at and spend most of his time engaged in maddening fits of idiocy. But I’m telling you, all those POTG awards were legit.
Good bye Count Chocula. I have a terrible feeling that you are going to spend the next 5 years or so tormenting us…….

I will give one player leeway. In other words, if a player signs before the deadline ( 12-25 1 P.M), that’s a freebie. If you have questions get your picks in FIRST.
I don’t see velez being the guy that pushes the dodgers into relevence. That being said it would have been nice to see him go somewhere where I could actively root for the guy.
It was 2009 that Velez carried the team for about three weeks after his recall July 27. It was crucial because the Garko/Sanchez deals didn’t work out for that season. Although he slumped late, the team would never have been in it if not for Eugenio. He hit in his first 14 games and .355 from July 27 to August 18.
What Krukow has noted about im several times is how much is performance is affectd by his confidence level- his splits in 2009 reflect that-in LF where he was much more comfortable, his OPS was .813. At second base it was .514…
I’ll miss him, he was one of a kind, and Dodger or not, I wish him well..
Uh, Dennis: Ebenezer Scrooge? Hope you don’t need help with your PC, fuckface…
Interesting read regarding EV being released and goin to the dodgers….

Velez picked up the slack in 09 when pablo slumped. Good luck to him now. And ff dennis specified the Good Scrooge.
Tf was what I meant
Good Scrooge, Smood Scrooge. You get to be Olberman,Z is Penn…and I’m this dyspepsic old fart. Fuck that. Meanwhile he clings to the delusion that the Sobber is what she claims to be. “A young Susan Sarandon”….right, played by Chris Crocker..

It’s been said many times his talent was tantalizing, but maddeningly inconsistent. I just don’t see where Velez would have picked up any playing time and better to give a younger guy (Velez will be 29 in May) with upside the spot on the 40.
Flav: Yer doing a good job by the numbers. Particularly apt that you chose Torres’ jersey for my magic number. Watching Andres the Giant perform was a special treat this year, particularly as it had been 56 years since the franchise had won the Big Wowie. Kinda felt that the right guy wearing that number meant something good would happen. It all came together this year.
09 I think EV also picked up for the struggling/hurt/I want outta here Fred Lewis. Good on him if he can win a starting job. Although, as a Giants fan, I hope the Dodgers use him mainly as a pinch runner.
Was he out of options?

Dyspepsic?
good contest, I’ll post that on the main page now.
What’s your problem with Denny?
No biggie- he posted celeb look aikes- I’m fucking Scrooge..
The transformed Mr. Scrooge, the man who gives Bob Cratchit a raise, buys he and his family the prize Christmas goose, the man who hoists Tiny Tim upon his shoulders, the man who has seen the error of his ways only to embody the true meaning of the Christmas spirit is the man admired most of all.
Color yourself fortunate, Ebenezer.
Ah, but *which* cleleb Scrooge? Reginald Owen? Alastair Sim? Albert Finney? George C. Scott? Buddy Hacket? Bill Murray? Mister Magoo?…
And don’t forget Michael Caine’s wonderful performance in the Muppet Christmas Carol, my favorite of the Christmas Carols.
Yeah. It’s weird I left out Michael Caine. Especially considering I just watched it again last night. I must have thought I typed his name beofre I posted
I grew up watching the 1951 version with Alastair Sim. That’ll always be my favorite.
[to himself, laughing] “A Merry Christmas, Ebenezer! You old HUMBUG! Oh, and a Happy New Year! As if you deserved it!”
Back in the 8th grade, I wanted to play the part of Bob Cratchit in our school’s version of “A Christmas Carol.” Sr. Madeleine didn’t think I was right for the part. She said I wasn’t ready for such a role. I got stuck playing the little boy who Scrooge sends to the butcher shop to fetch Cratchit’s prize goose. Definitely not the marquee billing I was looking for.
Not ready? I seem to recall Sr. telling me I wasn’t ready for Salesian High either.
Wise women that Sr. Madeleine.
Rough Trade said it right,EV was way too inconsistent a player.Yeah he would show some flashes of power, then it would disappear .Had speed, but didn’t know how to use it.Horrible bunter didn’t help his game either.
But i will have one special place in my heart for EV,when he totally wiped out Russel Martin at the plate. Now that was awesome!! Fuck the Dodgers!!
Gotta be TIMMY’s #55 tomorrow right? 2World Series wins over Lee,plus the Clincher.
I always liked watching Geno take batting practice… he hit the crap out of the ball for such a little guy… I think with him though he was ok at a lot of things, but he wasn’t great at anything and wasn’t consistent with the things he was ok with… Right?
Velez as tormentor? Doubtful. If anything, he gets put in as a pinch runner, and promptly gets picked off.
I really liked EV, he had trouble reading pitchers to be a good base stealer, but when he did get on and he could tell that a fly ball was going to drop, he could go from 1st to 3rd no problem.
There are so many quirks to Velez’s game. All that speed, yet horrible at beating out slow infield grounders because he twists himself into a corkscrew on his backswing.
Will Favre play tonight, or won’t he? Oh my gosh. It’s a riveting question.
I just caught a clip of Timmy at the Seahawks game yesterday. He was wearing a #12 “Twelfth Man” blue Seattle jersey trying to fire up the crowd.
Too bad Timmy couldn’t step in and play QB for the Seahawks. Hasselbeck stunk up the joint.
On Velez, come on now. There was no place for him to play with the Giants, and he was out of options. When he did play, he was a disaster waiting to happen most of the time. He had a shining three weeks or so. Otherwise, it was a flash of brilliance in between two bonehead plays. Even Kruk and Kuip became exasperated with the guy. If it wasn’t droppin can o corn flies, it was getting picked off, misjudging a liner, or some crazy ass baserunning faux pas. When the LA Times reported the pick up, it was almost with disdain. Good luck to him. But at 29, I doubt he’s going to suddenly turn into the reincarnation of Willie Davis…
Velez or Rowand given your druthers? I go with Eugenio….
Uh, no.
Row Row is better on the D side and he can ride a hot streak for 3 weeks just as well.
Now, Gino or Ray Ray as 2nd?
You make the call . . .
hyuk . . .
Gino in LF is an adventure. Gino in CF would be a nightmare
Yeah, Rowand had a very nice June that same yr (.320/.878.11Rbi’s,3hrs)
Forget the dough he’s being paid and he’s fine as a backup CF. I just wish he’d ditch the Bagwell crouch.
If you could offload Rohand’s contract, sure, I’d keep Velez. But agreed, Velez in center would be a defensive freak show. He’s gotta play LF if he plays outfield. I would think Nate could sub in center if needed when Torres is out, unless Nate is offloaded, too…
We have enough LF candidates to depth chart half the league. 🙂
Here’s Timmy at the Seahawk game. Not one mention of Mike Singletary or Alex Smith.
I always did say that Timmy was one smart cookie. Still needs a haircut tho…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6D9KXvbJIDQ
Singletary — like parachute pants and mullets — is a memory best left back in the 80s.
I loved the next interview. Karl Ravetch asks him “what do you think is going on in SF? Tim says, “Beer is flowing, and smoke is in the air, I’m hoping.”
Timmy can root for whatever NFL team he wants. He’s showing intelligence not rooting for the Niners, and just rooting for the hometown team. Especially since he just bought a pricey unit in a condo tower in downtown Seattle…
Giants resign Guillermo Mota, Always good to have Mota in the dugout just in case Timmy needs it.
KAT: It was a minor league deal with an invite..
Cody Ross can play CF
With all the crazy contracts getting thrown around at relievers this off season, and with at least 3 teams interested in Mota, I’m very surprised that’s the best deal he could find…..
Well, Mota’s ERA was slightly on the high side. Who were the other teams interested?
Kinda funny to even have” finalists” for a minor league player. I would have been fine if Colletti took him to add to his table scraps.Guess the Giants just wanted to add extra depth for ST games.
ChuckleFuck now makes Rowand indispensible. Too fuckng funny.

Dodgers, Giants, Rays Finalists For Guillermo Mota
By Mark Polishuk [December 16, 2010 at 6:17pm CST]
But, obviously there was only one team interested, and barely so…..
quote from that article:
Guillermo Mota has been offered minor league contracts from five clubs and the “finalists” for his services are the Dodgers, Giants and Rays, reports Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes (Twitter link).
is it just me or are the ESPN deportes guys scoopin’ all the regular espn guys?
It seems that way. At least with the Giants’ players
Ah, come on now. ESPN can’t be blamed- it takes a lot of time and effort to be devoted to the Yankees and Red Sox 24/7.
And how about the Yankees…..they lost out on Kerry Wood, too.
Yanks are in big trouble next year. I love it. I’ll watch as many games of theirs in 2011 as I possibly can. There’s nothing better than watching a team with a 220+ million dollar payroll wobble along into the wild card. At best……
Speaking of “wobbling” into the playoffs, I’m back ON rooting for the absurd NIners to get there. It’s just too funny to ignore or not root for. Can you imagine if the Niners somehow beat the Saints in the first round of the playoffs? It could totally happen, they almost did it this year, there would be no pressure on them whatsoever…..a couple of crazy Brees interceptions returned for TD’s or a Ted Ginn Special….you never know…could be a great story unfolding.
I’m in!
I’m sorry, but a Rose Bowl should never be TCU/Wisconsin. If they’re going to have bowls instead of a playoff, then the bowls should have some kind of rhyme or reason to them.
either that or they get destroyed 55-10 by the Saints and that wouldn’t be the worst thing ever. Watching Niner Nation unload on Singletary (who I will always hate for his stupid-ass, IGNORANT comments about dyslexia last Summer) would give me a good chuckle……..
ZUMIE– it’s dumb to ask all college football fans to travel so far geographically. Would I go down to the Rose Bowl? Hell yes! Am I going to go to Florida? Haha. And it’s totally uncool to fuck up the history of some of these great bowl show downs.
I totally agree.
your grand daddy doesn’t ever change into some new dude……
unless your grand mother is a whore……
Here’s someone named Doc Moseman, from Bleacher Report, ranking the top 10 bowl games this year:
10. Capital One Bowl: Alabama vs. Michigan State
Michigan State is ranked No. 9. Alabama is ranked No. 16. Michigan State is 11-1 and Big Ten co-champions. Alabama is 9-3 and did not even get to play for an SEC title. But Alabama is favored by 10. The game will be fun to watch just to see how much more college football handicappers know than everyone else.
9. Cotton Bowl: LSU vs. Texas A&M
The best thing about the Cotton Bowl is that it’s only one of two bowl games not on the ESPN mafia family of networks. FOX will air this showdown scheduled at a new time, Friday night, Jan. 7, in Cowboys Stadium. This bowl game is probably the best chance to see January football at Cowboys Stadium.
8. MAACO Bowl Las Vegas: Utah vs. Boise State
The game is in Las Vegas, it features the biggest favorite of bowl season (Boise State by 17), two teams who are a combined 21-3, two prolific offenses and one incredibly ticked football squad. The Broncos thought they would be playing in early January. Instead, because of a missed chip shot field goal, they’ll be playing Dec. 22. Poor Utah.
7. Hawaii Bowl: Hawaii vs. Tulsa
They should rename this “The perfect television event to hold you over from Christmas Eve dinner until Midnight Mass.” The annual Christmas Eve tradition, the Hawaii Bowl, kicks off at 8 p.m. EST, Dec. 24. Of the 119 teams who play Division I football, 118 would love to be in this game. Hawaii is not one of them.
6. Outback Bowl: Penn State vs. Florida
Maybe I am overreacting for a matchup of 7-5 teams, but consider the following: The game is on New Year’s Day. Florida has a hotshot new coach, Will Muschamp, who may or may not be there. The Gators are unveiling new Nike uniforms for the game. Most importantly, Urban Meyer is 46 years old. Joe Paterno has been coaching 45 years. Meyer is the one retiring after this game.
5. Fiesta Bowl: Connecticut vs. Oklahoma
There is always that one David vs. Goliath game in the BCS, and Oklahoma usually gets stuck playing as Goliath. However, in this case calling UConn David is an insult to David. The point spread is 17, and ESPN is not even treating it like a BCS game. They are dispatching Sean McDonough and Matt Millen to call this bloodbath, although it is one of a few bowl games to be broadcast in 3D.
If I were a Connecticut fan, I would stick to watching the beatdown in 2D, or maybe just listen on the radio, or maybe just pick up a newspaper Jan. 2, or maybe just watch Connecticut basketball. Women’s, that is.
4. Sugar Bowl: Ohio State vs. Arkansas
Ohio State in a BCS bowl game is getting to be like listening to a broken record. However, they get to face some new BCS blood with Arkansas. The game also features big-time quarterbacks with Terrelle Pryor and Ryan Mallett.
3. Orange Bowl: Stanford vs. Virginia Tech
In the past a matchup between teams like this would be called the Catholics vs. the Convicts. Since Stanford is not a Catholic school, we’ll just settle with the Cardinal vs. the Convicts. All moral issues out of the way, this should be wildly entertaining.
2. Rose Bowl: TCU vs. Wisconsin
Stanford vs. Wisconsin would be a heck of a game here, and it’s likely what the old guard of the Rose Bowl wants, but tradition be darned, the undefeated Horned Frogs are a lot of fun to watch, and everybody wants to know how they would hang with a perennial Big Ten power. On New Year’s Day we finally find out.
1. BCS National Championship Game: Oregon vs. Auburn
Any argument for a college football playoff gets hurt when the best game of the bowl season is the National Championship Game. Does anybody really need a round of 16 or a plus-one or some other hokey playoff idea to figure out that Auburn and Oregon need to play and need to play now? The “over/under” is 74.5—first to 40 points is your next national champion.
Alex has a better shot of being in the playofs than Aaron Rodgers. You’ll excuse me if I think that’s rich..
I don’t dislike Alex Smith at all, I just have no idea why you like him so much…..
Stanford (or Snodfart as we once called it) in the Rose Bowl and we’re down there. Wife went to Ohio State so the RB is always a war in our house. went down last year and found myself actually rooting for osu because the duck fans are OBNOXIOUS.
Stanford/Wisconsin would have been a great game. they sure better beat them mountaineers. ‘cuz i do hate me some hillbillies.
I’m not going to remind over and over about the contest this time. Deadline is 1 P.M. Christmas day. 4 entrants so far. If there aren’t 20, it’s off.
Regarding the 49ers and their playoff hopes and aspirations. This coming from yours truly who lives for our Giants, but would die for the Niners. The Niners who have during my lifetime have once; cost me a job, twice sent me to jail, and thrice sent me to the hospital. I have two words for this weekend…
GO RAMS ! ! !
Timmy has apparently made the cover of SI this week. Some kind of celebration issue, year end style. He’s popping champagne, no spliff in sight. This kid has the world by the tail….
This photo I’ve been using as an icon for a week or so is part of the story, too. That pic caught Lincecum walking to the visitors’ clubhouse in Texas, before his great game 5.
I’m not so sure he’s a kid anymore. He’s a helluva baseball player. Decades from now, his statue outside the China Basin ballpark definitely will portray the long hair flying mid-wind up.
The decision to take the chance on him in the draft was brilliant. Give it up.
Velez was my pic for surprise player of 2010. Oh well..
Niners have a good chance. Seattle will lose to TB and Niners will beat the Rams. Then we control our own destiny, and will fucking lose against lowly AZ because we will be on the one, down by 4, last seconds, and The Moron / head coach will forget it’s 4th down and order Smith to spike the ball…Better yet he will decide V.Davis is the best blocker ever and not let him go out for a pass. Crabtree either..man does that sound bitter?
Most likely is we clinch the game on a Clements int, only he will try for the pick 6, fumble, and Az will kick winning field goal.
The ball will go the the HOF to represent Clements making the most boneheaded play in the history of NFL (after miracle at meadowlands) for the 3rd time in 2 seasons…
