A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Beltre to the Rangers and the Boras Insanity Continues….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 5, 2011

6 years, 96 million? What the hell does Boras say/do/threaten these teams with that gets them to completely overbid for his players? The GM’s can’t be so stupid as to NOT know they are overbidding by dozens of millions of dollars, can they? Whatever it is, Scott Boras is the greatest negotiator the world has ever known. One time….ONE TIME…..I would like to see him lose but I guess that isn’t ever going to happen. I’m just glad Sabean stays largely away from this money-eating machine–well, I guess he already got “Bor-assed” with Zito…….

It *is* hard to believe, isn’t it? He must have a ton of porn stars on his speed dial or something. What an insane signing

sorry about the delays in getting the posts up lately. It’s a wordpress problem. They aren’t showing up for hours after I post them. I’m working with IT to figure out what the issue is……

I read a good (if long) article about Boras a few years ago. Here’s an excerpt:

Agents benefit from what business-school types refer to as “information asymmetry,” because they are in touch with multiple teams, who are, in turn, forbidden to communicate with one another. Controlling the flow of that information—between the teams, the media, and the players—is an essential component of the Boras methodology. “In terms of negotiation, this guy is an absolute special-forces guy,” a competitor said of Boras. “The prison interrogations—he’s one of those.” Boras is a skilled manipulator of the media, and shows the kind of patience, as deadlines approach, that derives from great self-confidence. (This spring, he cut his negotiations with the Arizona Diamondbacks over the pitcher Max Scherzer so close to the wire that the A.P. reported, at 4:42 A.M., “Diamondbacks fail to sign No. 1 pick Scherzer,” only to reverse course at 5:32 A.M., with a description of a four-year deal.) Boras is not, according to people familiar with his bargaining style, a yeller but, rather, a calm and even cartoonish condescender; in conversation, he comes across as someone who has never doubted his own dinner selection—although he would be happy to inform you of all the ways that you should doubt yours.

Plus, he has top free agents. He’s not having to peddle lower-echelon players. His success gets him top free agents. It feeds on itself.

I think sabean is on the right track now. 2, 3 yrs tops. the ws win should make a big difference in how much interest fa’s have in coming to sf. I’d much rather have 6 or 7 20 hr guys than one 40 hr guy and 4 10’s and a couple of 20’s.

Condescension as a tactic? I’m suprised that works. You’d think it would backfire

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on January 5, 2011 at 10:51 am

For a lawyer? Agent? Seriously? Condesension is the butter on their bread, with wind under their wings . . . just ask Xoot . . .

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on January 5, 2011 at 11:03 am

Well, yeah in a courtroom badgering a witness or something. But dealing with egotistical multi-millionaire team owners and GMs? I’m surprised. I guess I’m naive

You guys are just too kind.

  6. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on January 5, 2011 at 11:28 am

With teh bargaining chips (players) Boras has, it’s shooting fish in a barrel.

Given the fact that the teams can’t talk to one another, the control of information is the golden goose. Front offices seem to be catching on to some of this, but then again, some guys just can’t stop themselves. See Matt Holliday, Bryce Hawper, Jason Werth, Beltre, etc, and that’s just THIS year . . .

Anyone believing Bagwell’s claim that he bulked up by eating 20 pounds of meat a day?

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on January 5, 2011 at 2:23 pm

Is that physically possible? That’s 80 1/4 pound burgers!

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on January 5, 2011 at 2:35 pm

More math. Let’s be judicious. Off season. 7 hours of sleep a night and 5 hours a day working out. That would mean around 7 1/4 pound burgers every hour on the hour. Around one very 8.5 minutes. Non stop. While pissing, shitting, dressing, jerking off, etc.

      Yeah. I believe it

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on January 5, 2011 at 2:36 pm

Congrats to both Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar inducted to the HOF.Especially Blyleven which was way way over due.Next years class will probably include Barry Larkin and Jeff Bagwell as the candidates will be a weak class.

Usually I feel like the sports blackhole time period is right after the Super Bowl, until the NCAA tourney starts. But this year, the NFL playoffs interest me so little that the blackhole is pretty much starting after the Auburn/Oregon game.

Not real big on the NBA, zum?

      • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on January 5, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Hyuk. When Bird and Magic left, (and Run TMC ran its course) the NBA lost me . . .

Michael Jordan singlehandedly ruined dribbling, and the 1.5 step rule. Dribbling over the shoulder is not called anymore. Guys now regularly get 2.5 steps and a jump step on their way to the glass for a dunk.

All true, chuck. But I still pay attention. And as a plus, Coach Smart is the best interview in the league

As one of the greatest pitchers for my #2 and homestate team, i’m delighted that Bert Blyleven finally got the call to the Hall. Dude well deserved the honor as he is high on many of the all-time pitching categories. He was one of the keys to the Twins W.S. victory in ’87 against the Cardinals. I was doubly delighted for that win as it was the first ever for Minnesota and they downed a St. Louis team which had edged out the Giants on the strength of a Jose Oquendo flyball which should have been caught by ex-LaBumbo good hitter but adventurous outfielder Candy Maldonado. One of these years the Giants and Twins will meet up in the Fall Classic and me and at least one more Flapper will be in 7th heaven.

Kudos are also due to Roberto Alomar, who was a near magical 2nd baseman, great base-stealer and pretty decent hitter ~ an All-Star for years running. I’m glad the Hall did right by these two.

Yeah, a Giants/Twins WS would be a huge “bragging rights’ moment for my family as well. My step-mom, aunt and uncle and a couple cousins live there. Hell, my dad died there. But they were totally cool when the Giants took it all

the thing I don’t get about this “Boras controls the info” thing is that EVERYONE knows what other teams have already offered. The A’s offer was published as was the Angels offer. Only a fucking idiot would believe a guy that says “yeah, but I’ve got other *secret* offers on the table that are much higher”……

I’ll keep watching the W’s. They get a nice road win tonight. Lately, they have picked it up since getting some players back, and Ellis is worthy of an All-Star bid. Udoh looks solid, given he missed all of training camp. Should be interesting to see how they do in the second half, if healthy.

  20. Rough Trade's avatar Rough Trade said, on January 5, 2011 at 7:55 pm

If W’s are going to makes some headway, now is the time–18 of their next 22 at home.

  21. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on January 5, 2011 at 8:07 pm

The W’s are not going to be making any headway. No headway. I wish they would, I love them, but this team is not built right now to do anything other than beat the shittiest teams and hang with the better teams for like a half……..

I used to give a shit about the Warriors. Niners too for that fact. Over time my interest just fell off. I tell myself it is because my hometown teams suck so bad but really the NBA is just unwatchable and the NFL is a bore.

Baseball is the only sport out there that i’ve been able to stick with. Not sure why but even Barry Lamar couldn’t ruin it for me.

Can’t they send Boras to negotiate an Israeli-Palestinian deal?

Anyway, just had fun watching “The Journey,” via the In the Clubhouse section of the Giants website. Many of you probably saw it on Comcast in the Bay Area. I didn’t. It was a whole different perspective than MLB productions. What a pleasurable — and free — 50 minutes. (Terrible sound mixing, though.) It is followed by a short clip on the trophy.

What this all spells is BASKING.

    SAVORING.

    It still floors me.

    Always will.

    Till I’m under the dirt.

Has anyone gone to these World Series trophy showings? They are going to be here in Sacramento tomorrow. The showing starts at 10:00 AM at the state Capitol. Has anyone heard how long the lines are?

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on January 5, 2011 at 10:41 pm

If you want a photo of you standing by the trophy you have to purchase it. That’s probably for the best anyway. Can you imagine how long it would take for a line to move if you had to wait for every jackwagon in line to get their own act together on that? It IS better to just have one professional photographer, and keep the line moving. They’re on a limited time schedule.
