Good Bye 2010, a Year we will Never Forget..
That goes without saying, doesn’t it? Well, I said it anyway. Blade sent me the extended KNBR audio a while back and wordpress is just making it too difficult to replay here so I have taken the liberty of transcribing the final 5 minutes or so of the call from K/K. As we close out 2010 there’s nothing I’d rather do than relive this one last time:
Kuip: And that’s it! For the first time in 52 years the giants are world champions! And they come pouring out of the dugout circling brian wilson, the bullpen flying in from left field. Dancing. Hugging. And you can’t help but think that this group is celebrating for the Sey Hey Kid, for will the thrill, Celebrating for #25. And celebrating for all you giants fans where ever you are. Giants fans, this party is just getting started. Aubry Huff hugging anyone that is around him. What a season. Start off in March and end on November 1st and we win a world series for the first time in SF. And WIlson with that cutter that got nelson cruz to swing and miss and that’s when the celebration begins.
Kruk: If ever there was a city or a fanbase that deserves this team it’s northern california.
Kuip: that’s right. the giants will be coming home world champions and they’ll be getting home at some point in the wee hours of the morning because the party is gonna take a while here in Arlington for the players, the coaches all still in between the mound and 2nd base and still hugging. they’re hugging strangers. I’ve settled on Mike Murphy and instead of just being in the crowd he’s handing out tee shirts and that’s just the way he wants it.
Kruk: being a good clubby, Mike Murphy has been here since 1958 and there has been a lot of redness in his eyes as he’s been down this march from Oct through Nov 1st clincher and I agree, he is giants baseball.
Kuip: well it was a script we saw all year. the solid start and then you bring in the bullpen. And in a lot of ways I’m sure Bochy wanted to see Wilson on the mound to end this game.
Kruk: well he earned it, best closer in the NL this year. And how about this: the giants retired the last 8 batters and there was no torture! a 3 up three down 8th a 3 up three down 9th. 12 rangers struck out tonight, 10 by lincecum, 2 by wilson. And wilson ended the game, ended the year with a strike out of nelson cruz. And the giants, the san francisco giants…..
Kuip: they got one. Between the mound and 2nd base and for some of these players you don’t know where they’ll be next year. Edgar Renteria, maybe the series MVP….
Kruk: I know where they’ll be. they’re gonna be etched in the memory of every single giants fan forever.
Kuip: well that indeed is true. All the great teams and players that have passed through here, all the hall of famers, that never got a shot to experience what the group is experiencing right now….
Krup: I ran into Juan Marichal in the clubhouse this morning, he looked dapper as ever in his blue suit and tie, and he looked right at me and goes “it ends tonight.” And I said “there’s a lot of people that feel the same way”.
and he goes, “it’ll be a celebration like we’ve never seen in san francisco.” And I think that every giants player that ever played in that city knew that if they ever could win one, ever could be a world champion, that the reception, the parade, is gonna be like nobody’s ever seen.
Kuip: well, now in the middle is gm brian sabean and he is absolutely ecstatic, this is gonna be a tearful night for Brian Sabean……….
Thanks for the memories. The basking goes on. The New Year arrives here in the Midwest in exactly 12 hours. The basking will continue. The San Francisco Giants are World Champs.
That’s almost *exactly* what I was about to write, stix.
But I was going to use the words”transcripts”
Years in my head get iconic labels: 1982: year my son was born, 1986, 1997: daughters’ births. Births, deaths, marriages, job starts or terminations. Stuff like that. We all know the cerebral label 2010 gets:
We are World Series Champions. 2010? Oh yeah. Easy. That’s the Giants’ improbable World Series year. 2010? SF. 2010? Giants. 2010? Sweet.
BTW, Flav, great image for Days Till Pitchers and Catchers Report.
Billy Dee lives!
thanks. It bides my time. Tomorrow is an easy one…..
I’m assuming you guys saw the K-State player get called for excessive celebration for simply saluting to the crowd in yesterday’s bowl game. Ridiculous. Anyway, I actually like team celebrations. This one is classic…..

Try reeling in that one if the fish is Prince Fielder….
Happy New Year to you all.

Happy New Year all.
So much for LaRoche going to Baltimore. The O’s just inked Derrek Lee. My contest is shot.
Happy New Year Flappers!
You know what Fuck Adam LaRoche. That’s 2 years in a row he had leverage going into the off season, and fucked himself, out of a World Series Ring last year. (Rather have the HUFFSTER anyday, he plays with pride and guts and not greed)Dude you are Adam LaRoche if someone offers you a 3 year deal take it. Guess he’ll have to settle for another 1 year deal probably with the Nats have fun freezing your ass off on a losing team in September.
Cheers for a Happy New Year Flappers!!!!
Ah, 2010. The year 2010 will be etched in my memory always as the year of the Giants. The sportsdream of a Giants fan fulfilled. Top memories for me of the season follow. There are others, but these stand out for me. Not only were there great memories, but the characters on this team as well as its character in winning all those tight, tortuous games will always be a big part of it all. Rally Thong, Fear the Beard, that Ashkon video, etc. I don’t think any of us could have scripted a more exciting, fulfilling season and playoffs. Truly a memorable season for so many reasons, not just winning it all. Happy New Year, Flappers!….
Mid-April. Huff hits inside the park HR at ATT, looks like he’s going to expire after running the bases, and laughs. Maybe this guy looks like a player…
May. Wilson saves 2-1 win for Timmy over the ‘Stros at ATT with epic 15-pitch, bases loaded, 2 out AB with Kaz Matsui. 14 heaters, 1 slider, ends in fly out. Kaz fukkin’ Matsui?…
June. Giants beat Rocks 11-8 in Denver in roller coaster game, stopping Giants 7-game losing slide, longest of the year. Gmen get 7 off a heretofore invincible but today wild Jimenez in the 3rd, but Zitoid then coughs up a hairball for the umpteenth time and gives up 6 in 5 1/3. Bochy gets tossed arguing a call at first. Wilson gets a 4-out save. Ishi smokes first career grand salami (off Jimenez), Huff clubs 2 run insurance dinger in top of 9th. Crazy game, the type Giants usually lose in Denver. Hmmmmm….
July. Posey on fire during the season-turning East Coast road trip after Sabes shipped out Bengie. Especially a steaming Sat game on the 10th in DC. He took the Nats for 4-5, including a dinger to right, 3 rbi’s, and threw out two runners. That roadie anointed him as the holy child…
July. Night game on the 20th at the Latrine, Giants win 7-5. Outrageous game with Torre and his bench coach ejected. Bochy catches Mattingly napping, making 2nd trip to mound in same visit to Broxton in the 9th with bases loaded. Broxton has to go, Sherrill comes in cold, Torres immediately rips two run winning double. Bochy loses the Bonehead moniker, at least for tonight…
July. On last day of the month, Burrell’s dinger against LA in the bottom of the 8th wins 2-1 against LA. ATT crowd goes wild. Maybe this “Magic Inside” bullshit is real…
August. Giants lose at home vs. Reds 11-10 after huge comeback.
Argggh..
September. Disheartening 4-2 Friday night loss at the Latrine on first game of critical roadie. Billingsley with a 2-hitter wastes a rare good Zito start. Sat. night game, Giants down 4-1 heading into 8th against Lilly. Looks fukkin Grim. But, then Rent and Burrell hit consecutive solo shots against Lilly and Dotel. In the 9th, Uribe smokes 9th inning two run dinger against Broxton to bring back SF to a 5-4 win with a Wilson save. Huge, huge win, as SF goes on to smite LA the next day 3-0 behind Dirrty, Romo, Wilson, and on to a 7-3 roadie including 3 outta 4 at San Diego, which essentially puts the Giants right back in the thick of the race. IMO, most important win and Uribe’s 9th inning HR most important AB of the regular season.
September. Giants smash Brew Crew 9-2 at ATT on the 19th. Guillen rips grand slam, Burrell smokes towering, orbital shot to left for a 3 run dinger, Zito even pitches well over his 6 frames to stop his personal 9-game hairball loss streak. Snarkk and the Snarkkettes enjoy a warm afternoon in the bleachers. A couple gets engaged and goes on the jumbotron in back of us. Lady in front shares major cotton candy stash with Snarkkettes, who are more thrilled with that than grand slam. Fine day had by all…
September. Comes down to last weekend at ATT. After Cain loses Friday night and Zito coughs up a choking hairball 3 inning start on Saturday, Giants beat Pads 3-0 in Sunday’s last game of year to win the division. Dirrty and the Pen come up clutch against Latos, as well as a Dirrty crazyass triple. Posey homers late to secure it. Unbelievable finish to a tortuous, but glorious regular season.
Playoffs
6. Timmy’s 14 K stellar, throw down win in NLDS game #1 vs. Braves at ATT. Sweet.
5. Game 3 in Atlanta. Romo gives up 2 run dinger to Hinske in bottom of 8th to crap all over a great Dirrty effort. Things look fukkin grim and about to be Giants down 2-1 in a 5-game series. But, with SF down in 9th 2-1, 2 outs, 2 strikes on Franchez, he fights off several pitches, then clutch hits a single up the middle, extends inning. Then Huff comes up and singles to right, Ishi scores to tie the game. Conrad then makes third error of the game on Posey’s grounder, winning run scores. IMO, Franchez’ AB was the key to the entire post season…
4. Game #1 NLCS. Cody smokes 2 solo shots off Halladay to stun the Phillies 4-3, as Timmy struggles with not great stuff, but still outperforms Halladay. An in-your-face wake up call game to Philly Phans, including Wilson striking out 4 to end the game. 3. Game #6 NLCS. Affeldt and the Pen save the game after Dirrty implodes early. Uribe’s 2-out, 8th inning winning dinger. Wilson gets 5-outs to win game, including epic called 3rd strike 3-2 slider on Howard to win the Pennant. Will it ever get better than that for Giants fans? Yes, wait a week or so.
2. WS game #2. In between late innings “Lights” sing along by entire ATT crowd. I only saw it on youtube, and made what’s left of my hair stand on end.
1. Rent’s 3 run dinger off Lee to win the WS. What else?
terrific summary narrative; thanks
Well, i have to say a sweet good-bye to the year that was 2010 in 2 short hours.
SF Giants world serious champeens, wow what a thrill, still baskin’ baby.
Happy healthy 2011 y’all
Happy New Year to you all!!
As for me, I think Tim Lincecum said it best when he said:
“FUCK YEAH!!”
Great summary, Snarkk….
I’m fighting a bit of a bug and am just sitting at home watching college football. My Baseball Forecaster arrived (Shandler is considered one of the fantasy stat guru’s). It’s interesting to read what he has to say about our Giants–he miss fired on many of them last year. He still has no faith in Torres. Hates Zito. Doesn’t really like Dirrrrty. Loves Wilson and Cain. Says Huff could repeat last year. Thinks Tejada is going to completely unravel this year. Interesting read, regardless…
Happy New Year to the Flap!
I think I told y’all that, after the screaming, shouting, running through the streets etc., I went to say “The Giants won the World Series” to my twin boys and instead of words coming out, i burst into tears. boys looked at me in shock and all i could do was shake my head and try to say “I don’t know” because there was absolutely no sign of this until I went to say the magical words. And the thing is, when I really think about it again, really let myself recall this year and all the other years before it, the tears well up again.
Was just down to Houston rocking my several different WS Champs shirts and loving it. My brother-in-law lives in Dallas and him and his son are big ranger fans. REALLY enjoyed the gloating.
btw. They’re calling for the head of Gary Kubiak. He could be a good pickup at OC.
Ahh, the glory of it. A franchise that was the bridesmaid throughout the 60s’; took a deep dive in the 70’s; came up for a bit of air in the 80’s; featured the Player of the Decade during the 90’s; and flubbed an excellent shot in the early oughts; finally comes up big; actually catches breaks and portends a Twenty-Teens dynasty by becoming the BIG DOG on the block in 2010. Shocked the hell outta the baseball world in the process. Held the biggest party “Bagdad by the Bay” (thanx, Herb) has ever seen. Gotta love it.
Happy New Year Flappers!
Outstanding and very date appropriate posts Paul (10:49 am) and Snarkk (1:52 pm).
What a year, huh? I’m not embarrassed to say that I was “doomero uno” insofar as predicting 83 wins prior to the season beginning. When you’re wrong, you’re wrong and you should admit it, thus my mea culpa.
Never have I been so happy to be so, so, so, soooooooooo wrong. Yes, 2010 will always be indelibly printed on my brain housing unit as the Giants World Series Championship year.
Happy New Year to all here, to those who post and those who merely like to watch. I am grateful to you all for this solidarity, this community of pride and passion. Thanks, Magnus Flavoris, for being our tireless and creative host. And thanks to Twin for his generous contests (yeah, yeah, I’ve been slow in firing up my own winning prize).
All the best to you and yours, Giants Knothole Gang: health, serenity, joy, work, gratitude, family, friends.
(Just got the Series DVD as a late Christmas gift from my wife, the one-disk compilation. One more to get: the one-disk Season compilation.)
New Years Eve has always been a special day for me. Great party’s with good friends going back many years. Got married on New Years Eve 5 years back. What a great year 2010 has been.
Long live the Flavor Nation.
Happy New Year Flappers.
Party down everyone. Party scene is a bit limited in my neighborhood tonight with 7″ down and blowing all over the place with a 25mph wind and temps hovering just above zero. Didn’t have plans anyway, though, so i’m sitting here, full of spaghetti, staying warm with the radiance of wood heat and basking on.
Vegas and the other oddsmakers do not seem to favor the World Champs to repeat. That’s nothing. Last year most of em figured the Giants to finish 3rd in the NL West. Maybe they’re getting into the habit of throwing their money away? Last January, i predicted the team would win 94 and play in the NLCS. Bit off in the win category and a tad conservative in the other one. It’s a bit over 3 hours to January, here, but looking at a better team going into ’11 than ’10 and weakness in the rest of the Division, i say the Giants win 100 this coming season.
2010 was a very great year, as all of you well know.
Happy New Year, flappers.
Snark,
I was at the Uribe homer Doyers game and game 2 of WS. What a season!
Thanks to all the flappers for keeping me up when Gmen were down, and having some diehard fans to connect with after it was all over!…
